179 "Because you look like a hooker" will invite court cases.

But that's not really the reason, in most places.

Well, it is, but you can say it in a way that won't get you sued.

"Like it or not, your appearance is one of the things on which we, as a company, are judged. A sloppy or too casual appearance harms the company when it comes to gaining new business, and even keeping current clients. Since we can't have a rule that just says 'use good judgement,' we're required to create specific guidelines. The guidelines we have created are designed to assure, insofar as it is possible, a professional appearance in line with our customers' expectations."

And, yes, there are still some people who will complain. In my experience, however, places that explained their dress codes that way (and then actually did make sure the dress code met with customer expectations- I'm a software developer, to some extent my employer is lucky I'm in pants), have had far fewer problems than places that said "because that's the dress code."

Yep, Hillary is all about controlling information. Having control of the email server gave her the ability to control scandals and pesky FOIA and subpoena intrusions. This is the same woman who "found" Rose Law firm records in the personal quarters of the WH years after they were subpoenaed. And didn't she and an aide raid Vince Fosters office within hours of his death?

At least in my congregation, it's all the women who are about my own age. Which means it's the generation which first grew up thinking that was acceptable, and with their parents *not* (again) taking time to *explain* why it's inappropriate, but instead saying "just because we don't."

Well, those girls grew up and decided "F that," and wore whatever they wanted. Now *their* daughters are doing the same (and often worse), and even the ones uncomfortable with it have no leg to stand on when telling their daughters to cover up more.

RE: dress codes

This is where I mention having to take a client to go buy underwear before a court appearance.

This is also where I mention that there is a sign up in the courthouse in one of the more rural areas that has a list of various things such as:

Must remove hat at all times
Must wear a shirt
Must wear shoes
No breastfeeding in the courtroom
No smoking in any area of courthouse including courtroom
No chewing tobacco in any area of courthouse including courtroom

You know that every single is on there for a reason.

But a Senator from NY can still get access to all that, if not more.

A Secretary of State, you have MUCH more scrutiny regarding donations and swapping influence for money.

Also, you can be as "mavericky" as you want as a Senator, imagine a Senator Clinton calling Obama out for all his obvious foreign policy blunders, she would be much better positioned. Now she's a 3rd term for Obama, it's inescapable, with even more corruption from Clinton Inc.

When you are in an office, the only purpose of the dress code (especially if you don't see anybody outside of that office) is to keep the environment professional. And that line, in our pretty dressed down society, is kind of a mess.

Anyone know if Allen's "philanthropy" is actually such? I do not regard most of the activities of the tech tycoons as philanthropy, as I cannot consider efforts to reduce freedom and prosperity and further expand pernicious state power - a reasonable description of so much these people fund - as philanthropy. Most of the environmental crap, of course their political contributions - almost entirely to fascist and statist and racist elements - this is just more sabotage of the system that allowed them to (often, by chance) stumble into their bilions.

I agree. If I have an obligation (and I do) to dress according to the dress code, then it seems only reasonable that my employer has a counterbalancing obligation to see to it that the dress code is reasonable.

If I work in an office where I'm never going to see clients, there's no reason (as a software dev) that I shouldn't be allowed to wear jeans (shorts in the summer), a t-shirt, and tennis shoes.

As a consultant (which I am right now) I'm always on-site with a client- which then obligates me to dress more professionally than that. Which I both acknowledge and understand.

284 279 Regarding the Church thing, yea, I've noticed it. I think the issue is our culture has become so coarse that most people just don't seem to give it a second thought as being "slutty".

It is amusing though that I would almost say the older women dress sluttier than the young ones. You'll see a mom coming in with her family looking like she's been at a Las Vegas club for a bachelorette party.

I was at a megachurch once, and the trophy wife in front of me had on this tight, lacy, sheer dress that brought all kinds of attention to her rather well-formed behind. Had to hide my boner with a hymnal.

His current position is due to his acumen and the destruction, (oft times self inflicted) of his many detractors. He figuratively sits upon a throne of skulls.

293 I know several churchs have people who dress down (jeans) specifically to be 'welcoming' to anyone who comes in.

Yeah and its stupid. Clubs and organizations everywhere have distinct behaviors, ways of dressing, language, etc. People join them and like the feeling of it being a special unique thing they are part of, rather than like all the rest of life.

And the focus on God is lost. Worship, joy, love, respect, reverence, all out the window in the name of being more culturally relevant and comfortable. Church is not being church if its comfortable. It should afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.

Well there's a warm welcome to God's family.

Well if you'd read up above where I pointed out people can come however they want to but should learn over time wisdom and discernment enough to dress more appropriately, you might understand my point rather than cherry picking one comment.

I've taught my kids that we should dress for the detination. When we're in church, that means good clothing, not the same clothing for gardening or play. When in the choir, or when they're altar servers, they dress a certain way because they are on the altar, and are part of the mass. When I'm in the congregation, I usually don't bother with a dress coat or tie. When singing with the choir, I employ both.

It's not hard, but does call for reason and consistency.

Yeah, commonly the girl that sits in front of us wears lower jeans and a thong and when she stands up it tends to pull down on the back... Girls. Think about what you're doing when you dress okay? Is a thong really what you want to have on in church to begin with? Don't hand me that "comfortable" line, butt floss isn't about comfort.

305 "I suspect
some others in the congregation were wearing their least-worn jeans
because that's really their best clothes "

Now that, I wouldn't have a problem with. But this church was in an affluentish neighborhood (Plum Creek for those familiar with Austin suburbs) and we're talking about a bunch of middle class folks who just want to wear jeans because it's cool or something. The worship leader didn't even wear shoes!

King v. Burwell. Hmm. Yet another illustration of how farcical the judicial part of the broken constitutional system has become? There is no serious argument about the merits. Like many big cases, actually. Yet there is actually doubt and drama over how the court will rule on a situation where the language and legislative history/intent are as clear and unambiguous as the instructions on a fire extinguisher.

Pretty clear that the founders' idea of a judiciary simply hasn't worked out (on constitutional/judicial review matters). It's become an unaccountable super-legislature. By coincidence it seems to have mostly become dominated by the less talented and, in terms of sensibility, most alien and un-American people available, as well.

Which is more degrading, in a Soviet or Ceaucescu's Romania sense - this bizarre alien president and his lawless arrogance, or the SCOTUS' rampaging idiocy? The latter is worse at least in that there is this ridiculous, degrading "deference" to the Court - technically unjustified of course, notwithstanding Marbury - and ever more so because the entire legal industry bows down, treating silly capricious nonsense from the Court as if it's part of some serious process. Like Soviet journal articles (esp. starting in the 80s) that deferentially cited the increasingly ludicrous make-believe "doctrine" coming from the top.

307 I've always rebelled against dress codes in the civilian world. I don't know exactly why. Maybe it stems from the years I was in the military when the uniform policies were strict. I know my hatred of wearing hats comes from the military. Can't stand wearing a hat of any kind.

Posted by: Soona at March 04, 2015 12:17 PM (JAWal)

308 I don't have an issue with the jeans thing, I came from a family that dressed us in suits when we were kids on just a regular Sunday.

The culture is just more casual in all things when it comes to dress, most men wore a suit to the office if they had a white collar job. That's long gone now unless you're something like an attorney and going to court.

If people feel pressure to dress up I think it's going to mean less families in Church. I'd rather have a full congregation than a nearly empty, well dressed one.
