Liberals Trash New Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart Movie "Get Hard" as Racist, Homophobic and In All Ways Problematic

I can't say I'm too bothered by this.

If you truck with envenomed weaklings incapable of anything other than Witch Hunts and Outrage Seizures, you kind of deserve what you get.

Plus, the movie doesn't really look all that funny.

So anyway f*** Will Ferrell. All I can say is that I hope that enough liberals get damaged by this dark lunacy that has descended on the country that they are forced to do something about.

If anyone can tackle race-based humor without stirring the P.C. police, it’s Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. Right?

...

Their first movie together, the March 27 release "Get Hard," should be an early spring smash. Only the film's sneak screening at the SXSW festival in Austin was anything but a box office coronation. It was a virtual pitchforks and flaming torches affair.

"Get Hard" casts Ferrell as a casually racist investment banker brought down for a crime he didn’t commit. To prep for prison, he hires a black car wash attendant (Hart) to teach him how to survive in the Big House. He just assumes Hart’s character is a thug, even though he’s a squeaky clean family man. Let the barrage of racial stereotypes commence.

The hipster throng greeted Ferrell and Hart like rock stars prior to the screening. But when the duo left and director Etan Cohen handled the post-screening Q&A, things got ugly. Think a particularly nasty Twitter conversation where nuance gets shoved aside.

...

"This film seemed racist as f--," one attendee said. That person wasn’t alone. Indiewire.com summed up the screening's combustible spirit, while adding other elements of the film were similarly troubling: "Alison Brie also steps in as Ferrell's 'cartoonishly materialistic fiancee,' with Craig T. Nelson playing her cash-rich father, in a portrayal that feels sexist. Variety also blew the whistle on the film's "offensive" humor with its early review. “If you’re disturbed by white-collar crime, but not quite as disturbed as you are by gay sex, then congratulations: You might possess just the right combo of social conscience and unexamined homophobia needed to fully enjoy 'Get Hard.'"

Another Variety story suggested the fact that Ferrell’s character isn't eager to perform oral sex on a man might be "homophobic."

Yup, it is now homophobic that a man should not want to s*** a man's d***. That's where we are.

Christian Toto talks about "politically incorrect" films like Blazing Saddles. I don't even think that's it.

Blazing Saddles employed both sorts of racial humor: politically incorrect racial humor and what was once a politically correct style of racial humor, in which the racist is actually the target.

It's the difference between an ironic gag and a non-ironic gag. If I say something like "Chinese people are all good at math and have mystical powers, like elves," I'm not really making a joke about Chinese people -- I'm making a joke about silly conceptions about Chinese people.

Anyway, Blazing Saddles had some straight-ahead racial jokes but it was mostly the more acceptable -- until recently -- ironic racial joke, in which it is actually racist attitudes which are targeted.

Now, I have not seen Get Hard so I can't say this for sure, but I"m going to go ahead and assume, with 99.99% confidence, that it is all the hitherto-acceptable sort of ironic "racial" joke which is really about outdated racial attitudes.

Like Anchorman. No one really thought that film was adopting Ron Burgundy's stance on the inferiority of women, did they? No, of course not; the film was pretty obviously goofing on Ron Burgundy's position.

Will Ferrell is a Big Liberal Pussy and has never done anything to go against the Liberal Party Line, ever; I don't think he's doing so in this disposable nothing of a movie.

I think he's just goofing on outdated racial attitudes again, like he did in Anchorman 2 (NSFW).

But here's the problem: The Outrage Militants are now so militant that even jokes about racism are no longer acceptable, because, by even joking about it, some Terrible Evils might follow:

Racists may not be clever enough to realize the racially-tinged jokes are about racism itself, and are lampooning, rather than championing, racist attitudes, and thus may enjoy the racial jokes without realizing they're supposed to be chastised by them.

And we can't have Racists deriving accidental, incidental pleasure due to their failure to understand.

In addition, some Sensitive But Not Really Clever members of the viewing audience might themselves be Offended By and even Triggered by messaging that is too complex for them to understand. They might mistake Justine Sacco's joke about White Privilege for a political manifesto in support of White Privilege, for example.

