Greece, Germany Spar Over Debt

Get this: Greece wants to not pay back the billions it has borrowed from Germany, and in fact would very much to like to borrow billions more (which it will also not repay, so I don't know what "borrow" means here), and Germany, for its part, would like its billions of dollars back, and definitely would not like to give Greece even more billions.

The EU is coming apart. All of Europe wanted to jack into Germany's super-stable currency and generally positive economic profile. But this was all Cargo Cult. They just wanted the benefits of German fiscal and economic policy. They didn't want to actually pursue the thrifty and responsible habits of the Germans that produces these economic benefits.

So for a decade, what these countries have been doing is spending just as insanely as they ever had, only now they were back-stopped with German currency. Oh, I know the call it a "Euro," but that Euro's value is guaranteed by German banks.

And Greece is now saying: We took money from you for a decade and wasted it, and we intend to waste billions more, and there's nothing you can do to stop us, except kick us out of the EU, which we know you won't do, so there's nothing you can do but continue to subsidize us like rotten, hooligan teenagers.

And while Germany is threatening Greece that they had better buckle down and get on some program that will bring them to a point of financial viability, they're like parents threatening their freeloading hooligan teenage kids: They're not going to carry out the threat and they know it.

So here's Greece saying "F*ck you old man, give me more money to spend on flashy cars and dirty women."

(Reuters) - Greece and its euro zone partners engaged in brinkmanship on Monday, with leftist Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras insisting his country would not extend its reform-linked bailout and Germany saying it would get no more money without such a program.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker warned Greeks not to expect the euro zone to bow to Tsipras' demands in a growing confrontation which spooked financial markets and prompted U.S. and Canadian pleas for calm and compromise.

Escalating the rhetoric, Greece's finance minister said the euro zone could collapse "like a house of cards" if Athens were forced out.

A Greek finance official said he did not believe Juncker, IMF chief Christine Lagarde or German Chancellor Angela Merkel would let Greece go bankrupt, but Merkel said Greece needed to come up with a sustainable proposal.

There's an old saying: If you owe a bank a million dollars, you've got a problem. But if you owe a bank a hundred million dollars, the bank has a problem.

Germany might have the problem here with Greece.

France, a country with northern-european charm and southern-european financial discipline, sides with Greece, because France is sucking billions of dollars out of Germany too and would also like More Billions of Free German Marks Too Please.

France expressed sympathy for the new Greek government's hope of renegotiating the tough terms of its bailout, amid growing international calls for Germany to rethink its austerity-heavy approach to the debt crises in Greece and Europe.

...

His comments--and similar remarks by President Barack Obama --are the latest example of a pushback in Europe and beyond against Berlin's handling of the eurozone debt crisis. Germany, Europe's biggest economy, has pressed since 2010 for tight fiscal and monetary policies as the best way to force other countries to adopt supply-side overhauls to make them more frugal and competitive...

This could turn into the fabled "Grexit," or "Greek Exit from the Euro Zone."

I hope so. This is ridiculous.

1) Kick Greece out.

3) Pay a visit, and by pay a visit I mean annexation.

235 Europe is in the middle of playing out the "white privilege" and "reparations" game that's happening here, but with slightly different skin tones and dog whistles.

Germany, in this parallel scenario, is the "white people" and a history of Naziism is the "slavery guilt" cited over here, and southern Europeans are the "minorities" and the bailouts are the "welfare" and the non-repayment of the billions are the "reparations."

It's just the same ol' "politics of envy" cycling over and over again: whoever succeeds is bled dry and parasitized by all surrounding cultures. Failure to subsidize layabout-ism is deemed by the layabouts as "racism" and "nationalistic bigotry."

The entire purpose of the EU is a sort modern version of The League of Nations, to prevent another nationalistic war breaking out in Europe, by unifying the entire continent into essentially one nation. The psychic scars from 1812, 1870, 1914 and 1939 still loom large. And in the last three instances, Germany was the aggressor. So they must now be tamed with a hundred parasitical cultures draining the workaholic Germans dry.

But how likely is Germany to now return to its aggressive past? Almost nil. About as likely as France will generate another Napoleon.

Germany should say "fuck you" to every other European economy and stop all bailouts. Let 'em collapse. They deserve it.

What exactly does Germany get from the EU? OK, trading partners, but if they're giving those partners the cash to buy German goods, then aren't the Germans in effect just giving them the goods? I know it doesn't look that way on paper, owing to the magic of accounting, but if you start writing off debts incurred by your trading partners, that's what it boils down to.

