Starbucks Dials Back Their racialist Campaign Dear Starbucks: 1. America is not a college campus. 2. You are not the faculty. 3. (long) Far from teaching SOF troops to operate the mechanism of a police state, exercises like Jade Helm give SOF troops critically needed experience operating against and inside the territory of a police state. Normally the "police" and "secret police" role players are selected from soldiers and real police. The "guerillas" can be conventional Army or Guard soldiers, or even ROTC cadets, friendly foreign troops, and in one case I'm aware of, were civilian volunteers. (The SJA put the kibosh on ever doing that again. Unfortunately). Think about the N.B.A. further. The skills necessary to be a basketball player, especially height, are highly hereditary. But the N.B.A. is a meritocracy, with your performance easy to evaluate. If you do not play well, you will be cut, even if the team is the New York Knicks and your name is Patrick Ewing Jr. Father-son correlation in the N.B.A. is only one-eleventh as high as it is in the Senate. Repeat comment from false ONT.
The Leviathan is being somewhat pilloried in the comments section, with claims that it's a giant Dune ripoff. Since Blomkamp (District 9) is involved in it, look for a heavy serving of a ham-fisted message in the movie. Perhaps the Leviathan is actually a gentle, intelligent creature, and our thirst for its eggs is akin to our "thirst" for oil and gas. Or maybe the Leviathan actually is the progenitor of the species in District 9 and wants revenge on humanity for our poor treatment of the "prawns". In DC, the Display Ship Barry at the Navy Yard is going to be dismantled in place over the next months. The Douglass Bridge (aka. the South Capitol Street Bridge) is soon going to be rebuilt and replaced with a fixed span. The Barry has been sitting in the fine water of the Anacostia River for decades and the hull isn't in great shape. Since it will be stuck in place a couple years from now, it'll be gone by October.

I think the podcast talked about the Starbucks race thing and mentioned the Open Carry controversy as well.
How all the big swinging gun dicks that demand to walk everywhere with their AR-15 were going into Starbucks if the local law allowed it and Starbucks pulled the "we just want to sell coffee and not be the venue for a political statement." Ace and them were wondering about how it went from not wanting a political statement to trying to really make one. They thought it was because of Ferguson. I think the answer is much simpler. The Open Carry thing is more conservative and they didn't want it there so they pitched the capitalist justification to stop it. Their #racetogether crap was good little white liberal thinking and thus they wanted to push it because that is how they think. Posted by: buzzion at March 23, 2015 11:08 PM (zt+N6) 44

BC, what about all the speeches politicians give at bases and camps on deployments? Pretty sure those are compulsory attendance as well.
I fail to see any reason for outrage. He couldn't sell tickets in advance for a campaign event if he hasn't formally declared the campaign beforehand. Also, while it is Liberty, it's still a college as well. The kids might have to sit through it, but they only applauded if they felt like it. Infidel,
I don't trust Paul in addition to cray genes. He's forged alliance with Mitch, in what I see as his support for one year law change to Kentucky laws that prohibit candidates from being on more than one ballot per election year. Paul wants KY to be Caucus for 2016, but revert back to law the next year. It shows he thinks he's above the LAW! If he's so confident, run for POTUS & he may be able to get senate seat back. So, over-under odds the 'Leviathan' is just a really whizzy 'Moby Dick?' With a bit of over-harvesting concern thrown in, despite the example of history making the case for carefully managing this critical resource until a substitute is found or synthesized?I find it remarkable that a crew with any measure of experience would just float in place while a massive pissed-off beast is lurking about with lots of cover. I would expect that to call for a tense evasion pattern of movement until they have a location for the beast.

