Quote of the Day

People who create things nowadays can expect to be prosecuted by highly moralistic people who are incapable of creating anything. There is no way to measure the chilling effect on innovation that results from the threats of taxation, regulation and prosecution against anything that succeeds. We'll never know how many ideas our government has aborted in the name protecting us.

Extremist Randomly Shoots People for No Apparent Reason in Copenhagen

And synagogues are about as random of a target as you could possible have. </sarc>

Only 22 years old Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein was already a known wolf to the police.

Danish police said they killed a man early Sunday who they think was responsible for killing two people and injuring five in shootings at a freedom of speech event and a synagogue in Copenhagen.

Note that El-Hussein was born and raised in Denmark and may not have acted alone.

The Atlantic Article "What ISIS Really Wants" That Everyone is Talking About

Definitely worth reading. The key takeaway is that ISIS truly has an apocalyptic vision - in the original sense of the word - of bringing about the end times as foretold in the Koran. All of their murders and cruelty and fanaticism are designed to force a final confrontation with Rome, infidels and all other enemies of Islam in their version of the battle of Armageddon:

The Islamic State has attached great importance to the Syrian city of Dabiq, near Aleppo. It named its propaganda magazine after the town, and celebrated madly when (at great cost) it conquered Dabiq's strategically unimportant plains. It is here, the Prophet reportedly said, that the armies of Rome will set up their camp. The armies of Islam will meet them, and Dabiq will be Rome's Waterloo or its Antietam.

...Now that it has taken Dabiq, the Islamic State awaits the arrival of an enemy army there, whose defeat will initiate the countdown to the apocalypse.

By the Way, There Is No Such Thing As 'Presidents Day'

Legally today's holiday is Washington's Birthday.

There is no federal Presidents Day. It's a myth. The United States as a whole does not have such a holiday. There is a federal holiday Monday, but it's called "Washington's Birthday." It's right there in the Office of Personnel Management's list of federal days off for 2015. If you click through and look, you'll notice it has an asterisk, which leads to a note of explanation.

"This holiday is designated as 'Washington's Birthday' in section 6103(a) of title 5 of the United States Code, which is the law that specifies holidays for Federal employees," writes OPM. "Though other institutions such as state and local governments and private businesses may use other names, it is our policy to always refer to holidays by the names designated in the law."

The Old White Party is in Trouble

Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and Scott Walker average 45 in age.
Throw in Chris Christie, Mitt Romney, and Jeb Bush, and the average is still only 52. That's prime time for a presidential candidate, unless you are Ronald Reagan. If you see a Reagan among any of them, better switch to sarsaparilla, because you've been drinking too much.

...There is something ghoulish about Joe Biden. As vice president, he is technically the President of the Senate. That means he has been in the Senate for more than 42, except for the five days between the end of his sixth term in the Senate on January 15, 2009, and the beginning of his vice presidency on January 20, 2009.

To put that in perspective, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio were still in diapers when he entered the Senate. Someone should tell Joe that we ended the draft, recognized China, and found out who shot J.R. since then. Joe has been there so long that Elvis was still alive when he took the oath of office. Abortion was illegal in 46 states.

Why the Future Won't Be Spoken in Mandarin

Some may protest that it is not English but Mandarin Chinese that will eventually become the world's language, because of the size of the Chinese population and the increasing economic might of their nation. But that's unlikely. For one, English happens to have gotten there first. It is now so deeply entrenched in print, education and media that switching to anything else would entail an enormous effort. We retain the QWERTY keyboard and AC current for similar reasons.

Also, the tones of Chinese are extremely difficult to learn beyond childhood, and truly mastering the writing system virtually requires having been born to it. In the past, of course, notoriously challenging languages such as Greek, Latin, Aramaic, Arabic, Russian and even Chinese have been embraced by vast numbers of people. But now that English has settled in, its approachability as compared with Chinese will discourage its replacement. Many a world power has ruled without spreading its language, and just as the Mongols and Manchus once ruled China while leaving Chinese intact, if the Chinese rule the world, they will likely do so in English.

What's Up With Sex Ed Types and Sex with Kids?

