PPP Poll: Walker Leads GOP Pack with 25%; Jeb at 17%, Huckabee at 10%

Ben Carson is actually in second place with 18%.

Jay Cost looks back to the Republican convention of 1880 to find a case of a "frontrunner" whose support is as anemic as Jeb Bush's in this interesting piece. He compares today's vampiric Republican establishment class (most of whom make a living off being professional Republicans) to the "Immortal 306," the 306 delegates who never gave up on trying to give U.S. Grant a then-unprecedented third term as president -- just to get their federal patronage phony-baloney jobs back.

Jeb certainly looks to be cornering the market on the modern variety of professional Republicans, but he too will have to do more. What is the case for a Bush restoration, beyond the fact that it would make the professional GOP comfortable once again? Why should average Republican primary voters -- the insurance salesmen and truck drivers, not pollsters and policy advisors -- choose Jeb over Scott Walker, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, or the dozen other potential nominees? Jeb will have to make a very persuasive argument on this front. He will face tougher competition than his brother did in 2000. Indeed, 2016 could see the most competitive GOP primary since 1980.

As Grant’s experience in 1880 demonstrates, winning over the insiders and professionals is simply not enough. The Immortal 306 may stay with you the whole way, but they are never a majority of the party. Can Jeb expand beyond them? It remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Robert Tracyzinski pens this good piece on Scott Walker's challenge to the current establishment class, and I mean "class" more emphatically than usual.

There are no real class divisions in America except one: the college-educated versus the non-college educated...

That brings us to the heart of the matter. I have observed before that left-leaning politics has become "part of the cultural class identity of college-educated people," a prejudice that lingers long after they have graduated. You can see how this goes the other way, too. If to be college-educated is to have left-leaning views--then to have the "correct" political values, one must be college-educated.

You can see now what is fueling the reaction on the left. If Scott Walker can run for president, he is challenging the basic cultural class identity of the mainstream left. He is more than a threat to the Democrats' hold on political power. He is a threat to the existing social order.

I'm not sure if I agree with his formulation -- that leftist politics are now part of the cultural identity of college educated people. Let's always remember there are more college-educated Republicans than Democrats.

I think it works better in reverse -- that college is one of the most important class markers for those with left-leaning politics. *

But interesting stuff.

And more on Scott Walker from The Meatball, who says Scott Walker is all the left's fault.

The ferocity of the anti-Walker attacks during the recall attempt cannot be understated: no stone was left unturned, no "scandal" or slip of the tongue left unmentioned, and this may only help candidate Walker going into 2016. The Democrats spent millions of dollars and thousands of hours digging, scooping, ad-cutting, and hammering. They threw the kitchen sink at the guy in 2012, threw their neighbor’s sink at him in 2014, and now nobody on the block will let them inside to pee. Out of useful topsoil, what do they do now?

Had the Democrats not targeted Walker with a recall, that massive fundraiser network, the national profile, the party unity, and his highly developed get-out-the-vote team almost certainly wouldn’t exist. He may have still won re-election, but he would be just another Midwestern Republican governor who enacted reforms and faced push-back, not the conservative folk hero of a party longing for a win...

They shot the king and missed, making a balding, sleepy-eyed executive into a god among a growing horde of followers. That’s bad enough for the Progressive set. In the unlikely event he wins the Republican nomination and the presidency? They struck the match that ignited their own national hell.

Whoa, let's not get ahead of ourselves! He's not the National Death Dealer quite yet.

* Actually, thinking about it, he may be right: Leftist poses as a sort of "scientific materialist" cosmopolitan sophistication, which is attractive to those who wish to be considered educated but aren't so much.

One thing this particular class likes to do to demonstrate its class affiliation is to offer up leftist dogmas -- and even Republicans will do this.

Right now, we're seeing many educated Republicans swear on a pack of Bibles that Obama loves his country and must assuredly be a Christian (it's not like he's ever lied to us before for purposes of political viability, God knows).

