Overnight Open Thread (3-26-2015)

Busy. Drinking. Not caring. Too unmotivated at the moment to give you the punishment and abuse you deserve. But considering outsourcing it to an Indian consulting service. Those guys will work for rupees and aren't hung up at all on ethics or US Laws.

Quote of the Day I

The latest man to score an interview with President Obama, Shane Smith, has conducted some hard-hitting interviews, including one with a Japanese sex doll.

Quote of the Day II

Friendly governments spy on friendly government. That's how friends make sure who are their real friends.

The way the U.S. allegedly found out Israel was spying on the nuke negotiations was because the U.S. was spying on Israel.

Quote of the Day III

There is a simple rule here, a rule of legislation, a rule of business, a rule of life: beyond a certain point, complexity is fraud. You can apply that rule to left-wing social programs, but you can also apply that rule to credit derivatives, hedge funds, all the rest of it.

-- PJ O'Rourke

Quote of the Day IV

Bill Clinton is not a hypocrite. If a man believes that it is just and moral to redistribute wealth, there is nothing hypocritical in his attempts to redistribute some of that wealth to himself.

-- PJ 'O'Rourke

Polarizing, Calculating, Disingenuous, Insincere, Ambitious, Inevitable, Entitled, Secretive, Will-Do-Anything-To-Win, Out-of-the-Past, Out-of-Touch Hillary Clinton

A group of first year university drama students have described the surreal moment they were shown a graphic video featuring their lecturer naked, masturbating and urinating -- all in the name of art.

Lauren Barri-Holstein, a PhD student and performance artist, showed the clip originally designed as promotional material for her controversial stage show Splat!,as part of an introduction to their latest drama module at Queen Mary University, east London.

The only good thing about the Iran Deal is that it will destroy the Democrat party.

It may in fact be a ruse, to set Iran up for some Israeli "Osirak on Steroids" and deflect blame away from the US, but the press reports indicating complete caving by Kerry show that the Administration is completely incompetent. They are essentially permitting Iran to produce atomic weapons ... there is no good outcome.

There have been seven times in history that there have been lunar eclipses on the first day of Passover and Sukkot two years in a row.

The last three have been connected with significant Jewish struggle (Jewish Expulsion, Statehood/War of Independence, Six-Days War), and ultimate victory. Dunno about the first four.

161 So a guy at NR wrote at the Corner how he went to the symphony tonight in Manhattan and the composer addressed the audience. The composer spoke of the terrible oppression suffered by people in the ME and Africa - BUT, hey we can't get on our high horse, because we have - Rush Limbaugh!! And the asshole got a big round of applause for saying that. The NR writer is a friend of Rush. He was probably the only one in attendance who had ever listened to Limbaugh. But the mob got their 2 minute hate in.

I read stories like that and it makes me think that if there was a way of getting JJ Sefton and ace and all the decent people out of Manhattan ahead of time, I might not care so much of Obama's Good Buddies arrived in NYC with a suitcase nuke. I mean, the New Yorkers think Limbaugh is just as bad.

I'm just pointing out all M'chelle did was hold up an ambiguous sign. Normal people read into it that she was advocating saving the girls from their evil muslim oppressors. But the sign does not acutally say that. If one assumes that the Obamas support muslim causes, (a view with increasing amounts of evidence)then a different reading of the sign is that these girls need to be returned to their muslim overlords.
A more cynical view is that posing with a sign is an easy way to appear to care about something without acutally having to do something about which you are advocating.

Donna - wow. Think I can guess which NR writer that was.

A few years back, can't remember circumstances, I ended up at some stage event, a comedy review or something. Must have been 2008/9.

Before going into character, the main actor does a rambling intro to the audience, comments about our city, his (in Australia?).

Somehow manages to segue into a comment (from memory) that "it will be so refreshing to have BOOKS in the White House again!" (thunderous applause and laughter).

Think I didn't leave only due to circumstances. So, a couple of pathetically unimpressive affirmative action airheads (the constitution is a "charter of negative liberties") were about to soil the WH (and look how bad it has been), where at that time the boss read 60+ books a year (real books, not crap). So the Coastal Clueless were just tickled with themselves for mocking the smart, well-read, serious guy in celebration of the fourth-rate ignoramus psycho.

It's the accumulation of things like this that has left me viewing most of our society, esp. the "educated" part, with contempt and indifference. Not my countrymen.

That's nothing that some ambitious construction projects couldn't fix. Just make an artificial moon out of belt asteroids that has a similar mass ratio with Mars as Luna does to Earth. It'd be one hell of a mega-engineering project, but it's possible.

The tidal stress of a moon would cause heat and friction that would restart the planet's cooling core, and as a bonus, restore the magnetic field and end the problem of atmospheric stripping, enabling us to attempt to make changes to the atmosphere.

After discussing the issue with the local constable and perv (telling him in detail his late night visits to no avail) decided I'd rather dump the place for $50k under the price point once I found a job elsewhere than deal with the constable anymore.

Hope the pervs new neighbors are enjoying the midnight tours.

Yes, and from what I understand, it's a French prosecutor who is claiming that the co-pilot intentionally crashed the plane.

You know the saying, "If the only tool you have is a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail."

I'd say that a prosecutor would by nature tend to be predisposed to assume criminal activity.

They haven't found the flight data recorder yet. So I think it's premature to be making definitive pronouncements.

Yes, what evidence is available so far does seem to point to the co-pilot. But let's let the investigators do their jobs. That can take months, especially when a plane has been turned into confetti.

They have been covering the Ukraine crises since day one, including one of their own journalists getting temporarily kidnapped. Sadly...yeah...they interviewed him a LOT. Endless videos fellating him for the last couple weeks. Just before that my jaw hit the floor when I saw they actually talked to Biden. About climate change. Yeah.

Vice is a potential model for the future of better journalism, but I have a feeling that place is overrun with Obamabots who, knowing he's a lame duck and can't affect elections anymore, wants to hear all his bullshit that he never followed through on, but still gives them tingles. The younger one said he couldn't get a drink first time in LA.

I recall thinking - "hmmm, that's, uh, interesting - someone 20 years old flying a plane with 350 people aboard, hmmmm".

Because all I see here is people speculating on scenarios based on the details released by the French prosecutor who apparently had direct access to the CVR recordings and who has already pointed to the FO as the proximate cause of the crash. 280 The left created a mythology in which America was always the bad guy - overthrowing weaker powers, interfering in elections, secretly helping terrorists... and then they took power and made it all true.

Of course, we knew this for years, but people are so locked into their ideological tribes that even when Obama went after the Honduran government diplomatically (and with the aid of a disgustingly complicit press), we were basically just talking to ourselves.

I think all we have now are "I told you so's," also talking to ourselves.

Posted by: eleven at March 27, 2015 12:19 AM (MDgS

Water is way down the list in this scenario.

To add water, you need to raise atmospheric pressure.
To raise atmospheric pressure, you need to restart the magnetic field.
To restart the magnetic field, you need an active core.
To reactivate the core, you need tidal forces.
To get the tidal forces, you have to build a moon.

One engineering challenge at a time.

A lot of the atmosphere and water problems could probably be solved after the core is restated by redirecting a comet or two into the southern ice cap, which would vaporize large amounts of carbon dioxide ice and water ice.

It links to a story at what appears to be Mannheimer's personal site michael-mannheimer.net. But that's down, probably due to all the traffic.

Dude. This is a really bad idea. The secretary can't influence your hiring very much one way or another. That play might work with a decision maker, but she's just going to send an email to her boss saying "cross qdpsteve off the list" and be done with it.

If you can't talk to the person in charge, send them an email. Or, if you have a decent rapport with the secretary, say whatever is needed to get the head honcho on the phone directly. Initiative. Determination. Enthusiasm.

