Putin Reappears After 11 Days of Being Missing; Says He Considered Putting Nuclear Forces on Alert Over Crimea Matter

Where was he for 11 days? He's not saying. But he jokes that life wouldn't be as interesting without gossip.

Independent Russian TV channel Dozhd reported that one possible cause of his absence may be that he had the flu and sealed himself off at his residence in the Novgorod region. Meanwhile, Kurier, an Austrian newspaper, said he is being treated in Moscow by an Austrian orthopedist for back problems. The Kremlin has not commented.

"Discussing the President's health is the same thing as aiding the enemy," said Alexei Makarkin, vice president of the Moscow-based Center for Political Technologies. Makarkin said such secrecy was one legacy of the former Soviet Union.

Meanwhile, over the weekend, Putin appeared on state TV and revealed that he considered putting the Soviet Empire's (yes) nuclear forces on alert during his invasion of the Crimea, I guess to war off any possible Western intervention.

The Soviet Empire also has put its North Sea fleet on alert, but this could just the typical crap they do when NATO conducts exercises.

s the U.S. and several Eastern European NATO countries conduct a series of military exercises near Russia's border, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his Northern Fleet "to full alert in a snap combat readiness exercise" in the Arctic, state-run media reported Monday.

At least one Russian leader described the drill as routine and unrelated to the "international situation."

The fleet got its orders at 8 a.m. Monday, according to Sputnik, launching a land, sea and air drill that will involve 38,000 troops, 41 ships, 15 submarines and 110 aircraft, according to Sputnik.

Hey remember when we had the End of History and Bill Clinton gave us the "peace dividend"

that was awesome

17 We foolishly thought we "won" the Cold War.

All that happened was that the communist-sympathizers in the West stopped looking to the Soviet Union as their official sponsor, and instead took hold of the Marxist reins themselves.

The end result was an even more extreme version of communism even more deeply embedded and widespread throughout our institutions.

The "end" of the Cold War was actually just Gramscian communism replacing Leninist communism.

Turns out Gramscian is more insidious, and worse.

52 Ace;
We really need to discuss, honestly - the fact that the Left has gone beyond the Line this time and has endangered the nation in ways that are unprecedented. We also need to discuss if these days are the symptoms of things that can change, or are our sides forever incompatible and foreign to each other.

I think the far Left is incompatible with liberty and with our Constitutional Republic and must be excised in some fashion. Others I am sure will say they are not an existential threat. I would be interested in your perspectives on this.

But in a nutshell, this monster's death threats are the fault of the Left which has no problem with Soviets Reborn. And in my book, that makes them seditionists at best.

The United States is in the final stages of secret, closed-door negotiations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a massive trade agreement with 11 other countries.

Who will benefit from it? One provision hidden in the fine print - "Investor-State Dispute Settlement" - may sound harmless, but don't let that fool you: ISDS could let foreign companies challenge US laws without ever stepping in an American court.

That would undermine US sovereignty and tilt the playing field even further in favor of multinational corporations.

Sign my petition and spread the word: ISDS is a bad deal for America.

I know you're terribly worried about that poor Ukrainian girl you saw crossing the bridge clutching a bag of Doritos, but that was "Wag the Dog", not real life.

Eastern Ukraine is the industrial, Russian speaking, pro-Russian side of the country that won the free and open elections (verified by everyone). The U.S. vowed to protect that government, then stood by while pro-EU thugs took over the capital.

Eastern Ukrainians like their capitalist system and free elections. Western Ukrainian socialists would love to get a big piece of the Eastern wealth by virtue of ...because.

And that is exactly what the Ukrainians should have expected so they should never have given up their nuclear weapons in return for US guarantees of protection.

The good news is that no country is ever going to give up nuclear weapons again in return for American promises. In fact, countries that could have nuclear weapons but did not produce them because of US guarantees have probably already manufactured all the components so that they can assemble them on short notice since all American promises are now seen to have the "unless Democrats are in power" loophole.

For a bunch of people who claim to value diplomacy over military action, Democrats seem to do a lot to make diplomacy irrelevant and military action inevitable.

My uncle used to travel on business as did his wife sometimes and when they went to the same destination they took separate flights so that if there was a plane crash and a parent died one person would be left to take care of the kids. Part of this may be the thinking with the Obama because if they both fly together d something happens they'd have to be taken care by Michelle's mom. I was 'ego surfing' recently. Found a municipality in Germany with my last name. I had been told my ancestors were from the Alsace-Lorraine area which was roughly German, then French, then German, then it became tedious and I lost interest. But the town with my last name was way over in Bavaria.

But that would involve playing "the long game" - which is something Democrats only do vis-a-vie domestic policy and Republicans are evidently too stupid to even contemplate.

Also perhaps a tad unrealistic in that Vlad's asking price for his cooperation may have been rather too high - something like, say, Eastern Europe.

313 Maybe there's a silver lining in the whole Russian overwhelming response thing. If Putin wants to send a message of "overwhelming Mother Russia might and power" each time NATO conducts military exercises however large or small or anywhere near the Soviet Union, I mean Russia; then I say, great!
Seriously, let's arrange multiple small-scale exercises in disparate regions. Putin will respond with his multiple forces and entail the ensuing costs both financial and political. Make him play this game for 4 years and see what that does to 1) overall military readiness, 2) military morale, 3) costs associated with these maneuvers, and 4) political will.
Every so often really crank one up while Russia is deploying massive forces say in the Arctic Circle (as now) Pop up a huge show of force in the Mediterranean, Black Sea, North Pacific or Western Europe. With a country that large and a basic infrastructure so weak and oil revenues down, you cannot sustain this for long.
Worse case scenario is he comes wanting to discuss "terms".