Traczynski may be right-- maybe even Republicans feel the need to declare their fidelity to leftist dogmas in order to establish their class separation from The Lower Orders.

19 Walker has the best shot at rescuing the GOP from itself but it's certainly not going to be easy. He really has to break outside of the normal campaign mode of going hat-in-hand to the MSM, schlepping around to the usual powerbrokers, etc.

Also, I look forward to establishment sucks trying to play their usual card - "he can win!" - because another Bush on the ticket is a guaranteed loss.

Tons of anti-Walker propaganda (that stupid fucking fist) on their newly constructed Soviet-style concrete shitboxes and spray-painted on the crumbling debris of yesteryear's manufacturing ruins.

Some genius had plastered a thousand posters of an AT-AT with the words "Imperial Walker" all around the neighborhood. Harf harf, Evil Empire...wait a minute! AT-ATs are fucking awesome! This Walker kicks the ass of everything in its way, and it's GLORIOUS!

When the GOP filed the Impeachment papers against Clinton, and they passed the House, almost everyone expected that the charges would die in the Senate which they did. Afterwards, Clinton came out stronger and more "in your face" afterwards because of this.

Now, it's the Dems turn. They wanted to take out Walker, but they failed. In failing, they made him a national name, and they made him stronger in his home state which he probably will flip to the GOP if he runs in 2016.

What's the age breakdown? I'm guessing it's older college-educated Americans who skew Republican. Now that college is for "everyone" and no longer requires critical thinking in many fields--it's literally leftist indoctrination--I think college-educated Republicans are going to dwindle dwindle dwindle.

Could not have been a more naked display of how they expect their game to be played - they asked a question knowing full well there was only one acceptable answer that dings a fellow GOP (so it meets the "oh noes, strife w.in GOP! meme) AND flatters Obama despite his recent Prayer Breakfast and Extremist Conference stunts. 171 Re the sidebar about Chicago's Homan Street: Ace, I don't live there, but I would be highly suspect of anything being put out by the Guardian (that appears to be a week-long "expose" series). It sounds like a holding facility. People get detained or arrested all the time in big cities, and they aren't necessarily moved to central booking until there's room for them and the people there to process them. And there are priorities for secure transportation, too, and moving people in detention to central booking isn't necessarily at the top of the list. So you can actually wait up to 48 hours according to the Constitution before being arraigned (obviously you need to have been charged at some point before appearing before a magistrate, but it doesn't need to be immediate). If you're questioned, the penalty if you haven't been Mirandized is that the evidence obtained from the questioning is inadmissible if objected to by your lawyer. I just doubt that it is all as sinister as the Guardian portrays to be.

The only thing I might recommend for a plumber is some good business classes at the local community college. But those can wait until one feels like venturing off on their own.

I think there's a group that has become decidedly anti-college, which I think is also the wrong tact. Here's the deal you got to figure out what's good for you. Not the book learning type? Go do a trade, make shit tons of money. Better have drive though.

Not the hands on dirt trudging type? College is probably a *safer* bet.

Nothing is a sure thing though, I have a cousin who went to college, failed to find work, then went on to do pipefitting, hated it, bummed around for a bit (honestly not sure what he did there) and now does campus ministry stuff for a local high school. (Frankly he's lucky he landed on his ass there.)

Conversely I have a cousin who went straight to trade learning (HVAC) which should have been good work for him (he was never not employed) but it didn't work out. (My family is lucky in that they all do pretty well for themselves so his dad found him work with his shipping company. Believe you me, it's not cushy work, he loads trucks.)

I've got two uncles, brothers. One went to college, architecture, the other started driving a fedex truck out of high school. Both drive beamers and live in expensive houses (not mansions, just nice, expensive property). Both spend a fortune on golf. You'd never be able to tell which took what career path at this point (although back some time ago, it was more apparent.)

