Your Hill To Die On - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]

We kick off the official season for bullshit polling reports with the first official Dead Horse Poll: Hill to Die On Edition.

A couple of weeks ago, Y-Not put up a fun post which asked you to build your own FrankenPOTUS. It was an interesting read with everyone from the founding fathers to John Wayne making an appearance as those possessing the must-have qualities for leader of the free world.

In lieu of an actual FrankenPOTUS, let's consider the those issues on which you absolutely will not compromise. What is your hill to die on? Let's establish, first, those issue on which you will not budge. Later we'll look at it from a different angle and ask about those issues on which you are willing to compromise.

Note that a number of the issues are broken down into pro and con positions to allow for the diversity of readers here at the HQ.

Happy voting!

this is exactly why I expanded the poll from answers as vague as "Gun Control" because it could be the hill to die on from both perspectives.

If they can't trust me with a gun, I can't trust them to run a government that is ultimately enforced through guns.

32 Hard to choose just three since there are so many interconnected issues. It all boils down to sovereignty to me -- both national (strong military and immigration reform) and personal (2nd Amendment and tax reform/respect for private property). I want tax reform, but I don't want to continue funding parasitic excrescences like the EPA or the Dept of Education, so the size of government needs to shrink first. And underneath all that you need a strong foundation in civics and history, so of course education reform is necessary. Where to begin?

52 The situation has become so dire that almost every one of those issues is a hill to die on.

Take abortion, I didn't vote for it but I'm not going to vote for a pro-abortion candidate. I might compromise if the result was the issue was returned to the states and the Feds got out of it.

Homosexual 'marriage' is similar but it is obvious the leave it to the states plan of the 90's failed.

Not much territory remains.

They're ALL essential issues and it was hard to choose.

I guess in the end I choose 2 of the most pressing problems:

Repeal Obamacare and protect the 2nd amendment. Then it was shrink the size/scope of the Fed.

In the end, I think all these issues are the hill to die on, since they are the cornerstones/principles of our entire movement - The Restoration of the Republic and the removal of the seditious tyrants who have hijacked the nation.

(1) The usual rule that there are 10 lurkers for every commenter.
(2) Trolls (MMFA and the like are paying a LOT of attention right about now, and a science fiction author, female, whose name escapes me right now had a really good post about how a lot of the "Republicans suck, don't vote, go third party" posts on right-wing sites are probably deliberate paid trolling operations.

182 Abortion is the big one for me. Not only is it the most important issue in and of itself, but it's a good litmus test. Rarely do I meet fellow pro-lifers who don't turn out to be in general accord with all of the other issues that I hold dear, though there are some small exceptions. Usually if an individual is pro-life all of the other issues fall into place.

1.No giving the world US citizenship, which means game over for American founding principles.

It's not just about science. Imagine it:

A clever drunk has heard about the hydrophobic coating, so he remembers to turn at an angle before letting loose. Another drunk walks by at that moment, and the pee bounces off the wall like a super ball onto the newcomer's pants. Punching ensues. This is how wars in Europe start.

188 Just got through transcribing review notes from the Federalist papers for my class. It is depressing to see how Madison and Hamilton sanguine predictions of the future and their view of the national government would act is so not representative of today.

Instead, it should read how the cravenness of Congressional leaders will surrender their institutional powers to the ambitions of the Anointed One. PUT UP SOME DAMN TOILETS YOU FCUKERS!

I am always amazed that we don't get upset by the fact that here in the US in the downtown areas of most cities, it's almost nigh impossible to find someplace to pee.

Who hasn't been caught out and had to beg (and get refused) the use of some restaurant or other place that has some facility) to use their john?

This should be a matter for public concern and paid for by the taxpayers. Yet it doesn't get done and since men are built to more easily pee at random we wind up with people pissing all over the place.

Other countries have some acknowledgement of the problem (the solutions aren't so great but at least they're trying) and understand that when you gotta go, you gotta go.

The answer to why that has not happened is a study in what is wrong with modern Government, why it endlessly consumes more money and delivers less and less each year.

Short version: The ADA requires that any such toilets be wheelchair accessible, etc, etc, so huge and expensive. SF tried to put some in anyway, and they were mostly occupied by junkies who found them a perfect space for shooting up, so they took them out.

Give everyone a firearm. You'll see people being more polite more considerate and definitely more cautious in public.

