So This Will Be The Next Five Days' Hysteria

Scott Walker gave a bad answer.

Asked about ISIS, Walker responded, "If i can take on 100,000 protesters, I can do the same across the globe."

It's a dumb answer for the reasons Geraghty elucidates, though I don't know if I'd call it a "terrible" answer. I'd say Obama's, Earnest's, and Psaki's calculated and coordinated statements that Adaly Coulibaly gunned down five Jews "randomly" was a terrible answer. This one is just dopey.

I'm not really bothered by the dopiness of the answer -- I say dopey things too, and so do you, and so does President 57 Corpse-Mens.

It's more that I'm bothered at the opportunity lost. Every time one opens his mouth, one can say something interesting, insightful, stirring, or politically shrewd, or one can say something dopey, forgettable, or pointless.

It's not that I'm bothered that this statement is in the latter category so much as I'm bothered it's not in the first category.

As a one-time Rick Perry super-fan, I am of a mind that a candidate only gets a couple of chances to make a First impression. And failing to impress is failing.

Even in professional life, which (let's be honest) our political-media circus has not been since Pre-Lewinsky times (or even Nixon on Laugh-In). Saying it's better to make these mistakes now assumes that because he makes them now, he won't make them later. It doesn't follow.

The media was doing everything it could to prop up Newt in 2012 to make our primary as nasty as possible, that's why he looked "good" all the time.

When he was Speaker, the Press destroyed him.

It's a lot like McCain, as long as he was the media's useful idiot, he got the kid glove treatment. When he was up against Obama, suddenly he was a crazy war monger.

I agree though that Walker needs to get better at dealing with the media and NOT answering their questions would really help.

Posted by: mynewhandle at February 26, 2015 06:03 PM (AkOaV)

86 So the solution is to not say anything, ever, because pretty much anything can be spun into anything in these days where words mean both nothing and everything simultaneously depending on which media is after you.

If a conservative says nothing, he's guilty of something. If a conservative says anything, he's guilty of something.

Eff that noise. Say what you mean, mean what you say, (however "inarticulately" as defined by others who have a rulebook they make up as they go along) and charge full steam ahead. Talk to the people and ignore the gatekeepers. They're going to say what they're going to say no matter what. But keep talking to the people like you're one of 'em.

I like the answer. The Wisconsin public employee unionistas are a formidable foe in their neck of the woods with a record for ruthlessness. Despite that, Walker courageously stood his ground against them demonstrating a great commitment to principle in doing so.

Is the Wisconsin SEIU like ISIS? Not so far as I know, (H/T: Hillary) but they don't exactly play bean bag either. The easiest thing for Walker to have done after being elected was to buy himself some peace, abandon his principles, betray HIS backers, and walk back the union reforms he campaigned on.

Dealing with a hundred thousand domestic protesters who didn't require lethal force is one thing. Dealing with foreign Islamic State fanatics who will without question require lethal force is quite another thing.

It would have been better, as an answer, to simply mock Obama policy prescriptions like "jobs for jihadis" and say, "We certainly would not be continuing that sort of nonsense in a Walker administration, next question."

Posted by: torquewrench at February 26, 2015 06:17 PM (noWW6)

Wow, that's, sort of, uniformed.

The union goons bussed in folks to terrorize any and everyone who was near the downtown in Madison for over eight months. They occupied the Capitol Building illegally, defacing the marble and crapping in the hallways, banging drums and chanting loudly using foul language all day and all night. They chased away workers, elected politicians, tourists and citizens and prevented any and all work of the government for weeks on end.

But hey, they weren't "terrorists" because they didn't detonate themselves. They just vandalized and harassed and made themselves odious to everyone. And they made death threats to not only Gov. Walker, but to every elected official with an R behind his or her name.

Yeah, I think he dealt with them as they deserved to be dealt with, except that he was patient enough to not arrest each and every one of them or chase them away with a water cannon.

Of course they will. They do it to every Republican and have for decades. Not news.

