Midnight Brian Williams Update

The hour is growing late.

Remember, Jake Tapper and Brian Stetler interviewed a pilot named Krell who gave Williams a more helpful narrative. Krell said the chopper did take "small arms fire" (from AK-47's), but most bullets hit the bridges they were towing beneath. He said they did not get hit by any rockets, obviously.

I kind of doubted this guy's tale simply because we already had two guys on the record -- one of them the flight engineer from the chopper -- who had been telling the same story for years, that the chopper took no fire at all.

I will not share with you the full range of my suspicions.

Well, now someone saying he was the pilot of Wiliams' bird says they took no fire at all.

You gotta click on the link, because it is a first-person account by Chris Simeone, the pilot of the "bird" in question.

It's damning.

Pilot of Brian Williams flight: All that hit us was dust

By Chris Simeone

February 5, 2015 | 11:22pm

Pilot of Brian Williams flight: All that hit us was dust

I was the pilot in command of the flight that carried Brian Williams into Iraq in March 2003.

...

After landing, we learned that the parked aircraft had received small-arms fire and had been hit with an RPG on their mission.

...

Brian Williams began to tell the story, from 2003, that the lead aircraft in our flight had received this ground fire.

This was not true.

Brian Williams then began to give account that the aircraft he was traveling on received this ground fire.

This is not true.

Brian Williams reported on the David Letterman show that the "captain" of his aircraft had received a Purple Heart for a wound to the ear. I was the pilot in command of the aircraft carrying Brian Williams. I do not have a Purple Heart, and my ears are just fine.

Chris Simeone, 39, is a retired US Army warrant officer 4. He started his 21-year career in the military prior to the War on Terror but went on to serve during the start of the US invasion of Iraq. He now teaches flight courses for the Army.

What this guy describes is, I think, two flights of two choppers each. The two choppers out in front got hit. The two choppers flying in later did not get hit.

You know, when this began, I was saying that Williams would ride this out, that the media would back him to the hilt, that they would just pretend this never happened.

No.

I was wrong.

It's over.

It gets worse.

Tom Brokaw Wants Williams Fired

...

NBC's most revered journalist is furious that Brian Williams is still in the anchor chair after he sheepishly admitted he hadn’t traveled on a helicopter hit by enemy fire.

"Brokaw wants Williams' head on a platter," an NBC source said. "He is making a lot of noise at NBC that a lesser journalist or producer would have been immediately fired or suspended for a false report."

...

Brokaw, 74, was still the "Nightly News" anchor when Williams came back from his Iraq expedition -- and an insider said he knew the story Williams later spouted was bunk.

"Tom Brokaw and [former NBC News President] Steve Capus knew this was a false story for a long time and have been extremely uncomfortable with it," the source said.

NBC News execs had counseled him to stop telling the tale.

Read it all, it gets worse, but I do not want to keep excerpting so much from the Post. Read it. The ending is a killer.

And it gets even worse.

NBC News anchor Brian Williams' comments about dead bodies, Hurricane Katrina starting to gain attention, draw scrutiny

Williams said he saw floating body in Quarter

JOHN SIMERMAN| JSIMERMAN@THEADVOCATE.COM

Feb. 05, 2015

This is a New Orleans rag, by the way. So they have some local knowledge, which is crucial.

Williams' account of seeing a body float by in the French Quarter -- which remained largely dry -- and even a claim of catching dysentery from drinking Katrina floodwaters have raised eyebrows among bloggers and elsewhere since he took it on the chin this week over a claim that he rode in a helicopter that was downed by a rocket-propelled grenade in Iraq.

...

"When you look out of your hotel window in the French Quarter and watch a man float by face down, when you see bodies that you last saw in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, and swore to yourself that you would never see in your country," Williams said in a 2006 interview.

...

But the French Quarter, the original high ground of New Orleans, was not impacted by the floodwaters that overwhelmed the vast majority of the city.

A spokesman for NBC did not immediately respond Thursday to questions about those comments, the hotel to which Williams referred, whether Williams stands by the claims or whether the network is reviewing them.

The article also questions his claims of getting dysentery from New Orleans' water and being molested by gang-bangers in his five-star hotel.

Read it all.

It's over.

The countdown begins.

Brian Williams will separate from NBC by Monday/Tuesday.

End of Days: Et tu, HuffPo?

And the New York Times:

or years, Brian Williams had been telling a story that wasn’t true. On Wednesday night, he took to his anchor chair on “NBC Nightly News” to apologize for misleading the public.

On Thursday, his real problems started....

Rem Rieder, a USA Today media columnist, wrote, "It's hard to see how Williams gets past this, and how he survives as the face of NBC News."

And Even...

In fairness, just because you connect with someone via Twitter, that's not a reason to automatically doubt the person's tale.

