The cobalts? Probably.

I was rereading In The Frame by Dick Francis the other day and there's a part in there discussing how one of the painters was careful with the chemical composition of his paints because he was looking 300 years down the line and didn't want them to decay. Best part is that Francis made this a plot point.

I like that painting. Very calming.

That's fair. I'm not into the prosperity gospel - I'm quite happy with the Catholic interpretation - that I am a sinner who needs to be saved. But that allows me to listen to Osteen differently. He isn't a Christian pastor to me - he is a motivator who uses Christian themes. I'm fine with that.

Still I fail to see why Cooke felt the need to take a shot at him in a piece criticizing Cruz.

I think the other other commenter is right - Cooke (being the atheist he is) is uncomfortable with politicians and speakers who directly reference God and his blessings on the US. I think he thinks its ok to believe in God - but please don't bring him into the public square.

I've never understood that.

Religion, specifically Christianity, has some mighty good references, with the Founders at the top of my list. There can be no argument that they were geniuses (genii) with astounding insight into both politics and human nature (aka Psychology).

Many great philosophers and scientists were also guided by God and His Light, like Einstein. Just about every smart person I've ever known believed in Him.

A local resident who guided rescuers to the Mariaud Pass says he saw wreckage and has no doubt that the plane flew directly into the mountainside (possibly cliff).

We can then fire everybody at the Bureau of Land Management and probably of half the people at the Department of the Interior.

What will get really entertaining will be when Democrats try to explain to the new black landowners why they should not be allowed to get rich by signing contracts to allow oil companies to drill and frack beneath their land.

I won't go this far. For the most part, I think he is a good read. This is probably why I am bothered. Every now and then he takes shots at people for no good reason. He could simply state that he prefers politicians who do not talk as openly about their faith as Cruz does. But that doesn't raise the heads of the intelligentsia class. Its as if he says things just to let them know that while he may be pro 2nd A he is still one of them.

I will definitely read him with a more critical lens. And maybe I'll come to the same conclusion as you.

But I can say this - I have no interest in buying his books. I'll buy books of people who I think are deserving - because I want to support their voice (e.g., Kevin Williamson, Jay Cost).

222 I did three years of "service" in the Peace Corps. Like most other
volunteers, I never did so much drinking and dancing in my life. Rest of
the time was spent looking for something useful to do, which was near
impossible without money, tools, vehicles or computers. I worked
average of maybe 10 hours a week, which is about 10 hours a week more
than 90% of volunteers since I actually had some relevant experience.

Don't believe the glowing Descriptions of
Service you may run across by ex-volunteers. Mostly BS that Peace Corps coaches people what
to write in exit sessions (which is why they all sound the same) Most useful thing Peace Corps did was complete my transition into full conservative as it made blindingly clear the futility of touchy-feely govt programs aimed at helping people.

AmeriCorps
the govt service program is probably the same but a domestic version. I
ran across some while doing volunteer work for the Red Cross years
ago. Nice kids but out much effort for mor ethan short periods. This is
the fundamental problem with volunteer organizations, especially those
that want to save the world. Most people will only work for hard for
free (i.e. giving back) for short periods before they lose interest or
become disillusioned.

First in the blood of the men who faught a bloody civil war to end it.

Second in the laws and amendments that were passed to make slaves full citizens under the law equals of all men

Third in the trillions of dollars in direct and indirect transfers to affected groups.

And last in laws of affirmative discrimination and preferencing.

There was a dumped baby near my work last year--dumped it less than a block from a fire station in a warehouse bathroom (and went back to work!?). Whoever listed nations that the USA should defend to the death
excluded Mexico. We share too big a border with Mexico to let some
Stalin take them over. We would have to defend them.

If it wasn't for the resulting political, logistical, and other
nightmares, I'd just annex the whole pile and call it the "Southern
Resource and Buffer Zone".

Do it in stages. Start with Baja California. How much is land worth in San Diego? How much is land worth in Tijuana? The only difference is which country they are in. Baja has 2000 miles of beach front property. Developing that to US standards would keep tens of thousands of people employed for decades and provide some nice places for Baby Boomers to retire to. It would also help to work out the processes by which the rest of the country can be absorbed.

(Pastor) Lee Jong-rak is the creator of the Baby Box. His Baby Box is the first and only box in Korea that is for collecting abandoned babies who are physically or mentally handicapped, or are just unwanted by their mothers.

Hundreds of unwanted babies are abandoned on the side of the street in South Korea every year. Jong-rak knew he needed to set up a way to save the lives of these precious babies. He built a drop box on the side of his home with a humble sign reading, "Place to leave babies."

Yes. He should be.
And I'm eternally thankful that He isn't.

But I believe that God would rather we be honest about our feelings/beliefs about him at any given time. So, yes, sometimes people are going to be angry with God- and being honest about that is better than *not* being honest about it.

I *also* believe that, given enough thought/study/distance, you will realize that it was you who was in the wrong much more often than not.

I'm going to go out on a limb that Cruz's personality, demeanor and delivery are genuine and ingrained and are not easily changeable.