But Walker needs to know that and be prepared with something better than comparing ISIS to union bosses. I'm not running for President but I think I would have been ready with something a little more on point like

"We need to have a much more aggressive policy in dealing with a radical Islamist terror organization that is slaughtering innocent men, women and children than the passive "lead from behind" behind policy of the Obama administration that has allowed terrorists to take over large swathes of the middle east and threatens to destabilize the region. That's the idea: make fun of them. Alinsky was right; any tactic that your base enjoys is a good tactic, and superficially good-natured ridicule that amuses your audience is deadly, and forges a bond between you and your audience.

I inadvertently learned to do this in lecturing. Not ridiculing anybody or anything, but during the lecture, as such occurred to me, spontaneously making light-hearted jokes or references as asides. Nothing gets an audience in your pocket faster. Once they're laughing, you've got 'em.

It's baked into the cake. If Rand Paul gets the nomination (please no) he will be accused of being a blood thirsty war monger. It's what the left does.

But right now public opinion has actually got the American people supporting sending ground troops back into Iraq. Obama is getting rightfully crushed on this issue. So play to it.

Posted by: navybrat at February 26, 2015 06:57 PM (JgC5a)

348 Another trick in an adversarial context: lay traps for your opponent, for example, by purposely giving a weakish answer to a question, and doing so in a diffident manner that implies weakness and uncertainty, and invites a follow-up question on the same topic, which you then hit out of the park.

Think putting a lousy weak swing on a first-pitch curveball, then sitting on the curveball thereafter, because you're almost certain to get it.

My metaphor for this is a toreador placing his cape right in front of a brick wall. "C'mon, toro, is that all you've got?" Toro charges, the toreador whisks away the cape, toro smashes headfirst into the brick wall.

Yeah, I know. I'm a piece of work.

The nice about this is that after you've done this (and I've done it both the forensic and athletic contexts), your opponent never knows for sure whether he's being played again, and therefore he has to be a bit tentative ... just in case.

This.

Yeah - the statement was not well crafted. But let's not get the vapors over it. There's still a long time before we get to the primaries, and this will be down the memory hole soon. Plus the low info turd voters are NOT paying attention right now. Let's learn from it and move on.

And I hope this doesn't start him down the road of bothering to play defense. That's useless - every word you spend defending yourself is wasted. Look at the absolutely moronic statements that Biden made virtually every day. Look at the nonsense Obumbles spews. Nobody cares. The objective is to find the popular parts of the Right's message (they DO still exist - just none of the GOP turds know how to find or communicate them), hammer the message home every day ruthlessly with endless repetition, and beat the message into the bonehead LIVs. Mix hard core negative attacks with upbeat hopeful alternatives.

Never defend - it looks weak. Only attack, all the time. You're not going to win over libtards - and the mush-headed middle can't pay attention to details or nuance. The idiots in the "undecided" category ARE seeing that shit's falling apart. We're not the only ones who get it. But they haven't been given a stark choice. Given them an alternative that looks DIFFERENT from what they've been force fed. Give them some hope of a grown up taking the reins. So far, it looks like Walker is the ONLY hope.

420 Jay Geuvera, you need to submit an application to become Walker's speechwriter. Seriously.

Thanks, Rick. I told you I'm a piece of work! Actually, I'd love to help out with speechwriting, if the opportunity to do so should arise.

Years of single-handedly debating groups of liberal colleagues, oftentimes in public venues, sharpened the skills to the point where few were willing to try their luck.

424 Just a bit of a clarification. I don't think the question to Walker was meant as a 'gotcha'. It came from a CPAC moderator not from a reporter.

425 So Geraghty gets the vapors over Walker's answer and just HAS to dash off a condemnation, but the FCC votes 3-2 to assign itself dominion over the Internet in a money/power grab and he can't even be bothered to say "that's awful?"

It's also funny that, just Monday, Geraghty said this:

Republicans should be considerably concerned by this media environment; the press is desperately hungry for material to reinforce the Republicans-as-villains storyline, and will do anything they can to turn an uttered word into a seven-day story.

So looks like Geraghty is doing his part to reinforce that media environment he criticized just a few days ago.

Well, yeah...it's a legitimate question, for someone who is running for President.

But remember, there are supporters of other candidates at CPAC, who would like to see Walker knocked out of the running.
So 'gotcha' questions come from both the left and the right.

437 Personally, it wouldn't bother me at all if conservative politicians didn't take any questions from reporters. We all know the reporters are not interested in answers, other than as ammo to destroy said politician. We also all know that the same tactics will never be used against any Democrat.

