Another Progressive Self-Excommunicates Over Political Correctness Thugsquads
Pretty much the same deal as Saudi "morality police" clubbing women down in the street, except more gayballz.
So, to state the obvious: Jon Chait is a jerk who somehow manages to be both condescending and wounded in his piece on political correctness. He gets the basic nature of language policing wrong, and his solutions are wrong, and he's a centrist Democrat scold who is just as eager to shut people out of the debate as the people he criticizes. That’s true. Here are some things that are also true. I have seen, with my own two eyes, a 19 year old white woman -- smart, well-meaning, passionate -- literally run crying from a classroom because she was so ruthlessly brow-beaten for using the word "disabled." Not repeatedly. Not with malice. Not because of privilege. She used the word once and was excoriated for it. She never came back. I watched that happen. I have seen, with my own two eyes, a 20 year old black man, a track athlete who tried to fit organizing meetings around classes and his ridiculous practice schedule (for which he received a scholarship worth a quarter of tuition), be told not to return to those meetings because he said he thought there were such a thing as innate gender differences. He wasn’t a homophobe, or transphobic, or a misogynist. It turns out that 20 year olds from rural South Carolina aren’t born with an innate understanding of the intersectionality playbook. But those were the terms deployed against him, those and worse. So that was it; he was gone. I have seen, with my own two eyes, a 33 year old Hispanic man, an Iraq war veteran who had served three tours and had become an outspoken critic of our presence there, be lectured about patriarchy by an affluent 22 year old white liberal arts college student, because he had said that other vets have to "man up" and speak out about the war. Because apparently we have to pretend that we don’t know how metaphorical language works or else we’re bad people. I watched his eyes glaze over as this woman with $300 shoes berated him. I saw that. Myself. These things aren’t hypothetical. This isn't some thought experiment. This is where I live, where I have lived. These and many, many more depressing stories of good people pushed out and marginalized in left-wing circles because they didn't use the proper set of social and class signals to satisfy the world of intersectional politics. So you'll forgive me when I roll my eyes at the army of media liberals, stuffed into their narrow enclaves, responding to Chait by insisting that there is no problem here and that anyone who says there is should be considered the enemy. By the way: in these incidents, and dozens and dozens of more like it, which I have witnessed as a 30-hour-a-week antiwar activist for three years and as a blogger for the last seven and as a grad student for the past six, the culprits overwhelmingly were not women of color. That’s always how this conversation goes down: if you say, hey, we appear to have a real problem with how we talk to other people, we are losing potential allies left and right, then the response is always "stop lecturing women of color." But these codes aren't enforced by women of color, in the overwhelming majority of the time. They’re enforced by the children of privilege. I know. I live here. I am on campus. I have been in the activist meetings and the lefty coffee houses. My perspective goes beyond the same 200 people who write the entire Cool Kid Progressive Media.Thanks to @GadsdenJazz. It's inevitable. The atmosphere is corrosive. Do you find yourself modifying your beliefs to conform to your locale?
Have you defended practices which on later thought you realize you would never have done so in the past?
Do you find yourself disdainful or critical of your conservative friends from other (less liberal) areas?
You will be absorbed, you actions will change and you will become something you didn't want to be.
This is very much aimed at Ace. I've noticed here and there a tone that strikes me as being more liberal than it seemed to be in the almost recent past.
This may be due to a romantic interest. (always a corrosive effect on one's political and social beliefs if the SO is more liberal than you).
At least try to find different venues and friends to spend your time in/with.
You'll find that moving, although expensive and disruptive, can be a game changer in terms of ones future prospects and attitude.

I took a sociology class my freshman year at college. We had small group discussions (30 people) once a week. I swear to God, every time we brought up a social, political, or philosophical position, I was on the side of conservatism and logic. The other 29 people- with one or two occasional exceptions- were arguing against me or staying silent. Trying to discuss the differences between men and women, or the definition of terrorism was insane. Sometimes, literally. These people were irrational. And I loved fighting with them; it was a great way to figure out my own political opinions, because I had to defend them like my life depended on it. But for someone less secure in their beliefs, that kind of treatment is awful.

