Less Than Half of Americans Say Obama "Loves Americans"

So let's rush to endorse the Progressive Position on this, because even though that position only attracts 47% -- yes, The Forty Seven Percent, none of whom will ever vote for us -- it's imperative that we flatter the sensibilities of Progressives and the people Matt K. Lewis hopes to work for one day because while they're not a majority, they're simply Better People and their beliefs are therefore Better Beliefs. *

Democrats are convinced he does love his country (85 percent of those surveyed answered yes in the poll), while Republicans (69 percent no) are skeptical. Independents break in the president’s favor by only 42 percent to 38 percent. Nationally, only 47 percent of people think the nation’s leader loves America while 35 percent do not.

My position on this is a little Nuanced, so Marie Harf might appreciate this.

I don't think "Obama doesn't love America" is slogan we can affirmatively run on in the sense that we take this motto to market and tell people "Vote for us; look at this awesome thing we're saying."

I think swing voters fancy themselves as being Above such Personalized Politics. They like to think of themselves as Voting on the Issues, not on the People, and they like to think that all these people who talk about Specific People in politics are A Little Strange and Not Like Us.

Of course, the reality is this: Most of these people don't talk about Specific People in politics because they don't know the names of Specific People in politics. That is, they are ignorant, but like all ignorant people, they like to pretend their Not Knowing Th9ngs is somehow Noble and Better Than Knowing Things.

Their position is also incoherent because "Voting on the Issues" and not Voting on People means voting on ideology, and they like to think of themselves as Definitely Not Ideological Like Those Partisan Crazies Who Know the Names of People in Government. Instead they like to think of themselves as Practical, Centered, Normal Non-Crazy People Who Vote Neither On Personality Nor Ideology But Whatever Criterion Remains, Which Is Actually "Practically No Information At All But Instead an Ignorant Gauze of Some Personal Feeling and Some Vague and Unexamined Ideological Impulse."

In other words, they're dumb, lazy, self-aggrandizing and self-deluding, like most Americans.

But even so, the way it is is just the way it is, and we cannot change this. We can grumble about it, but we have to acknowledge this as the Governing Reality: These idiots, who actually vote a lot more on Personal Attacks than they are capable of comprehending, will scream "I don't want to hear your Personal Attacks, you Partisan!" if you get too loud and too forward leaning with this "Obama doesn't love his country" crap accurate assessment.

On the other hand -- and this is what Matt K. Lewis and all the other Automatic and Thoughtless Defenders of the Idiot Professional Republican Class don't comprehend -- is just as these people look down on what they see as Undue Animosity towards a political figure, They are likewise put off by -- and consider to be "crazy" and Not Like us -- what appears to be an Undue Adoration of a political figure.

And that's what the left's screaming sounds like. "Oh my God, how dare you say that about President Precious Perfect!!!"

You think independent swing voters agree with that? No, of course not, only highly partisan ideologically-progressive committed Democrats, such as you may find in the media, agree with that proposition, or, as the French would say, propo.

Shut up Ekdahl

If they cared that much about defending the Personal Honor of President Precious Perfect, they'd be partisan Democrats, not these crucial White Educated Upper Middle Class Independents in Bucks County, PA I keep hearing so much about.

Here is my belief: The kind of people we're talking about, the "persuadable" but not party-committed, are the sort of people who say things like this:

"Eh, they're all jerks"

"Oh all of them are assholes, one more corrupt than the next."

"None of them give a shit about anything more than winning their next election."

All things, by the way, that are 100% correct, which is something I'm just learning from the Dummies at this late date and at some great psychic cost.

But what this sort of person is not going to say is, "They said the guy who's always knocking America doesn't love America? Well how dare they! I super-love Obama and I won't tolerate that kind of incivility towards our Dear Leader!"

Thus, we hardly need to vouch for Obama's country-loving or Christianity. No, I don't think we should make this any kind of a central pillar of our politics (and maybe this is Matt K. Lewis', and Ross Douthat's, real point), but neither do I think we have to run from it aggressively.

The persuadable non-partisan thinks All These Guys are Assholes. Including Obama -- who, in case the very smart plugged-in-and-connected Political Class hasn't noticed, has been underwater on his personal favorability for ages. Such people will not be Unduly Scandalized to hear that Obama, who has carefully constructed a political identity of the disaffected cosmopolitan who is Brave Enough To Tell Americans They Suck, does not love America.