GardenWeb Topics /Garden Forums /Miniature Roses
How to save a potted gift rose Although I do not profess to being any type of expert on miniature roses, I find the pretense of having "toss away" roses obscene. That is what some people have called them here on the mini rose forum. These potted gift roses (also known as grocery store roses) can easily be saved with very little effort. Things you will need: A large mixing bowl or bucket  One 6" pot per plant or two 12" pots  Potting soil  it can have slow release fertilizer but NO water crystals What to do: 1. Fill bowl or bucket with enough water to cover all the roots of the plants 2. Remove rose from pot and place in bowl, let sit for a few minutes 3. slowly "swish" the rose plants back and forth to loosen as much dirt as possible from the roots 4. When you have gotten as much soil off as possible, slowly start pulling the plants apart. Be very gentle so as to break as few roots as possible. The best way is to jiggle the roots around until one of the plants starts tilting. Then slowly pry the roots apart. It helps to return to water every now and then to swish the roots around again. ( Note: donÂt worry if you loose some of the roots. ..there really isnÂt a way to avoid it from happening, especially if there is a strong network of roots growing) 5. When plants are separated, plant one each in a pot or alternatively, several around the perimeter of a larger pot. 6. Water pots and place in a well lit place but out of direct sunlight for a few days. Notes: Soil  Use regular, good quality, potting soil. It is ok if it has slow release fertilizer, but no fertilizer is better. Do NOT use soil with water retention crystals. (Although peat moss is ok) If the plants are waterlogged (the soil from the original pot is soggy and boggy, the leaves are all turning yellow, etc) it is best to withhold water for the first 12 to 24 hours after replanting (this gives the roots a chance to dry out a little and excess moisture will be leached into the new dry soil). After that time, water well to make sure that there are no air pockets from when you potted up. (  note: this is after you have put the rose in its new pot, you can still use the bucket of water to separate them) Keep the newly potted roses out of direct sun for a couple of days. After that, acclimate it to direct sunlight. Once the rose is established (about 2-4 weeks after repotting) start fertilizing. You can tell if it has established itself when new growth starts forming Posted by: Ira Weatheral at March 24, 2015 12:26 AM (qry2M) 298

I'm toasting my victory over the judicial system with a cheap/decent Spanish red. Jury duty. Actually get picked for a civil case, medical malpractice.
Judge asks if anyone thinks they can't be impartial, blah blah blah, I raised my hand and had a weird dialogue with His Honor explaining how it would be unfair to plaintiff for me to be on the jury, as I don't think jury trials are a suitable method of resolving medical malpractice cases. He doesn't really get it, but is slightly annoyed. (at end of this exchange I turned to Juror #5, next to me, and whispered "well that should take care of me", he laughed in agreement) Defense counsel was querying jury collectively if they agreed they should be "directed" by expert testimony. Some mumbles in the box, lawyer repeated question (even less articulately the second time), I spoke up and said "uh, expert testimony should be CONSIDERED as evidence, it does not ordain or determine a verdict or a judgement". Judge interrupts to say "yes, he's right" and shoots me a semi-eye roll at the defense lawyer. My awe of the majesty of the judicial system and its personnel, to be honest, was taking some hits (!!!!!). In our post-rational, post-constitutional, post-practically literate, post-American times, we hardy band of survivors can almost smell each other. So the college econ professor in the first row, after replying to a weird question from defense counsel ("what's the first thing of when you hear 'medical malpractice suit'?" WTF?) by saying "well, I know there's a whole industry built up around it ... etc." leans back and shoots me an eye-brow raising look. Anyway, the plaintiff's lawyerjust blurts out me, and the college prof, as her two dismissals. Judge corrects her, says the two sides take turns doing this, one juror per turn. I get up, sit down, econ prof does the same, then judge says "OK what the hell you are dismissed numbers 4 and 7". Chuckles from all corners of the room. As I exit, I whisper to the bailiff - referencing my volunteered (sincere, long-held) views on med malpractice jury trials - "gee, that's a shocker, me being dismissed, huh?". He laughed and nodded. MH, a regret with the duration of a fewnanoseconds did cross my mind - stay, and at least try to ensure that if the plaintiff has a poor case, he doesn't get anything. I resisted this feeling, successfully. Other highlights. Jury lounge staff who, despite doing this 4 days a week, sound like they have never seen a Vietnamese or Chinese name. Sheesh. Hilarious failed efforts to pronounce them over the PA. Shmaltzy juror "orientation" video starts out with "CA is the greatest state in the country" - I heard at least two distinct snickers in the room, apart from my own incompletely suppressed guffaw. Also saw some heads shaking (older heads). Also - the standard pablum about the constitutionand our unique American system now have gone from falling flat to being unintentional parody - for those who are aware and think once in a while. The judge repeated some of the pablum, esp. about the majesty of the jury system (which, for criminal trials, I still somewhat buy). After our little altercation, I was dying to ask him if he had any experience of civil (Napoleonic, panel of judges) courts and trials. I'm sure he didn't. And my only experience is hardly typical. Deep involvement in the only international humanitarian law trial conducted by a court of national jurisdiction (not like Nuremburg or the Far east tribunals or Rwanda, etc.) "I can say no more" Posted by: rhomboid at March 24, 2015 12:46 AM (afQnV) Posted by: Ira Weatheral at March 24, 2015 12:46 AM (qry2M) 344

