6 A great battle, and both sides fought very hard.

That being said, we could have taken the island earlier except for the strategic genius of MacArthur.

18 Uncommon valor was a common virtue.

That "uncommon" is key for the Medal of Honor.

These are not Purple Hearts. Those latter can shade into Darwin Awards depending on how you get 'em. (Or, worse, into Kerry Awards.) You don't get the Medal of Honor for racking up enemy bodycounts, either.

You get those medals for bravery that ensures the success of the mission. You get them for fighting smart.

A lot of good men died on that beach. Much better men than I can really comprehend.

Not exactly. The caption was something to the effect that after Pearl Harbor was the was one of vengeance for many Americans, while for many of the Japanese it was a struggle to preserve their unique culture. That as close to the exact wording as I can remember. Strictly speaking, entirely accurate, while being pretty misleading if you didn't know the rest of the story.

67 "correct me if I'm remembering this incorrectly, but didn't the Smithsonian c 1994 have an exhibit that blamed America for cultural imperialism against Japan?"

It was after they had restored the _Enola Gay_. And yep, it was every bit as bad as you might have imagined.

Got the story from one of the docents.

Something little understood is that the Smithsonian's aircraft collection has benefited hugely over the years from grizzled retired Airframe & Powerplant mechanics who had personally worked on those birds decades earlier. They brought their professional tradecraft into the loop. Sometimes showing up toting technical manuals and miscellaneous small parts that can no longer be found anywhere.

When they heard what the moonbat liberal curators had cooked up by way of accompanying "commentary" and "nuance" to the Hiroshima bomber, 80% of them, who had all been working pro bono as a labor of love and honor, downed tools and cleaned up and left the restoration shop, not to return. A huge blow to the collection's efforts from that point on.

I think the WWII generation, who grew up during the depression, dustbowl, etc. came back from the war and decided that that life would not be their children's. So they made sure that their children would want for nothing and have all the opportunities they never had. They had the best of intentions, but it did not help.

Plus, the infiltration of the institutions had begun.

127 102 - I have pondered that question myself for many years. The best answer I've come up with is that the tough-as-nails generation, the ones who fought and won a world war across the globe - they saw too much and did not ever want their children to have to see it.

They thought they were fighting the last world war and that the world their children would inherit would be a better place.

But because the kids had no idea how hard fought and precious that freedom they'd been handed really was, it was easy - too easy - to mock it and trash it.

And so here we are.

133 51 The Jihadis would do poorly. The Japanese Army of WWII did not quit. Some surrendered in the 1960s!

Look at how they outmaneuvered, outfought and outsmarted the more numerous British Empire troops in Malaysia and Singapore. In general they were brutal in victory (look up the Battle of Hong Kong and the Japanese Army in Borneo).

By Iwo Jima they had figured out how to neutralize the great advantage in equipment the US troops had. The Japanese tried to kill as many US troops as they could, without any hope of victory.

Our landing sites on Kyushu, and the timing, were figured out by the Japanese. We had no surprise against a much larger force, including 11,000 Kamikaze aircraft aimed at the transports.

Good thing we dropped every nuclear bomb we had. A lot of American and Japanese lives were saved by those weapons.

I try to point out that the entire Boomer cohort was not made up of noisy lefty campus radicals.

What happened was that the latter group of Boomers got the vast majority of the media attention.

Because the media had tilted left long before the rest of the country even started in that direction. It was predominantly left even before Gramsci began blueprinting the 'long march'.

Every generation has its share of heroes and dirtbags. Every generation. No exceptions.

While some of the WWII generation were fighting for our freedom, others were undermining our society as part of the Communist conspiracy.

Some Boomers fought in Vietnam, and when they got home, they were spat on by other Boomers.

I am very partial to the book "The Fourth Turning". The authors have an interesting theory about how history moves in roughly 80-year cycles.

They say that the Millennial generation is analogous to the WWII generation.

I'm sure that in the 1930s, older people probably despaired at the silly unserious jitterbugging kids. Yet just a few years later, those same kids were flying B-17s and storming the beach at Tarawa.

