54 I cannot remember which DVD it's on, but we have one of the Trek movies that has a round table chat thingy with Shat, Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, and Jonathan Frakes in the extras section. It was pretty neat. Nimoy and Stewart were both really, really funny and remarkably kinda normal. Shatner was his usual self. Frakes seemed honestly kinda nervous to be on the same stage as Shatner and Nimoy.

222 Nimoy got much better as an actor as he went along. He didn't spring onto the acting scene fully formed, per se. He was on record as saying that at one point he had to support himself as an acting teacher and driving a cab. I've seen an early performance of his, pre-"Trek," on "Perry Mason," and another on "Man from U.N.C.L.E.," and with both you could be forgiven for thinking he'd never be a star.

Then came "Star Trek."

What he, and occasional co-star Mark Lenard, gave us with their alien characters was a strong impression of superb intellectuality holding emotion at bay. So many of the actors who followed them playing Vulcans seemed unconvincing, except for Tim Russ as Tuvok on "Voyager." Nimoy brought some of that same flavor to a role as a Chinese spy, impersonated by his character Paris, on "Mission: Impossible." The character was impressive.

On top of that Nimoy directed the 3rd "Trek" film, and did a fine job.

The stories and comments on Yahoo! indicate he was a gentleman in private life as well. R.I.P., Mr. Nimoy. When I get to the Happy Hunting Grounds, I'll look you up, along with Robert Culp. I'll bet you'll have some real stories to tell.

My mom smoked for 25 years and quit in the late 60s, and she has COPD. Now, that could be the new catch-all phrase for "you're old and your health isn't the best any more, but we don't know what precisely it is so it must be COPD".

Latest iteration for Mom is that her breathing problems are more heart related than lung, so I'm thinking it's more of a catch-all.

332 My favorite exchange from the TV series, involving Spock:

Multi-powered alien Trelane, the "Squire" of Gothos, has popped up on the bridge, upset because Spock grabbed Kirk and the landing party via transporter.

Trelane: Who is this Mister Spock who snatched you away from me?

Spock (rising): I am Spock.

Trelane: Ohhh. Not quite human, is he?

Spock: My father was a native of the planet Vulcan.

Trelane: Oh? And are its natives predatory?

Spock (levelly): Not generally. But there have been . . . exceptions.

I know in the back of my mind that, being a part of the "arts" the extreme likelihood is that they are that way, but I just don't want to know about it. I wish more of them would keep their mouths shut. It ruins the whole entertainment experience when the dude on screen is no longer Character X, but is *that* idiot jerkoff who hates everything I stand for. 410 >I'm not picking on you specifically, but damn, all this nanny-state hectoring about people's pleasurable habits has made people really lose sight of the fact that meatsacks are unreliable and sometimes shit just happens. Non-smokers can lung diseases

This. A thousand times, *this*. My wife never smoked, but her uterine cancer metastasized before it was discovered (her gynecologist probably misdiagnosed it as a fibroid), and guess where it wound up? She passed when the damn cancer had pretty much eaten up her lungs, leaving her unable to breathe. I'd think there aren't much worse ways to go, and it was slow: maybe 2-3 months from "I need to start lugging an oxygen bottle around" to the end.

@178 Did Spock have a first name?

He did have a first name. In
One episode, I forget which one, someone maybe Nurse Chapel, asked him
what it was and Spock said "you Couldn't pronounce it."

I think his mother, played by Jane Wyatt, had a similar line when asked about Vulcan names. Something like "Can you pronounce his [Spock's father's] name?" "After a fashion, and after many years of practice."

413 Watching Mirror Universe eps in memoriam, starting with "In a Mirror, Darkly". If I recall, fandom space/time continuity is maintained by having one of the shipboard Vulcans sport a goatee.

414 11, 317 I'm with 89. He died because it was his time to go. If you really want to freak out see Louise Hay. She implies Spock died because he was "tired of life". :-)

416 Love all you smart alecks. Have been utterly devastated by this all morning, so the laughs are very welcome.

Lung cancer is horrific and he's now in a better place, reunited with Kelley and Doohan. Such a renaissance man, always respected the show that gave him his break, and the fans, but went on and did other equally interesting things. Classy man, will be greatly missed. And who is going to temper the Shatner/rest of the cast spats now?

417 >>> If Spock would have interacted more with his Romulan neighbors he probably would have lived longer.

Any attacks by Romulans are just random occurences, and we probably are to blame. Because the Crusades.

421 Hey 416, it was inoperable chronic obstruction inside his heart organ -- maybe it was jammed up with tribbles or alfs or too many LLAPs or something, but regardless: not "lung cancer".

Guy Fleegman: Jason, are we doing episode 81 or not?
Jason Nesmith: It's a rough plan, Guy, what does it matter if we're doing episode 81 or not?
Guy Fleegman: BECAUSE I DIED... IN EPISODE 81!

Guy Fleegman: I changed my mind. I wanna go back.
Sir Alexander Dane: After the fuss you made about getting left behind?
Guy Fleegman: Yeah, but that's when I thought I was the crewman that stays on the ship, and something is up there, and it kills me. But now I'm thinking I'm the guy who gets killed by some monster five minutes after we land on the planet.
Jason Nesmith: You're not gonna die on the planet, Guy.
Guy Fleegman: I'm not? Then what's my last name?
Jason Nesmith: It's, uh, uh - -I don't know.
Guy Fleegman: Nobody knows. Do you know why? Because my character isn't important enough for a last name, because I'm gonna die five minutes in.
Gwen DeMarco: Guy, you have a last name.
Guy Fleegman: DO I? DO I? For all you know, I'm "Crewman Number Six"! Mommy... mommy...
Sir Alexander Dane: Are we there yet?

423 Hey 178 and 411: it was S'chn T'gai.

S'chn T'gai Spock. Sounds like it's spelled.

Source: To your credit 411, you got the right TOS episode, but you failed to follow-up on the dead treefall. Spock's first name - or first and second name -- WTF knows, it's a friggin' FICTIONAL CHARACTER FFS -- were post-revealed in the TOS series novel titled "Ishmael", as in the name of the guy in the book about the humongous albino sperm whale with the massive wang.

And that last ref holds the clue to pronouncing Spock's first (or first&second) name (s): it's exactly what a sperm whale with a massive chunk says when he tries it out on a too-less-than-massive female, followed by JFC, now I'm gonna need reconstructive boner surgery.

Fun fact: male sperm whales don't have boners. They have dicks, no penis bone inside, and when a male spermer gets all romantic, it doesn't turn into a boner from being engorged with blood that orders and rigidifies the tool's collagen, but instead lengthens and unfurls and slithers out in search of the female's happy zone like an extra long piece of hollowed-out spaghetti. If it got rigid like when a human gets happy, given we're talking animals weighing up to 60 tons slip-sliding around in wavy water, the thing'd break.