It seems to me that most of what Germany is getting is absolution for its WWII sins, but as memories of WWII fade, and that generation dies off, absolution might be pretty weak tea.

281 What exactly does Germany get from the EU? OK, trading partners, but if they're giving those partners the cash to buy German goods, then aren't the Germans in effect just giving them the goods? I know it doesn't look that way on paper, owing to the magic of accounting, but if you start writing off debts incurred by your trading partners, that's what it boils down to.

298 If I understand this, Greece is demanding Germany give them a bunch of money to pay off loans they took out previously. If Germany doesn't Greece defaults and German banks are in trouble.

So, Germany can give money to Greece who will give it to German banks. Then repeat the whole process in 3 - 4 Years.
Or, Germany can tell Greece to pound sand then give money to German banks to make up for the bad Greece loans.
I think in Merkel's shoes, I would go with the second option.

350 I'm going to take a completely contrarian view here:

Germany has benefited the most from the Eurozone. Instead of exporting at Deutsche Mark levels versus a deeply discounted Drachma, the Germans get the cheaper currency from the Eurozone. Hence, German exports are far more competitive within Europe than otherwise possible. In a similar vein, the free capital flow in the Eurozone allowed German banks to invest in more profitable countries (Greece, Southern Europe) while the going was good. This propped up German exports for the whole 2000s and first half of the 2010s.

Now that the periphery countries are bankrupt, the Germans want to keep the fiscal structure from the 2000s. This is very self-serving. The Germans loaned money to the Greeks to buy German goods. Now that the Greeks are bankrupt, the Germans want the Greek state to ruin itself to repay the money to the Germans. Instead of acting with prudence in the 2000s, the Germans want the export sales and the loan repayments, a benefit only possible because Greece was trapped in the same currency as Germany. The Germans want their cake, low Euro exchange rate, and to eat it too, no fiscal transfers to uncompetitive regions.

This is as if a developed US state, New York, wanted to be part of the US, without sending its tax dollars to an under-competitive state, say Vermont. That works as long as New York and Vermont are growing, when Vermont is doing poorly, it wants to renegotiate that deal.

Long story short, the Germans had this coming and I don't feel sorry for them.

Take a visit to Leipzig or other formerly East German cities. Germany has tons of their own internal problems and their economy isn't really all that when you compare it to ours.

368 There is no road out of debt for Greece. Even if they trimmed their social programs, which they won't, and collected all their taxes, which they won't, they could never get out of debt, not in 20 years.

The ONLY solution is, and has been, default, exiting the euro, and going back to the drachma. They will have a few more very tough years, but after that there is a chance for prosperity.

This cannot be avoided, only postponed as it has been three times already with more "restructuring" of the debt. The longer the necessary bankruptcy is deferred, the worse the pain will be. There is no way around it.

375 #350 - All very funny, except for the fact that Greece owes money they refuse to pay because they pay non-workers to sit on their asses.

Remember the Gods of the Copybook Headings.

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."

If you don't work you die.
You don't eat.
Greece stole from their own paybook to purchase the ease of the indigent and lazy. They owed, they did not pay, they deserve starvation.
Period.
Good try, too bad you're on the side of people who do not pay their debts.

The Greeks choose the Euro to get lower loans and, at least for the public, some hope at a decent government. They've only gotten ruin. They'll suffer enough for their errors.

I was just pointing out that the Germans are hardly innocent here, they are benefitting the most from the Euro. Euro makes them extremely competitive within Europe and protects German exports outside of Europe. That is why they won't leave and that is why the other countries (Italy, Spain, Greece, and maybe France) should leave.

This is the end game of Nazi guilt. The Germans are really obsessed with atoning for the sins of their great-grandfathers. They're culturally liberal, they get that WWI was a Bad Thing, and they are fairly desperate to show the world that they are not bad people.

So one of the things they try to do is buy off their guilt. They've propped up Southern Europe for decades. And what happened last summer when they said no fresh bailout for Greece?

The Greeks protested with posters of Merkel with a Hitler mustache.

Sooner or later they'll realize they can't buy their way out of Nazi guilt and they'll stop trying.

473 This is the end game of Nazi guilt.

There's an obvious lesson here. Don't lend to anyone who you know can't pay it back (student loans, looking at you) or anyone who you can't compel to pay you back (which is pretty much any government anywhere)

540 There was a time, when I was young, I kept a lock of hair of every woman I got familiar with. I always kept a pair of scissors on me. Even when I went to church, yes, there were my scissors in my pocket! We're men, after all; you never know what'll come along, do you?

