People Are Terrible, An Ongoing Series

Good morning, all. I thought I'd take it upon myself to pass along the truly revolting story to ruin your day. I tried to get it up earlier, but life got in the way. So, apologies if your morning was mostly pleasurable.

A number of years ago, Disney Parks instituted a policy that catered to handicapped (both mentally and physically) children and their families. It was a voluntary policy that sought to make it easier on families that had children with disabilities by allowing them to skip ahead of long lines, among other perks. Lord knows is tough enough trudging around with your own able-bodied family in a hot and sweaty theme park for 8 hours without incident.

I've been to Disney's parks a fair amount and can recall seeing this practice maybe a handful of times. Most park-goers recognized it for what it was, which was simply a nice and thoughtful gesture for families that almost certainly have a more difficult daily routine than you do.

You probably know where this is going.

In 2013, Disney discovered this policy was being badly abused in the most soul-crushing and miserable way possible: rich parents, mostly from New York City, were honest-to-God hiring disabled children to drag around the theme parks, all to skip attraction lines.

The comments by some of these people are almost comically evil.

The “black-market Disney guides” run $130 an hour, or $1,040 for an eight-hour day.

“My daughter waited one minute to get on ‘It’s a Small World’ — the other kids had to wait 2 1/2 hours,” crowed one mom, who hired a disabled guide through Dream Tours Florida.

“You can’t go to Disney without a tour concierge,’’ she sniffed. “This is how the 1 percent does Disney.
The woman said she hired a Dream Tours guide to escort her, her husband and their 1-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter through the park in a motorized scooter with a “handicapped” sign on it. The group was sent straight to an auxiliary entrance at the front of each attraction.

Nice, right?

Finding it difficult to confirm which family actually had disabled children and which were abusing the system, Disney ultimately decided to discontinue the program. Again, the voluntary program.

Naturally, this brought on a lawsuit.

The new Disney program was a “blanket accommodation that did not take into account the nuances between various disabilities,” according to the commission findings, dated Feb. 13.

In 2013, Disney ended its previous program, the Guest Assistance Card, because the older program was abused by wealthy people who hired guests with disabilities to take them to the front of a line. The new program, called Disability Access Service, no longer allowed disabled people to skip waiting, but it allowed them to make a reservation in advance and avoid standing in line until that time.

An attorney for the families, Andy Dogali of Tampa, says he filed complaints on behalf of 27 families with the Florida commission. The commission ruled on five of those complaints recently, finding in favor of the families.

The moral of the story, of course, is people are awful and don't ever do anything nice for anyone, ever. I think that was the basic plot of Bambi, actually.

26 ha. i've know about this for 20 years or so. when i lived in SoCal and i could lean out my office window to see the Matterhorn, i had a Disney "Passport". park for free, take the tram to the train to New Orleans Square for lunch, then back on the train/tram to the car and back to work. once a week.

but when my girlfriend and i went to the park for holiday, we always rented a wheelchair and took turns pushing the other around (OK, she DID have a bumb knee), and hoping right to the start of all the lines.

that's a bit short of "hiring" some disabled kid.

but not much.

27 *runs tin cup along gray box bars*

I'm fascinated that a Florida commission dared to rule against Disney.

As best I can parse, the complaint is that the accommodation isn't sufficient because kids will have to meet a set schedule. Frankly, I do not know enough about the various disabilities to know if that is a crap claim or not.

I do know that no good deed goes unpunished. I'm also curious as to the interplay between this and the ADA. *koff DD koff*

I don't get that handicapped parking permit crap. Many if not most of the people who park in those spaces could use some walking, as they're grossly obese. Now they're obesity could result from being in fact handicapped, or as I all too often suspect, obesity IS their handicap, and their use of handicapped parking is symptomatic of the cause: laziness.

Several years ago I broke my ankle, and had to have a plate put in to reassemble the pieces. While recovering, I continued to park in regular spaces and make my way around on crutches, often hobbling past obese people parking in handicapped spaces before waddling in. I always wondered what, if anything, they thought about that. I looked at it as a way to get a bit of a shoulder workout.