Right to work law now? Guess what? The states he needs to win are all right to work states, so that won't hurt him.

Disagree, really.

If you're not actually interested in being President, I don't want you to run in the primary. We've had a divided Conservative caucus for too long, as the 3 legs of the stool kept fighting with each other.

For once, it would be nice if the actual conservatives got together ahead of time and said, "Okay, Scott (or Rick, or Ted, or whichever one), you run, and we'll back your play."

So on Morning Joe this morning they were addressing the appeal of Hillary. And they really didn't find much.

She didn't do much as a Senator. Nothing to show as SoS. And that book tour that was supposed to be a pre-launch of the campaign was a disaster. What up with that? Does anyone understand it?

The best defense that was offered was that as a feisty carpetbagger she was able to beat a Republican congressman for Senate, but that is weak tea.

Mika got moist in the panties over the prospect of Sen. High Cheekbones, as usual.

In an ideal world I agree. But if you are Ted Cruz - right now you pretend like you are running. It gets people to donate and gets people interested. Whether you run or not you will have more influence. If you do actually run and pick up delegates, you will have more influence.

It could backfire too. If you run and no one votes for you, it signals to others that you are not that powerful and you lose influence.

How many states will Hillary! win when Walker/Martinez win 60%+ of the white vote, 45-50% of the Hispanic vote, and the black vote says "the fuck wit' it" when Obama isn't on the ticket anymore?

10? 12? Maybe?

I look just at Ohio for instance. Right now, the Ohio Dem party has as it's possible challengers to Sen. Portman a 30 year old first term Cincinnati councilman and Ted Strickland, 73 years old and last seen taking John Kasich's barbed cock out of his ass 5 years ago. The same is true around the country. the Dems have shit for a bench.

I'll laugh my ass off if Condi does jump in to Cali's Senate race. Who are the Dems gonna run against her? Who will the black folks vote for in Cali, an actual black person who survived the Birmingham church bombings and ended up the Secretary of State, or some white guy lib from the Bay Area, which about what the Dems could put up?

All the doom and gloom being sold on this site is entertaining but isn't based in actual electoral reality. The RNC is in the best position it's been in since Coolidge and people just want to bitch and moan about this tactical shift or that one on a day-today basis.

However, if you live 'out in the country somewhere by yourself' and want to own a semi-automatic weapon, he added, 'I've no problem with that.'

346 Ok you leftist FSA motherfuckers, now *I* got a phone and a pen. Your life as you know it is over. I'm gonna reap what you assholes sowed. I am death incarnate.

347 All the doom and gloom being sold on this site is entertaining but isn't based in actual electoral reality. The RNC is in the best position it's been in since Coolidge and people just want to bitch and moan about this tactical shift or that one on a day-today basis.

-----

I'm with you. We can bitch about the GOP not being conservative, but to say that the GOP is dead or can't compete with the Democrats is to avoid reality. I don't know if the GOP will win in 2016, but I see no reason why they can't.

348 I'll laugh my ass off if Condi does jump in to Cali's Senate race. Who are the Dems gonna run against her? Who will the black folks vote for in Cali, an actual black person who survived the Birmingham church bombings and ended up the Secretary of State, or some white guy lib from the Bay Area, which about what the Dems could put up?

The lib guy.

Sure they're competitive electorally. So what? They clearly cannot compete with the Democrats on policy, which is why the country lurches steadily left every year regardless of who is in charge. The Era of Big Government is not only not over, but is rolling on, unabated.

I'm not a "Professional Republican", so frankly I couldn't care less that they're electorally competitive. I care that they can change the direction of the country and, but all indications, they cannot.

350 Let's be honest about the Bushes. "Kinder Gentler Gentler Nation" (Bush 41) "Compassionate Conservatism" (Bush 43) "Right to Rise" (Bush Wannabe) are all the same damn thing; lipstick slogans on the pig of Progressive, Big Government, Rockefeller Republicanism.

