Because he has a very particular set of skills which include the four-seam fastball, the split-finger fastball as well as tracking down and putting the hurt on Twitter trolls who tweeted vile things to his daughter. And it turns out that not only is Schilling an amazing ball player, but that he's also quite computer savvy, a very loving and protective father, an interesting writer, and a general mensch. Now I've been using computers since 1981. I was a professional baseball player for 22 years. I played 10+ years in Philadelphia. I played 5 in Boston. I shared a locker room with well over a thousand teammates and I played and lived at school a year before doing so.That's all to say I am absolutely aware of social media and how it works. As someone who's said about 2.34 billion things he shouldn't have, I get it.
...Now let me emphasize again. I was a jock my whole life. I played sports my whole life. Baseball since I was 5 until I retired at 41. I know clubhouses. I lived in a dorm. I get it. Guys will be guys. Guys will say dumb crap, often. But I can't ever remember, drunk, in a clubhouse, with best friends, with anyone, ever speaking like this to someone.
This is a generation of kids who have grown up behind the monitor and keyboard. The real world has consequences when you do and say things about others. We're at a point now where you better be sure who you're going after.If I was a deranged protective dad I could have been face to face with any of these people in less than 4 hours. I know every one of their names, their parents, where they go to school, what they do, what team they are on, their positions, stats, all of it. I had to do almost nothing to get ANY of that information because it is all public.
What part of talking about a young woman, my daughter or not, makes you even consider the possibility that this is either funny or makes you tough?
I found it rather funny at how quickly tone changed when I heard via email from a few athletes who'd been suspended by their coaches. Gone was the tough guy tweeter, replaced by the "I'm so sorry apology used by those only sorry because they got caught.

An update received the results of my PET scan today and God is good and so are the prayers of the horde and Carol. Will still have to do chemo weekly but less horrific version, I will get to keep my hair. So thank you to everyone who whispered a prayer it works.

He named the college though. That was it. Completely harmless, non offensive tweet recognizing his daughter's achievement.
Some Internet Tough Guys started with the "oh I need to get her number " bit, and then it turned really dark really fast and people who hate him because of his baseball history, or his political stance, or whatever started going into *very* explicit details about what they wanted to do to his daughter (rape, mostly).
He tracked their asses down and broadcast their information, leading to suspensions from schools and firings. Twas a thing of beauty.,

Your welcome I told the doctor I was a little disappointed I wouldn't lose my hair. Prior to chemo my hair was long and straight. The Ettes will know of what I speak when I say after chemo when my hair came back in it had lots of body and curl which is a dream when you have problem hair. I never could get my hair to do anything but just hang there. So I figured third time would be a charm and hair would be even curlier. Ha doc had to laugh at me.

How are you & Wisconsin weather?
Last time I paid attention we are a few inches of snow record here. It was 102+ inches & when I called man across street to move his car because we could hit it, he moved 4x & turned car off only to see he was still,in same spot.
Driving is horrible & Newton is only city according to local news to have crews out to move snow from,water dams for when,I hope,,snow turns to rain.
Boston mayor wants citizens to do it as part of community. I don't think it's going to happen.
My city has removed snow from main streets but we are on side street & at mercy of Mother Nature.
I have very early crocus that usually are in bloom by now but they are in snow/Ice mountains.

Unless you're at a particular museum that's closely associated with paleontology, there's a good chance there won't be much in the way of actual fossils. Not the big stuff, anyway, like the apex therepods and whatnot and particularly not the fossils of the actual specimen on display. So yeah, you're probably gonna be told "sorry, no can do".

