When I look at Barack Obama I see a guy who is not part of the consensus that has governed Republican and Democratic administrations alike since Harry Truman’s day. You can argue about Carter and how committed he was, but there’s been a basic fundamental belief since the end of World War II that United States leadership in the world produces a far more peaceful, less hostile world and greater prosperity. The U.S. has to play a leadership role. And it’s going to take a lot to rebuild the damage that has been done over the past few years, because we’ve actively conveyed to the world the notion--this president has--that we no longer believe that.When you elect someone who has been anti-American his whole life to be president, America isn't going to do too well.

Of course Cheney like almost everyone focuses just on the top marquee name, and shies away from addressing the obviously much bigger issue: a country (incl. a civic culture and institutions and electorate) that could produce and re-elect such an absurd, disastrous president has much more fundamental problems than just the guy at the top.

Well, only relatively recent history. Before that, they were definitely the submissives. Europe spent a couple centuries fighting their wars in The Germanies, because said Germanies were so fractured they couldn't defend themselves.
So, yeah, once they got themselves together, they didn't exactly have a whole lot of warm fuzzies for their European neighbors.

I agree.
(1) Letting things get out of hand in Europe never ends well. I don't see that changing.
(2) Keeping the security guarantees in the western Pacific reduces the chances of an arms race.
(3) Keeping such stability as possible in the Middle East reduces the chances for other Great Power interventions in an area that still contains a lot of an important resource. Rival Great Power interventions can lead to general wars.
(4) Lots of bad stuff happens in sub-Saharan Africa, but since most of it is local in nature and does not involve strategic resources, geographical points, or Great Power rivalries, they can be safely ignored.
I agree we should think strategically and historically.