"So, like that, I made a collection of locks of hair. There were dark ones, fair ones, ginger ones, even a few white ones. I collected such a lot, I stuffed a pillow with them. I stuffed the pillow I slept on-only in winter, though. In summer it made me too hot. Then, a bit later, I got fed up with that, too-you see, it began to stink, so I burned it."

The Greeks (and the rest of Europe) have made pretty clear that they'll hate the Germans no matter what, so why should the Germans bother trying to make nice?

I've made the same argument re the blacks and the Democrat Party. The smart strategy would be to be in the middle, so the two parties vie to give you what you want. When you're all-in for one side, neither side is inclined to do much for you: one has nothing to gain, the other has nothing to lose.

551 520 Greece could put the unemployed to work pitting olives. Why can Spain pit their olives but Greece can't?
Posted by: bergerbilder

Believe it or not, keeping olive intact with pits is a conscious marketing decision for most Greek olive farmers.

In the world of olive retailing, high-end top-quality olives are rarely if ever pitted; they are kept whole and intact for two reasons: To indicate their quality, and also to get more money per kilo of their highest-value product!

The medium-quality olives are almost always pitted and sold without pits, for recipes and so forth.

And the lowest quality olives are simply pressed to make olive oil, and not sold whole.

The Greek are proud that their olives are perceived as and are in fact higher quality than most olives grown elsewhere. Hence the standard practice in Greek not to pit most of their olives -- because they actually are in the top tier of best olives.

You're talking to someone whose job actually involves olive marketing!

Because the formal disintegration of the EU also vaporizes the life savings of most of Germany, which the Germans don't want to face up to (it's already happened, it's just a matter of recognizing it). Further the EU as a project is something the German government very much wants, regardless of whether the German people do. NEVER buy anything other than Extra Virgin.

It's just a term that means the oil was extracted entirely by mechanical means. And it's always by far the best.

It goes like like:

First pressing of fresh olives = Extra Virgin
Second/third pressing of those same olives = Virgin
Chemicals used to extract and separate the remaining oil from the crushed olive paste = regular ol' "olive oil."

Also, if you can get it buy olive oil that is "grown and packed in California." Why? Because most olive oil "imported from Italy" (or Spain) is in fact made from olives grown in North Africa or Turkey, and then shipped to Italy to be pressed, and then exported to America and the UK as "Italian" olive oil. But it's bogus -- a marketing ploy. The quality control and pesticide use laws in N. Africa and Turkey are atrocious compared to the quality control here.

But what about all the olives they really do grown in Italy and Spain? Ah -- they keep those for themselves! They slough off the crap olives on the Americans, with deceptive labeling. Seriously.

Next time you're in the store, carefully read the back of the label of any olive oil "imported from Italy (or Spain)." You will likely see, in tiny print, "Made with olives grown in Tunisia" or whatever.

As for Greek olive oil - -it's as good as the California olive oil, but actually quite difficult to get in the US - -that is, real true extra virgin greek olive oil. As with the other countries, they tend to consume the best stuff all domestically.

Oversimplification there. Grocers for example do quite well off EBT cards. There are other examples. It's not as efficient as private commerce but there is a postive ripple economically from welfare. Hair dressers and nail girls do real well also from my observations.

It comes nowhere close to ameliorating the damage done of course.

646 Was an excellent piece on Stratfor, behind a paywall, about why Germany has made their own bed in this case with having such an oversized part (over 50%) of their economy based on exports. That's great when times are good and you can loan money to your neighbors to buy your stuff (all in the same currency even), but that always depended on the very naive theory that the southern European economies, which have always been shaky, would suddenly become more responsible. Now they're faced with a hard leftist calling their bluff, and neither outcome is going to be good for Germany or the EU. Give in to Greek demands, then the rest of the PIGS will want a piece. Fail to give in to their demands, and the EU might collapse.

Olive oil is unsaturated, and hence subject to aerial oxidation that splits the carbon chain at the site of unsaturation into two smaller carboxylic acids. Examples of smallish carboxylic acids: butanoic acid (smells like armpit), caproic acid (responsible for the smell of goats), and hexanoic acid (a dead ringer for the smell of used sneakers).
Pro tip: exclude oxygen, and avoid even traces of such degradation.

Yep.

That's why I tend to recommend California olive oil. It's almost always the Real Thing, and not as rife with fraud. Also, California olive farmers have their own association and internal policing for quality: It's a valuable group-brand they all want to protect. No California grower will allow any other California grower to release crap olive oil, because it tarnishes the state's brand for everyone.