I watched surveillance footage of an able bodied woman chest bump a 70 year old woman and knock her to the ground because the old lady pulled in a handicap spot before the young thug could get there. Turns out the tags and the car didn't even belong to the subhuman. I'm usually pretty lenient with people in a handicap spot. You can't tell just by looking if someone is handicapped. For instance, a friend of mine gets the stinkeye all the time for using her tags. You can't tell she has a prosthetic foot when she's wearing jeans.

Much easier than trying to argue with some entitled, angry parent.

I guess they have been tryign to reign that in, hence the lawsuit. Reminds me of the South Park episode where Cartman gets the scooter becuase he's fat and thus unabled. He bullies his way to the front of the line for Jungle Crusise only to find about 50 other fat people in scotters ahead of him.

130 Apologies in advance to those who have kids, family members or who themselves have "invisible" disabilities such as autism. My frustration isn't with those people, it's those who say "oh my kid has a disability" when your kid is just a spoiled brat.

How the hell is Disney supposed to know who is lying or not about being disabled due to autism? Oh we need this pass because my kid is autistic and will have a meltdown if we have to meet a schedule. What's the level of proof? Doctor's note? Because anyone can and will say that to try to jump the line. What's Disney supposed to do, demand proof? And then what, does Disney call up the doctor to confirm? Because anyone with 2 minutes and a laser printer could print up that letter.

Also what's the line between a kid being a kid and freaking out and a meltdown due to disability?

If I sound very suspicious, it's because I've watched kids with actual disabilities being pushed to the side while kids whose parents are gaming the system to get them extra time on tests use up all the resources. That's infuriating to me.

I know I can never expect a politician on Earth to actually go after this, but I'd really like to see them wrangle it in. It should be MUCH harder to get one of those plates and they also need to stop having so spaces taken.

The gym I went to had all sorts of people with handicapped plates. Think about that, these weren't paraplegics or anything like that, they had handicapped plates and were working out at a gym. Apparently just walking an extra 50 feet was too burdensome but they can got to a gym and work out.

149 There's some conflation going on.

Disney always had a "tour guide" service in place for guests staying in the Disney properties. These people took groups of 8 or less through the parks, using the special entrances to bypass lines, special areas roped off for parades, special seating at theme restaurants and shows, "casting" in shows, etc.

This was totally separate from handicapped access.

I've used this a number of times. The guide makes it clear up front that access is dependent on a number of factors, but it is primarily if your group can keep it discrete while you're using the access doors.

Sure, there are some people who "rented" a handicapped kid, but they are the ones trying to avoid the Disney fees.

Apparently even something like "anxiety" can qualify you for a placard. You just have to find a doc who will sign a paper saying your "disability" makes it difficult for you to "perform every day tasks" (the definition of which is left wide open, of course)

Yeah, ashamed to admit it, but I found this to be hilarious. I have to a sneaking admiration for the cleverness of it.

And I don't think this sort of institutionalized courtesy is necessarily a good thing. These kids need to learn that that they can't expect these entitlements as a right. Sometimes life is difficult. And if they are waiting in line at Disney, it's not like there's some emergency necessitating this.

And this could serve as a metaphor for regulatory capture. Some well meaning libtards pass some law designed to redistribute wealth, ie. steal, but of course they aren't as smart as those they are trying to plunder, and the law ends up backfiring, subverted by the wealthy to increase their wealth, leaving said libtards shaking their heads and wondering what went wrong.

They need to just audit a small amount of these and doctors would start getting very nervous about playing this game if you took a few licenses away for fraud.

The gym I went to in Milwaukee had special pool hours for people in wheelchairs, the one I should be at more now has special classes for people with Parkinsons, I've seen people with leg braces working out their upper bodies... Also, disabled parents occasionally want to watch their kids take classes or compete.

I'm not sure why they need to justify that to you, or why you can't join a less inclusive gym.

