Here Are Some News Things Open Thread

So, Marvin Gaye's kids won their infringement case against Pharrell and Robin Thicke for "Blurred Lines," even though they shouldn't have. (Thicke and Pharrell are right: You can't copyright a type of song.)

Now they're looking to sue Pharrell over his song "Happy."

Here's the thing: Major talents like Gaye are going to be imitated. If you didn't want to be merely imitated, you shouldn't have gone into a fame-making art.

We cannot have a copyright system that punishes people for imitating the feel and basic gist of works of art, because everyone imitates the feel and gist of prior works of art. There will be consequences for this sort of silly jury verdict.

Greece is threatening Germany: We'll sic our immigrants on you.

John King: Hillary's news conference is exactly what you can expect from a Clinton presidency, forever and ever and ever.

You know what a Hillary Clinton presidency would be like? Imagine the rubberized foot of a walker stomping on a human face, forever.

Lisa Meyers: Public doesn't trust news media because they've plainly taken sides, and is no longer interested in holding (some) governments accountable.

Ross Douthat discusses what few others in the establishment media will: Obama is turning the presidency into a caudillo.

That part is on him.

The part where we are letting this happen without even an insistence of a debate about it?

That's on us.

Even that doesn't bother me as much as making all changes retroactive and automatic.

They're changing the terms of the original contract between the public and creator with no compensation to the public.

Nor does every copyrighted work have a wealthy estate to keep it around. The changes benefit the Disneycorps while losing lesser works to posterity.

60 This was not copying a "type" of song. When someone is sued for copyright infringement of a song, there has to be a match between the two pieces for a certain number of beats with melody and chords. The Thicke song may have done this, but without sitting and looking at it note for note, chord for chord and comparing it to Marvin's I couldn't say definitively. Thicke's piece of reductive crap certainly copies the whole groove and feel of Marvin's masterful opus. The bottom line is this: when you aren't a real musician or song writer with a real background in music theory, yeah, you are going to be a hack. The music today is largely written by people who know nothing about writing songs that also can't play an instrument like a pro. Marvin was a pro. The guy came out of the whole Motown factory, and he certainly knew what he was doing. Thicke and this Pharrel guy are exceedingly average talents that have nothing original to offer the world of music. They are not worthy of any tears or pity. They both make gobs of money being mediocre talents. Elsworth Toohey would be so proud.

Because when I watch old Westerns, the dollar amounts they toss around for a few things seem really high. For instance, the pots in a poker game.

US and Great Britain in the War of Independence, I should think. Also the American Civil War, at least before the Confederacy started printing their own.

As far as a non-rebellion/non-civil war situation, I would think not, one of the tenants of being a nation is to have your own currency. That is why the weird EU is weird.

Two countries having a common currency means that at least one of the countries doesn't have a currency of its own.

146 Btw, since my reply on whether John Wick is worth a rental was willowed in the previous thread.

Yes. Very Much so. I meant to say it is not a movie in the current talky, bullcrap sense. The main character does not spend the entire movie talking about his feelings. He does not rage against the existential pain of loss... Well, he does, in that he shoots a lot of Russian mobsters in the face.

It is a very stripped down movie with a very simple plot and structure. It is well done enough that it kind of points and laughs at a lot of current action movies that try to be so much more complex.

This should go without saying, but it is not for kiddies or those who dislike blood and violence. Still a very good movie.

For starters, they could throw Greece out of the EU and NATO, then start grabbing Greek assets like airliners at German airports. The French would, of course, follow suit and probably raise the stakes by grabbing Greek ships at sea. Meanwhile, every other country in Europe could decide to round up all their unwelcome Muslims, Gypsies and even home grown undesirables and dump them over the border in Greece. 205 Patent protection is for 20 years. I understand Disney money is the answer but what, if anything, is the justification used to claim longer protection for copyright than patents?

I would personally like to see a law setting patent and copyright protection to an equal period. There are plenty of monied interests that push to keep patent protection to a shorter period. It would be in keeping with the spirit of the Constitution to pit those interests against the interests that keep copyright protection so absurdly long.

So it's a good idea to be aware of what they're up to. They've got a very long reach. And they're constantly working to extend it.
