Jeb Bush Doesn't Seem To Think Much Of Americans

Everyone knows Jeb Bush is a big proponent of immigration and amnesty for illegal aliens (Well, not all of them. More on that in a bit). What's beginning to emerge though is a picture of a guy who not only thinks coming here illegally is "an act of love" but a necessary corrective for a failing society that needs to be remade in fundamental ways. Sound familiar?

That's not my spin, that's from noted Rightwing Nut Job, David Frum.

Both Jeb Bush and Barack Obama are men who have openly and publicly struggled with their ambivalence about their family inheritance. Both responded by leaving the place of their youth to create new identities for themselves: Barack Obama, as an organizer in the poor African-American neighborhoods of Chicago; Jeb Bush in Mexico, Venezuela, and at last in Cuban-influenced Miami. Both are men who have talked a great deal about the feeling of being “between two worlds”: Obama, in his famous autobiography; Bush, in his speeches. Both chose wives who would more deeply connect them to their new chosen identity. Both derived from their new identity a sharp critique of their nation as it is. Both have built their campaign for president upon a deep commitment to fundamental transformation of their nation into what they believe it should be.

...

"They’re more entrepreneurial, they set up more business, they buy more homes, they’re more family-oriented, they work in jobs that in many cases are jobs that have gone unfilled" (at 39:40)

"I think Detroit would do real well if we started repopulating it with young, aspirational people." (45:20)

"We have people that mope around thinking 'my life is bad, my children will not have the same opportunities that I had.' What a horrible notion in America, the most optimistic of places, and I think an economically driven immigration plan . . . would lift our spirits up dramatically." (19:25)

"The one way that we can rebuild the demographic pyramid is to fix a broken immigration system. . . . If we do this, we will rebuild our country in a way that will allow us to grow. If we don’t do it, we will be in decline, because the productivity of this country is dependent on young people that are equipped to be able to work hard... Immigrants create far more businesses than native-born Americans over the last 20 years. Immigrants are more fertile, and they love families and they have more intact families." (12:25)

The link goes to an NRO Corner piece quoting Frum's which I missed when it came out a few weeks ago. You can see the original here.

I'm sure if this line is pursued in the primaries it will be greeted with defensive shrieks of RACISM! and NATIVISM! from the usual suspects. But if it's fair game to go after Obama for his non-traditional American values, surely it's fair to question a Republican who seems to hold his fellow countrymen in lower esteem than he does others coming here illegally.

As for Bush's desire to give amnesty to illegals, it certainly extends to border jumpers who tend to come from Mexico and Central America. it does not however extend to all illegals.

This is a WaPo story on a speech by Jeb from January.

Here's Bush: "We need to find a way, a path to legalized status for those that have come here and have languished in the shadows. There's no way that they're going to be deported -- no one's suggesting an organized effort to do that. The cost of that would be extraordinary."

And here's Bush: "The 40 percent of the people that have come illegally came with a legal visa and overstayed their bounds. We ought to be able to find where they are and politely ask them to leave."

...

But, it is striking that within two minutes of saying the "politely" line, Bush is, seemingly, contradicting himself by insisting that there is no way all of the people in the country illegally are going to be deported. (He starts the "politely" line at around 23:50 and the we're-not-going-to-round-them-up riff at 25:40.)

The only possible explanation -- at least that I can think of -- is that Bush is differentiating between people who came to the country on legal visas, and then violated the law by staying once the visas ran out, vs. those who simply came to the country entirely illegally. Okay. But that's a very nuanced argument to make with what has become, politically, an absolutely black and white issue.

How can you possibly account for differences between border jumpers and visa overstays? Look at who they are.

Those working to create a path to citizenship for people here illegally often make the distinction to highlight the diverse immigration issues the U.S. faces. Little is known about the demographics of the so-called overstayer population, but some studies suggest they tend to be better educated and more fluent in English than those who crossed the border illegally. They also are more likely to hail from European, Asian and African countries. And in many cases, they used tourist visas to enter the U.S.

...

Madeleine Sumption, a senior policy analyst at the Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan think tank, said that "visa overstayers would benefit more from a legalization program. They have higher levels of skills but are being held back by their legal status." They may have difficulty landing high-skilled jobs because of their illegal status and instead settle for low-skilled positions, she said.

Jeb's not a stupid man. He surely knows the difference between the people he wants to let stay here and the ones he want's to "politely ask to leave".