As we cannot permit even a single person to be Offended, we must guarantee that all messaging shall be incapable of being misread.

the New Code of Politically Informed Art requires that each Message be pounded with such simpleminded repetitiveness straightforwardness that there is no chance even a dullard could miss the intent.

Subtlety may lead to mistaken impressions, and mistaken impressions are the Devil's Playground.

No art is allowed to be subtle, ironic, nuanced, ambivalent, or questioning any longer. All True Art serves Humanity, and Humanity is only served by childishly-simple and evangelically-direct Pro-Social messages about Racism being bad.

You can't hint that racism is bad, or leave the viewer free to figure out it's bad based on the events contained in your film: Characters must explicitly declare it to be bad, frequently and always, or else the film is "racist."

Millennials are really rather stupid. A friend of mine is in contact with the Younger Generation through his, let us say, Christian Outreach Program, and he was telling me what dullards they are. He told a group that over the weekend he had been to his Mexican friend's wedding. He offered his opinion that Mexican weddings were his favorite, because he liked the food, the beer, the dancing, and the dresses Mexican girls wore.

A whitebread bougie girl turned to him sharply: "That's racist," she informed him.

And she was not kidding, either.

Sure, move past the fact that he was praising Mexican culture. Move past the fact that the story necessarily advertises his close friendship with a Mexican guy.

It's racist because it mentions race.

That is where we are now: Any mention of race, at all, is inherently "racist" to the morons.

Even NPR was a little butthurt that what was once a serious allegation was being treated, by the young and ignorant, as something you just say because you can't think of anything else.

The only way a mention of race is not racist is if that mention of race is made to 1, Explicitly praise that Race for being oppressed by The White Man, or 2, to otherwise advance an expressly leftwing Racial Justice agenda.

Thus, for example, it is not racist to say "The GOP is full of white people," knocking them for the demographic fact that there aren't too many black or minority voters in the party.

If, however, you say, as a Republican, "We need to increase the white vote to win," that is racist.

Note that in both cases, both speakers are referencing the obvious reality that the Democratic Party is majority minority and the GOP is majority white, but in the first case, the mention is Not Racist because it seeks to advance Democrat/leftist interests, whereas the second statement Is Racist because it seeks to thwart those interests.

So that's where we are. A movie which almost certainly pokes racists for being silly is now itself "Racist," because the militant identity politics mobs were too stupid to pick up on a not-subtle-at-all message.

It seems like people were able to be a lot more honest and make a lot more jokes in the 90's than they are now about all of this. SNL skits about looters during the LA riots, etc..All this drama about every damn thing is so boring.

But man they run that commercial for this movie all the damn time! I will be happy when it goes away for that reason alone.

10 I enjoyed the comments from some pinko college lecturer or professor or some shit who said he was far more afraid of his little lefty students than the few conservative ones.

The conservative students were ready to defend their arguments but didn't expect to win them and knew how to move on. But he was terrified of defying the Kiddie Komintern because they could get him in deep trouble. Suspended, Twitter-crucified or even fired.

I want to laugh, but am having trouble seeing a way back from this. The backlash would be welcomed by many, but who has the balls to start backlashing when their careers are on the line?

22 hate to go off topic so early, but got an email from The King this afternoon:

I grew up loving comic books. Back in the day, I was pretty into Conan the Barbarian and Spiderman.

Anyone who reads comics can tell you, every main character has an origin story -- the fateful and usually unexpected sequence of events that made them who they are.

The same goes for grassroots organizers.

For me, it was a "help wanted" ad I saw in a newsletter at the New York Public Library. The job was organizing communities and churches on the South Side of Chicago. It paid $10,000 a year.

I packed up everything and drove across the country in a beat-up Honda to take the job. Those three years changed my life. It's where I found out how hard this work is -- and why it's worth doing.

Looking back, it was the best education I ever had.

OFA is collecting origin stories, and you should join in.

[yeah, "It's where I found out how hard this work is." Community organizers spend a lot of time on the golf course organization the caddies, I suppose.]

I really don't think any of this is about Will Ferrell or any actor being a closet racist, it's about asserting power and making others kowtow to your worldview or they're going to have their lives destroyed.