I'm happy to see Ted Cruz throw his hat in the ring. I'm not inclined to support him for President right now for one reason... I think we need someone like him in the Senate, and if he leaves to Senate to become President we won't have anyone quite like him in the Senate.
Still, I'll be happy to support Cruz if my first choice, Scott Walker, implodes. This certainly seems possible, given the way Walker's sort of been pandering recently. What I like about Walker is his history of fighting the worst elements of the Left and winning. In a frickin' blue state (Wisconsin). And, he was born in another state that has turned blue in recent years (Colorado), so I think he can win both those states and thus open up new avenues of victory. But this recent thing of him pandering to the worst elements of the kinda-sorta Right that in practice tends to turn right around and vote Democrat has to stop. I know I've made some fairly hard-line statements that it's Walker or I stay home, but I'm willing to bend on that for Cruz. Not for anyone else, though, I think. The NRA never loses (much) because they have a single issue to deal with and they do not relent. Ever. Did an endless trial in DC one summer. Attempted murder, drug stuff. Quite interesting. Do *not*, if young, black, and obviously incredibly guilty, draw a jury with lots of older black women. Hilarious. They wanted to draw and quarter the guy, just based on their (probably sound) horse-sense about such young men in their community. Semi-fibbed to avoid a civil case. Uh, not just "a civil case". The second Microsoft anti-trust fiasco in federal district court. Sweet-talked Judge Kotelly-whatshername, semi-fibbed about an upcoming trip to Vietnam. Thanks be to Allah I did that, don't recall but that sucker dragged on for months. I don't count today as cheating to get dismissed, as I have long held that view about malpractice cases. But seeing how unimpressive almost all the people involved were is a data point.Wow. And I might look up the econ prof. Hard to imagine, but he sounded like a sane guy. The A-to-D student needs challenges. Regular school will be boring. As for the Cs and Bs student, if hooked up with the higher-achieving sibling the latter will take care of the former in class. I can assure you of it. But while this student can get the homework help he/she also needs to learn where to thrive outside the sphere of the twin. It's critical. NCJ, no, not tonight. I've been kind of shying away from them because of the bad habits last year. Last Tuesday on my scratch league I took a high game pot ($5.00 buy in) for about twenty bucks. Shot 265. Felt pretty good. Before I got stupid, year before last, we had a turkey shoot before Thanksgiving. I won the twenty pound bird by shooting a 765 for the three game set. MOUT training is common enough training that no one around these parts blinks an eye. I'm not about to jump on the ZOMG! Troops training in urban terrain! bandwagon. NCJ, I can see that. Once you start putting a crap ton of money into the side pots, you can really put a lot of pressure on yourself to perform. You start putting all that money into brackets, high game pots, clean game pots you start to tense up. You want to take the money, and not lose. Sometimes it can really take all the fun out of it, especially if you are up against a known good bowler. Sort of like the movie Kingpin without the horrible comb overs.

The suburban high school has had about 10 members of the class die. Hell, I think more people in the inner city high school have been murdered than the suburban high school have died in the 32 years, and Roanoke's murder rate is real low compared to Richmond's of the 80's. For the Vets in the audience, I have been reading an interesting book titled "First Flight", written by an RAF WWII pilot. What is funny is that he describes how polite everyone was before he was sworn in. All correspondence from the RAF folk was signed, "Your Obedient Servant". He was impressed by what cordial and pleasant chaps the RAF were...., then..., he signed on. Turns out the training staff weren't 'cordial' at all.
I was amused. It was the contrast between the recruiter and your boot camp sergeant. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at March 24, 2015 01:58 AM (F2IAQ) 460

Mike H, I'm currently reading a book called "The Fighter Boys". The author is making the point that the RAF from about 1920 on was the least class conscious branch of the British military at the time. After 1935 they were desperate for pilots and trained maintenance crews. I'm about halfway through the book, and he's just now coming up on the Battle of Britain. What is truly a tragedy is that if the Battle of Britain was to happen right now, Germany would have won.