I've written before that I support immigration reform but not amnesty for anyone regardless of where they are from or how they came to be here illegally. As part of that support I've also been upfront that I favor higher skilled immigrants over lower skilled ones no matter where they come from and I've laid out my reasons why. Jeb is running for President and he should have to explain his apparent bias in favor of low skilled immigrants.

I generally think the notion that there aren't any differences between the two parties to be a silly one. I do however think that what differences there are are insufficient to the health of the nation. Unless Bush has a satisfactory explanation for his demographic engineering choices, a Jeb-Hillary match-up will be a major step forward in blurring what differences there are and advancing Obama's project to fundamentally change America.

That deportation meme has always been a red hearing. What we need to do is cut off all public aid to illegals and audit employers who hire them. First offense is a $1,000 fine per illegal. Second offense is mandatory jail which escalates at each offense.

If they have no government cheese and no work they will go home on their own.

17 It's interesting to note why he claims immigrants are superior: they start more businesses, they have more children, they are more likely to have intact families...

Yet nobody asks the obvious questions: why are Americans starting fewer businesses than in the past? Why are Americans having fewer children than in the past? Why are fewer Americans living in intact families than in the past?

And what makes us think that immigrants will be immune to these influences when they become Americans, too?

29 Yeah... not particularly rage-inducing.

Jeb Bush is a f*cking idiot. It should be fairly easy to pull him into saying something like "heartless" which would kill his chances for good- not that I really think he has that much of a chance (but he does have a lot of money, so he's not down to "no chance").

And it doesn't surprise me that he's hispandering, and I bet he does know it. "We want to ask all those *other people*, you know, the ones who might actually start businesses and create jobs, to leave. But you, oh Brothers from the South! You we want to keep. Because cheep lawn service."

There's not really another way to interpret his position. Low-skilled (functionally no-skilled) workers compete for low-skilled, low-wage jobs. That prevents actual citizens (e.g.: teenagers) from getting those jobs, preventing them from moving up the job ladder as easily. Meanwhile, those low-skilled illegal aliens aren't particularly interested in moving up the job ladder.

59 >>Anyone who would think that "we" can "repopulate" an area, using

another one.

Exactly.
American Thinker had a great post "Importing Revolution" about this very thing:

"One
sign of an imperial government is that it does what it wishes with
whole populations. It can shift some here; move some there. It can
deport some there; import some here....

The motives behind moving whole populations via executive fiat break down into two main categories.

One
is to prevent revolution and unrest by moving and quarantining what are
considered indigestible peoples in order to weaken their resistance to
the powers that be....

But
there is a second reason for moving people around, and that is to
foster revolution by actively promoting unrest. The goal is to achieve "fundamental transformation" of a country by tearing down existing
structures, replacing them with a new order of government."

So I'm thinking Jeb is going for category 1 (prevent unrest), while Obama is going for category 2 (revolution). They're both scary.

Yep, adding 30+ million workers to the labor force is only going to push wages down. These jackass keep forgetting that labor a commodity like anything else. The greater the availability of the resource the cheaper it becomes. Pushing wages down.Posted by: wrg500 at February 26, 2015 09:58 AM (sWgE+)Nah, see, that's why they have to raise the minimum wage to 15 (or 17, or 20, etc.)/hr because business' are greedy. 76 The motives behind moving whole populations via executive fiat break down into two main categories.

I submit that the main motive for relocating populations, repopulating and depopulating areas, and all that, is simple and straightforward -- to TRAIN the population to understand that they are movable and depopulable.

Yes, "depopulable" isn't technically a word, but you know what I mean.

The message of re/depopulation is always the same: "WE DECIDE WHO LIVES WHERE."

Outside of the coastal enclaves and a few mid-continent cities like Chicago, America is a country of racist rednecks and oppressed minorities, all of who except the Native Americans were unwelcome where they were and came here to steal land and exploit Mother Earth. The coastal regions developed culture more like Europe while the interior was only reachable by wagon train or something before polluting railroads were invented.

Were it not for the beautiful green mountains of Vermont and the lovely progressive people here, I would have left for Europe years ago.

I alluded before to the fact that my son was bused to a school across town to even the demographics a bit. That doesn't even get into half of it.

When I went to register him for school, I was literally the only parent in the office who had an American driver's license. There was a machine that checked your sex offender status and printed out a day pass, and above it a huge sign that read "Will NOT check immigration status!"

My autistic son spent the days wondering the halls because the school did not have an autism program since 100% of its resources focused on ESL/Poverty.