They know he doesn't. Maybe they don't want people to say it too loud Because Racism and If You Don't Have Anything Nice To Say, but they're also not committed to this notion that Obama does love America.

Obama lives in a bubble. So do Professional Republicans. (So do I, for that matter.)

We should not mistake The Bubble for The Sky. It is not The Sky.

The Bubble is a distorted and oily view of the world created by distorted and oily people. Most of these people are progressives and Democratic partisans and to a lesser extent Professional Republicans who have learned to accept The Bubble as The Sky because all they do all day is talk to progressives and Democratic partisans, such as their bosses, roommates, side-pieces and sundry other illicit sex partners.

We must never forget that there is a real Sky beyond the oily rainbows of The Bubble, and that it looks a lot different.

* And bear in mind this number is likely inflated because it's the Socially Favored Thing to Claim.

I wonder how this is possible. Do they have such blinders on as to be immune to the fact that he's always talking down to all of us?

Some reasonable percentage of Democrats must be Christian, or actively believe that American Exceptionalism is a trait to be cherished and is not in fact on a par with Greek Exceptionalism.

This man grew up largely outside of America, and even when living on a rock in the ocean that America stole he didn't do American things. He didn't play little league, he wasn't a Boy Scout, he didn't learn that America is an ideal.

Don't Democrats resent being lectured to about their high horse?

When he says something, ask yourself, is it something that someone who loves America would say, or something someone who hates America would say (and "tough love" in the sense of, I just want you to be better, does not count). When he does something, ask yourself, is it something someone who loves his country would do, or is it something someone who hates his country would do?

It really doesn't matter. Two thirds of Americans don't want amnesty, yet both parties are actively working to undermine the will of the supermajority.

You don't seem to understand. There is a narrative, and a plan, and you will be forced to accept it. Your votes don't matter, your desires don't matter, and the fact that you can argue against the narrative is just a short term weakness in the current system which will soon be rectified.

89 In what way is the JEF *not* the personification of The Manchurian Candidate?

His every action is against America and Americans.

But, the rebellion would be misdirected, if it were to be loosed against him.

The Media is the real Enemy Within. And right behind them, the permanent bureaucracy.

Take care of those two elements first, and everything else gets a whole lot easier.

Doesn't have to be LIB, either. Just keep harvesting the Brian Williamses, over and over and over again. As for the bureaucrats? I'm open to suggestions.

97 Anyone remember when they had bumper stickers that said "AMERICA LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT"

Naturally, the leftards demeaned that statement and associated it with knuckle-dragging, sister-humping Bible-thumpers on the Right.

Actually that notion goes back to Socrates and is a very mature way to view countries or states. An adult citizen owes it to him or herself to live in a place that best reflects his or her worldview. To do otherwise is a rather large insult to the people who established said country or state.

103 If you think of the democrats as a tribe and how tribes function it helps understand the 'why' of what they do.
***
I see organized crime as the better model.

The Democrats exist to take money from the productive class as a protection money. They see the government, rightly, as the most effective way to squeeze us.

Obama is the Don, and the other members of the mob aren't going to challenge him unless they think they could take his position and come out personally better for it.

He is doing VERY well for them so they won't. And getting them to see he is a corrupt SOB isn't going to help...they already know that and in fact that is WHY they support him.

Now, the LIVs are different. They still think of the government as being there "to help". If there was an opposition party to the Democrats they would point out that is pretty much the opposite of what the modern government does...

Their position is also incoherent because "Voting on the Issues" and not Voting on People means voting on ideology,
and they like to think of themselves as Definitely Not Ideological Like
Those Partisan Crazies Who Know the Names of People in Government.
Instead they like to think of themselves as Practical, Centered, Normal
Non-Crazy People Who Vote Neither On Personality Nor Ideology But
Whatever Criterion Remains, Which Is Actually "Practically No
Information At All But Instead an Ignorant Gauze of Some Personal
Feeling and Some Vague and Unexamined Ideological Impulse."

Wiki:

"Jarrett was born in Shiraz, Iran, to American parents James E. Bowman and Barbara Taylor Bowman. One of her maternal great-grandfathers, Robert Robinson Taylor, was an architect who is sometimes cited as the first accredited African American architect.
Her father, a pathologist and geneticist, ran a hospital for children in Shiraz in 1956, as part of a program where American physicians and agricultural experts sought to help communitize developing countries' health and farming efforts. When she was 5, the family moved to London for one year, later moving to Chicago in 1963. Her parents were both African-American; on the television series Finding Your Roots, genealogical research and DNA testing indicated that Jarrett also has French, Scottish, and Native American ancestry"

I think this sort of thing can lead to a preference cascade, just as the kid proclaiming the emperor had no clothes got others to admit the same.