Will Ferrell will probably come out with some apologetic statement and the Twitter bullies can claim a scalp and go on to the next target. With other filmmakers being scared they too will be called a racist homophobe unless the knee is bent.

It is hard though to feel sorry for Hollywood when they get charged with racism/homophobia, they created this monster.

I want to laugh, but am having trouble seeing a way back from this. The backlash would be welcomed by many, but who has the balls to start backlashing when their careers are on the line?
----------------------

The solution to this might be slowly moving closer, though. It's still a ways off, and this is merely one possibility of many. But...

Instapundit likes to point out that universities these days seem to be having financial troubles. So they're starting to cut back on teaching staff. But the real trouble is massive administrative bloat. And most of the bloating of the administrative staff happens in politically correct sensitivity areas.

If universities start to wake up to this fact, and start cutting those areas, then we might (key word...) start to see a reversal of the attitudes that seem to be crippling the millenials.

Woody Allen on the other hand (if we're on old Sid Caesar writers) started the pervy stuff pretty early and only ever ramped it up.

95 On a flight some months ago I was watching a French movie about this French couple who had three of their 4 daughters Mary undesirable men -Jewish, Arab and Chinese. it was delightful with all racist insults being thrown around from one minority husband to the others.

You can imagine the poor parents' delight when their youngest daughter told them she would be bringing home a good Catholic boy. and you can imagine their horror when they found out he was West African. Hilarity ensues as the original undesirables gang up against the black dude and try to prevent the marriage from happening.

And it turns out the African guy's dad hated white people, too.

Unfortunately I couldn't finish the movie before the plane landed. it was obvious that the movie makers were mocking racist attitudes in an edgy and funny way and promoting the fact that people of different backgrounds can get along. But I can only imagine the fainting and possible death from shock as fragile little Millennials snowflakes watch this, if they ever do. 5 pages of trigger warnings are probably needed.

Oh come on. Let's not turn into haters like the liberals.

Will Farrell is fucking hilarious in most of his movies. Even if he is a wild eyed leftist, he has a certain comic genius that can't be denied. If this particular movie is bad, that's ok - the odds are going to catch up to you sometime.

If we go down that road that we'll only like movies or tv shows starring conservatives, we're really going to limit our entertainment.

Posted by: jwest at March 25, 2015 04:54 PM (9ZZd+)

107 That is where we are now: Any mention of race, at all, is inherently "racist" to the morons.

Jay Leno was recently told that he was racist because he doesn't like Mexican food.

Also not subtle? This movie looks about as unsubtle as me stompying all over someone's face for insulting the mighty mighty manatee, noblest of all God's creatures.

Of course the entire joke is that Will Ferrell's character is a huge racist and nice Kevin Hart is taking him for his money by playing up the racist stereotypes. That's the joke. That's the movie. There will be a Teachable Moment and they will hug it out at the end. That's it. Subtle it is not.

Besides, if we are going to go all Outrage Brigade, how about the part where the movie mocks domestic violence by having Kevin Hart's wife beat him?

*hands on hips, peers over rim of glasses*

It is not acceptable to portray domestic violence as amusing or acceptable, even when attempting to be transgressive and invert the stereotype of the strong black man and the helpless black woman. Though the movie also attempts to mitigate such a denigration of a serious matter by further altering the normed paradigm by casting actors who do not fit the traditional bodymorphic types, it is still unacceptable.

Further, such scenes make a mockery of true domestic violence, which is nearly always perpetrated by cismen against those who identify as female. As such, this is problematic on all levels.

*purses lips, shakes head slowly*

Every comedian has a shelf life - which is why the really good ones move into more dramatic roles (Hanks, Murray, Williams). Some are unable to pull it off (Chase - can Steve Carrell - he shows signs). I think Ferrell tried but came up short. Going back to the well is smart financially - but it often makes for bad comedy.

I think all this ultimately leads to a far more closed and repressed society.

I forget if it's Japan or Korea, but I'm told that in one of those countries, NO ONE TALKS to each other when they're out and about. Not even casual happenstance banter. Ask them for directions, and you get confused stares. (I think it's Japan. Could be wrong, if someone wants to correct me.)