The former Ontario deputy education minister who oversaw the development of a controversial sex-ed program before facing child sex charges will plead guilty to a number of those charges.
Benjamin Levin, born 1952, was arrested in 2013 in the wake of an international child porn sting that led to his North York doorstep. He was not only accused of making and distributing child pornography, but also of arranging for a sexual offense with a child, and with possessing and accessing child pornography.

Texas Gives Amnesty to Cupcakes

Schoolchildren will once again be able to enjoy cupcakes and brownies.

Texas' new Agricultural Commissioner, Sid Miller, granted amnesty to cupcakes as his first act of office.

"I'm announcing that I am giving full amnesty to the cupcakes in Texas. I'm also granting full pardon to pies and cookies and brownies and cakes and homemade candies," Miller said in his announcement.

In Texas, the Department of Agriculture administers the school lunch program responsible for restrictive dietary guidelines. Guidelines were put in place to combat childhood obesity, but as Miller points out, the figures haven't changed in the ten years stringent dietary restrictions have been in place.

"We're getting out of the school mandate business," Miller said.

18 Completely off topic. FS and I were in bed sleeping and the cat comes in and is jumping like crazy all over the bed. We turned on the light and there is a bat flying around the room. We're both hiding under the covers as the bat keeps hitting the covers. We finally knocked it down with one of the covers but we don't know where it is. We just left the room and went to sleep downstairs. We figured out it got in through the chimney flue which has been open since who knows when. I'm now completely awake as is FS who has to get up at 5:30 to get to work. I'm sure the bat is more scared than we were but this would be my "Winston Smith" thing-a bat flying around hitting me and I'm too unnerved to try to find it now. We shut the door. I guess we'll have to look for it tomorrow.

65 On the James Sorban thing...

If you bother to read history, and think a bit... you will notice that the more FREE the society, the faster it progresses in technology and innovation.

From the Greeks... who gave their philosophers freedom to think... to the Dark ages, when things did NOT progress... to the renaissance... to England's Golden Age... to America...

History shows that the more free we are... the more we progress, and the better off we are.

Which is why the US Government current power grab... is so troubling... as they say they are grabbing power to progress us... when History show the exact opposite will be true.

70 BTW, while our liberal-leftist MFM was going apeshit about then-mayor Rob Ford's drug use (that was overwhelmingly booze and an unknown intake of pot), they let the pederast former Deputy Minister of Education and then bigwig at the college that teaches teachers (OISE) have a free run reporting-wise.

The current, lesbian Premier (a provincial "prime minister") was his Minister of Education overseer at the time and she wasn't asked any hard-hitting questions during the recent election about this. Her defence to the few weak-tea questions she was asked was that she didn't know him that well (shades of Ayers); and that the Deputy Minister didn't have any input into creating curriculum!

BTW, her previous government was forced to rescind its "gay-friendly" curriculum due to parental backlash. We'll see about that now that she has a new majority government for the next four years.

One ray of hope regarding her personally at least is that the cops and the MFM are starting to investigate her over several scandals that might bring down her personally at least. BTW, Levin's brother is Canada's ambassador to Cuba.

Sutton was a bank-robber, who's famous for being asked why he robbed banks and responding, "Because that's where the money is."

Likewise, an Islamist will shoot up a synagogue or a kosher market because that's where the Jews are.

One thing about mohammedans and The Bomb. The West invented and built The Bomb from scratch in less than 5 years. The mohammedans in Pakistan took 26 years to build a bomb from when they started the program in '72, by building on the knowledge base created by the West.

Iran has been working on it for almost 40 years, and while they're close, they still aren't there yet.

You'd just have to be willing to ride the hoist up to the 'copter. Be it by sling, basket or jungle-penetrator. I've done the third, but it's not for the faint of heart.

134 There was an interesting article on Catalan that I read once, as a side note it mentioned that the reason Castillian (Spanish as we know it) was so widely adopted in the Iberian peninsula (during the reconquest) was that it used a fairly standardized Romance vocabulary, and a simplified Basque-type pronunciation, and so it was pretty understandable by everyone who spoke a Romance language, so it was adopted by nearly everyone because it really belonged to no-one.

English is kind of the same. I've known a lot of adult ESL students who all state that linguistically and syntactically English is pretty simple, especially since the verbs are simple, the main problem is for asian language and Spanish speakers who have trouble with some of the sounds, and of course everyone thinks the spelling makes no sense.