Treat reporters as what they are--the Enemy.

Posted by: Null at February 26, 2015 07:47 PM (xjpRj)

438 Mr. Walker what you need is somebody out front to vet these questions from the media, and he's a minority too.

What does he look like? He's short. Yes I said he is short...and hairy too.

How would he do his job? Any report that asks a stupid question he pees in their shoes. Yes, Pees. In. Shoe.
He has a really big bladder for his size.

For really stupid and gotcha questions he gnaws their ankle off. Yes right off. What about the women reporters? Of course not Sir he isn't a savage. If they are good looking he *coughhumpscough* their leg. Won't the Feminist complain? Only the ugly ones...he really does have a way with women.
The best part...He likes to be paid in Valurite and Hobo pelts.

Yes Sir I will contact him right away. Guys send up the flaming skull.

439 So the unions terrorized the people of WI for weeks and he cannot say they are terrorists. I see that only Democrats can call conservative Americans in the TEA Party terrorists, nice double standard the leftists have there and the wincing of the "right" shows how shell shocked they are into be "above it all". Yep, lets just keep kicked in the teeth and begging for implants to be kicked again.

Yeah, it's funny how it's only a stupid answer when the occasional conservative Republican (which should be considered an endangered spe cies) gives it.

445 Geraghty needs to get over it. It was a perfectly understandable statement in context. Even out of context it's pretty obvious what he meant.

Honestly, when you're receiving daily death threats against yourself and your family, what the hell is the difference. If American citizens want to behave like terrorists, then call them the same.

Posted by: trumpetdaddy at February 26, 2015 08:40 PM (ljZD2)

449 I took it to mean that he'd handled massive protests before and that he could again handle the inevitable massive protests if he were to order decisive military action against ISIS as president.

He's a republican; if a legion of blood-crazed demons erupted from a fissure in the earth for all the world to see (which, for all intents and purposes, has actually happened), there'd be protests if he took military action against him.

Anyway, that's how I took it. But I never clicked the link either. My shadow priest needs better gear.

454 It's not dopey or terrible. Union thugs and Islamic thugs are cut from the same cloth. They are feral, sociopathic, stupid creatures who cannot think past their immediate selfish interests and insecurities. They're rabid animals who need to be put down, not consoled and indulged.

Posted by: Kanye East at February 27, 2015 11:04 AM (xkSSa)

455 So, how wrong was he?
Lets play a game... We can call it "Union protesters, or ISIS?"

One group has been repeatedly threatening to kill Walker's kids for Walker not agreeing with them for 3 years.
Union protesters, or ISIS?

Who declared they wanted to "gut his wife like a deer" because he wouldn't do as they demanded?
Union protesters, or ISIS?

Who, after threatening his family; showed up at his parents house to stir up trouble and violence?
Union protesters, or ISIS?

Oh, ALL the violence and violent threats he's faced for 3 years have come from Union protesters?

Clearly he owes an apology... TO ISIS. They never once threatened his family; it's horrible to lump them in with the lunatics who keep showing their desire to kill him and his family for his thoughts.

Was that the point? No?

Oh, the point was Union protesters, consonantly calling for your death, with a history of violent action; are what the left calls "peaceful" and can't be compared to anyone violent while they're openly calling for your death?

That point seems stupid to me. I suspect it might even seem stupid to the left; but it's for partisan political gain so they push it anyhow.

Why would I give that a second thought, much less assign it credibility?

Posted by: gekkobear at February 27, 2015 11:47 AM (y9cfQ)

456
Yes, Walker's comparison is so inappropriate.

One group is a bunch of stop-at-nothing extremists who threaten violence, terrorize communities, attack Christians and other people of faith, and use social media to advance a horrible anti-American agenda.

And the other group is called ISIS.

457 "439
So the unions terrorized the people of WI for weeks and he cannot say they are terrorists."

Correct: Comparisons like that are a one-way street.

Democrats and the left call righties terrorists all the time. Blame 'religious fundamentalism' for violence, as if the Amish are a latent terrorist threat. They use terms like "Tea-liban" and Rethuglican and Republikkkan all the time.

the shoe is never supposed to be on the other foot.