Still... you know, I specifically kept asking Stetler and Tapper "Where did you get this guy from? Did you find him, did he find you, or did a third party shop him to you?"

They didn't answer.

Update: A Richard Krell, who was in fact a pilot, apparently was definitely in Iraq with Brian Williams in 2003. I'm told searching on this book for "Krell" will confirm that.

Still, Krell is the only guy who says Brian Williams' helicopter took fire. Even Brian Williams seems to agree his chopper did not take fire.

More: From John E, who speaks of birds.

I think that it could hasten the shift in ad money from the legacy media if there is any effect at all. He may stay at the anchor slot, but it's likely that viewers will just move on more quickly to other sources for news.

Other than that potential, today has been slightly more fun because of the collective underwear of the left becoming completely soiled with self-aggrandizing shartitude.

Long knives at NBC/Comcast are out, and anyone that wants that job or thinks they can do it will be dishing out the dirt on him.

NBC will want a new face in place for the election year next year, and hope that the new anchor will be able to get one of the spots as a moderator for the Presidential debates.

110 Backstabbing is par for the course.

About 15 people in the NBC/MSNBC ecosystem are jonesin' for Williams seat like Frank Sinatra in Man With the Golden Arm.

They want to be anchor, They want it so bad they could die.

And the people under them want their jobs, too.

So all of his underlings are a-wishin' and a-hopin' that Williams gets shitcanned.

He will get no support. They ALL would love to see him go.

Network anchor positions open up maybe once per decade. This is that moment -- the opportunity they all wait for.

Out come the shivs.

Meh. The network news broadcasts demographics skew pretty heavy towards octogenarians, so Williams and company were competing for a share of an already declining market.

I was laughing like a maniac at all the #BrianWilliamsMisremembers comments. The humiliation dished out last night to this LIAR was well deserved. When we stand up and together against the left it works. I recommend a Twitter account for everyone it fast, it's immediate breaking news hits here first, and you can help spread a meme or a takedown of a lying journalist, and people notice. If you don't think NBC was monitoring the tweets to see which way the wind was blowing then you are underestimating the impact that Twitter has. 195 our aim is to destroy the entire corrupt machinery of the real Progressive Political Party in America, the "News" Media.

Posted by: ace

And just as in the field of politics, "incrementalism" is the way to go.

Destroying Williams' credibility won't, on its own, cause the MSM to collapse.

Pointing out every partisan lie in the NY Times won't, on its own, cause the MSM to collapse.

And so on and so on for Dan Rather, Rolling Stone, etc. etc. dating back for years.

But each time that happens, the media as a concept losing another percentage point of credibility.

It's actually already quite low. We've been more successful than we realize.

But we need to keep punching, keep knocking off those percentage points, until the MSM reaches a bare minimum of relevance.

It will never get to zero. There are always stroke victims in senior homes and mouth-breating cretins who will believe anything on the idiot box. But if we get the MSM's credibility down below a certain threshhold, it will have become essentially irrelevant.

Knocking Brian Williams off his perch is just yet one more blow.

Aim for the kidneys. Over and over and over.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at February 06, 2015 01:04 AM (/GgDU)

232 Don't know how any reader of this site could think this is not a big deal. The absolute #1 theme for Ace seems to me to be media hypocrisy and pomposity. It's got to be at least a quarter of the content. These WWE refs live to put their thumbs on the scales, and try to do it while keeping an aura of respectability. That is their job. When times are really tough, then Candy Crowley puts her whole 350 pound body on the scale for the team, and then offers a quiet apology a few days later when nobody is watching for her own self respect.

Ace writes about this all the time. Probably partly because it's fun to poke at people that take themselves so seriously. Probably mostly because these people still move the soft minded LIV's impressions of politics more than they should.

You'd expect him to lay off when the lead guy on NBC, the #1 bad actor, the North Korea of the U.S. television media, is shown to be such a phony? Why would you think that? Why should he lay off? This is direct support of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of words written on this site over the course of years.

But if it ever happens, there's no guarantee a more balanced media takes its place, so....

If successful, what would take the MSM's place?

On another note, the AP and UPI services are no less biased in what makes their feed. The world media is, it seems, biased toward pro-statist positions, mostly leftist.

If we agree that an informed citizenry is crucial for a democratically elected republic, then there needs to be something else, a credible something else, to take its place.

That takes time, a looooonnnnggg time. By the time you finally get to court, and trust me, they will slow boat it to court, it will be 7-8 years, and by that time your sales have turned to shit, your stock price has plummeted, and the stockholders have been calling for your head.

It sucks, but that is the way it works, now how it should work.

Plus, NBC/Comcast's insurance company will quietly settle out of court.

I'm betting it's far more petty than covering his own ass. Williams took over for Brokaw. And I'm sure it wasn't a secret that Williams wanted a job and did a lot of "NBC should have a younger face as the lead anchor of its news" and helped push Brokaw out the door.

