Duchovny, Anderson to Return for Tenth Season of X-Files, 13 Years After the Show Was Cancelled

Only six episodes, but kind of neat.

I'm not even a fan of the show, but it's neat to have old shows come back for a spell.

Gillian Anderson admits yes, she and Duchovny kind of hated each other.

This year Anderson told the Guardian’s Simon Hattenstone: "I mean, yes, there were definitely periods when we hated each other … Hate is too strong a word. We didn’t talk for long periods of time. It was intense, and we were both pains in the arse for the other at various times."

Of course, this isn't the only 90s show returning after a long hiatus -- Twin Peaks will also be returning for Season 3 in 2016.

The nine-episode run will go into production this year with an eye toward premiering in 2016, the year that marks the 25th anniversary of the final installment of the beloved cult drama's original run. Lynch and Frost are writing and producing the series, and Lynch will direct each episode. Beyond MacLachlan, no other cast members have confirmed involvement on the new run.

Interstellar is a 2:50 long science fiction space odyssey drama starring Matthew McConnaughey.

Despite its flaws, Interstellar was an interesting and entertaining film with the usual mix of science, magic, and wonder, and, of course, the obligatory spoiler: human folly.

At times I felt like I was watching an M.Night Shimalayandingdong movie, which is not necessarily a bad thing but a little bit of superstitious foolishness. Michael Caine reprises his role as Alfred from the Batman films, but now he's a physicist.

McConnaughey is of course Batman in this movie -- with a family...and a spaceship. (Christopher Nolan directed it, btw.) Matt Damon is in it, unfortunately, and he sucks. Matt Damon is an awful actor. And his character could've been played by anybody and played better.

As with all these deep space movies, it bites off more than it can chew. The film raises lots of questions; many interesting and deep-thought-provoking. But many of the questions, especially the big ones, go unanswered or are answered with magic and hope and promises kept and, chiefly, an Unknown Guiding Hand from far, far away.

Overall, I liked Interstellar for fantasy and fun. See it.

The clip is of the so-called "Black Lodge," which is an unexplained but numinous otherworldly place in the woods where, I guess, other world converge upon and blur into our own. Kyle MacLaughin (Agent Dale Cooper) goes there in the last episode, and encounters the ghost of Laura Palmer (?), her doppleganger (the doppleganger of her ghost, I guess), the Man From Another Place (the strange dwarf who speaks in riddles in dreams), and an Evil version of himself (his doppleganger).

It doesn't really make sense. The show occasionally used these very odd dream sequences to foreshadow the future, but there wasn't much foreshadowing because they were incomprehensible. (Indeed, it is almost certain they could not contain any meaning about the future because they made up the show week to week and so didn't see the future themselves.)

this sequence ended with the evil doppleganger of Dale Cooper exiting the Black Lodge, with Cooper himself presumably imprisoned in this otherworldly place.

155 I will admit to being a huge X-Files nerd in the 90's. So I'm just gonna ask how exactly they bring this show back? The last we saw Mulder and Scully in TV land, Mulder had broken out of a secret military prison after being condemned to death by a tribunal. He and Scully were on the run from the government. That's how the show ended.

The second movie had Mulder work on a case as a consultant in exchange for clearing his name. So, maybe not on the run from the Feds anymore, but I highly doubt they're getting their jobs back after all the crap that went on in those last couple of seasons.

Much as I loved this show, it jumped the shark in late season six and I just don't see how they successfully bring it back even for a few episodes.

I always thought the way they ended the show (TP, I mean), was rather spiteful. It's one thing to have bad guys end up with bad ends, but they deliberately put the purest of their characters through hell. And for what? In the end, nothing.

Somebody, whoever it was, who made the decision to end it that way, and I suspect it was Lynch, did so because he/they was/were mad at the network for cancelling them.

Lynch is a genius, but he needs someone grounded in reality to rein him in.

See, I never understood the draw of something so unrelentingly depressing anyway. I mean, okay, it's post-apocalyptic fiction. Got it. Sure.

But shouldn't the be *some* hope? And not "oh, look there's hope. D*mn, dashed. Oh, look! More hope! D*mn, dashed..." but a real "If we can just get here" or "If we can just obtain that," or something, "Then we'll be safe/the zombies will all die/humanity will rise" whatever.

