You don't have them because the javascript in charge of comments strips them out.
Chrome will let you have ampersands natively (I guess the script doesn't work with input from Chrome?), and in FireFox (or PaleMoon, which is the same thing, but not evil) you can download the NoScript add-on (which, consequently, will also speed up the HQ significantly), and that will let you use them again.

This is a statement that kinda bugs me. The Republicans didn't "turn" on Nixon, so much as they found his activities during the Watergate mess indefensible. His "dibbling and dabbling, shillying and shallying" (to quote my own hero, Barry Goldwater) was dishonest and self-serving. The man lied, repeatedly, simply because he wanted to remain in power.
Again and always, he was a complete amateur at the Game of Lies compared to Choom Boy, and his motives were pure by comparison. Nixon didn't want to destroy the country; he wanted to lead it.
There was a time when the majority of both parties in Congress was made up of patriotic, honorable and reasonably honest people. It didn't end all that many years ago, but it sure as hell bears little relation to0 what we have now.

For years I regularly voted against some of them, mainly Democrats, because I opposed their policies. But I felt that many of those were sincere, if hugely misguided and way off-base.

The area controlled by the United States of America is simply too large for a single Federal Republic. Because it is functionally impossible for a normal person of normal means in (say) Texas, or Arizona, or Washington (the state), or Montana to take time off to go to the capitol just to get some face-time with his or her representative (let alone senator), those people are at a disadvantage when it comes to having their views represented.
While communication improvements such as phone, email, and even twitter have mitigated this to some extent, the very fact that most humans believe (of people they only speak to on the phone or (worse) converse with via email or twitter) "those aren't really people," it does not -and cannot- fix the issue.
Anyone see any major holes in that?

So if he sees my name on an email, or a fax or letter, or whatever, he's going to think "Who's this?" and promptly forget my position.
Now, I'm not letting voters off the hook here. Voters need to be much more active in conversing with their Representatives. But even if they were- at the current moment- I do not believe it would make much difference.

But, again, access remains an issue.
I'm not even blaming the representatives. I'm not. You work in one place, it's very hard to be in more than one place at once.
And, I'll further state, that I don't think there's a whole lot of difference at the moment, because I don't think even the reps in VA or MA are being particularly diligent in listening to their constituents.
But even if they were, if everyone were as fully involved in that sort of two-way communication as they could be, a person in, say, El Paso would have less access to his representative than someone in New York or Pennsylvania.

I completely agree with your basic principle, just not with the solution.
To me the solution is electing people who listen.
And then term limiting them.
I used to think that term limits were a bad idea because the federal govt is complex and you needed to be around a while to learn all the pressure points. We could eliminate 20 federal cabinet level agencies tomorrow and it would still be too complex.
But now....now I'm of the opinion that term limits are a great idea because rookies every two years sure as shit can't do any worse than the current clusterfuck known as the U.S. Congress.

I think it's ridiculous to discuss what gender you think you are. There might be people who at birth are hermaphrodites but that's a small number. Unless you really want to wear women's clothes in public why would you need a sex change. Couldn't you feel comfortable enough in your own skin that if you felt more nurturing than other males you just accept that. or if you only liked to wear pants and loved playing softball that you were still a woman? I knew of a guy-very bright, very articulate, and had some high paying job and position. He spent lots of money becoming a woman and then lived with another woman. I never could wrap my mind around why the need to do that. Im phrasing this badly but if seems to me a shame that you can't be your own person and still keep the sex organs you were born with.

School board meetings,local candidates--it begins at this level. Get this right and the state and national part is so much easier.