Just everyone going about their business, as clustered as possible into their own little worlds. In our case, it will be because the real world offers such horrible consequences for saying just about anything.

Oh no, ace. It's not because it mentions race. It's because "cultural appropriation." If your friend is white and he likes Mexican stuff he's a racist because he's trying to move in on Mexican culture and his like of such somehow ruins the purity of Mexicans and their stuff.

On the other hand, if he *doesn't* like Mexican stuff then it's obviously because he's an intolerant, racisty bigot.

They've turned all of race relations into this gigantic Catch-22 where you're evil if you only really like white stuff or hang out with white people, etc, but you're also evil if you have friends of another ethnicity or skin color and like their stuff because you're forcing your whiteness onto them.

It's completely unwinnable. Just being a good person and treating others well is no longer sufficient for these cretins.

152 Ace sez:

The ONLY time in my life I was accused of racism was when I told the following joke, which is self-evidently the ironic sort of joke where the racist villain is the butt of the joke, rather than being an actually racist joke. It went like this:

-------------------

A black man accused of murder had mysteriously disappeared from the local jail before he could be transferred to the county prison. The cityfolk suspected that the local sheriff had secretly lynched the suspect, but the sheriff insisted the suspect had simply escaped.

A couple days later police divers dredged a nearby lake and discovered the inmate's body at the bottom. When the body was lifted onshore, it was completely wrapped in heavy chains.

The sheriff sauntered over and drawled, "Just like a ni&&er to steal more chains than he can swim with."

-------------------
See, the joke is making fun of the casual confident racism of the sheriff. It is NOT making fun of the lynched black guy.

But boy oh boy, did the young twentysomethings who heard the joke not understand the source of the humor.

They say that the hipster youth of today ae all about "irony" -- in fact, sociologists claim the "irony" is the defining personality trait of the hipster generation -- but in my observations, these idiots don't understand irony at all. They don't even know what it is.

163 British and American cinema-goers will not get to see a hugely popular French comedy because it has been rejected by film distributors who deem it politically incorrect and possibly racist.
"Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au Bon Dieu?" (Serial (Bad) Weddings) tells the tale of two stuffy, white, Catholic parents whose daughters horrify them by marrying men of other religions and ethnic backgrounds.
Three are already wed - to an Arab Muslim, a north African Jew, and a Chinese man - and Maman and Papa place all their hope in their youngest daughter, only to discover that she has promised herself to a man from Ivory Coast.
The movie has been seen by more than 12 million French but will not make it across the water because, according to the production company behind it, English-speaking audiences "would never allow themselves these days to laugh at blacks, Jews or Asians."

My understanding is that it refers to anything and everything that is not transgendered.

With particular emphasis on using it as a pejorative towards people who express the idea that, say, the gender you are born with cannot truly be changed; you can only alter your body to look different.

That would be "cisgendering." Basically the same verbal grenade as "hater" and "racist" to these nutjobs.

------------------------------

I've heard the opposite about Japan - i.e. that people will try to give you directions even if they don't know where the location is. And a friend of mine who taught in Korea, and goes back for a bit every few years, hasn't mentioned anything about that.

Of course, Japan might have changed recently. It's common knowledge that something is seriously screwed up over there right now, with a noticeable chunk of the young male population essentially rejecting sex.

Well SH, as an excuse to waste one more minute before doing long-deferred chores, I'll humor you, sorta, on your war-declaration thing.

The whole declaration of war discussion seems to proceed from odd premises. No magic, practical or constitutional,to "war" in the title. "Use of force" is a stupid modern bureaucratic/technocratic Beltwayism, but it's not explained by political cowardice, and has no effect on the real world.

In January 1991 and September 2001, there was no political difference between resolutions with/without "war" in them. No votes would have changed, no later political developments would have changed. And the language of resolutions had no effect on tactics or strategy - those tworesolutions *reflected* the goals and strategy, naturally, as there was collaboration between WH and Congress in drafting the language.

As you noted power of the purse is Congress' true whip hand (under the constitution, which as we see today is not self-enforcing). Vietnam 1974/5. Language of Tonkin Gulf Resolution had no effect on path of events.

