This Will End Poorly: Starbucks Encourages Its Baristas to Rap About Race Relations With Customers

I'd like a half-caf vente and to have my Privilege thoroughly Checked.

CEO Howard Schultz is encouraging his employees to bring up the hot-button issue -- his latest foray into controversial topics.

Starbucks SBUX 0.23% CEO Howard Schultz has never shied away from involving his company in controversial debates, whether those debates are about same-sex marriage, or gun control, or U.S. government gridlock.

But the executive, who oversees a coffee empire with 4,700 U.S. stores, has now taken on arguably the most polarizing political debate in the United States: race relations.

Starbucks published a full page ad in the New York Times on Sunday -- a stark, black, page with a tiny caption "Shall We Overcome?" in the middle, and the words "RaceTogether" with the company logo, on the bottom right. The ad, along with a similar one on Monday in USA Today, is part of an initiative launched this week by the coffee store chain to stimulate conversation and debate about the race in America by getting employees to engage with customers about the perennially hot button subject.

...

In a video addressing Starbucks’ nearly 200,000 workers, 40% of whom are members of a racial minority, Schultz dismissed the notion that race was too hot a topic business-wise for Starbucks to tackle.

...

Schulz will discuss Starbucks' "Race Together" initiative at the company's annual shareholder meeting on Wednesday.

So. There you go.

At Hot Air, a series of real questions about race Schultz should now be peppered with, as should his Ambassadors of Race Relations/Baristas.

I'm so tired of these phony "Conversations of Race" which are either soft-soap afterschool specials -- we're all the same inside -- or are leftwing Social Justice Warrior Check Your Privilege bullshit.

I railed away about this on twitter this morning and I'll sum up my position thusly.

Who the actual fuck does Starbucks thinks it is to determine for me that every single thing in my life will be politicized? No. Seriously. I never agreed to that.

113 What the DOJ now has to do is to acknowledge that the killing of Michael Brown was a justifiable homicide. It must abandon its contrived legalisms and defend Wilson, by condemning unequivocally the entire misguided campaign against him, which resulted in threats against his life and forced his resignation from the police force. Eric Holder owes Wilson an apology for the unnecessary anguish that Wilson has suffered. As the Attorney General for all Americans, he must tell the protestors once and for all that their campaign has been thoroughly misguided from start to finish, and that their continued protests should stop in the interests of civic peace and racial harmony. In light of the past vilification of Wilson, it is not enough for the DOJ to publish the report, and not trumpet its conclusions. It is necessary to put that report front and center in the public debate so that everyone now understands that Wilson behaved properly throughout the entire incident.

... like this would ever happen. Eric Holder is too much of a coward.

Now, I don't drink coffee, full stop. But even if I did, the smell of those places is so overwhelming, it is an assault on the senses. Do you think it is a good idea to go courting the chance of offending someone when you already overcharge for a product that can be had elsewhere for 20-25% of the cost without the social justice warriors? Honestly, the liberal left is about to kick itself in the family fruit. The first chain store of any type that attempts to open a discussion with me on race as I'm making a purchase is going to find themselves shortly and swiftly rebuked and then...restocking the merchandise I leave behind. One chique's opinion

- Starbucks specialty coffee drinks, while pretentiously named and overpriced, are nice. The also have decent pastries and baked goods to get on the go.

Because, for 12+ years they've been "educated" that the United States' treatment of blacks was the worst thing in history. Including the Holocaust.

So, they have to avenge.

Only problem is: All the big racism problems have been solved.

And we're now stuck with this penny-ante shit of lectures and raising awareness.

You want a real conversation on race?

How about a hidden camera documentary of interviews with American blacks where they discuss the actual events of racism in their lives. The times they know they were treated differently than whites. And not the bullshit of hearing about someone else--their own experience.

Then show it to a bunch of ESL Chinese and ask them if they can spot the racism.

When that comes out--which it never will--we can talk about racism.

366 I think this is perfect. I contend there is no plan that will heal race relations in America without causing white people either discomfort or anger, probably both. Millennials aren't any less likely to be racist than older people, if the stats I've been reading are accurate, but they sure hate to talk about racism, and that's a great way to plaster over pernicious stereotypes rather than confronting and overcoming them.
And as for the white hands holding the cups? I doubt it's an accident. Race relations aren't going to be improved by minorities talking about the reality of discrimination and bias: they already know. It's the white folks who tell themselves they're not racist, but just can't explain why they thought Joseph's job application was more compelling than Jamal's. Those are the ones who need to do some soul-searching.

