Brian Williams, 2013: I Have to Tell You, Alec Baldwin, That When My Bird Went Tango Uniform One Niner Fiver Kliks Outside of Najaf, I Pondered My Own Mortality With Manful Quietude
This showboatin' sociopathic fabulist has been telling increasingly more Total Horeshit accounts of this Non-Brush with Not-Death since 2003, getting more Heroic and Steely-Eyed every time he tells the tale.
April 2008: In another blog post, Williams again recalls the 2003 attack and says "we came under fire" -- explicitly linking his aircraft to the attack. He continues, "The Chinook helicopter flying in front of ours (from the 101st Airborne) took an RPG to the rear rotor, as all four of our low-flying Chinooks took fire. We were forced down and stayed down." April 2008: With Williams slated to speak at the school's spring commencement ceremony, Ohio State University puts out a press release to trumpet the anchor's background. While the biography never explicitly says that Williams was in the helicopter that was struck by enemy fire, it sure implies as much. "He was the first NBC correspondent to reach Baghdad during the 2003 war in Iraq, and was part of a U.S. Army helicopter mission that was forced down by enemy fire south of Najaf," the school says. March 2013: On the ten-year anniversary of the incident, Williams appears on "The Late Show with David Letterman." He says "two of our four helicopters were hit by ground-fire, including the one I was in, RPG and AK-47." He adds, "We figure out how to land safely and we did." The comment suggests that his helicopter were hit, and was part of the same formation. January 2015: In a "Nightly News" segment, Williams says "the helicopter we were traveling in was forced down after being hit by an RPG."But not on that list is a particularly Throbbing version of his Terror at Two Hundred Feet war story he told to Alec Baldwin, trying to impress him. He actually claimed he "briefly" -- and manfully, we assume -- contemplated his own mortality as his chopper was racked by SAMs and groundfire from the AK's. (#StolenValor fabulists like to mimic the lingo of actual soldiers to sound more badass. I'm sure if you asked this Walter Mitty motherfucker about the event he'd tell you how many "kliks" he was outside of Najaf.) But, see, what really happened was, when he found out a different helicopter flying a full hour ahead of his had been shot, Brian Williams was so traumatized that his life flashed before his eyes.
"I guess I do say to myself and to others -- I've got this' -- and I don’t know where that unbridled confidence comes from," Williams told Baldwin, trying to describe where he gets his thirst for action and challenge. "And I've done some ridiculously stupid things under that banner, like being in a helicopter I had no business being in in Iraq with rounds coming into the airframe," Williams said. "Did you think you would die?" Baldwin asked. "Briefly, sure," Williams said. "There have been probably more than..." he said, before trailing off.I wonder what further Appointments With Death he was about to recount for us before wistfully trailing off, like a Hero who doesn't want to talk about The Shit He's Seen. Gee I don't know where my ridiculous confidence -- my "I got this" response -- comes from when I'm in dangerous situations. I think it's mostly because I'm daydreaming these Perils and really am not in any sort of danger whatsoever.
"The wagons, they are a-circlin'," AllahPundit writes, further noting that the New York Times has chosen to cover this on... page B. 10. Sean Davis notes that the same guy who defended Neil Tyson's lies and evasions is now performing the same services for Brian Williams. Eric Wemple notes (as many people have) that Princess Williams was certainly traveling with an NBC entourage, and those people knew the truth of this event, and yet NBC has published fabulist fictions about it not once but multiple times, with the official corporate position apparently being, "If it helps our soft, feminine-looking News Presenter appear more manly, let's go with it, for Corporate Branding Reasons." Incidentally, various Defenders of the Liberal Social Caste have claimed that it was inconceivable to them that Brian Williams would lie; ergo, it must just be a mistake. They claimed they could not fathom any possible motive for lying. Even though these shitbags work in a bullhshitty, connections-y, Who You Know industry, they claim to not understand the usefulness of a lie told for professional advancement and personal aggrandizement. As ace points out: NBC surely knew this was a lie (fable, misrembered, whatever- those are soft words- this was a lie, brazen and repeated), and they let him run with it on multiple occasions because it suited their purposes.
Particularly, it helped them hide behind the lie "We support the troops but not the mission" (remember that one?).
This MUST become about NBC's repeated mendacity as much as it is about Brian Williams.