Posted by: Bob from table9

There's no specific cutoff date. As with all food, it slowly degenerates, quality-wise, over time. See Jay Guevara's comment above about oxygenization.

The sooner you use it, the better it will taste. But honestly if you still have some left over after a year, it won't hurt ya. Won't be as good is all.

Keep it cold and dark to make it last longer. Since it's already in a can, you got the dark part covered -- so keep the can in a cool place.

722 For millennia, fresh olive oil has been one of life's necessities-not just as food but also as medicine, a beauty aid, and a vital element of religious ritual. Today's researchers are continuing to confirm the remarkable, life-giving properties of true extra-virgin, and "extra-virgin Italian" has become the highest standard of quality.

But what if this symbol of purity has become deeply corrupt? Starting with an explosive article in The New Yorker, Tom
Here is the book
Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil
Mueller has become the world's expert on olive oil and olive oil fraud-a story of globalization, deception, and crime in the food industry from ancient times to the present, and a powerful indictment of today's lax protections against fake and even toxic food products in the United States. A rich and deliciously readable narrative, Extra Virginity is also an inspiring account of the artisanal producers, chemical analysts, chefs, and food activists who are defending the extraordinary oils that truly deserve the name "extra-virgin."

The exact same machines are used to shake WALNUT trees in California too!

But olives harvested that way are generally used for making OIL, and not eaten as table olives.

To harvest the best table olives you're supposed to pick them individually by hand. Which is what the small farmers do in Greece. You only pluck the ones that are perfectly ripe - -and leave the rest for later.

When you shake, you get ripe and unripe mixed together -- so they make it into oil.

Posted by: zombie at February 09, 2015 09:17 PM (K4YiS)

The big factors are oxygen and light, not temperature. Light of suitable frequency (near UV, IIRC) converts triplet oxygen into single oxygen, which adds across double bonds in a 2+ 2 cycloaddition to produce the corresponding oxetanes (unstable) that subsequently cleave thermally to produce the carboxylic acids.

Now there's not much UV around at the earth's surface, and hence not much singlet oxygen or ozone (another product of the photolysis of oxygen), but then it doesn't take much to cause this type of degradation. We've all seen rubber and such degrade over time; the process is much the same.

Many years ago I had a friend in Calistoga, CA who used to harvest and cure his own olives. Most of the time he managed his family vineyards, but did this as a hobby. I still know him to talk to, but don't live anywhere near him and so have no idea if he still does the olive thing.

I read a story, wish I had saved it but didn't, about an EMP test on some new cars. Maybe it was a solar event, can't remember. Anyway, most of the cars survived with little or no damage.

The figured all the metal around the electrical parts served as a pseudo Farraday cage and protected the bits.

I don't think refrigeration would make much difference, as I suspect the activation energy of the singlet oxygen/carbon-carbon double bond 2+2 cycloaddition reaction is pretty low. But, frankly, I don't remember, so I could be wrong.

It's on all the time here on cable. I've seen it so many times I just don't bother anymore like with a number of my fave films. If I watch, I'm just gonna end up checking the sets, lighting, camera shots editing and whatnot and not actually follow the story or pay attention to what's being said. I would love to be able to "unsee" certain movies.

840 In the end, long before a potential Grexit, Germany will give in. This crisis shows that the EU is basicly run by Germany, but the countries leadershp cast is obsessed with uniting every european country except Russia under the roof of the Union. Its the softest form of German imperialism ever.

The German politicians in charge are in a "grand coalition", so both main antagonists of the political system would bear responsibility for such a surrender. That means that there is no serious opposition to capitalize on what the German tax payers will probably consider a great betrayel. The anti-euro movement in Germany is pathetically weak.

843 the Germans were ruthless during WWII. The war is long over, they have signed their treaties, they continue to pay reparations, they have kept their end of the bargain. Perhaps I missed something in history class, but I do not recall that part of the treaty that ended WWII required Germany to work their asses off to fully support the over spending and laziness of other countries because they were ruthless in WWII. Germany doesn't owe Greece anything. Greece is responsible for its own situation. According to Greeks I know here in the US, the Greeks want to sit around in the cafes and drink coffee all day. They don't want to work, and they are lazy. Germany should not feel guilty for not wanting to support this lack of responsibility.

Posted by: Mistress NOpe at February 09, 2015 11:01 PM (2/oBD)

844 Germany should *print* more money to "loan" to Greece. Write "Occupation Currency" on it and add Hitler's face. See if the Greeks would take that. Also, why do they call it "exit" if Greece is about to get run out at gun point?
