It's Been Three Years Since Andrew Breitbart Left Us

Twitchy noted this sad anniversary over the weekend.

Jim Geraghty won the ACU's Journalist of the Year Award on Friday, and has posted about what he would have liked to have said, had he more advanced warning that he'd be winning something and should prepare a speech for it.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Andrew Breitbart lately. It was three years ago he addressed this conference for the last time. People look back and I see him described as this angry guy, a fighter – he titled his autobiography "Righteous Indignation." I wouldn’t claim to be his best friend or to have known him well, but I don't think he’s given enough credit for being a man who was really driven by love.

That may sound kind of sappy or like it belongs on a Hallmark card, but he demonstrated an amazing kindness and generosity of spirit to those around him.

The day Andrew died, it seemed like everyone on my Facebook page posted a picture that they had taken with him. For a guy who was always on the go, he rarely if ever seemed like he didn’t have time for other people. So many people offered their tale of meeting him at a conference or gathering, getting to talk to him for ten minutes or so, and walking away from that conversation feeling like for that ten minutes, they were the most important person in the room. A lot of his fans, friends, and contributors to his site offer some version of the same story, meeting Breitbart and sharing a news tip and then being told by him, "that is a really good story idea, and you're the one who should write it." That’s what happened to my friend Kurt Schlichter, and there are so many people who got into writing or journalism because instead of holding onto a scoop or an idea for himself, Andrew told them they could do it. You don't treat people with such enthusiastic encouragement if you don’t have a lot of love for people.

I've mentioned this before, but Andrew's death kind of woke me up to thinking seriously about both Life and Death. 90% of the reason I post about health-related issues is because of Andrew's death -- he was the first contemporary of mine to die. When you're young, you really do think you're sort of Immortal, or at least you never think about mortality at all (which makes you a passive, ignorant believer in your own mortality).

Then one day a great big Surfing Bear of a man dies at a young age and you start thinking about it a lot.

But the fact that Andrew died young is just happenstance; that says little about him. The other thing his death forced me to think about was Life. There's no point fearing death if you're not loving life.

And Andrew's death forced me to confront the different ways we were living life -- to wit, he was and I wasn't. He was really alive, just excited and plugged in and enthusiastic and brave, so g**damned brave about everything.

I'm not really doing a terrific job of Living Each Day As If I Were Andrew Breitbart, but I am trying, here and there, to engage more with Actual Life and not treat it as something to be avoided.

6 Nice post, Ace.

Watching my father's decline has made me re-commit to living life. In my case, the focus has been more about (1) appreciating the loved ones in my life, (2) telling them I love them and why they matter to me, and (3) doing my best to be a positive force in strangers' and acquaintances' lives.

10 so g**damned brave about everything.

This is the part that I missed for so long.

It's easy to say that we don't have the microphone he did, and miss *why* he had that microphone.

It's also easy to forget that he paid a price for it.

Bravery isn't not being afraid.
It's being afraid, and doing it (whatever "it" is) anyway.

15 Breitbart "got it" like no conservative I have ever seen. He really knew how to battle the media and was just fearless.

He was almost like losing a William F. Buckley. He wasn't a great policy mind or philosopher, he just knew how to get in the mud and beat them at their own game.

...and brave to take to the podium to put little Anthony Weiner in his place for smearing him about hacking at little Anthony Weiners own press conference. Epic.

49 I miss Breitbart tremendously, more than a little bit because I too believe Obama would have been defeated had AB lived.

But the truth is I most miss his optimism, his happy willingness to fight for America and what's right and because I miss his daily impact. I sit in my office and argue for a better America on the internet, mostly talking to people with whom I mostly share views in common. Andrew went into the lions den and argued with the Propaganda Press, with Democrats, with John Lewis (and his amazing Tea Party smear), with Nancy Pelosi and the much hated pederast Hairy Reid. He fought complacency. He fought stupidity. He fought fascism every day.

He woke me up and I really miss him.

It looked as if things might really change; we could turn around this rot and decline. Then suddenly he was gone. I felt as if God were methodically kicking away every support we were relying on, saying "Nothing can save you now". Then a year later, we got Pope Shitty the First just to make the point more clear. 100 Ace,
Great words in honor of a great man. As your life partner, I feel it's necessary to publicly offer some advice that you as well as the several regular commenters that fill up these message boards could benefit from:

Breitbart had a heart condition. He was taking good care of himself and he dropped to the pavement while out for a walk anyway.

George Burns smoked a cigar and drank three martinis a day every day his entire adult life and passed on at the age of 102.

Stop worrying about death. An exploding satellite could hit you in the face tomorrow.

Just live.

I remember that story. If memory serves, Breitbart won a bidding war for a charity in which the prize was dinner with Ayers at his (Ayers') home and yes, Breitbart made bomb jokes and allusions throughout the dinner. Ayers was a good sport about it--I'm guessing because Breitbart was simply one of those people who is hard to dislike whether you agreed with him or not.

In my family, one of the highest compliments we can give a person is to say, 'Hey, you're a class act.'.

124 Leadership is a key factor in human organization. The Left often likes to downplay the effect singular individuals have, saying things are just the result of Historical Forces.

And the Great Man Theory of History can be overblown, but leadership plays a major role. Human beings are tribal and hierarchical and we crave a strong leader. Vast majority of people want a strong leader they can rally behind and fight for. It's a force multiplier, as they say.

Breitbart was a force multiplier.

140 I cried when I heard that Andrew was dead. Like the JFK assassination or 9/11, I'll never forget where I was or what I was doing when I first got that news.

I cried because this man I'd never met was my personal hero and he felt like a personal friend. The best way to meet the evil we are up against is with audacity and great good humor, and Andrew had both, consummately. He was THE "Happy Warrior" we so badly need to lead the way.