Of course, they don't want to do that, either, because then the series would be expected to grant that closure at some point, and why limit themselves. Who cares about story-telling and dramatic tension?

Yeah, I was in love with GA during her run on the X-Files. I read somewhere recently that she's gone a little lezzy, which kinda makes me love her even more now.

As far as bringing the show back, ok. But the original show did last too long. If they want to get a new series off with a bang, then Mulder's long-lost sister has to appear in Episode 1. Her appearance can send the duo off on a string of wacky new government conspiracy adventures. If the new shows fall back onto a continual search for the sister, then count me out.

A little too much of what?

My understanding of the show (I don't watch) is that in the first season they just had to get to (someplace, I don't remember). They got there, and then that didn't work.

And in the 2nd season, they just had to get (someplace else). They got there, and then that didn't work.

That's exactly what I don't want.

I mean a real: "Civilization has been re-established in location X. There's hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of zombies between us and them. That doesn't include the feral gangs and natural hazards. If we can get there, then we'll finally be *safe.*"

And then have the series ever working toward that specific goal. And place of refuge in between then take on a lot more import, actually. They've found a safe place, do they stay and try to survive on their own, or do they just rest up a bit and then go again? Do some stay behind? What if the "safe place" winds up not being so safe?

All kinds of drama (good drama) could result.

295 Jupiter Ascending - Plot holes the size of a Winnebago, horrific scenery chewing acting - great special effects, costumes and a fun anti-bureaucracy scene a net positive go-see
Kingsmen - very fun romp, definite go-see

301 A little too much of what?

My understanding of the show (I don't watch) is that in the first
season they just had to get to (someplace, I don't remember). They got
there, and then that didn't work.

And in the 2nd season, they just had to get (someplace else). They got there, and then that didn't work.

That's exactly what I don't want.

I mean a real: "Civilization has been re-established in location X.
There's hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of zombies between us
and them. That doesn't include the feral gangs and natural hazards.
If we can get there, then we'll finally be *safe.*"

And then have the series ever working toward that specific goal.
And place of refuge in between then take on a lot more import, actually.
They've found a safe place, do they stay and try to survive on their
own, or do they just rest up a bit and then go again? Do some stay
behind? What if the "safe place" winds up not being so safe?

All kinds of drama (good drama) could result.

The entire premise is predictated on one failure after another. With good writing and a premise, you accept the journey, ad even share in it.

Mostly, you know that Gilligan is gonna fuck up somehow. Almost all TV is Gilligan's island.

I like it, it's very different from the movie (which I just happened to catch a few weeks back). More involved, natch, since they spend more time on character development.

363 Posted by: Lizzy at March 24, 2015 04:46 PM (V+8gv)

Yeah.

In a way, it's a trap a lot of modern TV falls into.

If it were more episodic (that is: one episode didn't really affect the next very much) like some of the older shows were they could get away with "Here's the premise, here's the situation: go!"

But almost all scripted TV now is serial, not episodic. So what happened last episode directly affects this episode. But if you're going to do that, as a writer, then there has to be a story-arc, and closure to story lines.

BtVS was very good at this, for the most part. Season 1 was very episodic, but after that the series was much more serial. Nevertheless, at the end of each episode the audience felt something had been advanced, if not accomplished. At the end of each season, the world had been saved again. Stories had arcs, and they got wrapped up.

It seems (from what people are saying) that TWD is *not* good at this.

Posted by: Feh at March 24, 2015 04:45 PM (zbxtS)

That's pretty much how I watch now. Let a whole season, or a season and the next few eps of the season after, rack up. Then watch them all continuously. Is easier to remember what is going on and you don't have to deal with cliffhangers.

The problems is I have to take it in doses, or it really is like binge eating for the brain. If it is a majorly cliffhanger-y show like Walking Dead, instead of watching from the beginning of the episodes, I'll stop in the middle where there is almost always a lull and pick it back up again the next day, turning the cliffhanger at the end into the middle section of my watch time. I'm sure the writers would be appalled, but whatever I do what I want.

The biggest problem is you can't do the watercooler talking about it at work the next day, but that sort of socialization is dying off anyway.

An exploration of human nature is great and all, but if the only thing I have to look forward to is death and despair, why should I care? The TWD world is basically just a crapsack world now.
- Burn The Witch

This is why I avoided all contact with the Game of Thrones series, book and TV. It just sounds depressing, and when I read I want escapist, fun, reading. Terry Pratchett, not GRR Martin.

