OMG: YA Author Explains Why He Has Few Female Characters In His Books, Says the Most Sexist Thing Possible

I don't know who this guy is, but apparently his Progressive Papers are in good order; here's the headline of the Vice interview with him:

The Failure of Male Societies: Author Andrew Smith Tackles Monsters and Sex

So you know he thinks boys are icky, too.

So what could he have possibly have done to have drawn the (itchy trigger finger) wrath of our (always reasonable, and dulcet as May rain) online feminist piranhas, so much so that he quit Twitter rather than put up with it any further?

Well, believe me, it was just terrible.

Prepare yourself: This is the statement that provoked the feminists into yet another Shame-Rage Cyclone.

Seriously, sit down. This is tough stuff.

Q: On the flip side, it sometimes seems like there isn’t much of a way into your books for female readers. Where are all the women in your work?

A: I was raised in a family with four boys, and I absolutely did not know anything about girls at all. I have a daughter now; she's 17. When she was born, that was the first girl I ever had in my life. I consider myself completely ignorant to all things woman and female. I’m trying to be better though.

Now what you're probably thinking is "That asshole ace, he copied and pasted the wrong quote; that quote is obviously not offensive."

Wrong.

Now, here's the rotten thing. Here's the stupid thing. (Stupidity and rottenness and close cousins.)

Having attacked the shit out of this guy for no reason, and having driven him out of the public square, feminists are now themselves being attacked for being so militantly, insanely, nastily doctrinaire about lunacies.

And so they are now getting their measure of Internet hectoring.

And they don't like that one bit.

I saw one person try to claim that feminists didn't hector and bully Smith by tweeting, "Shall we revisit the difference between criticism and bullying?"

And yet she herself is now complaining of the "bullying" that Smith's "critics" are now facing.

So yes dear-heart, let us revisit the difference in your stupid Hate-Robot mind between "criticism" and "bullying:" "Criticism" is what you do to others, but "bullying" is what others do to you.

Is that pretty much it, Princess?

Sorry Ladies, if you want to be taken seriously as thinkers, it's time you started showing the chops of a serious thinker. And this constant "One rule for me because I'm special and another rule for you because you Suck and you're Boy!!!" nonsense is not adult thinking.

It is the thinking of a spoiled, rotten stupid child.

Do you really think that you are the only ones permitted this ugly, nasty third-grade-girls game of choose the Butt and circle around him and spit venom and humiliation at him?

Why? When you are constantly spitting accusations, hatred, and venom at the world, why do you imagine it's somehow out-of-bounds for another group of poisonous children to circle around you and make you the object of their collective coordinated Group Shaming?

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

If you're gonna be a Twitter Gladiator Thug, you don't get to cry and say "But I'm a girl!!!" when someone hits you back.

The Pushback... was not exactly vicious, though this guy used the word "bully," and I assume this is what caused the Special Snowflake so much psychic tumult.

26 I'll say something really sexist.

It's hard to write interesting female YA characters. I mean, it's hard to write YA characters in general since their personalities are so...underdeveloped, but it's even harder to write good female characters.

You basically fall into the "badass strong girl" trope or the "innocent sweet girl" trope.

Why? Because 16 year old girls are really...

Boring.

Ok, there I said it. Coming as a former 16 year old girl, the interests and desires of the average 16 year old doesn't make for very interesting reading. Sorry. It's true.

My 16 y/o female protagonist is by far the hardest character I've ever written, and I'm pretty sure that should I ever actually finish this little project and anyone actually reads it, I'll get torn to shreds about making her so neurotic, but that's also the truth about 16 year old girls.

They're boringly neurotic.

Come at me, feminists.

27
The criticism reminds me of an article written shortly after John Hughes' death, taking him to task for not having many Persons of Color in his movies. What happened to write what you know? Faulkner wrote about Oxford Mississippi because that's what he knew. If this guy says he doesn't know enough about women to write about them, that's fine; his books should then stand or fall on their literary merit or lack of same.

41 Here's the thing. I read a ton of YA. A ton of it. And here's the thing. If there's a YA novel with a male protagonist, it is nearly certain I will buy it, no matter how awful it looks, simply due to the fact that there are so few YA novels with male protagonists that I want to do what I can to show there's a market for that.