Yes, I bought a Mazda 5 last July. It's sort of a mini-minivan. I wanted something with cargo capacity. I like it fine so far. The only complaint I have is that the local gas mileage isn't as good as I hoped. It was advertised as 21 city and 28 highway. I've been getting 18-20 local. But the one road trip I took I got 31 on the highway, which is pretty good. Unfortunately almost all of my driving is local. But I don't do a whole lot of driving, so it's not like I'm going to go broke putting gas in it.
I've read that Mazda is going to discontinue the 5 in the U.S. due to poor sales. I think the 2014 model is the last one, so you might be able to get a good deal. That model will still be made for the European and Asian markets, where it is more popular.
Besides the Mazda 5, there is also the Mazda 3 compact sedan and hatchback, and the Mazda 6, which is a larger sedan. I've heard that they both get better mileage than the 5, which is heavier. Apparently there is also a Mazda 6 wagon which is sold overseas, but not in the U.S.

There are times in science when it is convenient to think of something in two very different ways -- light, for example, can be considered a particle or a wave. I can't imagine a time when it might be more convenient to look at the historical record like SbtGoI-95 does....but I can't say it'd never happen. I figure that SbtGoI-95 has reasons of his own to believe his theory -- I hope they're working out for him.

I'm not sure I'm following your train of thought. Yeah, there's not THAT many Rex fossils (complete or close to complete), somewhere around a dozen or so IIRC... but, there's quite a bit more of partials and bits. As few as Rex has, it's pretty well represented compared to others. All you need is one, really to establish that it existed. Some have been known for a long time, but for one reason or another, have little to their name, like Spinosaurus and Megalosaurus. I'm not sure what you mean about structural work being suspect... yeah, up to a point... there's only so much you can be sure about with fossils, so it's always an ongoing debate. But, foundation stuff can be determined.

I used to waste 1/2 hour, maybe more blow drying hair only to have it curl & frizz. Hair stylist I started with before 1999 made me appreciate natural waves/semi curls.
I still kept blow drying it until we lost power in early 2002 & I had no choice & have never wasted that time again drying hair.
I have to use spray gel, comb through, add more & leave alone for just right time & then fluff. Timing is everything.
It's best if I keep it short & curls right up. It's fine & curly /wavy in back & left side. Right side isn't as curly.

I did ask him quite directly, if those skulls and femurs and such were now just pure mineral, or was there any actually any dinosaur still in there?
To which, he showed me a large (over 4' long) femur, which he was re-assembling from some fractured pieces. In that he had to do some drilling and grinding to insert metal rods and epoxy, he showed me how to tell the actual, ancient bone from the deposited mineral portions, and how they both existed together in the same fossil, looking much like some poorly mixed cream n' coffee.
His backyard had an untold fortune in museum grade fossils, and he knew each and every tiny bit of 'em, and the physiology of each critter, right down to the finest detail.
A whole bunch of what you see in the Houston museums, is his work.
But yeah..... a lot of those fossils are real, gen-ye-wine Dinosaur bits. He even finds mummified tissue on some of them. Seen it with my own eyes, and touched it with mine own hands.
What he does, is very impressive.
And as for the age of the dinosaurs? That's another discussion. Suffice to say, that Leviticus has some things to say about some giants that used to hang around here, and the original language in Genesis where the "World was without form, and void".....those words, "form" and "void", are said to be from the same root for "judged" and "condemned".
The Genesis world was a flooded one, just as Noah's became flooded.
God didn't promise Noah to not ever judge the world again. He just said he wouldn't do it with water.
Next one is fire, amigos y' amigas. Keep that in mind when you wanna "Let it Burn?"
Frankly, I think any Bible believing Christian should understand that the Earth is indeed, ancient beyond words.

BTW anyone else notice that "Conan" had a lot of Asian actors in it? The sidekick, the wizard, not to mention the fencing-masters. I don't remember all this in Robert Howard's books. The Hyborean world was more European. Lots more.
The books' setting was more civilised too - the Asians in the movie were dressed like Mongols, not like the guys in "Hero" (or even "Flash Gordon").
Almost like the original "Conan" script was a Temujin or Attila epic, and later retrofitted to Howard's stories.

Exactly. That was a simplified first order definition back in the day, but with a stack of caveats and exceptions. Kinda like in high school astronmy you might talk about a planet orbiting the sun in a circle, but move up a level and it's ellipses and barycenters.
The modern definition of species is based on descent, traits and DNA, to the extent it can be defined. The way genes jump about from critter to critter in the real world, things get kinda fuzzy around the edges.