She also just loved to be hyperjudgmental about others, and believed every stupid thing she could find anywhere on the net that was negative about the world, no matter if the blog was super-right, super-left, run by neonazis, whatever.

She even once was stupid enough to link to a Rawstory piece that, because she couldn't see it, was ridiculing a Christian lawmaker for some out-of-context quote. 398 It's possible that the guys was just nuts. He was young, hadn't clocked a hell of a lot of hours and he had a "spell" on the flight. Yeah, locking the door, autopilot and all. A usually normal functioning fruit loop, that has occasional full on delusions and whatnot, undetected by others as he hides this from others, being aware of his nuttiness. Just a thought.

400 Nothing really newsy in the SDZ article on the co-pilot. Hometown details, locals who knew him, how the family may now live a hidden life, etc. His hometown was "until now, known by most as a stop in No-man's-land between Cologne and Frankfurt".

It seems to be have been planned. He was acting perfectly normal (according to the audio recorded conversation between the pilots) and then as soon as the pilot left the cockpit with the door shut and locked behind him, the descent commenced.

So the "snapping" doesn't appear to be the case. I suspect he left a note or message somewhere.

Yep, a sad and shocking mystery. We'll probably have enough info to hazard a guess in due course, but maybe no more than that.

But with the suicide crashes adding up (EgyptAir, SilkAir, now this, just off the top of my head), perhaps some changes are headed our way on flight deck access, lone pilots at the controls, etc. Tough to square all the circles of 9/11 security, suicidal pilot security, and so on.

428 I heard a weird news report on the top of the hour news at 8 eastern. Fox News radio I think. It mentioned the pilot was estranged from his girlfriend, and made a point of giving her last name, which sounded Jewish, and not in that vaguely German way. Goldfarb maybe. It was weird to give that kind of detail. It made me think the local stringer was setting this up to be the fault of this yenta who left the guy.

But. Recent convert to yzlam. Jewish girl. Maybe it's late and I'm tired. But if I was a flyover redneck, it might be all too easy to blame the co-pilot being a recent religious convert.

Love that video, SMFH.

The Hat is not around tonight, but a few weeks ago I toured the nuke test museum in Vegas. Very well done. I forget the name of the artillery test, but they had the dummy round simulator or other elments of that shot on display.

I've always thought that the ultimate time to be alive for an engineer/scientist with nukyler/splodey stuff inclinations would have been the 1950s/60s. Basically an unlimited budget, with half the world's geography and most of the world's technical and material support at your disposal.

(three beers into Friday night)
"Hey, you know what would be interesting? Let's do a high-yield shot underwater, and see what the prompt radiation or blast effects are on surface and above-surface targets, in different kinds of weather"

"Sounds good. I'll write up the test proposal Monday. Let's do it in October, so we're home for Thanksgiving"

"Perfect"

(yeah, life could have been pretty much like that)

I'm not saying you won't get to play, but you shouldn't get first dibbies on everything. Maybe AtC gets first on the flamethrower -- maybe Chi gets first dibs on the tactical nuke.....we all have to take turns and share. Part of the appeal of Buckley is his understanding, and mockery, of the fact that people vote irrationally in many cases, and there is not a damn thing he, as great as he was, or us, could (can)do about it.

The back of WFB's book The Unmaking of a Mayor about his NY Mayoral campaign is entirely a testament to this fact, and he points out time and time again in his columns the same lame Democrat slurs about the rich and taxes and Republicans hating children et. al. will never cease, and are sadly effective.

Especially in academia, for obvious reasons of (as Buckely called it in On The Firing Line) hubris, "all but unadulterated."

I watched a couple of minutes into the intro. The first and biggest problem is that the most disposable city in the entire United States is Washington, D.C. -- in fact, it's the only target that comes to mind (with the possible exception of Hollywood or Wall Street) that leaves the nation stronger, more ready, more able, and more competent to do what needs to be done after its destruction.

I would be far more worried about what the current crew of idiots in DC might do after Atlanta got nuked than what the nation might do if DC got nuked.