on aircraft 99, which was the one shot down. Brian Williams was lying
the minute he visited the aircraft hours later, and the crew members
have been trying to call attention to it since then. Even back in 2003,
he stated that he was in the convoy, which he wasnt. And his convoy that
landed after the boys were shot down left them to do their own security
while trying to assess whether their aircraft could be flown and take
care of repairs.
Not only this, but he didn't mention in his report if the members of
the crew were safe and what was going on. So imagine what it was like
for all of the military wives in Germany waiting for a call to say their
husbands were okay. It was a few days later once the crew WAS safe
before they gave interviews. And it was to Geraldo Rivera since they
were irritated by Brian Williams.
Basically, they refused to give Williams an interview on site and
closed the aircraft ramp on him because they were still reeling from
their experience and needing to take care of their aircraft so they
could get to a relatively safe area. And Williams wanted the story so he
embellished his story with no regard to the crew or their families. Our
home has banned NBC news since 2003 because of this jackass, and the
fact that my husband spits fire and rants every time he saw Brian
Williams."

Memory actually is pretty complicated. Every time we remember something we're making new memories that slush together with the old ones. Practiced liars know this and will actually train their memories by reviewing it over and over in their heads until they remember it the way they choose. Then as Costanza famously put it, "It's not a lie if you believe it." Or in other words, it's undetectable in the person's demeanor because they really do believe it.
For a non-liar though, who isn't doing this process, you're not going to misremember not me as me.

We actually can misremember things that happened to other people. However, that typically happens only after we've told a lie that inserts us into the other person's story. Tell the lie enough, and our own memory will start to rewrite itself until we actually "remember" being there when the events happened.
I wouldn't be surprised if that's what happened in this case.
But the key bit there is "Tell the lie enough..." In order to reach that point, Brian Williams would need to have lied quite a lot about being in the helicopter that was hit. So if he has managed to overwrite his own memory and insert himself into the story, it doesn't excuse things.

As far as the role others at NBC played in keeping this lie going, keep in mind that when he told his tale on the news, it was accompanied by video of the chopper that was actually hit.
Someone had to edit the lie and the video together, and of course Williams had to approve the final edit.

Suddenly some asshole on the Rez side starts popping rounds at us! We ran to the other side of a small berm. I could hear the rounds ripping through the branches and leaves of the trees around us. The leader yelled at him to stop shooting, that there were people and kids downrange. Then when he was reloading we ran.
Fin. We reported it, but never heard anything more about it.

When I was a campaign staffer, I always tried to do the same to the opposition. It was amazing what you could find.

Yeah that's what people are missing here. He's insignificant. A lot of people are saying "Brian who?" when they hear about this story. The only people who watch NBC news regularly are hard right bloggers looking for something to complain about and people over the age of 70. They lose viewers every year by attrition, its a dying industry.

You know how everyone remembers exactly where they were, what they were doing, who they were with, what they were wearing etc when something really memorable happens?
Eg: Challenger explosion, 9/11, Kennedy assassination, etc.
Someone actually did a study on this one with a bunch of people just after the Challenger explosion.
They had the participants write down in excruciating detail all the things I mentioned, right after the event. Then a decade later they asked the participants to write all those things down again.
People got lots of details wrong. Things they insisted they remembered perfectly. They were so wedded to the idea of perfect recall that some of the participants even accused the researchers of faking the original documents.
In no way am I insisting this is what Williams did. He started lying immediately after the event. He may even believe the lies now, I don't know.

What I read was that he didn't get to the landing site of the one that got hit by an RPG until an hour later.
That doesn't necessarily rule out the possibility that he was in the same convoy and had to land elsewhere and ... somehow it took an hour to get to the one that got hit.
That seems unlikely, but still a possibility.
I just haven't read anything yet that says he was 100% definitely not in the same convoy.
He most likely was not, but I'm still a bit confused where exactly Williams was when the other helicopter got hit by an RPG.
