Weekend Open Thread: Wow [Y-not]

Stolen from our good friends at Hot Gas, here's a story that you may have missed:

North Carolinian Steve Cooksey had gone through an intense personal journey he wanted to share with the world. He had been obese, diagnosed with Type II Diabetes, and almost keeled over, but emerged from his near-death experience to adopt a simple, "Caveman" or paleo diet of meat, nuts, and veggies along with exercise. He lost a lot of weight, felt great and healthy, and wanted to share with the world, so he started a blog, wherein he dispensed advice about food and fitness. Recipes, grocery lists, general advice.

The state of North Carolina declared this illegal "counseling and assessing" without a license provided by the state. For three years, he has been fighting for the right to blog without a license.

Go over to Mary Katharine Ham's post at Hot Air to learn what happened. (Then come back here to discuss!)

Short answer: the "Caveman" blogger won. Finally.

Often when I see these sorts of stories in the "conservo-sphere" I assume there's some back-story involved that helps explain (or mitigates) what looks like an egregious abuse of power. But I have to say I can't come up with any reasonable explanation for trying to regulate a blogger's speech in this way.

He doesn't appear to be selling anything or representing himself as a medical expert or anything of that sort. What gives, North Carolina?

Get yourself set up in a market niche.

Lobby your representatives to set up a licensing bureaucracy.

Freeze out any competition who won't adhere to rules that you set up for your advantage.

Self-serving and rent seeking actions from the get go.

It happens all over the economy - big and small companies alike engage in it.

I worked for a Fortune 500 company that couldn't wait to cement its advantage through government regulation once it had a leg up on anybody else.

215 Colorado Alex, it was a fairly long post by zombie sometime last week. I don't know how to search the blog. The long and the short of it was that they did a test on native Eskimos that moved to the city. Those that stayed in their villages did not wash with soap on a daily basis and had uniformly low cholesterol numbers. Those that moved to the city and bathed with soap daily saw their numbers go up. More intricate than that, but that's the gist.

The thing is it does nothing. Every guy remembers what it is like to be 14-17 and you are scouring the kitchen looking for food- any food. And you come across a can of mushrooms your mom has had for 5 years and you think: "Mushrooms and macadamia nuts?"

Sex and food are THE twin drives for guys that age (actually you can argue about other ages, but they are an imperative then.) If you are into sports and/or working out, it is even worse.

I think the explanation was: soap removes the natural oils from your skin, therefore the body mobilizes stored fats from the liver to the skin to replace the lost oil. The mobilized oil moves through the blood, so if a person's blood cholesterol is tested, it reads higher than a person who's skin has retained the natural oils. Not sure if it's true, but that's the theory, anyway.

248 Correlation, causation, moving from remote Alaskan village to urban location with grocery stores where shampoo is easily obtained shows higher cholesterol levels.

However with the global reach of grocery distribution systems, even remote Alaskan villages have access to modern urban processed food.

So, the higher cholesterol levels must be caused by daily shampoo use because remote villages don't have indoor plumbing, and it's too cold to shower in the winter time unless you can afford to fire the sauna once a week or so, but firewood is difficult to obtain, so you need access to well head waste gases that are associated with the destruction of the environment by drilling for oil.

See? It all makes sense.

Unless a person is sweating profusely or working in a really dirty job, many people don't need to use soap every day. Every other day or so might be sufficient. Same thing for washing hair; mine is almost to my waist, and if I wash it every day, it gets dry and crackly b/c it can't replenish the natural oils fast enough. And before you ask, I smell just fine.

Friend who's a Mary Kay consultant has said that some people think they have naturally oily skin and wash very frequently, are actually washing too much. The body freaks out, thinking that the skin has no oil and produces even more oil to compensate. From my perspective, she's right. I used to think I had oily skin, then started washing my face only 1x a day with gentle soap, and my acne cleared right up.

Posted by: right wing whippersnapper at February 21, 2015 06:24 PM (ThxKk)

264 Yeah Eskimos that move to the cities eat the same as in villages, the only change is using soap? Although it might possibly true that washing off skin oils does increase cholesterol in the blood, its not like that is very correlated to heart disease anyway.

But unless they did a control vs some researcher lobbing WAGs as to why the cholesterol would be different it sounds worse than most of the CAGW junk science.

Posted by: PaleRider at February 21, 2015 06:24 PM (7w/kf)

265 #237 The thing was, the Inuits in the wild were eating almost only blubber, which *should* have raised their cholesterol according to the fat-in-diet theory, but they had really low levels. Which became quite high whenever they moved to the city --- even a typical city diet has less fat than pure blubber. One big difference in lifestyle was that in the wild they almost never bathed, and when they did they didn't use soap, whereas in the city they tended to take daily showers with soap.

Not that correlation is causation, just that usage of soap was theorized by some guy to account for the vastly different levels of cholesterol.

Sort of related side note, my dermatologist recommends that you use soap sparingly and mostly for places that really need to be clean, because it removes natural oils and tends to make the skin excessively dry for many people. He's been in the business for a long time and seems to know his stuff.

267 I got the new National Geographic today. I haven't read it yet, but it is a theme issue: "The War on Science".

Featured articles are:
Climate Change Does Not Exist
Evolution Never Happened
The Moon Landing Was Fake
Vaccinations Can Lead To Autism
Genetically Modified Food Is Evil

As I said, I haven't read it yet. I'm sure there's some good stuff in there. But NG has been banging the Glowbull Warmening drum for years, so I'll probably have to take blood pressure medication before reading that article, even though I don't have high blood pressure.

"Climate Change Does Not Exist." Really? Who exactly is making that claim? I'm not just an AGW skeptic but a flat-out denier, and part of my argument has always been, "The climate has always changed and always will. What's so special about the present time?"

I don't know, but I strongly suspect that changes in dietary cholesterol intake would likely be offset by corresponding changes in that endogenously produced, what with the homeostatic mechanisms in place for so many physiological compounds.

Amen and hurrah.

I am still much more onboard with the idea that the earth is a giant complex system of competing reactions in equilibrium. Ex. More CO2=>More plants.

It is a such a large, open, and intricate system, that I have issues with us being able to correctly model it at this point in any serious fashion. It is like asking a caveman to explain how a Saturn V rocket works. He may be able to grasp the basic principle, but he cannot grasp the complexity and nuance.

Humans are fleas compared to the size of the system. I also tend to agree with those that say the gigantic thermonuclear reaction (The Sun) constantly going off above our heads can probably (sarc) have more effect on our overall climate than we can.

I am not saying that we do not have an effect (just like all bodies with mass exert gravitational pull on all other bodies) it is just that it is smaller and we have no idea how the system reacts to our presence.