So this is really about how dare anyone even think about writing something that's gasp not female centric!

Anyway, when feminists are regularly the victims of Swatting, losing their jobs because of privately told jokes at a convention, or losing their jobs because of political donations then we can at least start to talk.

And perhaps for the last two of those three we should try to "help them achieve equality"

You know why feminists hate, hate, hate, hate, hate Twilight? Because Stephenie Meyer had the nerve to write an actual 17 year old girl. Because, yeah, when you are that age and you are that stupid, you do think it's romantic that the guy is creeping on you and watching you sleep.

You do fall to complete and utter pieces when he dumps you.

How dare she write that! How dare she!

I'm reading a YA series right now with a 14 yo male protagonist where Our Hero is swinging wildly between being confident and capable and mature and being an immature brat who can't deal with anything. I can't decide if this is bad writing to have the character react as needed in that scene or excellent writing that captures the huge mood swings of being 14.

A lot of
The Alex Crow is really about the failure of male societies.
In all of the story threads, there are examples of male-dominated
societies that make critical errors, whether it's the army that Ariel
falls in with at the beginning, or the refugee camp, or Camp
Merrie-Seymour for boys, or the doomed arctic expedition, they're all
examples of male societies that think that they're doing some kind of
noble mission, and they're failing miserably.

86 Feminists need to learn that 1) men are not all terrible trolls what should have rocks thrown at them, and 2) it is impossible to go through life without having a sad.

Princess Bride said it best: "Who said life is fair? Where is that written?" And society indulges them, sadly, in stead of scoffing at it as the nonsense it rightfully is.

any distinguishing traits, someone will claim you've done a stereotype.
***
It is a flavor of political terror.

If you have well defined rules implemented impartially then people can feel safe as long as they stay within them even if the rules are...bizarre.

If you have vague rules and randomly use them to destroy individuals, you send a message to the larger group that the only way to be safe is to be at the vanguard of the enforcers - to be the craziest motherf*cker in the group.

You can see the same idea advanced in Stalinist Russia. The tools at the left's disposal are much more limited...for now...of course. But the strategy is the same.

127 From the outside, it appears that much of the Left has no sense of persepctive - minor or even non-offenses draw massive condemnation and hysteria. Sometimes this looks like simple hypocrisy, and sometimes it is.

But 18-1 nails it, it's a control mechanism - you can't control the conversation or a society by reasoned argument if your arguments are even controversial, not to mention the shambles they often are.

But, if you can get away with going completely apeshit over trivialities, you *end* the conversation, and you occupy the space where the conversation used to be. We've all been taught or learned to avoid crazy, because crazy is limitlessly dangerous, and some folks have figured out how to use that to their advantage.

There are too many factors behind why that works to even go into, but we've got too far into that mess to "fix" it in a meaningful way. To what extent we can, we're in the "identify and try to understand" phase in hopes that we develop coping techniques, otherwise something on the order of "Stalinworld" does seem to be in the offing. A society of paranoia, rage and destroyed lives.

In other words, our little vacation from human history is at risk. Because, frankly, most of that sucked pretty badly for the average person.

Legit question for the Horde:

I have a story I've plotted out, researched, and begun outlining. It has historical elements and has characters that are native americans, and blacks and slaves. Would love to bang out a first draft of it this year. Honestly, there are only three things keeping me from going at it like gangbusters:

1) Real life getting in the way of writing
2) my own insecurities that I cannot do the story I want to tell justice and if I research just a leetle bit more, it will finally be perfect
3) That due to the SJW faction in fiction, I will get hounded and Salem Trialed for daring to write about minorities when I am a cisgendered whitey white. Also for painting certain historical figures in our nation's past as noble when modern history is all about painting them as out of touch racists.

1 and 2 I need to tackle on my own. 3, is the one that bothers me the most, because it is totally out of my hands how it will be perceived. I know I should not care and just write like the wind, but it keeps being a concern in the back of my mind. Reading Correia's battle against the SJW gives me courage though. And if 3 is a big enough issue that I can't find a publisher, I guess I could always self publish.

174 "Big part of the reason kids don't read on their own today: the books they're force-fed are garbage."