There is a little memorial in the capitol for those who perished on Flight 93 on 9/11. It essentially says, "thank you for saving our butts." I have to say that I'm terribly conflicted about it, being that it does, in fact, honor those who perished -- and are martyrs, thereby.......and those who organized and carried out resistance -- who are heroes. And it calls them out by name to honor their memory -- which is all to the good. But it still comes across as smarmy and self-serving. They didn't do it to save the loathsome parasites infesting the capitol, they did it because they were Americans and weren't going to sit-by during a foreign-sourced terrorist attack like it was a ride at Disneyland.

Cooth - do you have a convenient link for that?

A co-worker's parents were on Flight 93. Id like to see that thing some day...
Their memorial service was pretty cool, but also quite moving. We were required to wear Hawaiian shirts & be prepared to drink lots of margaritas in order to attend.
Luckily, I had plenty of tacky shirts to loan friends for the occasion.

479 Bye, bye Hillary. Nothing gay, we promise. But don't bother to wait up.

480 Did you ever have a prostitute living next to you?
How about a family of illegals upwind from you boiling a vat of corn on
the cob for their pushcart? Body dumped in the street across from your
house?

"Transitioned".

I just moved from a neighborhood that tried and failed at transitioning. I found a bum dead on my porch one morning (I really truly and sincerely hope it was natural causes that killed him but the police never got back to me on that point) and just barely missed witnessing a triple homicide at the gas station and laundromat across the street from me.

I am very glad in my new place not to have to worry about stray gunfire.

It is oddly difficult to find. I think this is a pic.

484 A couple of years or so ago, I used to ramble around the Champaign-Urbanna area walking at night. I got to see quite a few people who could be labeled as bums.

Each and everyone that I would offer to help refused. Unless the help was instant cash money.

Chi, your co-worker's parents are heroes, as cooth has stated.

They were on 77. I guess as soon as you mentioned flight 93, I zoned & thought of them...

I had never heard of the 93 memorial, though, so thanks for alerting us.

Every one of those who perished in the flights that hit the Twin Towers, in the collapse of the towers, in the flight that hit the Pentagon, in the impact zone of the Pentagon, and on Flight 93 are our ennobled dead. May they never be forgotten.

Posted by: cthulhu at March 27, 2015 04:07 AM (T1005)

490 cooth,

Will never forget. Hell, it was the reason I spent three fun-fillled years in Iraq.

492 Someone brought it up earlier, but it has been on my mind for quite some time...

Would our forces attack Israel to protect Iran, by order of the CinC?

I want to say, "hell no"...but just the fact that I have doubts that they would not pains me to no end.

495 True CC.

However, I don't think I need to tell you the repercussions of what would happen if our navy or air force fires on any Israeli force, an ally, to protect an enemy that has sworn to destroy both Israel and the US.

No easy answers. But I have a feeling we're going to find that out sooner than later.

Fact is, Isreal will not allow Iran to have nukes.

I pray to God that our young men and women will not have to be put in that position...

Posted by: SMFH at it all at March 27, 2015 04:34 AM (OsWis)

496 Well, some generals might well decide that Obama is a domestic enemy...in which case his orders would not be lawful, I think. The court martial would be epic, and the outcome likely dependent on whether or not Obama maintained power or was relieved for being unfit--you don't have to follow the orders of a delusional CiC.

I used live in one those neighborhoods in college. I slept with a .32 automatic under my pillow as the local denizens apparentlythought if the back door wasn't bolted in meant "come on in and loot."

I solved the problem by commuting and paying higher rent in the suburbs.

505 "Those guys will work for rupees and aren't hung up at all on ethics or US Laws."

If that's the qualifications why not get Obama to do it? The rupees shouldn't be a problem and I'm looking forward to seeing him doing something he's qualified for; also looking forward to hearing the exotic manner he pronounces "rupees?

Also I understand Obama doesn't drive a hard bargain so you may be able to save some rupees and fire up your centrifuges.
