Breaking News : Reuters- Texas Senator Ted Cruz to announce presidential run [Weirddave]

It isn't often that we open bloggers get to break news stories on weekends, but Reuters published a story this morning that it has confirmed that Ted Cruz will announce tomorrow at Liberty University that he's running for the office of President of the United States.

ETA He announced on Twitter at 12:10AM. It's official. He's running.

(Reuters) - Republican Senator Ted Cruz plans to announce on Monday that he will run for president in 2016, the Houston Chronicle reported on its website.

The newspaper, citing senior advisers to the Texas senator who spoke on condition of anonymity, reported that Cruz would launch a presidential bid outright rather than the traditional path of forming an exploratory committee.

He would become the first Republican presidential candidate to announce a run for the 2016 election.

Cruz, a leading conservative who was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012, is slated to make a speech on Monday at Liberty University in Virginia. "You're going to want to be there," a member of Cruz' staff told the Daily Beast web site but declined to reveal the specific nature of the address.

Story here.

I believe at this stage it's only a Reuters report, citing the Houston Chronicle as a source. I haven't seen confirmation from the Cruz camp yet, but Scott Walker was asked about it on Fox and Friends, he responded gracefully with a subtle jab at Jeb (Cruz comments at 6:30):

So, I guess its "Game On" for 2016.

1 Well...

Here we go.

Who's conservative enough to not have any flaws, nor any stumbles between here and the White House?

The real answer is 'nobody,' but that won't stop the Horde (and the entirety of the Right) from devouring itself in a series of one-upmanship that should be recorded for all posterity.

Since the whole thing is going to burn anyhow, I also support the 24/7 entertainment provided by watching the MFM cry and go full retard during a Cruz administration and the potential for him to come out and call them all a bunch of racists for opposing him on shutting down the EPA and such.

65 Police Make Heartbreaking Discovery Next To White Man Gunned Down By Black Teens http://toprightnews.com/?p=8788

A Philadelphia man out for a walk last week was gunned down by three Black teens in cold blood. And when police found the man's body, they made a heartbreaking find right next to it.

According to NBC Philadelphia, the three black teens got "bored" playing basketball and decided to go rob someone. After seeing one man with a large dog, and deciding not to rob him, they then saw 51-year-old James Patrick Stuhlman walking his terrier.

Stuhlman typically walked his dog with his 13-year-old daughter. But on the night of his murder, March 12, he had told her to stay home because it was getting dark out, which very likely saved her life.

As he walked down the street, Stuhlman, who owned a local landscaping company, saw three teens approach him. Then they grabbed and robbed him, and shot him once in the leg. They could have just taken his money and ran at that point. But they did not.

"At one point, he did plead for his life," Captain James Clark said Thursday at a news conference, according to the New York Daily News. "He said, 'Please don't shoot me, please don't shoot me,' and they still shot him one more time."

That second shot took his life.

He's right.

I like Ted Cruz. But he has a 0% chance of winning a general. He's been Palinized past the point of no return. And after he gets trounced in 2016, the GOP will move even further to the left since the conventional wisdom during Hillary's 1st term will be "the GOP has to become more moderate".

Cruzs campaign will be based in his hometown of Houston, where several aides are expected to start working at the end of the month. Among them: senior adviser Brian Phillips, digital strategist Josh Perry and spokespeople Catherine Frazier and Rick Tyler. Cruz also has recruited a number of advisers with national experience, including fundraising consultant Lauren Lofstrom, presidential campaign strategist Jeff Roe and communications guru Jason Miller. Jason Johnson remains Cruzs chief political adviser.

131 I like Cruz, but honestly think he is too "extreme" (i.e. brutally honest and correct) for the average voter.

As much as engaged activists like us appreciate honesty and sneer at flipfloppy compromise, the typical voter out there pretty much feels the opposite.
So while the hardcore on the right are upset over Walker hedging his bets and looking sorta mainstream-y, that actually is a huge plus in his general electability.

