Doom? Yeah, This Isn't Good [CBD]

Baltic Dry Index.jpg

The Baltic Dry Index is a rough measure of the cost of moving bulk materials by sea. Obviously the price of oil has a significant impact on this index, but since the cost to enter (and exit) this market is huge and long-term (many millions of dollars and a few years to build a bulk carrier), supply is inelastic and small changes in demand have clear impacts on pricing. And...shipping companies often purchase fuel futures to hedge their costs, so rapid changes in oil prices will not correspond to rapid changes in their fuel costs.

And here is the opposite view, thanks to commenter "Sauropod."
Why You Shouldn't Worry About The Baltic Dry Index Hitting A 29-Year Low

Low cost corresponds roughly with low demand, and if there is decreasing demand for bulk shipping that means that the world economy is not happy.

This is a rough measure, but it is an important one.

4 It looks wonderful to me. The cost of moving bulk materials by sea is plummeting. Therefore, the stuff that I buy which relies on the materials for their manufacture should also be dropping.

Like I said, wonderful.

13 Well, let's see, tax it until it stops moving then subsidize it. I think the only solution is for the United States taxpayers to start transferring cash to overseas shipping companies. Well, actually, the taxpayer should transfer cash to the government then the government will transfer it to the overseas shipping companies. Well transfer most of the money to overseas shipping companies. Or perhaps some of the money... It sort of depends how much the overseas shipping companies contributed to the Obama campaigns.

16 Meaning although fuel prices have dropped quickly, the shipping companies have locked in fuel prices that are higher than what you or I would pay. So the shipping company will continue to charge a higher rate because they already bought The fuel. They will pass that cost to us the consumer.

66 what sauropod said is what I've heard from another source as well. Oversupply, overproduction of very large ships makes the index not as useful as it used to be. But it still might indicate a slowdown, though any slowdown at all will be accentuated in the Baltic Dry Index.

Overall lower prices are good for a consumer, and deflation is helpful for savers, especially since the pluckers like dove Yellin have spent six years paying zero interest and doing QE so commie Obama can look good while playing Santa Claus. Savers have bought everything they need, so have borrowers ... houses are full of cheap Chinese product ... now what? More welfare I guess, so the poor can buy more things.

QE and ZIRP are distorting things, including investments ... it's a brave new world.

Posted by: FireHorse at March 01, 2015 12:37 PM (KTXxI)

Not necessarily, as Forbes notes, supply of ships has increase and in the free market those with ships have to fight for cargo. More supply with same demand, price goes down. Even if demand increases, as long as the supply increases at a greater rate, the price will fall.

Regardless, transportation costs of goods are always a cost to producers. Lowering those costs reduces their marginal cost and thus makes their break even point lower.
This is A GOOD thing for the economy, not a bad thing.

It would be debatable whether it was a legal order anyway. Just because a superior officer gives it doesn't necessarily make it legal. Yes, the individual would likely be court martialed. Would he or she be convicted? It would be interesting to find out.

When is the last time a lawful order was given to American personnel, to shoot and kill allied soldiers/sailors/airmen? The closest I can think of were the Vichy french ships blockading a harbor (sorry, I forget where/when), but Vichy france was NOT an ally. Still, lots of men thought long and hard about whether they were willing to kill french sailors. Ultimately, they did, but it was not an easy call. Anywhere up or down the chain of command.

From 5% all the way down to 2.2% if memory serves.

Just two notes here.

The first is that revisions as large as that indicate that Fedzilla's econometrics are essentially unfit for purpose.

The second is to remember that the Obama administration, around the end of 2013, frustrated with the failure of Obamanomics to produce tangible economic growth, deliberately reweighted GDP calculations in such a way as to count "intangibles" more heavily, and so as to artificially boost GDP by about 2%. So a 2.2% print is basically just above stall speed in old-time terms.

I'm making the distinction between a good THING for the economy and a good SIGN of the economy. They're often related inversely. A languishing Baltic Dry Index is a sign that (maybe) global commerce has slowed down.