He was sick over, and over, and over. At least once a week he brought home some new and exotic illness. We got a paper saying one of the students had TB. We also got a letter threatening the truancy court. For a 5 year old. Who had been sicker than a dog for the entire semester.

We pulled him out after a semester and have never looked back.

It's simple, really - in Jeb's world (and no, I would not consider him to be "a smart man" - I consider him to be a "well born" man. Very different), the "low skilled" are still hard workers with a strong bent to social government, something that the Bushes actively support.
The fact that the vast overwhelming majority of illegal border crossers are NOT hard working or of "social conservative" bent simply doesn't cross his mind, or is something that he dismisses in it's entirety.

142 Jeb's welcome to try to draw a distinction on overstays vs. illegal entrants. Good luck with that.

In the end, a guest who refuses to leave when asked is as much a trespasser as a stranger who jumps your fence. To further the analogy, even these "guests" in question were vetted more like invitees to a party thrown while Mom Dad were on vacation than people Mom Dad would have permitted in smaller numbers to hang with with Junior when they were home. "No parents 'til Sunday, BYOB woot woot" does not make for good future neighbors

I have no problem believing that

As for Drew's proposed immigration reforms, I want to see more effort by companies to find and hire American STEM/high-skilled workers before using visas. I'd scrutinize the company's recent layoff and hiring trends to prevent "dumping" American workers in return for foreign visa workers. Americans without jobs end up using our social services.

I don't want to jam American companies with a protectionist policy on labor costs, but visas amount to the company using government to gain competitive advantage, so it's not as if bargaining for immigrant labor is a wholly private exchange to begin with. It's a tough grey area that toes the line of "you didn't build that" in that I'm saying the companies hiring immigrant labor have to balance the resulting strain on our social services, while the company just wants highest skill, lowest cost. You could reasonably, if tenuously, counter-argue that I'm looking for a "Rooney Rule" or outright affirmative action re: American vs. immigrant workers.

I want American labor deregulated to make our companies more competitive to help balance that out - something I also support with respect to "free trade" policies and foreign-based labor.

He rallied support for the surge at a time when he was politically weakest. There is certainly some truth to your statement. 152 Minimum wage was never designed to be a living wage.
It was designed for teens to get their feet on the ground with a first
job and learn job/life skills.

Posted by: wrg500 at February 26, 2015 10:03 AM (sWgE+)

Minimum wage had nothing to do with easing teens' entry to the job market. If anything, it acts as a barrier to that, because it prevents would-be employers from offering jobs at lower rates that might be attractive to teens seeking part-time work.

Minimum wage is a sop to Big Labor, nothing more, nothing less.

These people make laws for a living. They need to point to all the laws they make to justify their jobs. Think about it: Most laws are inherently pointless.

It doesn't matter what laws we write. It doesn't matter how we officially agree to enforce them. We effectively have an open boarders situation, and our government encourages and rewards this. They WANT this.

I doubt this will change until our government changes. And, our government appears to be working overtime to make sure the nature of this country changes before we can change our government. They want to render us irrelevant.

188 One reason why it seems like there's little difference between the parties is because each is trying to appeal to that 51st swing vote. It seems to me that the best way to get politicians to support a good idea is to make the idea so popular that a politician can't get elected without supporting it. It's not the politician's job to make good ideas popular. That's the people's responsibility. The politician's job is to do what the people want. The problem we're having is that the people want more free stuff.

266 One thing that would help this discussion is some honesty about the numbers of illegals here. That 11 million number is fictitious. For one it hasn't changed in years, two it implies a level of accuracy not possible to know and three it undoubtedly the real number is at least twice that.

Ten years ago the number used to be reported was a range, often 12-15 million, sometime 15-20 million. This numbers, while probably low, were more accurate as they reflected that nobody really knows for sure and were closer to the truth. However time has passed and millions more have entered the country. The actual range anybody that is paying attention could tell you is no less 20 to 30 million. The ll million number is pure BS based not on a headcount but computer models and guesswork by people isolated from the problem. Expect many politicians expressing "surprise" (or hiding) after the amnesty takes effect and the numbers of applicants are 2 or 3 times the public estimates.

This is goingt o be a huge disaster, perhaps the biggest one this country ever had and it is so painfully obvious. Worse, it is self inflicted

So now the tea parties(note that there is no formal "tea party" singular. There are a lot of different tea parties that align on policy but like as not have only indirect connection to each other outside of agreeing on policy)are evangelical? That's interesting. There are evangelicals in the various tea parties, but only a bigoted little projecting troll would extrapolate thattea parties are solely populated byevangelicals. Of course, that's what we are dealing with here.