I noted on one of the weekend book threads that the younger male members of my extended family all appear to have been permanently turned off to the idea of reading for pleasure.

Because the educrat apparat-chicks who run the schools and decide upon curricula and reading lists decided to force those boys to read a bunch of boring introspective femlit that wasn't at all to their tastes.

It's almost as though there's a deliberate agenda being implemented by the left to educationally and socially hobble boys by insisting that they behave and think like girls, and then punishing them for their failure to do so. But of course that's paranoid conspiracy talk.

Thanks, Lauren, but I have the sickening feeling of too little, too late.

There's a window where children and especially boy children can be lit up by the idea of reading for fun, and if that happens, the habit usually sticks for life.

Unfortunately, while that window was open, a bunch of chick lit of absolutely no interest to those boys was shoveled through it. And they were told to read it and be prepared to be tested on it, or else.

So now the window is shut. Welded shut.

It's still salvageable. You just need the right sort of thing to pique their interest. I'm not saying it would be easy. But pulling it off would be worth the effort.

Unfortunately, you'd probably need some outside additional inducement at this point. But once you can get them pointed in the right general direction, and give them a nudge to read the first book or two, they might very well continue on their own without any further need for intervention.

--------------------------

I read a few, but got dissatisfied with them pretty quickly. Also, there are a *lot* of them.

-------------------------

Black Cauldron books, aka the Prydain Chronicles, was one of my faves at that time I think. And the protagonist is, gasp, a boy!

-------------------------

These are classics, but sometimes hard to find. When I got the complete set for my nephew, I had to wait several months for them to come back in print. Parts of them will no doubt be disturbing for some special snowflakes (seriously - there's some creepy stuff in there; it's the good kind of creepy, as opposed to the morally bankrupt author kind of creepy), but nothing that teenage boys shouldn't be able to handle. It's based off of Welsh mythological elements (which explains some of the unpronounceable names...). If parts of it weren't creepy, then something would be wrong. Disney made a move based very loosely off of elements of the first and second book. It sucks.

As LizLem notes, the protagonist is male. There's also a strong female character, though she's completely absent from one of the books (for reasons of plot). The rest of the cast is quite memorable as well.

---------------------------

I also liked Jack London books. Though I guess London would be critiqued today as needing to check his specie privilege, for daring to write from the perspective of a dog?
----------------------------

For more modern stuff, I'd recommend Brandon Sanderson's two recent YA series. 'The Rithmatist' was inspired by real-time strategy video-games, and contains a steampunk world with chalk magic, and a US that's composed of lots of islands threatened by 2D chalk monsters. Oh, and Korea conquers Europe.

Steelheart is a dark book that's set in a dystopian world that has supervillains, but no superheroes. The titular character is essentially an analog for Superman gone bad. And the protagonist is trying to figure out Steelheart's weakness in order to get revenge for the murder of the protagonist's father. Given all the attention that superheroes have been getting lately, it's possible that this might get some attention.

it's hard not to root for more insaner-than-thou insanity on Twitter to pummel people like him back to reality. They can worship at the PC altar all they want, but it will Never. Be. Enough. 256 The YA author said his daughter was the first "girl" in his life, not the first "woman". He grew up in a house full of testosterone and his mother's feminine ways were probably not on his radar as a kid. Give him a break. What he says makes perfect sense to me.

258 I grew up with no dad and no brothers, and I always felt that boys came from some other planet. I totally relate to the author and I wish the knee-jerk feminists would stop making us reasonable women look bad.

260 "If you're gonna be a Twitter Gladiator Thug, you don't get to cry and say "But I'm a girl!!!" when someone hits you back."

As a society, we're generally inclined to allow people some benefit of the doubt when they use a "victim" status as a sword or as a shield. But the line has to be drown when it is used for both.

I have a daughter now; she's 17. When she was born, that was the first girl I ever had in my life.

Wow, that's impressive. He gave birth to a daughter by himself. But that's unlikely, so another woman was involved. Surely she was in his life for more than the 5 minutes it took him to, umm, plant his seeds.

263 Late to the party as always, but....

Yeah, no shit bitches be cray cray. The one who wrote the insipid Storify tweets thinks she's a vampire. Like Otherkin, but edgier.