If true (and I'm quite sure it is), this is actually the biggest news of the entire Obama administration.

(See Drudge at the moment -- good that he is featuring this story prominently.)

With this incident, Obama has placed our military at the disposal of Iran, in order to defend Iran's nuclear-bomb-making facilities.

In other words, the reversal is complete: America is now on the side of the terrorists.

Obama somehow managed to switch sides without most Americans even knowing it.

This is the equivalent of FDR attacking British planes on their way to bomb Germany.

It is treason, it is epic in importance, it is the biggest news of the last six years.

And the media are such whores, such self-loathing evil traitors, that they will do everything in their power to cover it up.

Comparing Iranian support for terrorism - systematic, aggressive, directed and approved from the very top leadership, utilizing all state assets and instruments needed, global - to $$$ that comes from people who are either Saudi, or Kuwaiti, or UAE citizens (or British, or American) is not very meaningful.

I would have loved for the SAS and British intel to have been able to take out big IRA supporters in the US (hello, Rep. King!). But I don't think it would have made much sense for the Brits to conclue "hmm, the US is one of the biggest sponsors of IRA terror". We're not the only country where private action and resources can diverge from national policy.

The Gulf regimes have been the targets and enemies of most serious terrorist operations since they got going in the late 1960s. Regime response has varied, from buying them off, to "retaining" them to keep to play dirty (use as an asset), to viciously fighting them (often cooperating with us and the Brits and, more recently, the Little Satan itself).

I had noted that 2.2% growth is not that far above where we used to reckon "stall speed" to be, and that observation remains unaltered by the error.

However, if you take off the tin-foil hat for a moment, the low BSI is easily explained:
1) Low oil prices, duh...
2) Container ships are getting massively bigger and more efficient (cheaper) per unit shipped.
3) Outside the US, most world economies are still struggling, especially Europe, due to stupid austerity policies (Economy is slow, so let's apply contractionary measures and then be surprised when contraction occurs).
4) Building all those mega-ships created a temporary over-supply, which will get fixed as shipbuilding slows in response to low rates (Markets work!, duh).

Bottom line, nothing to see here, move along.

For all of the Arab world's bitching about Israeli nukes, privately they don't care at all, because they know that Israel is responsible and would never use them aggressively.

All Sunni Arab regimes regard Iran as the primary enemy. Yes nutcases like ISIS are a problem obviously, but the state-level threat and rival is and has been Iran for a long time. So in this Israel and the Sunni Arab regimes share essentially parallel interests, and cooperation towards a solution (or assistance and field-shaping as in leaks and info) among them has been happening and will continue.

1. Spot oil prices don't change the BDI very much. Most carriers own long-term contracts for fuel.

2. That doesn't explain rapid change.

3. Agreed, although Europe and China are getting worse.

4. I don't buy this explanation completely. Shipbuilding takes a long time, and shipping companies will extend building times to balance demand, because it's cheaper to pay a bit more to the builder than to let a completed ship sit idle.

Every step he makes aids Iran in its quest.

The question then becomes: Why?

And the terrifying realization is that any conceivable answer to that question is ugly, mortifying, hair-raising, and brutal.

I offer as potential answers to that "Why?":

a. Obama want Iran to nuke Israel to finally complete the genocide of the Jewish people.

b. Obama despises America and it role in the world defending capitalism, and wants America to be defeated and relegated to the dustbin of history.

c. He is trying to facilitate the establishment of a new Islamic caliphate.

b. By now this is axiomatic.

c. Perhaps, but militant Islam is also sticking its thumb in America's eye, which makes Obama happy.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at March 01, 2015 01:59 PM (Zu3d9)

231 I read the Forbes article and it doesn't convince me.

Short summary: the drop in shipping prices isn't a sign of economic slowdown, it's just a sign of overcapacity in the shipping industry.

(Not provided: any data to back that up.)