2. No one here hates latinos, to my knowledge. Only a bigoted, imbecilic little troll would draw "hates" from "disagrees with their decision to break the law and wants to see the law enforced because we are a nation of laws, and heaven help you if you cross the border illegally into Mexico either from the US or from South/Central America.".

Do you ever stop to think that there are lots of people who are trying to get into this country legally from places like Europe, Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and elsewhere, and putting actual immigration requirements on them while freely allowing immigration across our borders without requirements or checks makes a mockery of the legal immigration system?

Applying your so-called logic, whydo you hate Europeans, Asians, and Africans?
I say all that, but I need to remind myself that I am dealing with an imbecilic sad little retread troll so I shouldn't expect logic, intellectual coherence, consistency, or curiosity. Just bile, vitriol, racism, bigotry, and no-nothingism of the kind that would make the KKK welcome it with open arms and a ticker-tape parade.

Even the 11 million number would be a problem, particularly where about 1/3+ of them are in CA assuming present distribution is similar to the early 2000's. That's 10%+ of the most populace state. It's easily enough to crash the polls, more so when CA is militantly opposed to verifying voter bona fides.

Look at the CA legislature. Super-super majority Prog Left, heavily Hispanic. When the biggest population state is an outlying province of Greater Mexico, what impact does that have on American politics?

Add in TX illegal population as well, then the other SW and Plains states, then IL.

And as you said, the real numbers are much higher - I'd guesstimate double to triple as many.

352 "Jeb is running for President and he should have to explain his apparent bias in favor of low skilled immigrants"

Two words that are accurate but you will NEVER hear them say:

Servant Class

That's what this crap is all about, in addition to the left-right demographic meddling of course. Just listen to what the amnesty people say, and I mean really listen. They all go through the son stories about the poor hotel maid, or the gardener, or the lowest level factory worker, or the veggie picker. It's no coincidence that's what they're always on about, and that those are the jobs they say Americans won't do. And they're fricking right about the last part but they always leave out the fact that Americans aren't real keen to go out and pick fruit and vegetables (ie, actual hard physical labor) for minimum wage or less and no benefits.

What people like Jeb want is for the low skill illegals to come in and serve them for beans. But, of course, they don't ever come out an say that. No, instead they trot out poor Rosita and her sob story so that unthinking douchebag shut-ins like Hector will latch on and scream racist when you try to point out that importing people to essentially be our slaves is fricking wrong and doesn't help Americans.

The key words there are "of our choosing." Jeb isn't. If you don't want him as a nominee, he needs smacked down. "Happy talk focus on Hillary" lets him off the hook and leaves him hanging around.

No one here, GOP or third party, lacks smack for Hillary, if that's your concern. She'll be dealt with in time. No one is going to remember in 2016 what we say about her today. The "focus on the Democrat" argument is too often used as a substitute for "stop bad-mouthing my guy," especially in the pre-pre-primary phase. Not saying that's what you're doing, I just don't care for it in general.

I'll say this, my border hawk stance is not out of "hate", if anything, I actually have a higher opinion of most Latinos than I do the average American, in many ways I think they are better people. That being said, they will bring with them Venezuela-type socialism.

Jeb is one of those rare situations where I can almost see myself voting for Hillary if Jeb is the nominee. I can't really say that about any other Republican who's running, but if there's some sort of mass amnesty and open border policy in this country opened up by Jeb, I'd rather have the Clintons.

I'm guessing the native-born file more requests for permits, get more health inspections, pay more payroll and sales taxes, etc. Enforcement of these things seems to be, shall we say, selective. It is in CA for damn sure. Under the table businesses, particularly food and repair/maintenance/construction, are the rule rather than the exception with illegals. Try starting one of those businesses above-board - spoiler: have thousands of dollars and a couple hundred hours to spare first.

It's pretty simple - enforcement in CA goes first to where the money is, and second to where the political clout isn't. Illegals win on both, so those playing by the rules get the short end.

A good part of the reason unskilled Americans won't do those jobs is welfare, EBT, Section 8, etc. If all that were to go away, it would be a question of work or starve.