377 It really is Rick's story, and what we're seeing is his evolution. It's been said that Rick is essentially at the point where Shane was when Rick decided Shane needed to die.

At this point the question is, can he come back?

^^^^^

I actually think Shane is a character that *could* have been redeemed had it not been for that ho-bag Laurie who kept stringing him along. Every single time it looked like he was finally getting over his obsession with her she'd pull him aside and give him the whole, "Oh Shane, I'm so scared. I don't think Rick can do what needs to be done to keep Carl and me safe." Bitch led him on and drove him nuts.

HOWEVER, I also think Shane accepted the reality of what kind of shit they were in from almost the beginning, as opposed to the the rest of the group who have all taken all this time to come to grips with the new world around them. Shane did what needed to be done. He just seemed like a psycho because of (a) bitch face Laurie, and (b) no one else was there yet. They were all trying to hold on to their notions of being civilized at that point, and he wasn't.

It's a weird dynamic on the show right now. There's always been the tension between trying to survive in the new reality and at the same time hold on to basic human goodness, especially since those two things are so at odds so much of the time on the show. Right now we're seeing the group all having basically reached the mental place where Shane was at in seasons 1 and 2 juxtaposed with the people in the town who have all basically been walled up away from reality since almost the beginning of the apocalypse. The townspeople are sort-of parallel to where the group as a whole was in the first two seasons. They just have no clue. While they're having their stupid cocktail parties and walking their doggies the world outside the walls is living hell. And they are completely unprepared for disaster striking. All it would take is one person taking a tumble the wrong way or choking on their chocolate ration in their own pad and keeling over for the shit to hit the fan in the town, and these idjits are so soft they would all die.

470 I blame X-Files for the current trend of TV shows to have gigantic overarching super stories and constant references to dark secrets rather than just telling stories and having events. You can't just have an hour long drama, it has to feed into the bigger overall story arc which its self is a secret part of a greater deeper story.

As long as X-Files was just about the weird events and monsters, it was fine, but the deep conspiracy shows just turned me away. And when it ran, it was the only flavor out there like that. Nobody else was doing dark sci fi/fantasy/monster hunter stuff. Now theres 18 different shows of the type out there, and it just doesn't stand out. Particularly without cutie pie main actors.

As for Twin Peaks... it was horrible nonsense to begin with, why on earth...?

---------------------

The worst of it is that the writers are only slightly less clueless about the conspiracy than the viewers are. They just throw in a conspiracy, and figure that they'll make it up as they go along.

One of the most revealing bits about the Battlestar Galactica reboot was reading a comment by the head writer in which he started a meeting on the reveal of the "missing" cyclons by basically saying, "Who would really blow everyones' minds if it was discovered that they were cylons?" i.e. three seasons in, even the head writer didn't know who the mysterious missing cylons were.

TNG was great after season 1 and most of season 2. It found it's own vibe and got away from doing repeats of TOS. It has one of the best series finales ever and the Borg are actually fresh and menacing before later series completely ruined them.

DS9 was okay but you can tell Moore was running it the last few seasons.

Voyager just never got going Berman and Braga never accepted their premise of the show and got stuck in a rut.

Enterprise.....never do prequels. But once B&B were gone season 4 actually showed a lot more promise. It was about the best you could hope for out of a prequel series. However, ignore the horrid final episode.

521 I kind of liked Deep Space Nine ok but Voyager was awful. The Next Generation was ... it had moments but I just couldn't get past the main characters. Riker was worthless, Worf was never able to actually do anything and seemed pointless on a ship dedicated to never fighting if at all possible. His whole job seemed to be to point out the most obvious, reasonable response and get shot down by Picard. The empath was only able to sense the most obvious thing everyone with a shred of perception and common sense could tell already, and the doctor couldn't even figure out a common cold. I didn't mind the engineer Geordi, he was the only really competent guy in the crew, but Data? They made a toaster an officer? One that they knew virtually nothing about? That keeps freaking out and taking control of the ship?

And after the 16th "holodeck goes berserk and takes over the ship/tries to kill everyone" episode, you'd think maybe the captain might just shut it down and get rid of the damn thing.

Plus, the conspiracy angle was far more effectively fleshed-out and more compelling than the Syndicate's shenanigans on the X-Files. Besides, Lance Henriksen!
