NYPD "Quietly" Planning for Mumbai-Style IS Attack on NYC

Wonderful.

The 2008 Mumbai attacks were a larger-scale version of the mayhem the But the Crusades folks randomly perpetrated in Paris -- multiple teams running around setting bombs and shooting people.

he NYPD has quietly spent the last six months making preparations for a potential ISIS assault in Manhattan, which police fear could be similar to the 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai, India, sources told The Post.

Cops have been trained to deal with coordinated bombings and shootings, as in the four-day terror assault that killed more than 160 people in Mumbai, the sources said.

Police trainers have even placed a map of Manhattan over a map of Mumbai to show the geographical similarities, one source said.

I don't know how seriously to take this, because, frankly, this seems like routine preparedness brainstorming turned into PLANNING for purposes of a catchy story.

But I think it's accurate in this sense: We probably don't think about this stuff enough. When these attacks happen in Copenhagen, Paris, Sydney, or Oklahoma City, they're a surprise. They should not be. Because of course IS is planning a Mumbai style attack in NYC. Of course they are. It should not take a NYP article to alert us to that; we should have already have known it.

This article should not have drawn a "wonderful" response from me at all. To the extent I had any reaction whatsoever, I should have been grateful the NYPD was planning to counter obvious and inevitable IS attacks in NYC.

We -- even those of us who bother reading about terrorism and who actually take American terrorist casualties seriously, unlike our president -- are still not really fully updated to understand that the New Normal is that Islamist religious maniacs will kill a couple dozen of us every month, except in those months when they kill very much more than a couple of dozen.

6 How many guns are there in civilian hands in NYC, compared to Mumbai? How many guns in police hands? The NYPD is a vastly more capable force than the decrepit Mumbai constabulary, and NYC, for all it's gun insanity, still has far more personally owned firearms than India. I would imagine a Mumbai style attack in NYC would cause many casualties, but it wouldn't drag on for days like it did in Mumbai.

38 Jihadists are constantly, 24/7/365, planning mass murder and terror attacks on infidels.

They only reason they don't succeed more often is their utter incompetence, and our preparedness.

Every time we see some incident -- attack on the cops in Brooklyn, taking case-the-joint photos of major landmarks, stockpiling weapons, or whatever - that was their sincere attempt to launch another 9/11.

Luckily most of those attempts fail.

But we must keep ever vigilant, because they will never stop trying. Ever. or at least until (in Churchill's immortal words) "the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men."

Sure, you can decrease the body count if you shoot the perps without hesitation early in the attack. But you aren't going to stop it from happening that way -- just potentially minimize the deaths by ending it quickly.

So sure, prepare tactically -- but if you want to PREVENT such attacks you must pro-actively go after Muslim fundamentalists in the US, aggressively. And yes, I am suggesting deporting any non-citizens who preach or believe jihadist teachings. And crack down heavily on any mosque that pushes these ideas to citizens. Classify jihadism as a type of treason agains the rule of law in the US. Revoke their religious status if hey push these notions.

Well, I guess my point is that if a nuke goes off and we don't know where it came from, we're not talking about a MAD-situation.

Because we'd all be scrambling and looking around.

Then if a few weeks later it looks like it came from iran... I just doubt he's use a nuke to retaliate at that point. And the Mullahs will swear up and down that they have no idea, it must have been Israel or ISIS or whoever, and there will always be enough deniability to keep them alive long enough that they dont have to worry about Tehran getting nuked in return 20 minutes after their bomb blows up in the US or Europe

Theft. It's much more likely that a radiological weapon will be detonated than a truly nuclear one. And there is plenty of "missing" radiological material in this world. Including active warzones like, say, Ukraine.

True.

Unless they are masking it.

They can easily throw various levels of cesium, bismuth, potassium, and thorium isotopes (on the magnitude of micrograms) that would mask the source pretty well. 160 I am still surprised there hasn't been a terror bombing at a major American sporting event. You don't even have to get into the stadium to do a ton of damage and kill people.

Likewise I never understood why terrorists felt like they had to blow up a plane to successfully terrorize people. In the morning at Austin-Bergstrom, there are typically a few hundred people gathered near the front doors of the airport waiting to go through the security check. If a terrorist walked in there carrying a suitcase bomb, he could kill hundreds before even encountering security.

I don't give this much thought, but it always occurs to me when I'm waiting in a long-ass line taking my boots off to get through the TSA check.

179 The media presents the idea that all of NYC thinks one way. Heck, they think all of NJ and NY votes Democratic and are leftist. As someone who has lived and workedin both Southern(isH) Central and Western NJ, I can tell you that there are lots of people in Western and Southern NJ who own guns, hunt and reliably vote Republican. A good part of the church culture in those places is conservative. It's only because the big cities tend to vote Democratic-often because of large Democratic bases-that there is this idea that only leftist elitists live in NY and NJ.

My all-time favorite word derivation is "arigato," the Japanese word for "thank you."

Turns out, originally, Japanese had no term for "thank you" -- wasn't even a concept in their language.

Then these Portuguese traders showed up in Nagasaki and kept profusely thanking the Japanese for allowing them to stay and conduct trade. So they said, in Portuguese, their word for "thank you": Obrigado. (Which technically means "I am obligated to you" in Portuguese.)

The Japanese took a liking to this concept, but coulnt' quite catch how the foreigners said it. So the Japanese attempt to eplicate the Portuguese was "arigato."

It stuck.

Most people today, even in Japan, think it is a native Japanese word.