I support Cruz because a. He seems like an agenda driven conservative which is what we need right about now if we are to save this country, that is if it can be saved.

And b. He comes from Texas and can be approximated if not replaced. The other candidates like Walker, Christie and to al lesser extent Jindals cannot be replaced as easily.

But as others have said Cooke seems to have a hatred of avowed agenda driven conservatives and more than likely loves him some Jeb Bush style moderates.

>>I too think Cruz can be a little to schmaltzy but so F--king what?

He's an opinion writer who gets paid to give his opinion. He may be right, he may be wrong, just another opinion. And it's not like every other candidate in history doesn't get criticized for style as much as substance. Go back to the Kennedy Nixon debate. Those who listened on radio gave Nixon the win, those who watched on TV gave it to Kennedy.

Politics is at least as much about style as anything else. Obama was elected, twice, on style over any substance. How many times have we heard pundits talk about the "who would you want to have a beer with?" question? What that hell does that have to do with substance? But that's a big piece of how we elect politicians in this day and age.

I admit that while I agree with Cruz on pretty much all policy positions I also find his style irritating. This was the true genius of Reagan, he could deliver the same message and have you wanting more. Cruz isn't at that level yet. If a little criticism of his style helps him connect better it works for me.

Best description I heard of hell, is the soul is exposed to God for a moment, then removed from God's presence. No fires, no devils with pitchforks, simply the absence of God's presence, after having experienced it.

That is all the hell one would need.

Eternal? I don't know. What would a thousanth of a fraction of a second seem like after having God's presence removed? Possibly an eternity.

It boils down to a simple premise for me...

If God does decide everything, then we do not have Free Will.

If we do not have Free Will, then our decisions are essentially made for us.

Then how could a Just God, then JUDGE us... either send us to Heaven
or Hell, based on decisions, that we didn't really make anyway?

Posted by: BB Wolf at March 24, 2015 11:38 AM (qh617)"

It is my understanding of John Calvin's teachings that we all deserve to brn in Hell forever but out of God's divine mercy He picks a few Elect to spare from Hell. The people who are going to Heaven were chosen at the beginning of time and there is not really anything you can do to move from one group to the other. Another wrinkle in Calvin's teaching is that God gives indications of who is in the Elect group by how well they are doing on Earth. So for many or most people, God has predestined that their time on Earth will be hard and then they will die and burn in Hell forever.

Perhaps some Calvinist can explain to me where I have misstated any part of John Calvin's central thesis but this is my understanding of his teachings.

442 Ted Cruz. I like the guy, he says more things that sound like me and what I support than any other candidate. And he can deliver a hell of a speech.

But two words: Eddie Haskell.

Watching his Seth Myers interview, he was blowing a lot of smoke up Seth's ass, which I get, and you kind of have to do with a media type, and he took him on on global warming BS so that's goof. But the missing component, I think, was he was unable to fake sincerity.

For me, that doesn't disqualify him, but I do think that people like to have their sincerity faked genuinely (see PRESIDENT Bill Clinton, for example, and our beloved Captain Bullshit) and Cruz has not arrived there. That will be a problem for the voters who want that. Regardless of what they think about his stand on issues, etc.

I don't think Eddie Haskell showed up at the speech at Liberty. It was a very good, heartfelt speech that fits in the mold of what LIVs want - a good struggling life story where women are center stage.

If he can do that in all of his appearances, he will do well.

It is generally true that the purpose of each Gospel is different enough that we can take from each its purpose, and not have to sweat the inconsistencies.

That being said, I cannot quite wrap my head around John's depiction of the crucifixion. Either Jesus really had humanity, or He did not. John's version seems to eliminate the idea that Jesus had reason to fear His Father's abandonment, when the other Gospels, and Luke in particular, make it quite clear that He did.

The risk is there, for all of us. Anyone who thinks his or her place in God's presence is assured has no idea. How could any one of us have less doubt than Jesus?

That and maybe a strategery coach. This was my complaint about the shutdown thing in 2014.

All of us wanted the same outcome, get rid of Obamacare, it was just the strategy that was in question. There was no way to win that shutdown and as smart as he is I'm sure Cruz knew that. It was great for his image with conservatives but it not only was destined to lose it also pissed off a lot of Republicans who were put on the spot by his "you're either with my strategy or you're a RINO traitor" approach. In my experience, people don't like being called out as traitors just because they don't agree with your approach.

Cruz is a gifted debater and a very smart guy but I think he does himself a disservice with the my way or the highway approach. He is going to need a lot more than just movement conservatives if he wants to win the presidency and that requires a bit of humility and coalition building. If Reagan could do that and still be considered a conservative hero Cruz better learn that lesson too.

You know, the funny thing is - about a year or so back, trying to break a writer's block (**SPOILER ALERT** - it didn't work), I took two characters from the novel I'm working on and wrote a porn scene for them. And it actually wasn't half bad. So for a moment, I thought, "perhaps I should just write an out-and-out heavy-R-close-to-X book." But the moment passed and I went back to struggling over my manuscript as it is.