Well I was explicitly told NO hookers and NO strippers while she was gone. :-)
Now I had my lawyers go over this and according to them hookers and strippers are defined professions and not activities per se. So as long as no money is exchanged for any acts, sex and nude dancing would not be forbidden under this clause. I like their legal theory but I'm not so sure it would hold up in WifeCourt. :-)

Got to talk with one of the test pilots for the F6F Hellcat today (pretty sure that was it). He is 100%, in his early 90s. He'd flown a zillion types, of course, covering the prop and jet eras. His favorite plane? F4U Corsair.
Said among other things as an instructor he'd taught Tyrone Power formation flying at Corpus Christi, and also had two Heisman Trophy winners among his students (one played for U. of Minnesota, Bruce Smith/Heisman 1941; Smithasked this guy, who was from Michigan - "is that a problem for me?").
Anyway, my love for this country's past, almost daily, is grinding against my low and plunging regard for it today. Talking with WWII vets, as I try to do often, now often as not just leaves me more sad than inspired, as previously.

M249 - a few months back I did some very conscientious eavesdropping and observation and managed to absorb most of the briefing for basic operation of the M249 - feeding, jams, barrel-changing, etc. Navy EOD team was getting their basic training and trigger time at a range where I'm an RO. Unfortunately it was the main range, most "public" of them all, so no trigger time for me. At one of our other, more private ranges I think they'd have given me a few bursts to play with.

Have been to almost every WWII-related military museum/site in Japan (there actually are some now, big change from years back). Highly recommend all of them, esp. Chiran in Kyushu (kamikaze "tokutai" special attack squadron base).

Yep Kansai area as well. And yes she totally indulges my all quirky interests too. For instance she's not really into guns but she's always a good sport if I drag her to a gun show or shop we happen to pass by. Likewise for my radio interests, rock collection, desire to keep bees, or whatever other interest takes my fancy.
One nice thing is that in Japanese culture the wife rules the kitchen and household in general. That's her domain and she doesn't expect me to help out with cooking or cleaning. Likewise anything mechanical, structural, car-related, financial or otherwise unpleasant is my domain and she expects me to just take care of it.
Now most American couples tend to fall into this patten over time anyway - only with a lot of feminist expectation angst/conflict along the way. The nice part is that since this pattern is totally normal in Japanese culture, we could skip that whole step and neither one of us feels like we're getting a bad deal in the marriage responsibility area.

I cannot see any conflict between evolution theory and creation theory. And the six day thing? What is a day to God? There are more than one creation theory and they all start with Adam or a reasonable facsimile there of. And many of them start with an area that is now at the bottom of the Persian Gulf. Creation theory only covers a small number of verses in the Bible. They were in a hurry to get to Adam, because that was the important part. The other thirteen billion years was just prelude.

One of my best friends in High School lived at this condo complex. I was over hanging out by the pool at his place and this girl walks in wearing a bikini -- and I can tell you that she was built like a burlap bag full of bobcats....there were cosines and arctangents oscillating in all sorts of fascinating harmonic and contrapuntal ways. Here in CA, the fees are similar -- based on a percentage of the salary the job pays, but at least we can submit a really small number of signatures instead.
I found that out after the deadline last year, but thinking about it myself. Just to show the flag, if nothing else.
Only need 60 signatures to get on the ballot for the House. Just have to set up a table outside Vons and try to look adorable.

I was late to the party, myself, in a lot of ways -- didn't really develop chest hair until about 25, facial hair at about 21 (....and I still can't grow a beard without looking like I've got radiation sickness). But this girl was seriously bodacious at an age where I'd more expect playing with dolls.
The point being, you were entirely right to be protective -- and the boyz who were sniffing around weren't necessarily curbstompable fuckstains unless and until they demonstrated that they wouldn't take a hint. I'm glad that the youngsters did, by-and-large.