Here's my problem with the Forbes article: new ships were built to handle increased demand, especially for Asian imports and exports. If there's too many ships, that means the demand isn't as high as people expected when those keels were laid. Which means the economy is slowing down. Just as the Baltic Index suggests . . .

Posted by: Trimegistus at March 01, 2015 02:00 PM (ULxbM)

232 >>What else could his rationale possibly be?

The most charitable other reason I can come up with is he believes that the only way to stop Iran from getting a nuke is to go to war. Iran has been quite clear on it's goal to get nukes and no amount of negotiating is going to stop them.

Obama will never commit the US to a war of his making. A fly by like we did in Libya or are currently doing in Iraq/Syria is one thing but just as in the ISIS he won't commit ground troops and complete the job.

So he's just kicking the can down the road and pretending that he is getting some concessions. He's trying to run out the clock and turn this bag of crap over to his successor as Clinton did with al Qaeda.

Obama believes that American influence and power are bad things. In his mind, it is the root cause of most of the world's problems. If he can move the U.S. out of the business of the M.E., replaced with a regional nuke power like Iran, he thinks that is a good thing. They can manage themselves and the U.S. won't have to worry about it or get involved anymore. The M.E. can then resolve the "Israel problem" of their own accord and, oh well the outcome.

The container ship supplied the barges , tugs and cranes which were also stored on the ship. They never said how much it cost people to have these items shipped. I can't imagine it was cheap after watching the process.

260 Lots of heavy food for thought this weekend: Weirddave's excellent molon labe post, Bob Owens reply to it; that Drudge headline; the fact that we keep getting fed bs numbers about economy; and the seeming lack of heart in congress. All that being said, darkness encroaches only when light diminishes. Like my institutional (Army) ancestors, i won't give up and will try to keep the light on, though it may be small. Fuck the darkness. In the ear.

There were articles in our local Canadian rag a few weeks ago about people living way up north and how much they pay for basic food items.

I'd love to toss out some numbers, but I don't recall them exactly and it wouldn't be accurate, but they did make my eyes widen. And then I thought that if you don't like paying x dollars for basic goods, move out of the freaking North.

287 It would be extremely interesting if the IAF got the order to strike Iran, and Obama ordered the USAF to engage them.

USAF have not fought a genuine peer adversary air to air in many decades' time. And Israel is a peer adversary plus plus. Israeli pilots are superb; they regularly scare their American counterparts at events like Red Flag. Israeli electronic warfare is probably superior to American EW at crunch time.

The total joke of the F-35 notwithstanding, the only American air asset that the IAF would have serious difficulty in countering would be the F-22 Raptor. It would be very interesting indeed to see what present Raptor deployment dispositions looked like.

Note also that the Israelis have capabilities that could simply remove American air assets from the impending fight. Stealth cruise missiles with runway-cratering munitions, for one. No roll, no fly.

305 I'm hungover and drunk right now. Hair o'the dog. So your take on what I am about to proclaim should be tinged with that in mind.

We're so fucked in so many ways. By 'we' I mean flyover country bumpkins and even the pathetic E-W Coastals that are innudating my beloved Republic of Texas (I don't fucking like you-at all-as a demographic but personally -one to one-I don't like/hate you more than I would a normal person and btw, please leave).

Anyway, we elect these pillars of our community and give them the largest numbers in 3 gdamn generations and they're standing around with their dicks in their hands. One might say,"Well how much can expect from anyone stupid enough to run for a public office?" And here we is.

But more to the point I am concerned with is that I want Texas to secede. I'm not talking about a violent secession, Keep in mind Texas is a STATE in the UNITED STATES of AMERICA. We should just say adios America, it's not about you, we're going through some changes and remaining to be a proud part the USA isn't part of the equation anymore. USA, don't go away mad, just go away.

Oh, that thing about breaking California into 4 states - bad fucking idea. California is lost for the next century. Containment. Because Democrats/Progs/Hollywood.

And now I will watch 'Aces High' on Netflix. In advance, thank you and/or fuck off.