I guess this principle explains why, when they were attending the Betty Ford funeral, Mooch and Shrillary both flew out of Andrews AFB on the same morning, into Palm Springs Municipal the same afternoon, and back to Andrews the same evening, aboard separate jets.

Oh, no, wait, it doesn't explain it at all. Becuase Mooch and Shrillary don't have kids together. What does explain it is that these are incredibly arrogant chancers intent on living like faux royalty on the public dime, as much as they can get away with, which turns out to be a whole lot.

There's a fair amount of common interest in opposing nutcase global jihadism, but after that it gets "complicated".

I actually find Putin somewhat disappointing and passive. Were I him, I'd have a major Pacific strategy under way. Return the islands to Japan and conclude a vague security agreement - not overtly provocative but unmistakable in it's anti-Chinese character. Ditto something with India.

Enact a $5.00 a barrel oil import tax and use any money collected to rebuild the US military. Remove any impediments to converting existing vehicles to run on compressed natural gas. For my domestic agenda: Fire everybody at the IRS who can be connected to the

423 Oh, guess the "client meetings" got in the way before I could correct him, but moo moo got another one wrong. Saddam's military was not a direct threat to the US, obviously, but prior to being beaten down and then sanctioned it was very much a threat to our interests.

Um, hellow, Kuwait? Most reckless, pure case of state-to-state aggression since you-know-who (a very precise and accurate comparison).

And the continuing menace of Saddam's Iraq was the combo of active hostility to the US and its allies and interests, a trillion $$ in the ground, very competent military science/engineering capacity, and a history of suicidally reckless aggression and long involvement with any terror outfit of note (incl. AQ). After 9/11, this was an intolerable threat, and by its nature not "containable".

3-4 weeks. I have a group you need to be involved with. Authors, editors, publishers, readers and radio show hosts. All ways to get your book out there and noticed. There are 3.8 million books on Amazon, think about it. It's a facebook group called the Conservative Libertarian Fiction Alliance. The goal is to help change the culture through conservative based literature. Lots of tools and information to save you money and time. Larry Correia, (Monster Hunter Series) Sarah hoyt, Liberty Island publishing, lots of people you can learn from. This book business is some filthy shit. 506 @487 I do wish Russia wold become a normal country. We have much in common. But Russia has refused to be normal for centuries and probably won't change.
---------------------

Two major problems, I suspect.

First, Russia had a lot of trouble liberalizing its society. While the rest of Europe was moving toward more equality among the classes, Russia was dealing with two extremes. The nobility was dragging its feet. And whenever a Tsar decided to overrule the nobility and push things along, some idiot group of students would decide that he wasn't moving fast enough, and blow him up. Then his replacement would get nervous, decide that the reason why his predecessor had died was because society was becoming too liberal, and clamp down again.

This sort of mentality still seems to exist. On both ends of society.

Second, Russia keeps getting invaded by outsiders who trash the place and kill lots and lots of people. The Mongols. Napoleon. The Nazis. Russians are somewhat paranoid of outside nations as a result, and now try to arrange things so that fighting takes place in neighboring countries instead of within Russia proper.

-------------------

Iran's got a bit more of something going on. Sure, Putin assassinated a guy in Great Britain. But the guy was a Russian critic of Putin's government. And when the old Soviet Union got involved in South America, it was part of the country's Cold War struggle with the Free World.

There was no random terror stuff, along the lines of the Iranians blowing up the Jewish center in Argentina.

The basic point still stands, though. There's a certain amount of sense that these people were all individuals who Putin had personal problems with (i.e. they were critics of his government).

Blowing up the Jewish center in Buenos Aires was a random bit of terrorism that didn't particularly help Iran, or anyone in the Iranian government. Tehran didn't get anything out of it other than the "satisfaction" of killing a bunch of Jews.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at March 16, 2015 06:27 PM (DXzRD)

581 Russia is a tough one to get a handle on psychologically.

For the past several hundred years they have been under the thumb of rulers who had more power than any western king ever had. While western powers were transferring power from kings to representative bodies, they kept concentrating more and more power at the top. The soviet era did little to change this, it just changed the name of the group at the top.

Combine this with what the soviet era did to people psychologically, and trying to understand them becomes even more difficult.

I remember having several class discussions in college about this. Several of the students asked questions of why the people put up with the gulags and NKVD squads and so forth. My prof said something along the lines of "You live in a country where freedom has been the norm, not the exception for over 200 years. You live in a place of strength for the individual." Her pointed out that the soviet people were used to a dictator at the top who held the power of life and death, and while the soviets made things even worse, relatively speaking, the constant shifting of power as various groups fell out of favor meant that people could actually rise to higher positions.

He pointed out that during Stalin's reign, when the people were sleeping in their apartments and they were awoken to heavy footfalls outside the door, they immediately thought of the NKVD and the first thought was hope that they would stop at someone else's door, and not at their own.

His basic point is that the soviet people have been brutalized so often and for so long, that what they most desire is stability and safety.

Soviet Communism was one of the worst crimes ever perpetrated by the hand of fallen man and it's first victim was it's own people.

---------------------

Yeah, I think that's the overt, obvious one (albeit apparently not obvious enough, given that the ENTIRE FREAKING STATE DEPARTMENT got caught off guard when the Ukraine stuff started). Point 1 is the more subtle, internal stuff. It's that habit of the Russians of managing to sabotage themselves whenever things start to look up. It's possible that 70+ years of Communism managed to do something about it. But I'm not getting my hopes up yet.