Because if you accept that Obama doesn't love America, it cast his presidency in a completely different light. This leads to re-interpreting events and actions.

It removes the benefit of the doubt he is ALWAYS granted by LIVs - because you don't want to be called a racist, and you sure as hell don't want to consider his actions don't have America's best interests at heart. That might force you to leave the middle ground and actually take a side *shivers*.

Yes, Obama and the Progs have screwed up every alliance we have, grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory in Afghasistan and Iraq, reset Russian relations back thirty-five years and are busy trying to surrender to Iran. All of those things are true.

But if the economy was growing and Americans were working, instead of the disaster the Obama regulatory regime has yielded, we'd laugh off some of these challenges and beat back the remainder.

Instead we seem beset on all sides, and it's all because of the Progressive economy. Fix that, and everything else seems easier.

197 I enjoyed the post ace, even though not sure I followed it completely.

But hate to say it, but I think all this "does he love America" stuff is ridiculous b.s. - as in, not material to anything in particular. Pretty much like the "is he a Muslim" nonsense.

Those who (apparently) have not spent any time inside the Beltway seem not to understand how many people believe many idiotic things - we're talking "high information" policy types.

Look at all of the massive splits in and defections from the Dems over policy issues. Oh, wait. That's right, there hasn't been any. That's because you don't have to hate America or be a Muslim to not have a clue about policy, whether domestic or foreign.

If this ridiculous, unfit, uninterestingaffirmative action empty suit in the Oval Office were an observant (fill in Christian flavor here) whose affection for the country was beyond doubt, he might still follow exactly the same policies, and have zillions of devout supporters among his ignorant and unintelligent followers. The bizarre prayer breakfast sort of stuff does confirm, as if that were needed, that this guy is an ignorant freak with a head filled with the most ridiculous leftist crap you'd find in any dorm social room in the 1960s.

It is not, however, a neccessary building block or pre-condition for 99% of his disastrous policies.

***
From what I've seen their specific shtick is to carefully consider the quotes/stories they fact check to advance their agenda.

So they'll take obviously fake stories/quotes about Obama and call them false which presents the illusion that similar damning ones are also false.

For example, if you look up Obama's 57 states quote you'll see that it is labelled "mixture".

He said it...so why is it partially true? Because the claim that it was in reference to 57 Islamic states has no support. Why are these two items specifically combined? So they can call it "mixture".

LIVs have decided, consciously or not, that it is not worth their time to actually think about politics for more then the bare minimum they are forced to.

Interestingly, because there is really only one political party now - the government party - their analysis would appear to be correct.

I've been involved with elections and politics for... a while. And for the foreseeable future I don't see any political/electoral solutions to the mess we are in. I can easily see a President Jeb win in 2016 with both houses of congress and not a damn thing changing after his coming into office.

Nope. It's stupidity.

Ignorance is not knowing- specifically not being expected to know.

Just take a gander at the "opinions" of some the richest, most "accomplished" people in the country. Often as not, they're jaw-droppingly stupid and uninformed. Or not just stupid, but sort of demented and fanatical (Bloomberg and guns, Steyer and unhinged unscientific "environmentalism", etc.). Put Gates and Zuckerberg and (pick another tech tycoon) on a panel and have them discuss any serious public policy issue not immediately touching their business - wow, pathetic.

So no shock that average, "educated" people (esp. as that definition has been morphed downward and continues to be) are utterly incompetent citizens

Oh - and ace, I don't accept that I live in a bubble. Intelligent, critical thinking, logical people with experience and historical perspective never live in a bubble if they have access to information.

277 @231. I am building something. When it's done, I will try to sell it. Someone I met 18 years ago has convinced me that the problem is liberalism. I have convinced him that the key error is "rights". We hope that a more robust philosophy would tread responsibility as fundamental.

So-called "natural rights" would be a consequence of building the correct world-view based on responsibilities (and a lot more) rather than treating rights as fundamental. We would not replace the US constitution, which we view as an institution, which has suffered collateral damage from the programs of the Frankfurt school, Wilson, FDR, and others.