Degree of congressional control over war fighting (aside from funding) will never be resolved once and for all, and constitution does not resolve it, but presence/absence of "war" in resolutions has no practical effect outside internet comment sections.

But not seeing race IS THE MOST INSIDIOUS FORM RACISM.

I call it the "draw a minority" trap. If you draw a minority 100% photographically correctly, someone will note the racial characteristics and call you a racist. But if you alter those characteristics, and make them bland and unpronounced, you're racist for hiding/not faithfully reproducing them.

Anyway, Ferrell has been profitting off personifying the worst stereotypes of American white guys for far too long. He recently bleated that fraternities should be banned because Oklahoma. 324 Look, diversity is wonderful and you are a decent caring person if you proclaim how wonderful diversity is regardless of race, creed, color or gender preference.

UNTIL, if you are a white male, you profess an approval of any PARTICULAR aspect of that diversity, because THEN you are taking personal enjoyment of it, which is EXPLOITIVE and so, RACIST.

It's simply really.

I imagine you could extrapolate prog rules from that somehow. Gay womym of color are less racist than white womyn of color, trans men of color are less racists than white trans men. It could probably be even used effectively at a further remove, to show how brown muslim men in the middle east have more right not to be exterminated than brown Jewish men because Judaism is a part of western culture and therefore approved of by white men and therefore RACIST.

328 I guess it's ironic that these SJWs, who style themselves as oh-so-sophisticated and artistic, are the ones dedicated to eradicating artistic expression and replacing it with rigid ideological propaganda.

It's funny, too. I remember back in Ye Olden Dayes when the Narrative was inevitably, "cool, free-thinking, edgy liberal shows up stodgy, oppressive conservative." Oh how things have changed with the ascension of full-fledged Progressivism.

Now it's the Progressives--these dour, witch-hunting Puritans--drunk on self-righteousness, cramping everyone's style. They're the ones frowning ominously at every stray utterance, searching for the slightest whiff of heresy; the ones sticking their noses into our proverbial bedroom, lecturing us on what we can say and eat and wear, what games we can play and what jokes we can tell. They've become everything they once sought to overthrow.

360 This is the end game to the whole process of demonization and other-ing of conservatives. It is to indoctrinate enough of the public to push farther and harder away from core American culture in such a manner as to alienate - permanently - those who stay with the mainstays of American culture. It is a way to permanently create a reflexive hate towards Those Who Differ, and to pre-define Those Who Differ as what we would normally call "non-insane citizens".

It's the madhouse prepping for war, it is the institutionalized psychotics organizing a parliament.

What it isn't is something that can be papered over or ignored. It can't be "healed" or compromised about. It is a permanent state of incompatible mindsets.

My Quantified Humor Theory states that the universe contains a fixed amount of humor. Hence, the more "comedians," the less humor is contained in their routines.

We apparently have reached Critical Humor Mass because there is so little that's truly funny these days. This phenomenon began in earnest right about the time Pauley Shore began to "perform."

Unfortunately, science has yet to devise a way to increase the supply of humor, so the only solution is to radically decrease the amount of people who consider themselves to be funny, along with their audience. How this is to be accomplished is still open to debate, but it has been determined that there are already plenty of food service personnel.

Much like whites were racists if they didn't accept blacks as equals, of course it didn't end there. Radical blacks went right on to demanding superiority and even lynching, raping, murdering whites as a right to get away with.

I'm also more sympathetic to the Christian apologetics project than Ace seems to be, just after listening to countless William Lane Craig debates, it still left me unconvinced, but it's not devoid of intellectually respectable content.
But now he's theAtheist of Spades.

Here we go:

The Washington Post reported Robertson used the story to address the question of whether atheists, because they dont believe in God, are unable to distinguish between good and evil acts.

The Christian Post website described the speech as more of a metaphor, noting Robertson wanted to drive home the point that disbelief can lead to unspeakable violence because there is no fear of judgment in the afterlife.

And so, taking the word of the WP, Salon and rightwingwatch.org as gospel, off to the battlements to defend the un-faithful!

If women really were being treated poorly in the workplace, why wouldn't some enterprising woman just start a business that hires onlywomen, and clean up?