The most powerful counteractant for bigotry or bias is a recitation of the facts or ignoring those spewing out garbage.

Getting all hissy about it is a waste of time, presents them with a new target and justifies themselves to themselves for their stupidity and social isolation.

ANY attention paid to bad behavior is risky because so many thrive on getting people to respond.

Shrink the size, and reach, of the Federal Government. Who wants to live in a police state.

269 I voted for repealing Obamacare, no amnesty and no gay marriage. I am a Christian and believe marriage is a covenant between God, a man and a woman but that is only part of why I oppose gay marriage. Gay rights activists are using gay marriage and the 14th amendment to browbeat Christians into celebrating their sin or face the destruction of their businesses. A fake, made up "right" to marry should not trump the actual explicit language of the first amendment that guarantee free speech (including expressive actions) and also guarantee the free exercise of religion.

Actually, truth be told, the same thing went on before this.

Only the hospitals had some measure of flexibility because they could equalize their outlays on the poor and old on those who had more money. But the same decisions were being made. Just that now they're being done by a Gov't bureaucrat and because of budgetary limitations whereas before it was some MBA balancing profit v loss equations.

Going back far enough, the poor always did die of the mundane because they couldn't afford the help needed.

We've had governmental interference in the normal death rate vis a vis one's income for a long time. Originally it was paid for by donations from the rich, then the government got involved and codified who, what, where and how much but the hospitals/caregivers still had some flexibility. Now there is none and no one who cares.

Lot of Presidents are/were lefties. More than the odds would seem to indicate. Have no clue what that means though. good or bad.

I'm always in awe that they essentially write upside down and backwards.

Still they're the spawn of Satan. One step below a ginger.

So by this logic every Black in the country should

get on their knees and praise God that their relatives sold them into

slavery, or they would still be back in Africa getting Ebloa.

I don't care what the context was for this comment. It is not worthy of this blog.

In 1740, a novel was published in England called "Pamela; or Virtue Rewarded". As Wikipedia notes: "It tells the story of a beautiful 15-year-old maidservant named Pamela
Andrews, whose country landowner master, Mr. B, makes unwanted advances
towards her after the death of his mother. After attempting
unsuccessfully to seduce and rape her, her virtue is eventually rewarded
when he sincerely proposes an equitable marriage to her. In the novel's
second part, Pamela marries Mr B and tries to acclimatise to
upper-class society. The story, a best-seller of its time, was very
widely read but was also criticized for its perceived licentiousness." -- http://tinyurl.com/mrx86g7 -- but enough about that, I've never read it.

What I have read were two.....well, we can call them parodies....written by the Marquis de Sade in 1791 ["Justine; or, The Misfortunes of Virtue" -- http://tinyurl.com/qbv9avw ] and 1801 ["Juliette, or Vice Amply Rewarded" -- http://tinyurl.com/o8hu4a ].

The fact is that slavery's manifold evils are well-known and understood. But, like the happy amoral nymphomaniac murderer Juliette, that doesn't put it "beyond mention" or even beyond parody. If I were to suggest that someone's line of reasoning made it seem like they were advocating "to enjoy oneself at no matter whose expense", it wouldn't be because I were an enthusiastic supporter.

RE the casino. I was gaming out the scenario with a friend and we came to the conclusion that he should say no. Not that I thought it was a bad idea, but the timing sucks politically, and you can always say yes later*, and the rule of never taking a first offer in a negotiation.

Then, Hard Rock came back with 200mil in sweeteners for the NBA mansion, and I thought, this is vindication for saying no the first time, he'll look like a negotiating genius if he says yes now.
But he didn't and now I'm a little confused, other than Iowa political considerations.

*Say no to building or bonding for anything, and those in favor won't relent. Say yes once and you're on the hook. Kinda like sex.

361 337 We have rights because God endowed us with them when
He created us in His image. Though a better term would be
'prerogatives'. What they are can be determined by a reading of His
commandments and observation of His Creation.

Absent that, there is no basis for 'rights', including property rights beyond the plausible threat of force to defend them.

370 Why do Democrats get to demand 10 out of 10 strict down the list compliance with their candidates, but Conservatives get 3, that they won't even really get unless a 10 out of 10 guy or gal gets elected. The three out of 10 candidate will bipartisan-compromise the last three away. Go for the gusto, demand what you want.