Possibly the most chancy Moron-recognition situation I experienced was our original contact with Gushka, which was at Disneyland.
To begin with, a couple of digressions. The first of which is that I am fascinated by "Disney magic" -- but not the kind that ends up on the screen. You've seen one sappy g-rated manipulative bunch of Jungian archetypes, you've seen 'em all. But Disney is freakin' relentless at separating people from their money and having them dance with joy afterwards, and this is shown in so many very subtle ways. They measure ambiance with food quality in their restaurants and tune them with micrometers to maximize customer satisfaction at minimal cost. To my knowledge, there is no one better at crowd control. Just like making a 3-act play, they raise tension to a mini-climax; raise tension to a mini-climax; then pour it on for the great catharsis in their live entertainment. There are surges of traffic after every show, parade, or fireworks. And one of my "things" is that I like to watch a master at work. So, while others may watch a parade, I'll watch the traffic control. Others may be looking at getting exited through the obligatory gift shop, I'll be looking at fire exits and evacuation routes. Others may be standing in a crowd watching a performance -- I'll be watching how the run crew has preplanned clear routes to make their entrances and exits. I was grinning like an idiot when I saw how the parks at Disney World moved incredible numbers of people at park-closing on buses. Each bus loads from the front six feet of their curbside, so the Disney guys rolled in a bunch of buses and parked them parallel to each other, but offset six feet. Then they had a queue area that forced everyone into single-file, which they turned like a firehose into one bus after another. They moved something like 30,000 people in about 20 minutes. Anywho.....first time we met up with Gushka, we had about 8 clusterfucks going-on from the get-go [yes, I know, they're cheaper by the dozen....] and we ended up near the flagpole in the town square, trying to recognize someone we had never seen.....when a surge came through. It was like being in a swimming lesson and getting swamped by a wave -- you'd shrug it off if you were an experienced swimmer, but it really had me going. So, fun little tale -- the San Diego Zoo had a long-term project where they were going to have a separate park out in the boonies where they could "do it right" -- this is now the Wild Animal Park and is rightfully a treasured institution.
But when they were constructing it, setting-up the enclosures, landscaping the place, making it ready, and establishing animals there......it seemed like the Gulag. Hot, uncomfortable, unsafe, untested....many of the employees there were thinking "why does my boss hate me?" So, they had a morale-boosting exercise. From the earliest plans, there would be a monorail to wind its way through the hidden parts of the exhibits and show the guests new facets of the animals on display -- and management decided to hold a contest among the employees to name this premier attraction -- surely THAT would motivate them! Imagine if YOUR entry were the one selected! And after all the ballots were distributed and collected, a surprisingly-high number of them came back with "WGASA" on them. Evidently, some motivated staffers knew that wgasa meant something good in Swahili.....or maybe someone thought it was cool and convinced his friends and so on and so on......whatevs. So, management declared the monorail to be the "Wgasa Bush Line" and all signage and advertising focused on that. ....despite it being well-known among the kinds of folks who clean animal cages....that WGASA was short for "Who Gives A Shit Anyway". I feel kind of badly about rooting for Israel for "spying" upon our negotiations with the worlds leading supplier of terrorist funding and aid, but only kind of badly. It is a sad day when I feel good that someone is undermining something that we are trying to do. Must be Obama. Must be. doom.

Well, everyone. Somehow I've managed to get sick, and find myself in the hospital receiving the second of 4 units whole blood, which will be followed by three of platelets. The surgeon at this joint, (which is not, as you probably imagine, efficient, or even competent), insists that I'll be sticking around for a week or two, and then me and Mr. Spleen will be parting ways.
I was transferred here, from my local hospital, because this 'big city' hospital is better equipped to piss me the hell off. Also, I think Moochelle got to them, because I asked for something to eat, and was rewarded with a dry turkey wrap, emphasis on dry. My wife and I are already conspiring on how to smuggle some real food into this place. I favor the method by which we tie cheeseburgers to the backs of the hospital's rats, and use them as the key part of our distribution network. Scribble your room number on a fiver, and tie to any convenient rat. Just minutes later....a nice warm McDouble, and only partially gnawed, is yours! Posted by: Sticky Wicket at March 24, 2015 04:53 AM (xVkS/) Yikes! That does not sound pleasant in the least. Have they established a consistent narrative about what went wrong, what damage it's done, what immediate action must be taken, and what successful road leads out of the immediate crisis? And if I don't hear back in time, hopes and prayers that your path will be smoothed. Posted by: cthulhu at March 24, 2015 05:01 AM (T1005) 500
Thanks for the kind words, cthulhu.
No clear anything as of yet. Other than the surgeon swears that at this hospital, spleens check in, and not out. Posted by: Sticky Wicket at March 24, 2015 05:13 AM (xVkS/) 501

Being the #1 spleen-removal surgical center in case of hangnails is not a particularly honorable spot to occupy. Posted by: cthulhu at March 24, 2015 05:27 AM (T1005) 503

Zap Rowdowski, VP of Spleenco, is especially proud you will be donating your spleen to a worthy cause, such as it is, in this time of our greatest need for them. Posted by: Gmac - Driving into the future from the past at March 24, 2015 05:42 AM (4pjhs) 506
Are you sure that shouldn't be "Munchausen Syndrome by Habsburgers"?
Posted by: cthulhu at March 24, 2015 03:43 AM (T1005) ****** What the climate alarmists are doing does bear an eerie resemblance to Munchausen syndrome by proxy, with the Earth in the part of the abused child. Posted by: Habsburgers Syndrome at March 24, 2015 05:57 AM (3F6F8) 507
GMAC,
I will get real food, one way or the other, even if I have to make a few unauthorized field trips. Posted by: Sticky Wicket at March 24, 2015 06:13 AM (xVkS/) 508