If you need wheelchair assistance, for example, you are put ahead of everyone else, you can even travel through "other" areas of the airport to reach your gate, go to private bathrooms, assisted, and you are processed swiftly through the security section (avoiding the detectors).

And yes, you read that right. he broke his right leg. So for the duration of his "disability" he couldn't even drive anyways, so there was never any kind of reason for him to get a placard.

But he was so stoked when he got to leave for class at the last minute and get VIP parking while the rest of us schlubs were circling around the parking lot like hawks looking for people leaving so we could grab their space.

My parents have a handicapped sticker for their vehicle because my father has Parkinson's. He is not in a wheelchair (yet) and he can walk without a cane, though slowly and with difficulty and he really really shouldn't. He's finally caving on the cane since he fell the other day in a parking lot and couldn't get up. Thankfully, someone finally heard him yelling and helped him up and he didn't break anything unlike last year when he tripped on a curb and shattered a kneecap and had to have surgery and was in the hospital for a few weeks.

They go to the gym five times a week for my father to do his PT in a desperate attempt to stave off the day when my father can no longer walk at all.

But, hey, thanks for pointing out that it's just too much for my dad to walk those extra 50 feet. I appreciate it.

I forget the system they have, but it's open to everyone and you can basically make a reservation Fast Pass and then come back and only wait like 10 minutes in line. The problem is not every ride has it, but you can still fill your day pretty easily.

The last time I had been to Disneyland, Reagan was President. I didn't know what to expect, I will say my daughter had probably the best time in her life.

You and your kids will have more fun in a stress-free environment in one day doing Disney this way than in a week doing it like a tourist. And if it's 90 degrees with 90 percent humidity, it's the only option.

I remember the kids being dressed as Arab traders in the Indiana Jones show and then strolling into the Brown Derby for lunch without so much as a reservation. Good times.

It's a shame some communists are insisting that all guests are treated the same, regardless of how much they're willing to spend.

Hopefully, capitalism will prevail.

I guess if I also rail about all the people that apply for SS disability, it will also offend you because your dad really is disabled?

The people I see at the gym aren't in physical therapy, they can easily make it across a parking lot, and if they can't do that, then they shouldn't be jumping on treadmills.

245 Regarding the Barron's study guide issue on the sidebar. I have not yet heard whether the study guide accurately reflects the test questions for which it was written. Do the tests provided by ETS contain questions in which the "right" answers paint Clarence Thomas as a reactionary? If so, then the anger at Barrons is misdirected, because all they are doing is attempting to prep test candidates to get a good score, even if the test they will challenge is flawed.

Does anyone here have recent experience with ETS tests? Are they biased or badly constructed?

Pool owners, especially small community or neighborhood pools were faced with the need to install a $15-25,000 lift apparatus and provide additional training for lifeguards and provide trained people to operate the lift.
To accommodate the odd paralyzed person who wanted to be dunked in the pool.

I'd rather not, but I do so on special occasions for my kid. However, knowing how my son sometimes wants "1 more trip to X Land" after a day of it I've planned these trips carefully: 2 full-day passes during the vacation, riding every ride as many times as possible so that he is completely done with the whole place by the time we board the plane for home.

It's A LOT to take in at the time - such as the riding Transformers ride 3X in a row (ride 'till ya puke, kiddo!) - but it's saved us the whole..."I want to go back to Lego Land because X ride was so much fun!" One overkill trip and you're done.

313 St. Augustine.

I was just getting warmed up.

I can see going to Teh Rat Palace once if you have kids. But after that, fuck'em.

I went there one night to a bar and couldn't get waited on. When I finally went to the bar because I finally figured out that I couldn't get waited on, I ordered four drinks.

I was told they don't allow that. Needless to say, I had some rather strong words for the bar manager and left immediately (to go to the liquor store then home, where I can drink as much as I please less inexpensively and sans hassles).

I reapeat: Disney sux donkey ballz.

It's not even like Disney got rid of it entirely. They modified it to avoid abuse.