The syntax is very simple, as English is almost not inflected at all (compared to, e.g, German or Russian). How many native speakers of English can use who/whom correctly? Shit, 90% of contemporary English speakers can't use "lose/loose" or apostrophes (apostrophe's?) correctly.

And...the woman's last name is "Pease-Takes Horse"

So if a Hispanic dropped a robot on a Vietmamese guy's toes, the first words from both sides would all be in Bosnian....until, as the wronged party, the Vietnamese guy started talking about the Hispanic's clumsy family of fuckups in Spanish.

I have to admit I cannot quite fathom the Iranians, and where they fit into all this. I mean, there are allegedly wide swaths of the populace who categorically reject the leadership. And it is generally considered among Shi'ites around the rest of the world, that the Iranians are doing their own little thing.
Honestly, I believe there are many in both Iran and among the radical Sunnis who want to pretend their worldview is based on 7th century thinking, when in fact their intellectual underpinnings are straight out of the same 19th century teachings that gave us the fascists and the commies.

If I can rely on Dave Barry, the plot involves her NOT wanting to engage in the bondage nonsense, and when she finally gives in and does it, she freaks out and breaks up with him.

In that sense, the "romance" is that she gave it all she had, until she could give no more, and it's all sad and stuff because he was otherwise such a great catch. If not for the whips and chains business.

The fiancee somehow managed to mess-up her left shoulder to the point where she couldn't lift it above a stewardess "buh-bye!" When we got done with out latest round of idiocy, she went in to the doc and actually got a physical therapist referral. She's actually got her personal trainer double-teaming the issue and has been making good progress.

At first, her exercises involved grabbing things about waist level and pulling them out-in-front; out-on-side; out-in back; and out cross-body. Then they were a little higher -- about shoulder level. After that, she was supposed to toss a rope over a high bar and pull her arm higher with the rope. Then there was laying on the couch and doing curls with the couch's arm. The latest involves an elastic band from some heavy furniture and her laying crossways on our bed -- I immediately labeled it "50 shades of PT".

252 Madame Mayhem, I used to feel the same way as you on books. But then I tried to read Anne Rice's The Witching Hour. It was... okay, for the first few hundred pages. And then it veered off into the history of the Mayfair Family. I got about three hundred pages into that part before I went, "Arrgh, how long is this going to drag on?"

I flipped ahead to see where that part ended and the story got going again, and I saw I wasn't even halfway through that dry, clinical, boring family history. I threw the book across the room, and left it there on the floor until I moved a year and a half later.

Ever since then, if I find a book boring and I don't expect it to get any better, I just say "Screw it; I'm done."

I don't see any mention of the Wheel of Time books. I made it through
book nine before I gave up. There was never going to be a resolution. At
least Tolkien wrapped up LoTR in three books, four if you count The
Hobbit.

Posted by: Old Blue at February 16, 2015 11:54 PM (vVSOO)

Sanderson stretched things out, but there was resolution eventually. Jordan wrote the chapter "The Last Battle" in A Memory of Light (Book 14) before he died, and it was quite good. The death of one of the main characters was well done and very fitting.

I am the same damn way. At some point, I think you also keep marching on to see how much worse it can possibly get!

The YA Paranormal/Urban Fantasy genre is chock-full of series, and I have wasted more time the last two years slogging through abject crap than I care to admit, all in the name of trying to remain somewhat relevant in my nieces' lives!

Do not, under ANY circumstances, start in on the Morganville Vampire series or the Celestra Series by Addison Moore. Celestra may be the worst thing I have ever read.

And do not subscribe to Book Hub, either.

Little did I know that he kept stringing the story along to get me to buy more books and that he was NEVER going to bring the story to a conclusion. So he could sell me more books. I should have known better, but no, I kept reading looking for the end.

Turns out that it's ten and I think it follows the primary character all the way from pre WWII Shanghai to Korea. And the biggest part of the story is how all these Marines are humping like bunny rabbits. Now, being an ex-sailor, I can kind of see that, but really? It took him five books just to get to Guadalcanal. The Marines couldn't fight the war. They were too busy humping all the girls. We could have won the war in the Pacific two years earlier.