After reading that book, I'm keeping my eye on the Millennials. Some of them fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. I'm not selling them short.

215 some Iwo trivia.

By this stage of the war, Japan knew US had *far* too much fire power to allow Japanese troops to fight in the open. So they knew they would be in bunkers the whole battle. Marine knew it too and almost all the riflemen went in with the M1 carbine instead of the rifle. better in cramped spaces.

--------

Japanese commander had studied previous Marine assaults and was able to predict their schedule. He chose not to oppose the landing and waited a couple of hours until there was maximum congestion on the beach... THEN he had his artillery fire.

--------

The Japanese positions inside Mt. Suribachi (vast and complex - SIX LEVELS) were never captured. Marines closed off the entrances. To this day, nobody has gone in.

And I'm the proud son of one, a member of the 4th Marine Division, who participated in the operations on Saipan, Tinian, Roi Namur, and of course Iwo Jima - where he was awarded a battlefield promotion. Of the 240 men who landed, 40 survived unwounded. Forty.)

237 @229...may he RIP, Jay. I am so glad my Daddy died just days before the reign of the Purple-lipped Pouty Prancercizer. Although he would have laughed at the tardisil...it has to nearly kill these brave men who see this now after freeing the world from Hitler and the Emperor. I rage for them.

My Daddy was the kindest, most generous, funniest, good man alive. Best father award. His innate kindness was who I was looking for and found in my husband. He and Daddy met only four days before our wedding, as we were in college out of state, and the wedding was at home in Mississippi. And I married a Yankee to complete the picture. He and my father hit it off immediately. Of course, upon meeting him, Daddy told him he should know "he was getting the short end of the stick." People loved him for his humor, but also his goodness. He thought I hung the moon, and he told my husband I was a "pistol." I am a very lucky Duchess.

There was never a day I doubted my father's love. Moron men: teach and show that for your daughters (and sons).

I was my father's only daughter. I did not date much in HS, not because I got hit by the ugly stick, but because most of the "boys" were goobers who wanted to wrestle in the drive-in and, crap, I would rather watch tv with parents or read a good book. The very few boys I dated never were greeted at the door by Daddy. He never met them and left it to my mother. He never waited up for me, either. I asked him why, long after I was married, and he said he trusted me and felt I could "take care of myself" (in other words, he knew I would physically harm someone if they messed with me, I guess). If you have a father you can still talk to, be thankful, and call him tomorrow. xoxo

243 I am writing a magazine article on Col. Harry Liversedge who lead the 28th RCT on IJ. They had responsibility for the far left flank (Green Beach) including Mt. Suribachi (where they famously raised that flag). The 28th landed and then, with the courageous examples of Col. Liversedge and his XO, jumped up under fire and raced the 800 yards across the island to cut-off Suribachi from Japanese reinforcements. They ended up spending 6 weeks in constant combat on that island.
Initial estimates were that it would take 4 days.

I strongly recommend "The Lions of Iwo Jima' to those of you who want a real close-up view of what happened on 'Sulfur Island'.
I had uncles who landed on Tarawa, Saipan and Pelileu and also fought in the Battle of Okinawa. Those men and their comrades are like gods to me and I can't write this without crying.
God blessed us when He gave us such people.

244 A late friend of mine (passed away in December 2012) was an 18 year old who joined the USMC the day after Pearl Harbor. The Marines thought they needed paratroopers so he was trained as on at Gillespie Field San Diego; by June '42, the USMC figured they didn't need paratroopers. Larry went ashore at Guadalcanal; then again at Tarawa, and finally at Iwo Jima. Stayed in the reserves after WW II and as the cherry on the sundae of his "high school graduation trip", he was at Chosin Reservoir in Korea.

But like a lot of the vets who stayed alive through the wars, he came home, had a career (as an insurance sales executive) married and raised a family. He didn't talk much about what he'd done. But I never doubted he'd do it again without regrets.