They're still accommodating.

This reminds me of Chipotle being sued because people in wheelchairs couldn't see over the counter. Chipotle would bring ingredients to your table and make your burrito there, but that wasn't good enough because it was *exactly the same.*

What the ever loving fuck? They're being punished for trying.

316 So I guess from your anecdote I should assume every person who has a handicapped pass totally deserves one.

I guess if I also rail about all the people that apply for SS disability, it will also offend you because your dad really is disabled?

The people I see at the gym aren't in physical therapy, they can easily make it across a parking lot, and if they can't do that, then they shouldn't be jumping on treadmills.

All I'm asking is for doctors to be audited and real standards be in place to weed out the entitled.
Posted by: McAdams at March 10, 2015 12:57 PM (zVoy6)

My father goes on the treadmill per his doctor's instructions. According to your, oh, I'm feeling generous, logic, if my father uses the treadmill then he can easily make it across the parking lot. Also, a corollary to your proposition is that if my father can use the treadmill at all, then he should not have a handicap sticker for his car because he is not actually disabled. How interesting.

You are the one who made blanket statements. You are the one who didn't bother noting that what bothers you is the abuse of the system. You are the one who appears to be unable to comprehend the possibility that maybe, just maybe, just possibly, at least some of those people with the handicap stickers who are working out at the gym can simultaneously have some level of disability and still be working out to prevent further erosion of their condition.

Are there those who abuse the system? Yup. Is that wrong and should it be weeded out? Absolutely.

But are there those who fall into the Venn of both meeting the criteria for being actually handicapped, to whatever degree, and still going to the gym? Of. Course.

Also I never said my father was disabled or on SSD now, did I? How very fascinating indeed that you felt compelled to toss that in there.

I think there's a committed core at the dedicated moral end. And a committed core at the dedicated immoral end. And the vast, vast majority are somewhere in the middle. The middle tends to be the "don't rock the boat" types. They'll take shortcuts when they can. But they won't push the limits of public tolerance for their actions.

Or in other words, they don't feel any great need to be moral. But their actions can be influenced by their perceptions of the general community standards. "Everybody does it" is an open invitation to these kinds of people.

333 A South African utility company has been given an ultimatum to reduce it's number of white employees by 44.3% over the next five years. This means 3,389 whites have to go. It is part of the Federal "Black Empowerment" program.

For years, Eskom has been under orders to only hire non-whites as new employees. The firm says it is having major problems finding enough qualified non-white applicants. Currently, Eskom's middle managers are 30% white and it's skilled labor force is 21% white.

The South African government has also ordered Eskom to reduce it's safety requirements to make it easier for non-white applicants to qualify for jobs.

Eskom is ordered to reduce the number of white engineers by 1,081, and the number of white skilled laborers by 2,179.

South Africa is currently experiencing a rapid collapse of it's electrical infrastructure and power routinely goes out all over the country.

356 I'll share my little story about Handicapped placards.

My FIL has one. He always parks in the handicapped space. At first glance he appears to be a man in his early to mid 50s, very healthy looking, with a slight limp.

In reality, he was in a horrific car accident a little over 20 years ago that damn near killed him. Should have killed him. He was essentially crushed from the waist down. He has no feeling at all below his right knee due to nerves being severed when the gas pedal went through his foot and up into his leg. He's had two hip replacements on the right side.

Yeah, that extra 100ft of walking makes a big difference for him.

Here's the fun part of the story. About 5 years or so after the accident, he pulls through McD's for food for everyone. They screw up the order so he pulls around and parks in the handicap spot to go inside. He gets out and starts to walk in. Some guy walking by makes a snarky comment about him parking there.

My FIL goes off. It culminates in my FIL, in the McD's parking lot, dropping his pants to his ankles and screaming "You wanna see my fucking handicap? How bout this? Does this fucking cut it?" while showing him the backs of his legs, hips and lower back. Which are covered in massive scars.

Meanwhile my teenage wife is in the car ducking, "Oh god dad. I know people around here!"

That was terrible. Such horror stories from large urban centers are not uncommon. If not too far, you could go to an office in a smaller town. In smaller offices, areas of less than 100,000, a 15-minute wait would be too long. OTOH, SSA has been closing the smallest offices to drive people to use teleservice. However, should you go to a smaller office and a jerk insist you are out of your servicing office jurisdiction, you can insist on being served in the smaller office. They cannot refuse you service.

I have a philosophical problem. I'm a (constitutive) scientist, and therefore look first and foremost at the data.

If you go 0 for 4 in a baseball game, you can (maybe) blame it on the umpire, or the lighting, or something, and people will give you a skip.

But if you go 0 for 100, the coach puts his arm around your shoulder and says, "Son, face it: you can't hit."

Of course, in the case of RSA and Zimbabwe, to extend the metaphor, the bruthas didn't have to hit. They pinch ran for someone who already got a hit, and they've been picked off.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at March 10, 2015 01:21 PM (oKE6c)

383 Yeah, South Africa is determined to ethnically cleanse itself of white ppl.

An ultra-wealthy white elite might be able to afford the security to stay. It's the white middle class -- the people who aren't the sons and daughters of the old rulers -- who really are getting fucked. Literally as the South African rape rate is one of the highest in the world and is used as a weapon against whites to ethnically cleanse them.

South African whites should just move. It's not gonna get any better from here on out. Take what you can and get the hell out before they kill you and your family. The world is definitely not gonna intervene to protect whites in South Africa -- just as the world watched as Zimbabwe killed, and raped, and purged their white population.

Hey, everyone. My FIL is in a similar situation. Old guys are proud. They don't want you to tell them what they can and can't do.

But for a lot of people with medical issues, walking across a walmart parking lot is a huge strain on them. Could they physically make it? yeah, but they'll be in pain for the next 4 hours.

But it would be nice of all of us young folk with no physical issues to let them park closer to the store. Only a minor inconvenience to our day, could be a huge one for them. Just a common courtesy type thing.

Also, doctors tell them to work out on treadmills. Low impact, theres something to grab if they fall, and it's a "use it or lose it" type thing. If they don't do moderate exercise on the treadmill, they may end up in a wheelchair very quickly as their muscles atrophy. So they pop advil, push through the pain, and walk half a mile on a treadmill once or twice a week.

Jeez.

Before you get ravaged...

No. It's exactly what he needs to be doing. Because the disease is attacking (among other things) his ability to walk, he needs to exercise the necessary muscles and nerves in the safest way possible.

Given Parkinson's, that does *not* include a track, a walking trail, or a wading pool. A treadmill is much safer- especially when you put the emergency stop cord on properly.

Much better that he fall on a treadmill which will automatically stop, while near care.

412 I recently went to Disney with my wife and autistic son. He's almost 18 (physically, emotionally he's more like 8-9) and this was his 4th visit to one of the various Disney parks. On none of those trips did we ever avail ourselves of a "Golden Ticket" (as they were called) in spite of our friends with similarly disabled children thinking we were crazy for not doing so.

See my son, though he is no-doubt autistic and developmentally disabled (almost entire non-verbal, for starters) is - get this - willing to wait for things that he wants. During this trip we waited in a line for a new ride for over 75-minutes and routinely wait in lines of 40+ minutes without incident. Now, there are reasons why we go to these parks in February (and, in the past, October) - principal being the weather (we melt in Orlando summer heat) but the other is that, go figure, the lines are shorter.

When I first read about this scam a few years back my first reaction was to drive down to Planet Manhattan, find one of these self-absorbed POS rich-bitch families and beat them all to within an inch of their lives. Seriously. It was only fear of what would happen to me in prison that kept me from doing it. Now? Well, like the title of this piece says, People Are Awful.

Easy answer: don't go. If enough people don't go, the parks will start losing money, and might identify the problem, and find a way to correct it. How about booking all the rides online before you come? And if you are a no-show, your place goes to a standby customer.

