The brother of an American woman who was killed after spending months as a hostage of Islamic State militants says Kayla Mueller's situation worsened after the government traded five Taliban commanders for a captive U.S. soldier.

The militants increased their demands after the May swap for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, Eric Mueller told NBC's "Today" in an interview that aired Monday.
"That made the whole situation worse because that's when the demands got greater," he said. "They got larger. They realized that they had something."

Kidnapping and ransoming is one of the more stress-related jobs in existence, and as the president said, not enough people have enough money saved up when they get near retirement. Three hostages, maybe four, and you could have a nice nest egg built up, but not everyone can just get into kidnapping and ransom. Plus, have you seen some of the production values on those ransom/beheading videos? Those aren't cheap to produce.

I'm sorry for what happened to her, because it was probably horrific at the end, but she made some incredibly foolish choices.

According to the articles I read, her Syrian boyfriend had been asked to go into Syria to do some IT work for a hospital there that was having problems with its computer systems. Kayla, having no particular skill set that was needed in Syria, wanted to go along just to see what the war zone was like. The boyfriend says he tried to talk her out of it, but she insisted, so they agreed on a plan if anything went wrong: Kayla was supposed to say she was the boyfriend's wife, since he was Syrian and he believed that the militants wouldn't kill a Syrian wife. They went into Syria, and the people at the hospital were appalled that Kayla had come; they too thought it was foolish and dangerous. On the way out, the couple gets nabbed, and for some reason Kayla tells the militants that she and the boyfriend aren't married. So now to them she's just an American whore, and her fate is basically sealed.

It's hard to understand why anybody would do what she did. It would be different if she was a doctor or nurse or somebody with some desperately needed skills, but she was essentially just an onlooker. Her friends claimed she wanted to see conditions in Syria so she could blog about them, but there is no reason she couldn't have reported what her boyfriend saw. She didn't need to expose herself to the danger of going into Syria as an unmarried American woman traveling with a man. It was incredibly stupid.

Instead of complaining about the U.S. government not paying ransom for Kayla, maybe her family should be going to universities and telling other social-justice-warrior wannabes just how dangerous a place the real world is for gullible do-gooders who can't comprehend the savagery of Islamic fanaticism.

Back in olden times, when I was much younger, I wanted a sail boat; wanted to live on board the boat in the caribbean. Unfortunately, that was just about the time that the illegal drug trade was making big bucks, and living on board a yacht made you a target. Tom Clancy wrote a book about it. Even before the book, I knew it wasn't safe to travel outside the US. That was back in the sixties well before 'Smugglers Blues' became popular.

I'm pretty sure we discussed this when it happened but they had intell to save more than just her. Not only is that a practical good, but if they killed all the kidnappers in the raid that might send a signal that we actually give a damn about our citizens.

Yes, that's the part that aggravates me the most: that she went into a Syrian war zone as a tourist, a rubber-necker, a looky-loo. Just wanted to look around so she could tell her friends she'd been there. That was beyond stupid.

One of the articles I read, that gave the boyfriend's version of events, said that the Syrian hospital personnel were appalled when Kayla showed up. (The boyfriend claimed that the hospital had pre-approved her visit, but the hospital denied it to the magazine. I believe the hospital people. Why would they want her there? She had nothing to offer, and would just be a nuisance and a danger to have around, and they had enough to deal with already.) They couldn't believe that this silly American woman would do something so foolish as sneak into a war zone.

Of course, none of that justifies those savages in kidnapping and murdering her, but adults should be able to exercise some minimal level of common sense, and Kayla (for whatever reason) just didn't do that.
