Gun Thread - What Fresh Hell? Edition [Weirddave]

Gun of the Week 1

Gun of the Week 2

News of the Week

So, this happened. BATF moves to ban M855 NATO Ball ammunition. So what's behind the move? Most of you probably use .223 when you're pinking, not green tips, so who cares? Kevin Williamson over at NRO has the full scoop.

A little background, which is unavoidably weedy: In 1986, Congress revised the Gun Control Act, inserting prohibitions against the manufacture and import of "armor-piercing ammunition." Armor-piercing ammunition does not mean ammunition designed to defeat body armor - that would be too simple. It means, most broadly, ammunition that could defeat the soft body armor of the sort that was cutting edge in the 1980s. But banning all such ammunition as "armor-piercing" would have meant a ban on practically all hunting rifles. One of the truly ignorant and insipid aspects of our gun-control debate is that the gun-grabbers spend so much time wringing their hands over "assault rifles," which are relatively low-powered but kinda-scary-looking firearms generally chambered for rounds (mainly the .223) that are too small even to legally use for deer hunting, while at the same time insisting that they do not wish to bother us about hunting rifles, which generally are much, much more powerful than the AR-15s that so dominate the progressive imagination. So, "armor-piercing" came to mean ammunition made of certain materials (tungsten alloys, steel, etc.) that could defeat certain kinds of body armor and that could be fired from a handgun. But, again, similar problems crop up: Almost all rifle cartridges could be fired from a handgun, because there are handguns chambered for all manner of cartridges. The classic American rifle cartridge, the .30-06, can be fired from certain handguns, as can classic big-game rounds such as the .45-70, which is popular among moose and grizzly hunters (as well as non-hunting hikers and campers who wish to be prepared for a moose or grizzly encounter). So that leads us to another refinement: an exemption for single-shot handguns. "The term 'single shot handgun' means a break-open or bolt action handgun that can accept only a single cartridge manually, and does not accept or use a magazine or other ammunition feeding device. The term does not include a pocket pistol or derringer-type firearm." So sayeth the ATF.

Read the whole thing, there's an completely separate line of attack coming from the EPA. This administration just can not accept that there are some things that they may not do. Stymied by the courts in their gun control efforts, they won't stop looking for another way around. Why it's almost as if they'll go through the gate. If the gate's closed, they'll go over the fence. If the fence is too high, they'll pole vault in. If that doesn't work, they'll parachute in , but they're going to get gun control passed. Somebody said that once, I forget who. Predictably, this has led to a run on 5.56. I've heard some folks who worship at the church of AK gloating over this. Take a gander at GOTW 1 and reread the excerpt from the NRO article. Yea, you're in the cross-hairs too, Charlie.

Sometimes Everyone Need a Little Something to Absorb the Recoil

G.O.T.W. Answers

Today seems to be Russia day at G.O.T.W. The first is a BHAKR39, a Krinkov pistol chambered in 7.62 X 39. The second is the TP-82, the Soviet "Space Gun". From Wiki: "It was intended as a survival aid to be used after landings and before recovery in the Siberian wilderness. The upper two smoothbore barrels used 12.5x70 mm ammunition (32 gauge), and the lower rifled barrel used 5.45x39mm ammunition. The pistol could be used for hunting, to defend against predators and for visible and audible distress signals. The detachable buttstock was also a machete that came with a canvas sheath." Pretty cool.

I fixed them. One of the blog software's, er, charms, is that it turns a lot of non-alphabet characters ( things like ", ' ,-, etc..) into black diamonds when you publish a thread. So if you write the thing on a word processor, you have to go back and change those characters to Pixy approved ones in the post editor. To add to the fun they don't show up as diamonds in the preview. I always try to find and replace all of them before going live, but this time I missed a bunch. All fixed now.

I spent a ridiculous amount of money to buy 1,000 rounds of the military 5.7x28, SS198LF, cause I figure ammo designed to be Armour piercing will probably get banned some day. It's a good investment.

15 Got 2 new automatics recently, and one fits in well with the thread.
It's a 7.62 Tokarev from the late'40's. Still in original cosmoline. (or whatever the Czech's used in '48. Walrus grease, for all I know). A 7.62 is a .32 caliber.
This munition (7.62x25) is almost twice the velocity of a .32 ACP. Essentially, it's a ".32 magnum". Very nice pistol, without the is-made-in-tractor-factory look of most East-Bloc handguns.

The other is Colt 1903 Hammerless .32 made in 1915 and in great shape. An early Saint John of Browning masterpiece. It's essentially a half-scale 1911. Bogart used one to cap that Nazi what were trying to keep Elsa from escaping Casablanca. So it's got that going for it, which is nice.