A capitalist philosophy.

281 America is a big thing with a lot of ideas. We don't particularly like the left activism of things that are supposed to be non-political like college professors and African American churches. Like it or not, those things are (now) America, and those are the things Obama loves.

The left turning this argument into a 'thing' is distraction and stupid. Like most things the left does.

Most
of the 47%* voted for Obama twice.

I
think there are a good number of them who, in the deep recesses of their
unexamined minds, doubt he loves the country as much as the average American,
but when forced to choose between stating that fact (and necessarily
internalizing that they exercised such poor judgment and discernment by voting
once or twice for him to lead the country) and remaining in their
faux-confident comfort place of "that non patriotic talk is just
silly", they choose the latter. The other choice hurts too much.

Republicans and conservatives need
to stop wringing their hands over these pointed criticisms of the President. It
is not hurting Republicans and may eventually cause some of those - who refuse
to pay attention for fear of realizing what a mistake they have made in
electing that guy - to actually examine how we got here. Certainly, taking a soft approach to the
President has not worked, IMHO.

Citizen X, that's disappointing to hear. I recorded that show but didn't watch it yet. It reminds me of something my grandpa used to talk about - when he was a young man living on the east side of Manhattan in the '30s and '40s, his congressman was an outright Communist named Vito Marcantonio. Decades later, Grandpa would still get pissed when talking about how so many of his paisanos in the neighborhood just loved Marcantonio just because of his ethnicity - "who cares if he's Italian, the sonofabitch was a Communist!"

Odd quirk of fate that 3 of 4 of my grandparents grew up in blue-collar immigrant households in NYC, which should have meant they were FDR worshipping Dems, yet they all despised the Democrat Party.

435 In after the troll.

Spot on, Ace. A legit opposition party would be motivated to defeat, not "work with" the other party - assuming it believed its own rhetoric about "we're good for America, they're bad for America." It would formulate its positions based on two factors, either/or: 1) where do we have public support and/or 2) where is the other party vulnerable? It would actively seek political advantage at every turn.

Instead, the Republicans want to "work with" a party that's core-rotten with anti-Western bomb-throwers and corrupt stooges. They self-censor their own efforts by looking at every issue through elite-tinged glasses. Two-thirds of the public opposes amnesty or ObamaCare? So what when the GOP leadership agrees with the one third.

There is no legitimate opposition party today because the leaders of the nominal opposition are part of the ruling monoculture and they've managed to kabuki their rank-and-file into keeping them in office despite not representing their views or working in their interests.

451 Ace, et al, thanks for the post re smoking.

I started working in restaurants when I was in 11 and soon realized that was the only "break" you got. Plus I liked that it was rebellious.

I once quit for more than two years but have been back smoking again. The truth, for me I think, is to stop drinking as well for that "quitting smoking" period because alcohol surely drives the connection hard (strangely not coffee) and weakens willpower.

A majority of Americans are against blanket amnesty, but they do favor a process where illegals can stay. Most Americans reject the open border globalist and the genocidal sectarian bigots.

Why don't you just leave the GOP if its not racist enough for you?

Two of the newest National Monuments remember remember the poor treatment of AA pullman workers and Japanese being interred in camps.

Please ad your own "Obama loves America" additions. I don't want to get on the "Wall of shame" and I'm thinking of doing a daily whiteboard sign thing at my house until someone vandalizes it. I could use some additional ideas.

Because "whoop[ing] the shit out of someone" is recognized in all 50 states as justified grounds for putting said person in the ground.

461 Gee, someone should tell Melissa Harris-Perry that Zimmerman shot Trayvon *because* he was receiving such a beat-down he feared for his life (and Trayvon saying he was gonna kill him didn't help). Does she have any concept of "cause" and "effect?" Neither Trayvon or Zimmerman acted admirably, but how else could this have ended once the physical altercation started? Zimmerman dead? Both so terribly injured they both collapse?

So may of our forebears were grabbed straight off the boat by Tammany Hall and told they "had" to register Democrat because the Republicans hated immigrants.

Like you, I'm proud that many of my ancestors didn't fall for it. My dad's family were staunch, staunch anti-Communists and some of them became elected officials in the Republican Party.

I obviously inherited my DNA from them!

Why do we still "respect Ramadan" in our rules of engagement in Afghnistan.??