I also think the Boston Marathon was not a random choice. Sure, it was easier that entering a stadium, but it is also held on Patriot's Day - a MA holiday that celebrates the start of the Revolutionary War. Dates are significant to jihadis, and when they can, they schedule an attack for a particular date - such as 9/11 - for extra impact.

Which based on Broken Sword, didn't seem that it was thought out all that well.

IIRC, when the main guns fired, the pressure/sound meant everyone had to take cover inside. Which is not conducive to manning AA weapons while under attack.

There's blowback because the fine details of the "why should I care" attitude about terrorist attacks in US cities aren't really very relevant. 348 "First of all, even liberal enclaves like NY and SF are about 1/3 conservative, even if they get outvoted on every issue. So you've saying you want all of us to die too?"

Nope. I'm saying that there is a causal link -- a distant but distinct one -- between voting for soft-on-terror Democrats and ending up as a victim of terror.

Anyone familar with my brand of vitriol knows that I have a special vintage cask strength bottling of it reserved for Poppy Bush.

But as much as I dislike Poppy, I find it impossible to credit, if he had had a second term as president from '93 to '97, that we would have seen anything like the terror-enabling "Chinese Wall" installed in the federal security apparatus by Jamie Gorelick in 1995. Which forestalled the sharing of crucial antiterror intelligence.

Gorelick was in the government because Clinton was President.

Clinton was President on the strength of, among other things, a bunch of New Yorkers voting for him.

Some of those New Yorkers went on to get killed by jihadis who took full advantage of soft Clintonite lawfare policies.

Chickens, home, roost, some assembly required.

388 Fi, strangely Hornfischer did not use another Hoyt book for reference; the one on Nimitz and his admirals. But he used Internet sources.

And its a serious quibble I omitted from that comment because what I wrote was already lengthy was his use of the phrase 'suicide plane' about the attack on St. Lo. Technically he is correct, but that was the first successful attack by the newly formed special air unit that would be called Kamikazes.

Reason why I quibble is because there have been 'suicide planes' throughout the war. One of the earliest being a Zero pilot at Pearl Harbor knowing he would never make it back due to damage crashed his plane into a hanger. Or at Midway Lofton Henderson, his dive bomber mortally wounded; crashed his plane into the Japanese cruiser Mikuma.

Halfway through the defunding process a federal judge ruled against and halted the amnesty. McConnell obviously didn't think the political consequences with their notbase were worth the hassle of trying defund a (temporarily) dead policy and Boehner wasn't going to fight about it. If I remember correctly, it'll take a minimum 18 months for the regulations to be properly enacted and so there will be a whole OTHER annual budget come before then. WTF worry about it now and give the leftist media a year's worth of ammunition about how Republicans hate brown people?

Except for, you know, y'all's feelings and shit. Cuz Ace is a Democrat now, dontchaknow.

Well, I don't want to re-argue Miranda v Arizona here... But even if Miranda wasn't the law, the confession still probably should not be admissible because the guy was "forced" to testify against himself by the cops when they declined to provide him with a lawyer or let him (a minor, btw) decline to stop answering questions.

And, the evidence tree is very important in common law... They wouldn't have known about the phone if they hadn't (illegally) made him testify against himself.

That would not be admissible in court, because BUT FOR the cops' illegal break in, they would not have found the bag of marijuana.

So you are saying it's lack of firearm access that is keeping beefs from going all shootie. I'll counter its lack of guns that embolden NYCers to act like rat bastards to one another. The south isn't polite just because. It's polite because a well armed society is a polite society.

This is supposedly a very smart guy, but he jumps into a liberal trap with both feet.

There are some people who make fun of Sarah Palin not answering the "what do you read" question. A full showing of the exchange shows clearly that she was annoyed at Curic asking a question like that and replied "the same things you read in New York". Fully justified anger.

The narrative would never have taken hold if only liberals were saying she couldn't think of anything to say, but helpful witch-hating, latte sipping republicans jumped on board and hammered the meme in place.

On this one with Carson, I see no alternative understanding. Why he would say it is beyond me, but he did and there is no going back.

I think a large part of it is population density. More bang for your buck to use a crude term. Coupled with a more diverse population to hide in.Lack of firearms I'm sure plays into it, but I personally don't think quite so heavily, unless firearms are now able to shoot the explosion off of a car bomb.

No, I'm not stupid. I'm saying plenty of beefers have firearms, and while the NYPD is preoccupied with a jihadi attack on Neighborhoods A, B, and C, that's a pretty good time to be putting a cap in someone in Neighborhood D, E, or F and get away with it.

The subculture that settles beefs with gunplay exists in the South, too.

Never go any place in Texas, he said, without a gun.

580 All the way back in 2001 after the terrorist attack myself and many others predicted these types of attacks to begin in earnest. Targeting malls, or churches, or sporting events, or just any place where large numbers of people congregate.

It never really happened. I don't know why. It just seems like an easy way to strike terror into people all across the country. Imagine going to the grocery store and worrying about being killed by a car bomb or a suicide attacker. Or your kids at school.

I've heard of people doing that in their lawns. The dogs get all worked up and crazy before they get in to the house, and it makes it much tougher to prove in court that the dogs "honed in on the drugs" and looks much more like a "fishing expedition" since the dog is barking at everything, not just at the drugs.

619 NYPD sent some of their intel/CT staff to Mumbai within a week or so of what happened there. NYPD is probably one of the most proactive city police forces in the world when it comes to planning/'wargaming'/studying terrorist attacks and trying to counter such attacks. One of the most chilling facts from mumbai was the study of the bullet holes in walls. The NYPD guys noticed most of the holes were between 5 and 6 feet high. A lot of the casualties at Mumbai were killed with well aimed head shots.