Exactly. The next guy in line might be as bad or worse, but maybe a percent or 2 fewer watch NBC for news, and maybe a percent or 2 stumble into a more complete and accurate worldview. It's an small, incremental victory politically.

It's also satisfying on a base level, and we don't need to pretend it is not. There is a reason they make movies like Anchorman. It's because nobody takes themselves more seriously than the news media.

Huge difference between a talk radio host that has a more narrow advertiser appeal than NBC News. Beck at Fox News Channel is also different than Brian Williams at NBC network news. The NBC network can easily replace an advertiser while the Fox News Channel can only have so many gold, reverse mortgages and Omaha Steaks advertising.

280 So if Brian saw a body somewhere else it was probably not floating by. And now another place he says he saw a body within sight of the Superdome (that IS believable) ... but that doesn't easily get conflated with floating by his hotel window.

A big news guy doesn't have a camera around for these events?

The question isn't how the mind gets confused over time, it is how the ego learns to lie over time, especially to fulfill the big expectation shoes of a news anchor, and maybe mommy issues, or daughter issues.

Bullshit.

People weren't buying Audis for years because of the "sudden acceleration". To this day there are people that think that a Prius will just go on its own.

Once the news puts it out there, then others in the media will report it, of course sourcing the original news source to cover their asses. The one that put it out could be liable, but it will be a decade before they see any "justice".

Think the buying public wants to see the CEO say "fuck you!!!" to the news crews or wants them to say "we are studying this problem and will get to the bottom of it as soon as possible". If they say fuck you, customers may decide to go elsewhere, and the Board of Directors may decide a change in management is due.

They also have huge sales which makes them less vulnerable to boycotts unless you can get 10-15% of the people to go along. That won't happen.

I've been at a company that was targeted for a boycott, our sales went up.

I had people say they would boycott us because we advertised on some show, our sales went up.

Advertisers will go where the viewers are, and Glenn Beck's ratings were about 15% of what NBC Nightly News' ratings were.

Eyes all bloodshot.
Fur all matted.

Just imagine a hung over Ewok in full battle gear.
And in his left hand?

A scalp.

Wait, he's scalping hobo's now? That's a bad ass there.

351 18 degrees in CLT. That just sucks.

Posted by: Nip Sip at February 06, 2015 06:16 AM (0FSuD)

352 Hi Nip Slip

Yeh, ten degrees in the Peoples Republic of Baltimore as well.

Just a little bit chilly right now.

No...
Actually, that's pretty fcukin' cold for around here.

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at February 06, 2015 06:19 AM (62ffX)

353 Shit that's colder than Vail, it's 18 there.

Use to live in Towson. Many many years ago.

Posted by: Nip Sip at February 06, 2015 06:25 AM (0FSuD)

354 A balmy 10 degrees here in Louisville as well ... supposed to get to 40.

Better damn hurry.

355 "Use to live in Towson. Many many years ago."

*Looks out front door*

Yup, Towson.

We're living in it.

356 And with that?

NOOD!!!

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at February 06, 2015 06:28 AM (62ffX)

357 Ah, yesterday was such a treat. Brian was caught beating his money like it owed him a dick, and the legendary Iowahawk dropped by in the comments to say Hi or FU Obama; same difference.

Perhaps today we will find out that TFG was caught with a dead girl or a live boy in his room. In either case, Harry Reid would approve.

358 I once saw a body floating in the French quarter. On the bright side it was a puddle of piss and the guy got up and staggered away. I'm afraid that only some of the piss was his own. The humanity. And as for body parts, I've seen lots of boobehs floating down Bourbon Street late at night. Real swingers. I'm going back Monday.

359 "107
I suspect that the Clinton gang has someone in mind for this job. Any candidates?"

Isn't Chelsea qualified? She has shown herself to be an excellent journalist, not mention savvy wall street trader, mother and (the big one) compassionate. Plus she just doesn't care about money so I'd say she is the perfect fit.

360 So is "Chinooked" an epithet on MSNBC yet?

361 Alas, the only purple heart that should be given is for the trust in Brian Williams. And it appears it is a critical injury that will never heal to full, past strength.

362 "You know, when this began, I was saying that Williams would ride this out, that the media would back him to the hilt, that they would just pretend this never happened.

No."

You still think there is a shred of accountability left in the political/media class...there isn't. He's staying put.

363 So this dipshit took the 'soldier who saved his life' to a Rangers game this January? Who is this soldier and what is his story?

Curiouser and curiouser.

364 The executive suite has good reason to let Williams twist slowly in the wind. The president of NBC News, Deborah Turness, was brought in to turn the organization around, amidst numerous hits to its credibility and sliding ratings. But she is much less powerful than the entrenched Williams. She must cut him down to size in order to exercise any control. This scandal actually helps her.