That, and I don't think a porn novel set during silent film days would really sell. A Man With A Maid did the whole period piece seduction-cum-orgy much better.

479 @405 I'm guessing the passengers never saw it coming.

I think this plays into the Will of God arguments as well, but here goes: I don't mind (so much) the idea of dying like an Ernie Gann co-pilot. What would irk the shit out of me, for a couple of minutes anyway, would be to see a problem, report it, and be patted on the head by flight crew as the aircraft proceeds to certain doom. It would be fine if I were in the right seat. Not spam in a can.

Kind of a Shatner/Twilight Zone thing. I once had the rearmost seat on a rear-engined jet, didn't like the feel as #2 spooled up (that titanium alloy disk being, like, right next to my head and all), and pitched an almighty bitch to Stewardess, which we used to have in those days. I do not know why she took me at my word, but she went to a phone, said a word, and the engine speed came right down. Couple of quick blips, and we wheeled back to the gate and changed planes. No, I did not get a big reward, nor did Q.Arrius adopt me.

Sure, I felt good all day. But lurking in the back of my head is the notion that One Day, I'll notice something (On The Wing!), and not manage to convince. True, I do not fly near as much any more. Or listen to Creedence, either.

481 When theological questions arise in Ace comments, I'm tempted to jump in and set everybody right, since I know it all. But, it wouldn't do any good. Folks would just argue with me, anyway.

Some four decades ago, a friend who had fallen asleep on the couch, awoke to the tv. Back then we had three broadcast channels and it was the middle of the night, so they were running their "public service time" show, a collection of local (Tulsa) preachers discussing religious matters. My friend watched in sleepy stupor for a while, then drolly observed...

"These people are very confused!"

It's stuck with me all these years. Maybe you had to be there.

To be honest, I don't really worry what John Calvin taught. I am a Roman Catholic and view Calvin as a popular heretic who led a lot of people off into the weeds. To be honest I find Islam less twisted than John Calvin's teachings and Islam sets the standard for twisted.

I believe in free will and I believe that if you wind up in Hell it is because you put yourself there by your own choice, not because God created you for damnation.

He can be difficult to listen to sometimes because of the rage, but his knowledge of constitutional law is impressive.

You might try some of his writing, as his writing style is totally different than his radio show.

Love God before all things

Love your neighbor as you love yourself.

These were the two NEW commandments Jesus laid on his disciples. To carry this message to all nations.

In German, the "Good News" is the 'Gospel'. Maybe the best news for all men and women, everywhere.

491 And I don't think FSOG would have been so successful if it had been written under a man's name. Didn't the author start out commenting off on some "Twilight" fan fiction and branch out from there. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think too many men were big fans of "Twilight". I don't know a single man who saw it, and I really don't know anyone over 30 or so who did either. I saw scads of teens girls. FSOG seems to be a happening for teen girls grown up.

494 God gives indications of who is in the Elect group by how well they are doing on Earth

Ancient pet peeve of mine, right up there with "Giving Back" etc. When you talk about the "Work Ethic," especially if (generational thing) you put "Protestant" in front of it, this is what you mean. Not being raised right, enjoying the satisfaction of a job well done, fair day's work for day's pay, or any of that. It's the doctrine of the elect.

According to some bull-goose sociologist (OK, it's Max Weber), the opposite is a sort of Catholic Laziness Ethic, with lots of bingo festivals, Good Works, and easy forgiveness. And what we all say about imported Latinos now, my white-side Prussian Four-Bears said about all those central-European Catholics coming in by the boatload. When one grandfather married Across That Line, his family did not speak to him for years. To his credit, she was French'n'Injun, and hotter'n a firecracker. Plus, he made a Lutheran of her.

We seldom think back to those days, but I can assure you it was a Big Deal Indeed when JFK was running.

495 He was betrayed by his side who were afraid to do what was right. He has been vindicated by the mess which is Obamacare, which contrary to your prediction has not destroyed itself.

So tell me, if every single Republican in Congress back then had voted to keep the shutdown in place, how would they win? You think Reid and Obama would have caved and compromised on Obama's singular piece of legislation? Show one piece of evidence that leads you to that conclusion. It was never going to happen.

As to Obamacare not collapsing, you've got to be kidding me. Have you heard what's going on at the IRS, at the SC? Over 40 rural hospitals have closed since Obamacare came into full affect and more are on the way. You expected it to collapse overnight with Obama rewriting the law on the fly to protect it?

I'm off to the doctor right now. If you haven't been in the last year you should give it a go. It's oodles of fun.

Obamacare will collapse. Would have happened sooner if Romney had been elected but that ship has sailed and now we have to do it the hard way.

I'm a Southern BaptiPresbyLutheran who believes the very same thing. God offers salvation to any who will accept it. He's NOT exclusive, except to those who reject him.

And the reason for all the denominations is living overseas-you find the church that speaks English. You never really know what you are going to get, and you are happy when they preach the Word, and not some newfangled, hip view of the Word that adds or subtracts to it. That's a lot harder to find than it sounds. Especially in Muslim countries.