433 421, AOP. Have never been there, but know a guy who has property there. He said (and this was five years ago or so) is that it's OK, though there is some drug gang influence seeping in from Guatemala and Mexico next door. There is a farm use license (similar to Australia?) that allows one shotgun and another personal protection type license allowing one pistol up to 9mm. No shall-issue, all subject to the discretion of the cops. Things may have changed.

434 How many can we actually deport?

One?

Five?

Is 37 our limit?

I'd like one of the bitches who bitches that we can't deport XX million people tell me just how many we could deport, and then explain why we couldn't deport more.

Posted by: revolting peasant at February 26, 2015 11:27 AM (Dwg9a)

435 They will self deport if we begin actual enforcement. Hell, when AZ was working on an actual enforcement law, they began self deportation before it was passed.

Wouldn't Canada be better? No third world problems. No immigrant problems with USA as a buffer. Liberal yes although not needing armed security to live their.

Common sense would suggest that we follow the law that states that they are all supposed to be deported, and all their employers are supposed to be fined and / or jailed.

Perhaps your eminence could provide one non-political reason why we couldn't make that happen.

438 When did deporting someone become such an evil act?

How is it any different than someone getting their home foreclosed because they didn't pay the mortgage or a landlord kicking someone out because they wouldn't pay the rent?

These people aren't going into some Gulag when we say you can't legally be here. It means you have to leave and go back to your home.

We probably won't, but that is because of Democrats and idiots like
Jeb.

Jeb, you were a decent enough governor.

Just leave it at that. Your push for amnesty and common core pretty much pisses a lot of people off. Of course, the lefties that dislike common core probably wouldn't have voted for you anyway, but still...it's a bipartisan feeling.

441 I don't think any conservative really believes the right candidate is going to come along and put 20 million illegals in cattle cars and send them home.

What the knuckle dragging among us want is

A) no citizenship for illegals
B) A truly secure border that is not porous
C) businesses get penalized for hiring illegals
D) No government benefits for illegals

You do these things, and they'll leave for greener pastures and stay there. I really think if you polled Americans and asked them these questions, 70% plus would agree with a platform like that.

"Jeb Bush is probably the most experienced and competent contender for the presidency in the field. The country would be very fortunate indeed if he came to occupy the Oval Office."

Walker has demonstrated significantly greater competence, from what I've seen. In any case, running anyone who's last name is "Bush" would be stupid.

You claim Jeb was talking about illegals when he was talking about legal immigrants. You then went on a rant about visa overstays and Jebs preference for Latinos.

You do hate them, just be honest. Either way you have motivated me to go door to door for Hillary Clinton.

I'd add in a few things. We need to clamp down on chain migration. We need a system that puts the interests of the US first. And we need to round up some illegals and send 'em back, via internal enforcement.

Round up a few and send 'em back, and many will self deport. The reason is that by doing so you alter the economics of the issue, and the incentives. A yong male single illegal may still jump the fence for work, but families and women are more likley to start packing bags to go home.

No one talks about legal immigrants. Legals are limited, in large part due to the fact we have so many illegals.

A) So illegal immigrants themselves wont be citizens, but their children will be, because born in America. You basically just kick this can a generation down the road. Thats a big deal for you?
B) Nobody can guarantee that. Those who promise it lie to you. There will be another Dem in the White House and we all know how they enforce laws they dont like.
D) Again, so their children will get them instead. The effects will occur a generation later. This is your great goal? This is what all the fuss is about for immigration hawks?

I'm also a white man married to a Latina. But I also realize we need to control immigration. Our current system is basically controlled by illegal immigrants from Latin America, who will vote for the same failure they fled when they came here.

"I disagree with you, but respect your honesty. At least you admit the GOP is the party of white Protestants and others are not welcomed.

Latinos are often white and not all are Catholic, either.

The problem is one of culture. Latin American culture has continued to fail at creating rule of law. That is the fundamental problem in Latin America, and it is replicated here among Latin Americans as shown in their tendency to become Democrats.

If you have some knowledge of Mexican history, you understand that Mexico has been, slowely, improving. This is a result of cultural change, and no doubt in part due to Mexican experience with the US. After 70 years of one party rule after the Mexican Revolution, Mexico began to move towards real democracy, but it is a slow and delicate process.

The Latinos we would want to bring into the country typically would be those fleeing socialist dictatorships like Venezuela or Cuba (but not the criminal prison population, but the actual middle class fleeing communism). But we must always keep in mind that immigration from third world countries is problematic, and should be kept to a slow flow to allow assimilation (and we need to minimize welfare state programs that can undercut assimilation, as well).