Brother in law married a woman with 2 daughters about 10 years ago. Oldest daughter was 12 at the time they met, youngest was 8. When my sister first saw the 12 year old, she thought she was 18. Then at my BIL's wedding to the girls mother a yearish later, oldest daughter was maid of honor, wearing a dress the two other bridesmaids were wearing. Needless to say, the now 14 year old was getting hit on by guys in their 20's who had no idea how old she really was.
The youngest one? She looked all of her 8 years old until she turned 14, then she looked like a 20 year old.

Huge changes coming to college education industry soon.
Bammer thinks that making community college "free" will solve all problems, but it won't. The whole college tuition system just doesn't work.
Today, a smaller college nearby announced that it was closing at the end of the school year. This college's students are usually the daughters of the wealthy, and it just doesn't have the finances to make it anymore. US citizens just aren't going to pay $150K for their daughter's educations. The school has been accepting more foreign students because they can charge them more, and they aren't worried about writing that check for $150K, but those students don't feel the "connection" with the school to write out donation checks after they graduate.
All of this makes me realize that for any college to be successful raising money, they need a football team. It really seems to strengthen alumni's ties to their school.

A decade ago, our Iowa county started to get slammed with identity theft. Illegal immigration had always been a minor problem, but with wider use of the internet and increasingly open borders, the sheriff's department found itself swamped with tracking down the actual identities of the people they'd pulled over. It's still a huge problem, and the GOP is delusional if they think amnesty is going to fix such problems.

The level of scrutiny when you run for US Senate is so much higher than when you run for US Rep. Unless you want almost every detail of your life picked over, best go for the US Rep.
Remember, the media will ask people you went to high school, college or worked with lots of questions about you. Lots of people from your past aren't Republicans, hate Republicans, and will be happy to trash you to further the Democrats.
Plus, get someone who is media savvy to help you. Not just someone who can buy advertising, but someone who knows exactly how to conduct yourself in an interview such as how to answer questions, when to stop talking, and how to look comfortable being interviewed. Too many candidates look bad doing this, and they get marginalized.

Looking at the list from post #629, the last 43 R's are in R+4 or less districts. If you are in a district about as evenly split, you might have an excellent chance, as the incumbent is probably in a lot of trouble from today's "Failure Theater".
Watch for "'splainin'". Take notes and save video.
Link the pain everyone feels to his votes and failures. Make it clear that, no matter what he says, he just wants to be reelected. He will still vote the same way.

I intend to do exactly that. It's a very strong R district, but he pissed off a lot of people when he voted for Boehner. He's also gotten waaay too comfortable. The thing to remember about FB is that it's your feed, so you don't have to look at anything you don't want too - you don't have to "follow" those irritating friends that post nothing but lefty propaganda, you can dismiss offensive ads, etc ... It's a pain but worthwhile. Make sure all your privacy settings are "friends only" and be careful - your shouting from your front porch.
I'm ambivalent about it at times, it can negatively affect the psyche for sure, but it has replaced Internet forums for many club/group activities and can be good for dispersed families. Twitter, OTOH, I left behind months ago and don't miss it at all - it's a mob ...

I was goofing on you, of course. The Horde is both incredibly complex, yet very simple (boobies!); with a truly insane level of embedded expertise....yet a bunch of Morons. I don't find it particularly frightening or intimidating, because I can mostly channel/surf its will -- but I will concede the power within.
A while back, Joffen's sister came to the Horde and conjured it -- and that was a bit frightening. She was conflicted, felt one thing and asked for another.....and such was her natural charisma and the Horde's love for her brother, she got what she asked for in abundance. While it may have been a healing experience overall, she ultimately decided to withdraw from the echoes of her brother's loss....but only after the Horde was stirred into activity. It is a good thing that she did not invoke something truly dreadful.
In the meantime, however, we're just a bunch of convivial goofballs......and we're damned glad to have you with us.

The fiancee and I visited Saint Petersburg, Russia a while back. Every spring, a couple of people get nuked when a 200-pound chunk of ice thaws off a building and drops 40 feet to the sidewalk.This seems like a not-too-subtle signal to relocate....
