Rich Hall: Hell No I Ain't Happy (2009)
So I enjoyed Hall's The Dirty South so much I started exploring other things he's done and found this special from 2009. The first half is pretty good - Hall is a master of improv and riffing off audience responses - but it's the second half where Hall introduces his country-singer alter-ego Otis Lee Crenshaw (and the Honkytonk Assholes) that it becomes teh awesome.
Hall can literally create and play songs - good ones - as fast as people can call out topics. Highlights include the 'F*ck Disney' song, the single malt song, as well as the restraining order song. If Crenshaw and the HAs ever put out an album, I'll buy it.

In January 2015, a Greenpeace activist called for the beheading of a member of the House of Lords on the website of the Guardian. When challenged, he repeated the call, and again. People who questioned the wisdom of these remarks were attacked or banned. The Guardian actively moderates its comments, but even though Gary Evans' calls to behead Matt Ridley caused a bit of a stir, it took the editors 32 hours to realize that death threats against political opponents is not really how we like to do things in Britain nowadays. As if on cue, Natalie Bennett, Green Party leader, called for the decriminalisation of belonging to a violent terror group. The Guardian simultaneously carried stories about the beheading of a Japanese hostage by Islamic State.
The U-2 Just Keeps Flying, and Flying, and Flying...
Because the 60 year old Dragon Lady is still effective and cheap to operate.
First built in 1955, the U-2 is, next to the B-52 bomber, the longest-lived airplane in the U.S. Air Force's inventory. Today's U-2s are dramatically modified from their original version, being larger and with far more sophisticated reconnaissance capabilities. Crucially, they offer greater flexibility than satellites. Plus, on balance, they still remain cheaper to operate than drones.
These capabilities are what keep the Dragon Lady in the air. As I wrote in the Wall Street Journal last year, the military is actually relying more on the U-2 today than in the past. While the Air Force flip-flopped on keeping or retiring the U-2 fleet, top commanders have testified to its usefulness in an increasingly unstable world. The head of U.S. troops on the Korean peninsula asserted that the U-2 right now is the best reconnaissance platform for use along the Demilitarized Zone, something even more important given the unpredictability of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.
Alcohol redefined as 'weapon' in sexual assault cases by prosecutors, military officials
The alcohol - rum, vodka, wine and hard cider - listed in the latest allegation of sexual assault between Air Force Academy cadets is being viewed in a new way by the military and civilian prosecutors.Alcohol for years has been seen as a contributing factor in rapes, and it is thought to play a role in nearly half of the almost 6,000 sexual assaults reported across the Defense Department last year. But the role alcohol plays has been succinctly redefined.
"It's a weapon," said Katharina Booth, chief trial deputy and chief of the Boulder District Attorney's Office sexual assault unit.
Booth said the change comes from the realization that perpetrators are more likely to use alcohol to subdue their sexual assault victims than guns, threats and fists.
...In a December Pentagon report, the military calls alcohol a weapon in its latest sexual assault prevention guidance for commanders, echoing a statement made by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel in May.
Hagel ordered a review of alcohol policies in a bid to quell sexual assaults.
Voluntarily-consumed alcohol is not a weapon. Just name me any other 'weapon' where its victim deliberately chooses to render themselves senseless with it. And often paying good money for the privilege.

So Why Did Phil Love Rita So Much?
In discussions of the film "Groundhog Day" on this blog, I've noticed a couple of people questioning why the Bill Murray character would find Andie McDowell's Rita deserving of all those years of his devotion and energy. For example, ".[W]hat, exactly, made the lovely but, let's face it, vapid Rita worthy of Phil's centuries of effort?"My answer is that he discovered love. Yes, Rita was beautiful, and a good human being with many excellent qualities. But of course she was imperfect, and over the years (centuries? millennia?) Phil no doubt had learned just about all of her flaws. Still, it didn't matter to him because it wasn't about Rita, exactly-it was about the fact that, somewhere along the long path of his transformation to wisdom, he finally understood that every person in town, including the ones he couldn't tolerate at the beginning, was worthy of his attention-and of something one might call "love," in its broadest sense.
And somewhere along the way to that knowledge, Phil's efforts in "Groundhog Day" stopped being about getting into Rita's pants or even getting her to love him, although that certainly took up a larger percentage of his time (and the movie's length) than some of his other pursuits. But he probably spent at least as much time learning to play the piano (a form of love, too), or to carve ice sculptures, or to become skilled at some of the more mindless and meaningless tricks he mastered, or learning details about the life of almost everyone in town.

And then he vanished.
A couple years ago I checked him out online and he's apparently very successful in England. Lives and works there most of the year I think it said.

Fine. I can understand the reasoning.

Yeah, I think that is a function of cost of operation. Also the Blackbird was really aging out. U-2 was not that much of a state of the arts plane, just a long range one.
Satellites pretty much do the SR-71 job now.

I watched the video "The Dirty South" that was linked here a while back. Good enough, I guess, and he did debunk some myths even while perpetuating some others.
Then I watched his video on Texas. Not good. It starts out okay, but there was an underlying hostile tone which just got stronger and stronger. And the last 15-20 minutes was just him bitching about GW Bush and Rick Perry.