The more the government interferes in this process, the more it suborns racism. When the government demonizes profits, it supports racism. When the government places barriers to starting a business, it supports racism. When the government prevents firing incompetent employees, it supports racism. Anything that prevents employers from maximizing their profit by hiring the most qualified applicants, supports racism.

That's sort of like my analogy of a street where there's a whites-only restaurant at one end and a blacks-only restaurant on the other end.

At first nobody has any choice which one to go to. Whites go to one and blacks go to the other.

Now suppose someone opens a mixed-race restaurant in the middle of the street. Then everybody has a choice, and can start doing things like comparing prices and the quality of the food.

But I still think each business owner in my example should have the right to run his business as he sees fit, and let the market decide.

And that also highlights the problem with Jim Crow laws. Segregation was mandated by the government, and business owners didn't have a choice in the matter.

Exactly. As with so many fascist policies, the businesses get the blame for what the government required. I *do* think people should be able to refuse to take peoples' money for any reason they wish if they are so foolish to do so. That doesn't mean allowing for even verbal assault, but a "We can't do business together," or even "I simply don't *want* to do business with you," should *always* be permissible.

I can extend my analogy further by including smoking policies. One restaurant owner in each category allows smoking, one doesn't, and one has smoking/non-smoking sections. Now there are nine restaurants, and any given person of either race can choose six of them.

That's freedom of choice, for both the owners and the customers.

I understand there were some conservatives in the 60s who thought the Civil Rights laws went too far for exactly this reason. Abolishing Jim Crow was one thing, but outlawing freedom of choice was quite another. Of course, they were labeled as racist by the left.

Ayn Rand said around that time, "Freedom of association includes the freedom not to associate."

So maybe knock off the slandering of an entire generation, huh? It comes across as easy cheap shots from cranky old fogies yelling at the damn kids to shut off the loud music and lay off the hot rodding.

556 Um, I am very sorry that the tender hearted Millenials got their feelings hurt here, but there is actual empirical data now that shows that the Millenial generation is actually less educated than previous generations. Furthermore, the vast majority of Millenials are very liberal having swallowed all the Howard Zinn swill that was spoonfed to them throughout their k-12 years and college, if they bothered to go. Millenials do not have the same work ethic, the same sense of consideration, and they certainly do not have very good manners. While there are many nice young people out there that do not fit this stereotype of the Millenial, by and large, the decent are far out numbered by the spoiled and snarky. As a Gen Xer, I've had to endure the proverbial patronizing pats on the head from the previous generations, but being lucky enough NOT to have been raised by the worst generation - the Baby Boomers - I had sense enough to shut my mouth, show respect for my elders, and realized that my youth and inexperience was something that was going to be exploited for all manner of gain, political and otherwise, whenever I forgot to give experience its due in the workplace. Now stop whining, look around at your generation, and decide which side you are on. Are you going to walk down the whiny, entitled path of your most of your peers, or are you going to outpace them by learning from those who've already done it before you got here?

About the same time that Islam became a race: when people decided that the ACTUAL definitions of words didn't really mean that much.

560 556 - See, that's the stuff I'm talking about. Condescending and snarky.

I think a lot of this slander comes from the bubble the internet afford us. What we see online, especially through conservative media like this site, is the most outrageous of the bunch, usually on incredibly liberal college campuses. Yet millennials aren't observing the middle-aged liberal buffoons running these campuses and fostering these environments and taking them as representative of their entire generation.

We take these insults personally because they're wrong. But all we can do is take our own experiences and form our worldview. Your opinions apparently comes through observing. Mine come through living and working among the youngest adult generation. And as soon as I'm finished wasting time arguing online, I'm going to go back to living my life the completely opposite way you say we do.

561 With all the trembling at "microaggressions" and "triggering", portraying people with non-liberal attitudes may increasingly be cited as "subjecting" snowflakes to language that they believe they shouldn't hear anymore.

562 "It's racist because it mentions race."

It actually doesn't, it mentions things that would describe a *culture*. Let's not catch their misuse of the language. The pure-blood natives are asian-asiatic strain, but they are enough mixed with European blood, that they are just *half* another race, if that's even valid.