All the Bushes are Patricians, Gentry with the same view of the American middle class and working class as their openly Progressive Democrat counterparts. They see us as peasants and customers for Government. It's why they make no distinction between Americans and illegal immigrants; alike, we are all the peasant class to be ruled over.

No one in the Bush family is ever going to lose out on a job because an immigrant will work cheaper; nor are they going to miss out on an educational opportunity because Affirmative Action will favor immigrants, illegal and otherwise. Policies that beggar the working classes only mean more dividends in their portfolios.

351 None of the Bill Clinton rapey stuff was "new". But it could be replayed for a national audience who hadn't heard it yet and were being asked to make a concrete judgement on it.

Madison was a local story. Walker is unheard of outside Republican circles, and the midwest.

There wasn't the 24/7 news cycle back then that needed those types of stories to run for several news cycles.

Don't forget, MSNBC and NBC had their whole political staffs out in Wisconsin for Walker's recall election and the other recall elections.

For whatever reason, the egos involved with grassroots candidates are enormous. They always think they are the only one that can save the world and would rather see the Democrat win if they can't have it.

Until I saw this comment I never understood the famous quote of McCain about having nothing to fear from an obomber presidency. The above commenter just explained it!

354 I like Scott Walker. He's a governor, he's lead something. He's the governor of a blue state. And he's taken no prisoners on his conservative policies. He doesn't apologize for them. There's a lesson in there for the GOP, but will they find it?

355 "...and I mean "class" more emphatically than usual."

The GOPe puts the ASS in CLASS.

356 Walker will fold faster than Superman on laundry day on immigration. All your choices are squishes. The best option is Bush, because progressives hate the name so much they will leave the country if they win, and if Jeb loses, we can give up on dynasties and the next in line for one party at least.

Posted by: Tattoo De Plane at February 24, 2015 01:43 PM (Y92Nd)

357 All the Johnny Rebs are going to vote for whoever the GOP puts up. What about Walker's fellow dynamic Midwesterners?

358 Like I said before, last June when our church was
doing the honor the high school graduates thing, it was all he's going
to be a physicist and she's planning on med school and polite applause
and then "and Timmy has already lined up an apprenticeship with a
plumber" and everyone was all ohhhhh.

My direct supervisor at NASA - who was awarded a gold medal for his outstanding achievements in mathematical analysis - worked his way through college as a plumber's assistant. Being a Rocket Scientist requires a grounding in reality - otherwise you wind up as just a Space Cadet.

359 Immigration, immigration, immigration.

Seriously? With all the other things facing the country, why do some people obsess about the Mexicans? A third of the total have settled in SoCal, anyway. Most of the rest are in TX, NM, and AZ, which is where Mexicans and Mexican immigrants have been living since before those places were in the US.

I just don't get it. Every Mexican I've ever met was a normal person just like any other. Did some of you get sick on a burrito once? Or fail high school Spanish class?

I don't get the obsession.

I'm biased towards Carson, but he explicitly and clearly supports the 2nd amendment for the reasons the original founders drafted it.

Carson is an enormous wildcard, in the sense that no one since Eisenhower has run without a pretense of being a politician. He's as much at war with political correctness as he is as a presidential candidate, so he will say things that will continue to make lefties heads explode, but will make enormous inroads for independents who hate both parties and the Beltway ethos. If he thinks he has to muzzle himself to be competitive, I'm sure he will quit the race and enjoy a well deserved retirement.

I think this is going to boil down to Walker and Carson, and folks are going to be torn between choosing a great governor who really knows how to run things and let Americans go about their own business, and a once in a lifetime cultural warrior who sees our divisive culture as an existential threat.

Actually I want both of them as presidents.

362 Here's a question... Why do leftists and the media (who generally deride Christianity and Christian values) care if anyone has doubts about whether Obama is a believer? Shouldn't they be jumping with joy that he is NOT considered a member of this despised demographic?