I remember how his book was the only non-fiction book I think I've ever read all in one sitting. I opened it the minute it arrived in the mail (one of the few books I've ever paid full price for so that I could get it as soon as it was off the presses) and did not quit until the last page. Then I was ready to go back to the beginning and read it all over again! The man's spirit was so engaging, so invigorating, I just wanted to guzzle down it in great quantities.

I still shed tears when I think of him. I feel privileged to have "known" him, and he will always be an inspiration to me. He was one of the best specimens of the human race, and his glory still shines. I pray that one day the truth will be exposed about his death (yes, I do believe he was murdered -- as was the assistant coroner who investigated his death and "mysteriously" died of arsenic poisoning the day before the head coroner was to release the final report).

My favorite Andrew speech of all time was the one at CPAC at 2011 (the roller-skating one!) The link will take you to Part 1 of the speech -- so when it finishes, be sure to click on the link to Part 2, and then when that finishes, click the link to Part 3. 217 RE Coulter v. Breitbart

I never got the idea that Breitbart was schilling anything. He was a bit of a New Wave movement conservative. He had a mission and tried to energize others to do join in.

Coulter is not movement. Yes, she's "conservative" to a degree but the end of the rainbow for much of her message is a new book and concomitant tour. Nothing wrong with that and we need such actors, but Breitbart was in a different realm.

I would not equate the Breitbart's goal of an internet presence to be pitching content for the sake of capitalism either. His web was a tool for dissemination. Essential to the mission. Maybe the difference is subtle WRT book tours and all, but I think the difference rather more substantial.

"From Sister Monique, via Filles de la Charite, PARIS
Late Sunday afternoon on 1 March 2015, I received a message from M. Francoise, a delegate of the International Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and I managed to reach her by telephone.
She was leaving for Paris, and collapsed at the news she had just received: members of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul in Syria were kidnapped, along with their wives and children. The children were isolated and put into cages. Adults who do not deny their faith will be decapitated, and their children burned alive in the cages. M. Francoise had been in regular contact with several of them before all this occurred. She asked me to transmit the news and make a fervent appeal for prayers for these people, and all who are held hostage.
Let us remain fervently united in prayer, and have as our intention the welfare of all brothers and sisters in our Christian faith who are being held hostage"

Correction: *Everyone* including Conservatives hung him out to dry.

This was largely because people (including Conservatives) were so focused on Sherrod that they missed the actual point- the audience. And Conservatives then screamed that she should lose her job.

Then the *full* video comes out, and made the full point more clear. Whoops.

As for O'Keefe, I think he needed Breitbart (and, frankly, still needs someone like him). Breitbart would have known better than to oversell some of the stories, and would have been better able to dribble out the good ones for best effect.

I am convinced Beck used to read this place. We'd be talking about stuff Obama did in his past or his Alinsky ties or whatever and it seemed like he would start talking about it on his show that night.

I am too. Same observation.

On a sidenote, as far as The Blaze acquiring content from others without sufficient attribution, I believe that, too. And that's directly related to observations made when reading bloggers/comments on conservative sites.

Did Beck and his sidekicks do this? I don't think directly, no. But I get the impression that as the Blaze empire was growing, researchers pilfered ideas/stories from the web and co-opted them without explicitly footnoting the source.

Not a novel concept in the world of web, but still a problem.

287 I am pushing 70 now. I don't really fear death. I have about 13.7 billion years experience at not being alive and for the most part it was pretty forgettable.

I anticipated a lot of the aging events. More aches and pains, less energy... the usual things. What I did not anticipate was the death of so many people I know. Friends (some close and some just "howdy's"), relatives, people I worked with. Last year was my 50th high school reunion and, although I did not attend, they listed the classmates that have died since 1963. Many we lost in Viet Nam but it was shocking how many others have gone over the years.

This is probably the main thing I was not anticipating with getting older, the loss of so many people I have known.

"Beck invited/interviewed countless Jews on his programs"

So what? So does everybody who has a radio show. Only the fringiest Muslims and white racists don't interview Jews.

"regularly
consults/prays with them"

Court Jews. There are prominent liberal Muslim figures who do the same such as Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf. Doesn't mean anything.

"has been a huge defender of Israel, had a
substantial mission where he invited Americans to join him to Israel,
and on and on and on."

If you read that link I posted, you'll see that there is a reason for Beck's support for Israel. It's entirely self-serving.

Again, Glenn Beck constantly harps on specific Jews whom he thinks are responsible for destroying America. I'm not suggesting that he not name obvious villains like George Soros (who is only half-Jewish and never raised in Judaism) but the overwhelming majority list of surnames that he finds to be problematic are Jewish.

296 Breitbart built things but did it on his terms. He didn't try to be like everybody else but he did have ambition. He was also manic.

This is what separates him from a Coulter. This is what separates him from Ace.

Very few people on the right would ever take his risks but he believed in those risks. After all, the twitter sparring wasn't raking him in rights fees. We need more "enough of the BS" types. Sadly, they're all on the left and they're all sure of themselves... its more of not finding the right flavor of salvation.

Then again, Ace, you've done some good stuff by letting good people do their work. Its not as impactful, but the weekend crew is doing the service of any adequate newspaper and that you let DD go nuts under your aegis has been a good thing.

Not everybody is a 5-tool guy. Even most 5-tool guys in baseball aren't really. But damn when you get one.

----

The people who think Breitbart is a nasty piece of work... I'll judge him by how he treats those around him. From all that was said, quite well, even those who disagreed with him. Let it be said, his last social activity was shooting bull with some guy at the bar. Very few are willing to get down to that level... very few will have access to the top. He played at all levels.