Man, that would be a hand-held flame thrower, wouldn't it. I doubt a quarter of the powder would burn before the slug exited the barrel, so it probably wouldn't have a vicious kick. But it would shoot several yards of hot fire, I expect.

You know, you see all the bumph published on the Internet about 3-D printing of guns, but how could you 3-D print ammo? Never happen, I expect. Unless, perhaps, you had a dedicated 3D printer with stores of gunpowder and primer compound, both of which the regime could easily control, right?

Personally, I'd like to see a set of good plans that would enable a home machinist with a lathe and drill press to build a nice little double-barreled .22 Derringer.

Incidentally, for the Morons living in Canada, or even close to the border, Princess Auto is about to have a sale on mini-mills for $699 Canadian. With the Loonie at about 80-odd cents U.S. right now, that's about $560 U.S. Ought to be the bee's knees for doing those 80% lowers.

32's and 7.65 were very popular before WWII. I have a 7.65 DWM Luger pre WWII. I would love to have a 1903, they are sweet guns. 7.65 luger (30 luger) shells are different that 32.

Bogie was a big fan of the 1903/08 pistols for on-screen use. He was a small man, seriously scrawny dude with no chest, and a 1911 dwarfed his hands and made him look smaller on screen. So the 03/08s had the same 1911 look in the muzzle, but were small enough to look in proportion to his hands/body.

Just goes to show how Bogie was a titan of acting. Scrawny, ugly, jowly, head about three sizes too big for his body, lisping, born with a silver spoon up his ass.........and he carves out an unassailable persona as a Hollywood sex symbol, blue collar tough guy.

The Pocket Hammerless .32 Colt was issued to General Officers in WWII. The .32s were engraved with the General's name. About a 100 are known to exist, and probably many more in family sock drawers. They seldom are sold, and demand a premium.

WWII Movie with the General wearing a .45 is mostly wrong. I've heard that they didn't screw it up in Patton, and that G.C. Scott shoots at the strafing plane with his .32 auto. (But I have no copy to watch and check)

I've had a good week. I found a SKS "M" that takes AK mags and a NHM 91 (Chinese AK) and bought em both. They have been illegal to bring into the US for 25 years.
While those other fellas have been chasing M855 ammo I bought the last 2 crates of the 30 06 Greek HXP (M2 ball) I could find. If Obama wants to whine about armor piercing, let him whine about that.

86 @72 That's "Across The Pacific." Original plot called for an attack on Pearl Harbor. They changed the screenplay; nobody'd believe that.

I don't throw "racism" around flagrantly, but boy that movie's got it. At least the Japanese are portrayed as sneaky and sinister, and not incompetent. Near-sightedness does rear its ugly head though. And Greenstreet, as usual, is thoroughly debased.

Snappy dialogue with "the Canadian gal." Bogart got that a lot.

104 A friend at the club is "Chief of Security" for a community college, and yes he gets mall-ninja jokes. But he's a hell of a shot, is a rated instructor, and teaches cops.

He gets to play with a lot of bulletproof vests, because they "age out" and have to be destroyed. He's happy to do that; hangs them up and shoots them. And he says, for just certain values of "armor piercing" meaning "will the bullet find its way through the Kevlar fibers," ordinary .22 cannot be beat. Gets 'em every time.

Now, it uses up most of its energy getting through there, of course. But once you're changing the rules and definitions, hang on to your goodies. Storm's comin'.

123 #19, the Civil War ordnance officers manuals, the 1861 Union and 1863 Confederate versions, are both online as .pdfs. Everything from how to set up a powder works to how to cast cannon. Download and print unless you can find a hard copy reprinted somewhere.

#20, no, it is simply Ammunition, Ball, M855. The AP load for the 5.56mm is the VERY rare (as in I have never actually seen it) M995.

#41/52, actually the greentip name for M855 is from the paint on the tip. See, we alone of the NATO allies used an earlier version of 5.56mm, the 55 grain M193. NATO jumped in with the 62 grain Belgian designed SS109, which we type-classed as the 855.

Since the old short 55 grain loads didn't do well in 1:7 twist SAW and M16A2 barrels and vice versa (Jesus, try putting 855 through an A1, it looks like a shotgun pattern), the Ordnance geniuses said paint the tips as was already done for tracer or whatever.

NATO SS109 isn't painted. The British and German stuff I have fired is plain old copper, them not having a legacy stash of other 5.56mm.

#63, most general officers stuck their 1903s in a footlocker or sock drawer and carried a 1911 if they bothered arming themselves at all. Of course Jim Gavin hauled a Garand around, but he was still jumping out of airplanes leading his division up front.

These days general officers have to pay for their own presentation M9s, and neither general I know personally bothered. Neither's wife would let him =)

135 Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword....wait there's even more Now what if i told you there was a simple Wordpress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That's right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin
