Report: Brian Williams Blocked Stories Critical of Obama on the Grounds That They Were "Divisive"

I mention that because Brian Williams seemed to have the exact same policies about negative stories about Obama that Saturday Night Live did, a show he had occasionally appeared on. And of course SNL and left-wing comedians in genera are not interested in criticizing Obama; they too find it "divisive." Williams seems to have had the same conception for news that a very partisan comedy show did.
The Nightly News crisis exposed deep-rooted anger among many NBC journalists, who felt frustrated that Williams had been allowed to gain so much power. In recent years, the anchor had churned through executive producers who challenged him. Others complained about Williams’s unwillingness to go after hard-hitting stories. Multiple sources told me that former NBC investigative reporters Michael Isikoff and Lisa Myers battled with Williams over stories. In February 2013, Isikoff failed to interest Williams in a piece about a confidential Justice Department memo that justified killing American citizens with drones. He instead broke the story on Rachel Maddow. That October, Myers couldn’t get Williams to air a segment about how the White House knew as far back as 2010 that some people would lose their insurance policies under Obamacare. Frustrated, Myers posted the article on NBC's website, where it immediately went viral. Williams relented and ran it the next night. "He didn’t want to put stories on the air that would be divisive," a senior NBC journalist told me. According to a source, Myers wrote a series of scathing memos to then–NBC senior vice-president Antoine Sanfuentes documenting how Williams suppressed her stories. Myers and Isikoff eventually left the network (and both declined to comment).

Not just one joke, but 4 or 5, with the last one being the "comedian" saying something like, "This just in, Ben Carson's presidential run is over. They have a knack for toeing the line on this stuff, from sending their Reporters of Color to cover any story about Oppressed Minority People to filling their human interest story time with features about kiddies and institutions that Look Like America.

I understand your anger, but US citizens are supposed to have magic protection from being killed by the US government without due process, and the President's signature on an order does not constitute due process. The setup above presupposes the result of a judicial proceeding, namely, that the people are in arms against the US, and are in a criminal operation. You and I think so, but it hasn't been established judicially, and the accused has not had a chance to rebut the assertions. Re the "outside the US" aspect, consider the precedent the drone strikes set: suppose Rush Limbaugh crosses into Mexico. OK for Obama to smoke him with a drone? He signs the order, and classifies him as a terrorist. (I'm choosing a silly and extreme example to make a point.)
Besides, the Constitution does not limit American citizens rights vis a vis the US government to their being inside the US. So in principle Obama could smoke Rush Limbaugh inside the US, which legally (I believe) would be no different than doing so overseas.
So much as I applaud these particular a-holes getting smoked, I do not support use of drones on American citizens, regardless of where they are. This is the ONE case where the criminal justice model SHOULD be applied, not for foreign terrorists on foreign soil, where the drumhead court martial and execution are to be lauded.

I disagree. The moment you have temporally divorced the act of punishment (the drone strike) from the damaging act (joining AQ), it becomes a law enforcement question.
Soldiers aren't assassins, and shouldn't be.
US Citizens *are* conveyed special protections by the Constitution- whether you like it or not. And the Constitution says that I'm not to subject to a capital sentence without due process. I'm so sorry if that makes things more difficult for you.
On the actual battlefield? Sorry, them's the breaks. A drone strike after we've positively identified your *specific* presence (absent due process)? The Constitution says "no."
Or, as others pointed out, what happens when a political dissident like, say, Rush, leaves the country. Because the President (Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces) believes he's "an enemy of the United States" does he get to call for a drone strike? Why not?

Carrying a military weapon is attractive as a criterion, but think about it: what would you do if you were running a terrorist cell that had an American captive? Make him carry a military weapon, of course.
Re revoking citizenship, that too should be a judicial proceeding, for the same reasons cited above (not least being the determination of fighting for the enemy, a question of fact for a jury to determine).
I think we need to adhere to the Constitution even when doing so is awkward and inconvenient, as opposed to allowing the President to make determinations ex officio, because from a case we'd support his doing that it's easy to imagine progressively grayer circumstances until arriving at a case where we wouldn't support it.