And at his core, we of course know he's solidly on our side. He's just testing out the skills to look "centrist" and "responsive" to the general public. I don't hold it against him -- it works over and over for politicians. Clinton flipflopped his way straight into the White House, as did Bush I, as did lots of 'em.

So I say:

Walker/Cruz is the killer-diller ticket.

Walker is the populist reasonable "I'm listening to the avergage American's concerns" face to soothe the LIVs, and Cruz is the maniacal firebrand to please people like me.

We can point to all manner of people with executive experience who turned out to be either failures or disasters. Not just Carter, look at GHWB, GWB. Romney had executive experience and was a miserable failure at almost every aspect of running a campaign. Perry doesn't seem to be doing that well on the national stage, but I'm not opposed to him. The political, corporate, and military worlds are littered with examples of miserable failures of people who had ample amounts of executive experience.

Point is, we need a leader, not an executive manager. SUCCESSFUL executive management is more about intellect and talent than an arbitrary amount of time in a position.

The average voter doesn't give a flying shit about issues. In fact, a platform candidacy is the surest way to lose a national election.

Check out Arthur Brooks' book for the reasons why. In short, the election is an emotional, 'morals' driven drama, not one of facts and figures.

He's a better debater than the others.

He's able to actually articulate positions coherently.

The only thing he does occasionally is he can be a little too schmaltzy.

You know the media is going to go balls to the wall on abortion, rape and "womans" issues so he's going to have to demonstrate his jujitsu 24/7.

I look at it this way Walker should stay in Wisconsin because there are no other Walkers on the horizon.

Christie for all his faults is perfect for NJ as there are no other Christies on the horizon in NJ.

Same goes for Jindal.

Perry had his shot and failed spectacularly and there is the indictment to defend.

And Jeb can go DIAF.

With almost 20 trillion in debt and 100-200 trillion in unfunded liabilities, me thinks the Weimer Republic isnt a very stable place. I havent even touched on our decadent culture.

Most of the cities in the US (baltimore, Atlanta, Chicago, Philly, Indy ect) already look like Mordor. "He dindu nuffin, he wuz going to free community college" seems to be our new national motto.

The only way any of this could be any worse would be if we were Europe. Fleeing would be the only option then.

I'm normally a loyal Republican, warts and all, but if Jeb slips in, I do think that's the first time I will vote 3rd Party at a Presidential level.

Definitely, but they'll keep running. That's the problem.

My hope is whoever runs has a pragmatic head on their shoulders and knows when to fold them. There's no question spite drives a lot of this.

277 "Not electable"... is a ridiculous argument. See Mitt Romney.

Mitt won the primary because he was "most electable" and least likely to scare voters. That the the GOP strategy, that was his strategy, that was the MFM counter strategy (He tied his dog to the roof! Shaved that poor boy's head! Cold War mentality about Russia! Scary! Extremist!)

Mitt lost. Yes, his campaign sucked... because he went out of this way to be non-threatening and was trying to game the numbers with stupid ass consultants and ridiculous systems.

Do you know why Reagan won with a landslide? People voted FOR Reagan. You know why Obama won? Was he non threatening? Was he down the middle? Did he attract Conservatives? No. He won because he motivated people (yes, idiot people... but there are LOTS of idiots). He beat Hillary, who had the nomination locked for a year before it started. He had no experience in anything (and still doesn't).

Electablility doesn't come from being everything to everyone, non threatening, experience, or anything else. It comes from the ability to motivate the people who support you to frenzied levels and walk through fire for you.

Face it. No Democrat is going to vote for anyone to the right of Obama. Most will stay home (just like every Conservative did with Romney). There is no such thing and "Independent" voters and, even if there were, you'd need to spend 100% of your time and money trying to swing 2% in your favor see 2008 and 2012, the exponential increases in spending, the flat turn out... except for the frenzied nut cases who turned out at records levels to vote for Obama).

You win by getting out the majority of people who already support you and get them kicking the shit out of the their friends and neighbors to get them out.