So this Indian guy- who was a good actor- says about this cooking utensil he's using: "You dumb ignoramus. It's not a spoon. It's ladle. You don't even know what a ladle is." Something about his saying that in some Indian accent made me laugh my head off as did his wearing a frilly apron he's borrowed from his wife. My friend said the Indian actor didn't know how to pronounce "ignoramus" before he told him. He seems like a law key kind of guy normally so maybe he doesn't call people "ignoramuses"

Yawn. Brian's just another bigoted, shit-filled "progressive" with tons of fantasies. All based on HATRED of anyone who disagrees with his politics, HATRED of anyone who's ever made a dime more than him, and HATRED of conservatives and capitalism, all backed up by a bajillion stupid biased articles that his drug-addled brain thinks represent Ultimate Truth.

But then the Democratic Party has always been built on NOTHING but irrational hatred. Hatred of blacks who wouldn't submit to slavery pre-Lincoln, hatred of the rich, hatred of Jews, hatred of Christianity, hatred of capitalism. Oh and hey Brian: does this statement offend you? Tough shit. It's no more ridonkulous than any of the "facts" you present about Repubs. But then Brian and most of his "progressive" pals wouldn't know a fact if Harry Reid's pedophile dick jammed one down their necks.

Actually, Tolkien didn't. LOTR was presented to the publisher as a 1500 page doorstop. There was a paper shortage causing serious price hikes for book production, so the publisher chose to break it up into three parts in hopes prices would come back down again before it was time to print the second and with the option to not release the second and third if the first didn't do good business. So, it was a complete work when it hit the stores, just not for the punters.

I have no idea what sorts of BDSM is actually in the novel, but I'm guessing its severely toned down in the movie. I figure if they were to actually show the scenes it would have been NC-17 and women would never see it after word of mouth got around. Its one thing to have your minds eye picturing the "rough" sex, its different to actually see it happening.

So since the Atlantic article was linked again - but drawing just on ace's earlier excerpts - this:

"well intentioned but dishonest campaign to deny IS's medieval religious nature"

"Well intentioned but dishonest"? WTF? A bit of substantive, not just stylistic, tension there. And ridiculous. There's no real meaning to "well intentioned" any more if, in relation to seriouspublic issues, good intentions can be ascribed to peoplesaying patently untrue or silly things for no apparent reason other than their own ignorance/incompetence and/or to mollify their ignorant/idiotic followers.

But much worse:

"theology that must be understood to be combatted"

Commonplace, yet utter nonsense. IS hasn't taken one village due to the power of its "theology". It has taken it by brute force, terror, bribery, etc. - the normal tools of conquest, and especially in that region.

National Socialism's ideology didn't have to be understood to not just be combatted, but annihilated. Ditto Imperial Japanese chauvinism. Ditto Al Qaeda. Ditto the Ba'ath Party of Iraq. Ditto, without much actual shooting, Soviet communism. Ditto ..... any force/entity/group/state that may sport some colorful beliefs, but can be destroyed. And the Nazis, Imperial Japanese, and Soviets had ideologies, however wacky, whose heftdo make IS' fringefantasies like Jonestown in comparison.

So presumably the author is just engaging in a very familiar sort of lazy formulaic statement that also makes his analysis more practically important. His analysis is fine. But IS's theology will not save it from decisive force if such is brought to bear, and IS's success depends almost entirely on its own use of force and other mundane things like $$$, not its theology, which will never appeal to more than a fringe.

I generally don't respond to a LOT of BS I find objectionable at FB. You're right, 'tis better for the blood pressure and my general health. But this guy just was filibustering and filibustering and I finally lost it.

The vast majority of my friends at FB are completely non-political and I very much hope they don't see a lot of this stuff. I worry it intimidates them about me, that they'll become afraid if they offer me chocolate cookies instead of peanut butter cookies I'll go off on them too. But I won't. At the same time, and on this *one* topic pretty much, I *just have* to let off the steam sometimes.

Having said that, there are a few people I could just block, rather than unfriend, and that would help me get most of the disagreeable politics out of my thread forever.

Aces & Ales and Lotus of Siam are both good.

I also recommend the Crown & Anchor.

Some other great off-strip restaurants:

Vila Algarve
Chicago Brewpub
Forte
Mr. Sandwich.
Paymon's
Hash House A Go Go
Heart Attack Grill
Buldogis

Spring Valley West of the Strip has a plethora of Korean, Japanese, Chinese, vietnamese, &c Restauraunts. A Lee's opened up a couple of years ago.