It's the "in arms against the US, outside the country" (and therefore outside law enforcement's jurisdiction) part that's relevant here, not "specifically targeted".
If you're in arms against the country, outside the country and the reach of normal law enforcement, you're a proper target of intel and military activities, period. "Due process" has absolutely no place. It would be insane to confer special rights on citizens outside our jurisdiction actively in arms against us. Just insane enough that it won't be done, even as all sorts of insanity (and actual shredding of actual remnants of actual constitutional principles) rages on within our borders.

There is no due process requirement, because no one would even know he was there until it was all over- or be able to track him if they did. Engaging in a battle with someone takes "due process" off the table for as long as that battle lasts.

I've seen that argument about Obama's drone strikes - they shouldn't have been in the car with/standing by that terrorist if they didn't want to be killed. And in some context, it makes sense - such as if they're all hanging in the same bunker hatching a plan to commit a terrorist act (as opposed to at an open-air market).
The point is that Obama's drone strikes are killing bystanders, intentionally sometimes (according to the NYT article about this). We have few details on the program, and unknown oversight (how many, who approves, reviews these kills other than Obama?). If it's justified, then so be it, but not knowing seems to indicate it may not be. And after 8 looooong years of progressives whining about casualties/collateral damage, torture, Gitmo, generally "we're better than this!" it makes Obama's actions even more surprising.

And I would turn your point around: nothing in the Constitution limits Constitutional protections to US citizens (unlike alien residents) when they are inside the country. I see the Constitution as a contract controlling the interaction of the US government with US citizens, without an geographical restrictions.
To your proviso, whether a US citizen has taken up arms against the country is a question of fact for a jury to decide, not the President. In essence you're accusing the putative malefactor of treason, and yet the criteria for convicting someone of treason are uniquely specified by the Constitution (the only crime so specified, IIRC). Does the President now get to make that determination? Under what circumstances would we ever prosecute someone for treason, if the President can short-circuit the process with a stroke of the pen?

However, practical issues do come to light. The only other *constitutional* option is simply to let them go until such time as they are killed in otherwise legitimate military action.
If you are correct that the US Military *should not* be used to make arrests for treason (though that begs the question: who should? There is no police power granted to the Federal Government in the Constitution, either), that does not change the fact that the US Government specifically targeting a US Citizen absent due process is *also* unconstitutional.

That was sort of Rand Paul's point with his drone filibuster - which ones are OK, and in which countries is it OK up to and including the US. I think the reason we've heard so little about Obama's drone program is that, like everything else he does, he doesn't want to define it so that it can't be criticized or deemed illegal. To me, that's the troubling part: we don't know the guidelines, the limits.

Yeah. The "innocent bystanders" thing seems like a red-herring to me.
*IF* the other considerations are all checked off (that is: due process has been followed), then I have no problem with a drone strike taking out a US Citizen terrorist in a foreign country. In that case, I see "innocent bystanders" the same as I do in the case of a raid-type arrest: everyone near the subject is in danger, just because of the situation. We don't have to like it, and we shouldn't celebrate it (well- unless the "innocent bystanders" were all members of AQ in good standing), but neither should we let it stop us.

3. He posed an imminent threat to the United states, which has the right of self defense. They have a very broad view of imminent, however there is proof of this guys involvement in everything from 911 to Ft Hood to the underwear bomber
4. Because of the lack of cooperation of the Yemeni government there was no lessor step that could be taken
So the argument seems to be his membership in al Qaeda plus being an imminent threat trumps his citizenship
That is the governments argument. You can pull that apart but please let's stick with the facts as they are. He was traveling with al Qaeda. He was Al Qaeda. His son was not the target and had the appearance of a grown man. He knew he was a target. He is responsible in part for nearly every attack that took place in the United states

Well, my left arm is in a cast right now, so I'm not wearing my watch. But if I want to know what time it is, I have to pull my cellphone out of my pocket and flip it open. Not even as convenient as a pocket watch. As soon as the cast comes off, the watch goes back on.
It's just plain effing weird to walk around, and see all these people with their faces buried in a goddam smartphone. No situational awareness at all.

Sure, but my point is that the allegations against him were just that: allegations, none of which had been proven in a court of law. Practical difficulties in apprehending him notwithstanding, as an American citizen he should have had his day in court before being specifically targeted.
Which is not to say he didn't have it coming (he almost certainly did); it's just that I don't want the President to make that determination.

We can't try him in absentia. Unconstitutional. We can't drone him. I guess we could open another front and go to war with Yemen to get him. Most likely we do nothing while we endure more of his attacks