Have a friend who moved himself and his family here from a small country in the southern portion of Africa(not SA proper). White, dutch, native born in Africa.
He left when apartheid was banned and blacks became intent on revenge and retribution. Just driving to work became extremely dangerous when gangs of black youths would jump on top of his vehicle. Lots of other events that led to him leaving for here(where he is now a full citizen, works , is productive).

Africa is hell bent on returning to the "dark continent". It's not because it's black population is incapable, but rather it's the desire to return to tribalism. There are so few black leaders there willing to combat that movement.

Plus, Sig Ep pledges, not exactly Lance Corporal material. Unless someone in authority neatly navy-bars their student records, they can't get into the military now anyway. Wonder what their academic majors were going to be.

Just saying, the option was out there. There hasn't been free speech promoted on college campuses for a couple of decades.
Try to hand out a bible or write a paper on conservatism and see what happens. Try to present the opposite opinion that transgendered students regarding their living arrangements or which bathroom they should use and see how fast you get placed into a thought retraining class and your record "marked".

The vast majority of colleges are full on indoctrination centers. Free speech and thought are considered enemies of the state and of the progressive movement and will be dealt with harshly.

513 OH, the hoi polloi are doing it too.

Take and watch some handicapped parking for a while, specially in busy/large stores like Walmart and such.

You'll see lots of placards for the cars in the handicap spots but watch for a while and see who comes out to these cars or who is driving them when they arrive.

9 times out of 10 the drive AND occupants will be abled. At worst they might have an elderly person with them but not one who's disabled.

What these folks do is they have a relative who IS old/disabled and they get the placard supposedly so they can ferry them around. Thing is by law unless there is someone disabled in the vehicle placard or not, they are not allowed to park in the handicapped spots.

But the cops don't see them, they're too busy, even if they hand out any tickets.

It's a scam and it's been a lawyer honeypot and scam from the beginning.

My physical therapist is from South Africa-his Jewish father and mother escaped from Poland during the '40's, created a life and business there, and then left for Canada and then the US. People were being burned out of their homes after the fall of apartheid, and no help for them.

And yes, surviving a broken neck and back means I have difficulty walking, even into the gym. I'm under the care of a physical therapist, and exercise on my own, for the very reasons AtC mentioned. I don't merit a handicapped placard, and that's okay. But I don't resent those who need them from using them, whether they "appear" handicapped or not. NYC rich mothers however, need a boot up their ass. And so does McAdams.

Yes. You see, in Islam, borders are verboten and jihad is a requirement.

HOWEVER, you can do short-term treaties to rebuild (which can last up to 10 years) as long as you dont take more than a year off from jihad on other fronts.

So as long as they keep funding Hezballah, they're good to take a 10 year break from jihad against america if and only if there is a strategic reason for the hiatus.

The thinking is that after 10 years of not jihadin', the jihadists will lose their heart for jihad.

566 And the ADA is a perfect example of the corruption of conservatives.

Anyone here who expresses conservative views and yet can't see the corrosive effect that government mandated handicapped parking and accommodations should stop and take a long look at what they're approving.

Not saying the handicapped don't deserve some concern and assistance. Not saying they are somehow sponging off others.

However the way the law is crafted and the willingness of others to cheat has made the law a sticking point for many people. Plus the expense forced on places that will never recoup that expense by visits from the handicapped. If they recoup any.

Like someone said above, explain to me the usefulness of handicap parking in a lot solely for the use of an exercise gym? (no not one that does rehab)

Or other places that you will rarely see anyone handicapped using yet they are mandated to have a certain amount of parking and access ramps and such.

One of the bigger dumps the Bushes took on the country.

most people that can do physical exercise should be looked at skeptically as to them having a handicapped parking pass.

it's sort of like someone getting a workman's comp claim but they catch them water skiing. maybe there's a great reason for that like the water helps their injuries, but there better be a damn good excuse and i get tired of the people that scream bloody murder at the slightest hint of skepticism