Mitt lost because NO ONE except the friends and family of the GOP cronies that bought him gave a fuck about him.

But yeah... Let's look for someone "electable" that inspires no one again.

290 What's a voter to do? Should I vote for the man who was born in Kenya to a Kenyan father and U.S. Citizen mother for a job that only a natural born citizen can be?

Oh, yeah, that's right, the media and libs went through the roof to explain he was born in America so it was okay.

Wait a sec, now I have to vote for a man who was born in Canada to a non-u.s. citizen father and u.s. citizen mother.

My head is spinning now.

Posted by: doug at March 22, 2015 08:27 PM (IYEs/)

291 that's right, they didn't go through the roof, they got forged birth certificates and the like to prove he was born in America, because they were sunk if they found out he was born in Kenya.

And the GOP, the Constitution loving party? Hah! Born in Canada and they aren't going to fake any birth certificates. No, Cruz, you can't be president.

304 I am going to post this a lot - Ted Cruz is not eligible to be POTUS. A big rule statutory construction in law is that every word means something. If we wanted to say anyone born a U.S. citizen is eligible, then the term would be "born citizen," not "natural born citizen," which must mean something else. Think I am wrong? Doesn't matter - it is a good enough theory to get a Temporary Restraining Order ("TRO") to keep his name off the general ballot on the first Monday of November next year. Yes, if one federal judge in Texas thinks this way, or just wants the Hildabeest, they will issue the TRO. Federal judges in other states will as well, but the Texas TRO is enough to do Cruz in.

Hey, and I like Cruz! I think he should spend the rest of his natural life on the Supreme Court. If we could only do a spine transplant from him to Walker, we would have the ideal candidate. However, he is the one person who is more likely to lose to killary than Bush. Bush would lose by the ballot box, but Cruz would lose by court order.

Posted by: algore at March 22, 2015 10:06 PM (B+ujR)

305 Cruz was Solicitor General of Texas for 5 years, managed a large staff of attorneys, and won some major cases before the Supreme Court, including the Heller case.

I'm not going to say that being Solicitor General is equivalent to running a large state or corporation, but he us a leader,an effective strategist, and knows how to get things done.

Posted by: Michael the Hobbit at March 22, 2015 10:09 PM (0RdKg)

306 The good news with all these candidates, is that it spreads the incoming flak amongst the GOP from the MSM. Hillary OTOH has to absorb everything on her own.

Posted by: Its a Cornucopia of Republicans at March 22, 2015 10:09 PM (x8Wor)

307 Algore you're wrong because the term "Natural Born Citizen" is not defined in the Constitution, and the courts have never ruled on what it actually means. Cruz has the exact same parentage as Barack Obama.

Personally, I wish it had been codified as meaning what I, and likely you, think it means, that would have saved us from Obama. But it hasn't been, and after Obama, that ship has sailed.

310 Cruz is a very smart man. I've seen him speak in person.

He is a genuine conservative; he's also very, very smart. And he's not a wild-eyed radical: I got the sense he considers his tactics and strategy thoroughly.

Walker is a bit less conservative than Cruz, but I agree with Limbaugh that they both have balls. And they're both willing to FIGHT, dammit.

Posted by: Beverly at March 23, 2015 01:21 AM (Q0LYr)

311 Weirdave, you are wrong:

" Algore you're wrong because the term "Natural Born Citizen" is not defined in the Constitution, and the courts have never ruled on what it actually means."

The courts have ruled that in this case, it is up to Congress to define what "Natural Born Citizen" is. And they did. They defined it within 10 years of the constitution's ratification, and that definition held for some time before a new law voided the law that defined it. Since then no Congress has redefined it.

I'm pretty sure that the Supreme Court and they way they work, is that they would clearly rule that "natural born citizen" is defined by Congress and not having done so since the last time, the intent of the framers was clear with the last definition.

Rulings by the court are consistent on the idea that if a word or phrase is not defined within the constitution, then Congress defines it, and they did.
