Sources Near Jeb Bush Say He's "Evolving" On Gay Marriage And Might Just Embrace It

...should the Supreme Court make it the law of the land in June, which they, you know, probably will.

So not a "moderate" Republican but a liberal one. Ah, whatever, that's fine. I suppose I should credit him, at least, for being somewhat honest about it.

Well, if the party is craving a liberal candidate, he would be a decent choice.

I'm not craving that but I'm sure the various Wall Streeters -- again, let me note they all live in New York City and that one's politics are substantially formed by the culture one lives in -- are all for a Republican Party which is liberal in every single way except corporate tax rates and top personal marginal rates.

It seems to me one of the many problems we have is that the actual conservatives in the Republican party aren't ready to fight tooth and nail against the establishment.

For example, were I a House conservative leader I would let Boehner know that any surrender on Obama's amnesty would lead to a vote on a minimum wage hike, and something to put real teeth into the nominal legal provision that H1B employees have to be paid the prevailing wage of native born employees.

If the Chamber of Commerce types think they'll get rich off killing wages via immigration let's make sure they understand they won't.

Fiscally, it would seem so at first blush. Socially, no.

However, this is a common fallacy. Saying "who cares, do what you want with your own life" means "leftist you take control." They don't just want to be left to do what they want with their own lives, that's the entire problem here. You can pretend you're married all you want. But when you demand businesses and government recognize it and give you benefits, tax breaks, etc, then it becomes a fiscal issue.

And, although its a longer discussion, if you surrender either fiscal or social side of conservatism, eventually you slide away from the side you held to. If you're socially conservative but not fiscally, eventually you become socially leftist as a society and often an individual. Same with the opposite.

There is a lot of truth in that. The GOP could get a lot of Democrat support for removing Civil Service protection from a lot of government employees because the Democrats are always looking for government goodies to give out to their supporters. The top levels of government departments are always political appointees. The next level down are usually career civil service employees who are almost always life long Democrats and who frequently do everything that they can to obstruct their bosses and the President when there is a Republican in office.


My modest proposal would be to change the status of the next level down to also being political appointees without civil service protection. Democrats will go for this because it creates lots more political patronage jobs. Republicans ought to be enthusiastic about that because it means that the next Republican President will have a better chance of his policies actually being put into practice.

And I've tried to stay out this but: if you want this to go away get government out of marriage. No differing tax rates for married v. single, (btw, get rid of dependent child and mortgage interest deductions too, but that's a tangent), and let inheritance and hospital visiting privileges be matters of contract.

If the government is out of it you can call marriage "persimmon" or anything else you want, you can call gay marriage "turnips" or an "abomination" and it won't affect anything.

But we're not going to get government out of marriage because government is about coercion and it wants to punish you for renting or being single.

Even if we could, we shouldn't.

Society (especially it's mores and morals) and Government are symbiotic. The courser the culture gets, the worse the government gets, and they feed into each other in a vicious spiral.

The nuclear family- Mom, Dad, Little Nellie, and Little Jim- are the basic unit of Society. It is in family where we (in theory) first learn to sublimate our own needs and desires for others. It is in family where we first learn that sacrifice of things I want for someone else's good can lead to good things for me. It is in family where we learn cooperation, and reciprocity, and a whole host of things that are necessary for our society to function.

A society which does not encourage this arrangement is not taking care of its own health. A society which actively degrades this arrangement- as our current society has been since at least the 60s- is one which is committing a slow suicide.

Government needs to be in the marriage business because so much is tied up with marriage from a civil standpoint. Further, Government needs to support "traditional" (I will say: "real") marriage because supporting any other type of marriage is detrimental to the concept of the nuclear family.

Already gay marriage is essentially legal. I really see very little difference to "gay couple living together" and "gay couple living together with government piece of paper".

Please give me the playbook on how we repeal gay marriage when it becomes legal, gay marriages are on the books, and the public supports it?

My problem with gay marriage is I think the people who pushed it are really only invested in the idea of a middle finger to religion. But marriage has always been a religious institution.

Pretty much any legal issue is a moral issue. The law against murder is a moral issue. That's the problem I have with libertarians and their "get the gov't out of morality" nonsense. The areas where they still want the gov't involved all involve moral questions.