Heh, and for round 2:

"That fair-trade cup of coffee we savour may not only fail to ease the lot of poor farmers, it may actually help to impoverish them, according to a study out recently from Germany's University of Hohenheim.
...
The fair-trade business is filled with contradictions.

For starters, it discriminates against the very poorest of the world's coffee farmers, most of whom are African, by requiring them to pay high certification fees. These fees - one of the factors that the German study cites as contributing to the farmers' impoverishment - are especially perverse, given that the majority of Third World farmers are not only too poor to pay the certification fees, they're also too poor to pay for the fertilizers and the pesticides that would disqualify coffee as certified organic."

I have white friends who lived in a majority black neighbourhood for most of their adult lives, and the wife had mostly black friends as a result. She's also been a troop mother (or whatever it's called) to young black cub scouts for YEARS.

B: for a cup of black coffee?
A: for a grande, yes, why are you so hostile?
B: I'm not hostile, I'm just a new customer
A: is it because I'm a black female?
B: um
A: is it because you're an affluent white male who thinks everyone should just bow to the man?
B: go on

B: no, do you have a problem with my order?

491 It's the 3rd most common food/drink restaurant in America. McDs is #1, Subway #2, Starbucks #3.

Really? Second look at a Subway franchise. Last I checked it was 1/6 the cost of a McDs franchise.

It also takes about a year to build up a clientele, unlike McDs, which earns money about as fast as you can open one.

500 I'll take a venti cafe au lait and the answer to "why is a group whiter than MSNBC's staff meeting lecturing me about race?"

Seriously, an absurdly high number of baristas tend to be incredibly white women. Them lecturing people on race will probably open themselves up to an employment discrimination suit as to why Puerto Rican trannies are underrepresented in their numbers.

I was a sheltered kid who didn't get exposed to all this race tension until later. Right after reading Where the Red Fern Grows a southern kid joined our school class. Being a huge dork I asked him if he'd ever gone on a 'Coon hunt.

He was shocked and appalled that I would ask him if he'd ever hunted black people. I was asking about Raccoons.

I realize that lots of folks here love hating on Starbucks but I do like their bitter coffee (I prefer IPA as well when drinking beer). Also, all the Starbucks I have been at in Texas have the sign that says unlicensed carry of firearms is subject to 10 years and $10,000 fine. That is the sign that means it is OK with the owners if you are carrying a concealed handgun if you have a license. The 10 years and $10,000 fine applies everywhere for unlicensed concealed carry. Starbucks discourages open carry in states where that is legal but as of now, open carry is illegal in Texas. In any event, I am not inclined towards open carry because despite my name, I prefer not to act like an asshole when it is not necessary.

505 Starbucks must be rolling in the dough in this shitty economy to be able to take an action that could possibly result in the loss of 25% of their customer base. Forever. And I doubt they want to hold up the line by starting pointless conversations with customers.

512 I hope conservatives realize two things:

1. The majority of Starbucks employees won't want to have anything to do with this self-righteous crapola.

2. Those Starbucks employees who do are not genuinely interested in "having a conversation" about race. Rather, they are race-baiters and SJW wannabes looking for free publicity by trying to provoke an incident (and get fawning sympathy from the MSM/DNC axis).

Posted by: Banned by KBTX at March 17, 2015 02:38 PM (mM6iZ)

513 Brew your own coffee, put it in a thermos and carry it with. Saves money, time and you don't need to recycle the cups. Plus, if you are into that sort of thing, you can buy beans from fair trade sites, and support indigenous farmers directly. Then there is no icky confrontation, or set up to make the SJW's feel all tingly because they stood up to the man (or in my case, the woman.)

Them: "Conversation about race?"
Me: "Have you declared your personal salvation through Jesus Christ?"
Them: "I don't want to talk about that." (Not a lot of born-agains or Witnesses in Starbucks)
Me: "I don't want to talk about race relations, so that makes us even."

I usually get along with SB folks just fine, and don't mind striking up a conversation, but I do have my limits.

522 I rarely ever visit Starbucks, but I will be making a point to do so very soon. I will relish having this "conversation" while I order and taking 15 minutes or more while the line piles up behind me.