I don't recommend Bachi Burger. It's not bad, but it is a bit pretentious in its price.

446 5 Science Fiction Goes Full Tumblr

So a limp-wristed homosexual Italian Muslim tranny dinosaur walks into a bar... No, this is not a lame joke. It's worse. It is a Hugo-nominated 'short story' by a Nebula award winner.

More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=8273

I already wrote a posted a parody of that award-winning "short story" quite a few weeks ago.

No way I can track down the comment link, but by a fluke I still have the text of the parody!

(For the uninitiated, an absurd "SJW"-type fantasy poem about a dinosaur killing white Christian toothless cisnormative rapists is winning all sort of sci-fi literary awards.)

Here is the parody:

-------

If You Were a Chipmunk

If you were a chipmunk you would be a five-foot-eleven-inch chipmunk that stood up on its hind legs and bared its chipmunky incisors and I would build a hutch for you and sleep under it wearing my pink seersucker tutu.

If you were a chipmunk you would be the hottest coolest chipmunk in the known world, that is the new magical world of equality and egalitarian equalness which is now ruled by extremely perfect special rulers.

If you were a chipmunk and I were a chipmunk admirer I would lead you on a golden chipmunk chain that was totally unlike the chains of slavery or other types of oppression out into the dark forest of white people.

If you were a chipmunk and I were someone who jacked off majestically while thinking of chipmunks I would lead you into that dark forest where boorish bad-old-boy rednecks waved rifles around and chewed snuff.

If you were a chipmunk and I was an avid egalitarian chipmunk supporter I would lead you into that dark forest with your sharpened chipmunky chipmunk teeth so you could tear out the throats of all the people on the following list who ever since the dawn of time voted for Ted Cruz; here are their home addresses so you can burn their houses down with your chipmunky matches held in your chipmunky paws.

Next, buy minnow nets and make it a family game of Bat-Minton! Everyone grabs a net and the first one who catches the bat (not easy and you have to flip the minnow net over just right when you get the little bastard) The winner gets exp: the next movie shown is their choice - then it truly gets ugly...

Last when your little Chiroptera is in his/her net securely, you run down the street and let him loose like a loon!

Yes they can get behind ANYTHING. Think mouse and how flat they can get to get into spaces - bats have made a science of it. I was lounging in my parlor one sunset when the oil painting in front of me started to move. I won Bat-Minton that night.

Lastly, COEXIST.

Not so far. She is on the second issue of her own book. The tone is goofy but the character is largely unchanged, desperately trying to pass as an ordinary human attending college despite the likelihood that she would be accepted if she let her tail out, so to speak.

She has now added Kraven the Hunter to her list of victories. At one juncture, deciding she needed a few seconds to think about how to handle the situation, she threw him high in the air, never considering that all she had to do was move aside and let him go splat.

Do tell!

The following completely unexpected incident happened in Oakland a couple years ago:

The Oakland Zoo has an exhibit of fruit bats. They (apparently) don't get rabies and don't bite people, being herbivores.

So one day a zoo volunteer teenage girl saw that a bat was on the outside of the fruit bat enclosure, and said to herself, "Gee how in the world did that fruit bat escape? I'd better put it back in the enclosure." Since it was her volunteer job to feed the fruit bats, so felt there was no danger.

So she went and picked up the bat, and as she was carrying it inside -- it bit her! And then it was revealed that the fruit bat enclosure was completely sealed, and nothing had escaped. She realized to her horror that by sheer coincidence a wild bat had roosted on the outside wall of the zoo's bat exhibit! Weird, eh?

And yes -- the wild biting bat had RABIES and she was infected.

But luckily they gave her the anti-rabies shots IMMEDIATELY, and so she survived without much ill effect.

Moral of the story: DON'T TOUCH THE BAT!

This is what she came up with, their Adopt-a-bat program to fun their rescue. They do great work, training people who do vet work on bats to handle and treat them safely and humanely--they help people like Fenelon get bats out of their houses, and little voiceless people like the bat in her bedroom, too when they get hurt. Bats really are useful pest controllers and i HATE mosquitoes!!!!