Milady and I watched Groundhog Day, part yesterday, the rest tonight. Noticed more than in previous viewings many little hints of just how very long Phil was stuck. Ages and ages.
Just checked the email, and there's a note from my sister-in-law saying their family are visiting Istanbul and got ripped off in front of their hotel, nothing left but their passports.

I'm updating the driver for the optical drive, but I seriously doubt it'll help since it was the windows dvd running in the optical drive that told me it needed couldn't find the drivers as part of the install.
I tried to change my Sata/raid setting since some places say this can cause that error, but my vaio has some sort of locked bios and the advanced tab on AMI bios doesn't have any of the useful features listed.

Be careful. There's a scam where you get an email purporting to be from someone you know, saying they're in trouble and asking you to send money. Make sure the email is legit before responding, especially if you didn't previously know they were going to be out of the country.

My parents owned a small farm, and later 16 acres when we were growing up. People who don't own property like that have no idea the damage and problems you have when you don't control who uses your land.
Such as, snowmobilers knocking down fences, snowmobilers running over blueberry bushes, hunters firing guns in orchards while pickers are picking apples, cross country skiers hanging out in horse barn smoking next to hay and straw, trash all over the place, people with fireworks setting fire in orchards, people chasing horses.
It would be nice to be able to allow people to have access to your property, but there are too many stupid people in the world.

One major issue with the SR was its need to meet a specifically dedicated tanker which would handle its unique high temperature fuel and nothing else.
And given the SR mission profile, it required an unusually large tanker force relative to the number of active airframes. It was *not* one tanker join per flight. Usually two or three.
On a typical serious SR mission, they had those specialized tankers dispatching out of multiple widely spaced bases. Plus backup specialized tankers. The specialized tankers themselves sometimes having to meet conventional tankers in order to stay on station for the arriving SR.
Tons of complicated advanced logistics.
The U-2 is a lot simpler to support.
By the way, if you ever have the opportunity to see a U-2 depart, take it. It's just jaw-dropping. Damn near a vertical climb from something that's obviously not a fighter jet.

According to a quick skimming of wikipedia the European Central Bank authorizes the national bank in each country to print and issue a certain number of Euro notes. Greek ones have a 'Y' on them and people have been speculating for a while that in the event of a Grexit the Y notes would become new Drachmas. Which is one reason people used to avoid them.

Ya, I get the part about the Drachma, but I'm suddenly at a loss to understand where the euro comes from. I vaguely remember each country printed their own, and they were coded, at least in the beginning. If Greece tries to print euros that's going to screw up the currency exchange rates for euros completely with euros coded for Greece trading at a different exchange rate than German euros.
Germany 'loans' billions to Greece. Greece spends the money, and can't pay it back, or refuses to pay it back. Germany continues to carry the debt on the books as money owed.
Sure Greece credit rating collapses, and nobody will loan any more money to the government, but what stops the government of Greece from continue to spend (create) money?

Well if Greece gets kicked out, very quickly no one in Europe (or the world) will accept their Y-euros on a 1-to-1 basis and the exchange rate will quickly fall.
The problem for them is that all of their debt is denominated in real Euros.

He got out last year as a Corporal. He's "inactive duty reservist" right now. He'd had enough under Commander Prissypants. He drove convoys in Afghanistan and was part of a hell of a lot of combat. Anyhow, he still loves the Corps. He's in college full time, but said if a Republican president came into power, he'd re-enlist just to fight ISIS.
The ROE they dealt with in A-stan got a lot of our young men killed.

An old SR crew chief told me, after the Blackbird sunsetted, that they often quoted to lay audiences about how each engine of the SR had the horsepower of a heavy diesel locomotive.
I allowed as how I had heard that, and he went on to say that they actually got about the same average fuel economy per mile as did a pair of big locomotives pulling a freight train.
Except the SR had a much smaller fuel tank and the miles clicked by a whole lot faster. Hence the need for the whole massive complicated backstage tanker show.

I used to have family in Albuquerque and spent a good amount of time in NM back in the early 90s. I still own 5ac of land near the El Morro national monument but haven't visited it for years. I picked it up at a land auction in 1992 for just $600. The owner's association has been slowly paving roads and adding services so there may be some homes there now. It's mixed in with a Navajo reservation so if things ever go completely belly-up, I may go Navajo. :-)

The more common, logical, proper meaning of "out of pocket", hyphenated or not, means your costs will not be compensated. If your business expenses are "out of pocket", it may be due to a lack of planning, bad luck, or anything else... you are paying expenses from your wallet, your poke, your pocket.
If you are a Mormon, it seems to mean you are away from home.

Finally managed to download a BC / AtC podcast.
To me, AtC sounds like Mila Kunis in That '70s Show. I don't know why, but I always pictured her with a Southern drawl.

Neither do I watch Today, especially since TFG is hanging around. Frankly, I hadn't pictured him as getting out of bed until around 8:30 or so its a little surprising he is up in time for a show like that.
