TIME: HILLARY CLINTON SIMPLY SEARCHED HER EMAILS FOR SEARCH TERMS UNDER SUBPOENA; DECIDED ALL OTHER EMAILS NOT CONTAINING THESE TERMS WERE "PRIVATE," THEN DELETED THEM FOREVER

From @comradearthur and @xbradtc. I did not understand what these words meant at first.

Think about this.

This is enormous, and incandescently illegal.

NO ONE READ HILLARY EMAILS BEFORE DESTRUCTION

How did Hillary Clinton know that the tens of thousands of emails from her time in office she ordered destroyed were personal? Did she or even her staff scroll through her sent items scanning emails about "yoga routines" or "family vacations" before deleting them? Nope. No one looked at them. The Clinton campaign said those emails that did not crop up in a keyword search performed by her team were automatically deleted. No eyes. No one to be subpoenaed. Just highlight all and press delete. That method seems better for missing emails than to finding them. And it would sound reckless and haphazard coming from another politician. In this case, though it sounds like a woman covering her tracks in preparation for a long and bloody legal fight over subpoenas to come.

See ya - Time: "For more than a year after she left office in 2013, she did not transfer work-related email from her private account to the State Department. She commissioned a review of the 62,320 messages in her account only after the department–spurred by the congressional investigation–asked her to do so. And this review did not involve opening and reading each email; instead, Clinton’s lawyers created a list of names and keywords related to her work and searched for those. Slightly more than half the total cache–31,830 emails–did not contain any of the search terms, according to Clinton’s staff, so they were deemed to be 'private, personal records.'"

And this is almost small potatoes compared to that, but it's also huge: Hillary's emails were never actually secured or encrypted, despite reports to the contrary (that they were encrypted "after three months.")

In fact, only "accessing the server" was encrypted; if I'm reading this right, the actual traffic was never encrypted.

Via @theh2:

And that's because she chose to hide her emails from the American Public while exposing them to the Russians, Iranians, and Al Qaeda.

It Gets Better: State now says that Hillary Clinton did not use a government-issued secure (encrypted) Blackberry.

She insisted, it seems, on using a private one, under her own control, and loosey-goosey security protocols.

Wonderful.

99 I have managed E-mail systems in part of my exceptionally boring career as an IT guy.

I typed in the URL for clintonemail.com and I saw their login page, which is a straight-up, out-of-the-box, vanilla install of MS Exchange 2010. It's about what I would expect for a company with about 30-50 employees that paid a consultant $2k to spend a week setting up E-mail for them.

Frankly, it terrified me. Anybody on Planet Earth who could guess or crack a password would be in like Flynn. And this assumes there were no unpatched vulnerabilities on the server, etc.

I would not be surprised if a private citizen who had some experience doing penetration testing could break the server wide open very quickly. Actual foreign intelligence agencies?

If they don't have everything that was ever on that server it's because they weren't trying.

Where's her -109?

I know I average about 20 private emails a day, and I'll take a wild guess that someone like Ace probably sends and receives a few more than 22 private emails a day. Point is, we apparently have the same e-mail habits as one of the most powerful and most well-known women in the world. That makes zero sense to me. Also, she appears to have processed about 22 WORK RELATED emails a day, which seems mighty low for a SOS. The next big 'news' to come out of this ridiculous story will be the revelation that - surprise - there were more than 60,000 emails on the server.

258 In fact, only "accessing the server" was encrypted; if I'm reading this right, the actual traffic was never encrypted.

It sounds like the connection between the server and HRC's email client/browser was encrypted, so the data in transit in that regard was secure.

But, there's no guarantee that inbound/outbound e-mails being delivered from/to OTHER servers was secure. By default, THAT traffic is unencrypted. So, if the e-mails being bounced between her and other servers on the Internet were not encrypted, then that's a pretty serious security breach.

I also would like to add that just being unclassified does NOT imply that it should go over the wire unencrypted. Also, actual classified information should NEVER go over the Internet at large--encrypted or not--but, rather, over networks approved for that purpose (e.g., SIPRNet, JWICS).

This situation is horrible all around.

Possible rabbit hole

Diplomad (* Former State Dept employee ):

"When I worked at the State Department I had a personal email account with AOL and two official ones with State. I was issued an official Blackberry for when I was traveling. That Blackberry was hooked up to my unclassified State.gov email account. I also had a special log-in procedure that would get me onto that State.gov account from any internet-linked desktop or laptop computer in the world. No problem. We had very clear instructions on what was to go on our State.gov account and what we could put on our personal email account. The unclassified system at State had internet access; I could, therefore, access my private AOL account via the internet using the State computer. As noted, I could, using the special log-in procedure, gain access to my State.gov account from any internet-linked computer device in the world. The Blackberry was not authorized for use on the classified State account or for sending classified material of any sort."

Okay, now let's go out and ask the average man on the street about this story. And after that, let's interview students in a few institutions of higher learing about what they think. I'm sure all their answers will surprise (NOT) us.

Because then it could be seized. Its on government property.

I so wish she's held to true account. but our media overlords won't let it happen.

383 it's all about the foundation. i think she jumped at sec. of state as an opportunity to promote the clinton brand; speechifying, shmoozing and shaking down private and state donors to her primary work, the
"foundation".

i figured she traveled so much to avoid d.c. and being too closely associated with obama for her future political ambitions. no. consistent with whitewater, cattle futures, the rent-a-white house money grubbing, she was going for the dough.

keeping the sleazy communications on her personal server would allow her to prevent scrutiny by state dept., congress, archives or historians. she was planning on passing "delete" when she started the whole thing.

just thoroughly corrupt.

393 @384 - her whole thing was that it was better to do nothing (which she did) than to be caught doing something that might reflect badly on her.

Her term at SecState was largely spent hiding under the desk.

The whole email thing was an effort to make sure she had no record.

She just wanted the title, and none of the responsibility.

Then Benghazi.

407 The real questions... where are the backup tapes? Who was her IT manager for keeping that system running? You can't tell me he did not perform daily back ups with off site storage rotation. No way. Who ever it was would not allow that that system he was responsible for to crash with out being able to restore it in six hours. nope.

Next question not asked... Did Bill send, receive and have an email account on that private server? You know... her husband. The one that was flying around with a pedophile. Those emails weren't deleted just to save her... it was also to save him and the whole "Clinton Dynasty."

I suspect there is a lot more to those emails than just frank talk about Benghazi, foreign leaders and donated money. They can walk through those hot coals... but worse stuff? Stuff that makes even die hard liberals go "Ewwww" is more than likely in there.

Imagine how frank you could be with a private email server under your personal control... how much rope do you think people like them could accumulate thinking "no one will ever see this"... more than enough to bring them down, probably enough to bring down an administration and most high ranking dems and probably a few Rino's too. Yup... there is a potential for some real "Ewwww" stuff in there. There needs to be a reward offered for those back up tapes. Their out there.