1) make sure you can argue their own position better than they can; it makes you a better debater and strengthens your own position by understanding it more fully.
2) you will never be able to reason logically with them (see Hector, Gerg, Kos, DU) as they are drones. To win, take their position and run with it to the farthest extreme possible. It forces them to backtrack and then almost unwittingly begin arguing from a more conservative point of view. Almost immediately, they stop talking and then the veins in their neck bulge because they have no response.
I'll let you know when I get somewhat remotely good at this.

You're right, the only trouble is that people with less confidence get used to backing down, so even when they've accomplished things and have that confidence, they're in the habit of not saying anything, because they've been taught that it's easier to shut up and go with the flow.
Believe it or not, I started out very shy and was a bit of an outcast in school. But I've never been good at reading social cues, so when people tried to ostracize me, I refused to be silent, and kept trying to make my voice heard. Thank God, or I'd be another silent little LIV who keeps their head down for fear of making waves.

I no longer think they are simply wrong. This implies that I think they can be corrected. They cannot, because they believe and feel that they are right with all the fervor of a newly converted religious zealot. They cannot be reasoned with because they didn't get to their current worldview by reason and observation. And they have no intention of keeping their hideous, twisted worldview to themselves.
They are the enemy to me, and I will no longer waste my time believing that they are open to reason and argument. They certainly view me as one; I'm just going to return the favor.

Yes.... and this was after I had raised her as a full time single parent until she went to College.
Some of this I am still very loathe to talk about...
But within 3 years, she went from being a fairly well adjusted young Woman living in my home...
To living with the X wife, College student, bitter, Lesbian... on anti depressants and in therapy...

No no I was not throwing my entitlement or nothing...
Just only saw the guy like twice he was in the WTU here and transitioning to VA care...
he had a prosthetic foot and was playing some basketball just messing around...
it really is astounding he was wearing jogging pants and you couldn't see the prosthetic unless you knew it was there...
he had a hitch in his step though and so after my usual 45 minute walk he was drinking at the snack bar... I walked laps on a track that is above and around the basketball area when it is set up...
he brought it up and aksed "let me ask you what's handicapable?" the Nurse at the VA used it...
I said "it is the new term for handicapped"
I didn't bring up PC the guy looked either Puerto Rican Hispano-Black or Mulatto....
and he said what I typed he was cool but bewildered at the VA.
He noticed me powerwalking at ~4.1 mph and was impressed and after I discovered he was "disabled not defeated" I was in awe that at that stage in his rehab he was walking and scampering so well.
People are REALLY tired of this bullshit unless they gain by it.

Since the Constitutional purpose of the census is apportioning Congressional districts, I answered only the questions that established that I was a person who lives in my district, and left the rest blank. I never heard from them.
Of course, I suppose one of their employees could have filled the rest in any way they wanted to.

That is an interesting thought- dystopias. I could be wrong about this but here is what it seems like to me.
Liberals favorite dystopias seem to be ones brought on by climate change, overpopulation, food shortages etc.
Conservative seem to favor ones like Zombie apocalypse, EMP attacks, Soviet invasions, nuclear wasteland, etc.
One could make an argument that conservative's dystopia is based around a complete breakdown of social order and lack of that social network, whereas a liberal's is more focused on the damage to the planet, which is really about damage the lack of resources have done to their society.
I have always wondered if dystopias are people imagining a post-societal reality that they would want to live in. The one you find more appealing to exist in is the one you gravitate to.
I am not sure what this says, but it is something I think about and argue with friends about. It is a good conversation starter.

Harry Reid, by keeping things off of Obama's desk, was probably trying to save the Democrats. After ObamaCare he knew what he was dealing with in the White House. And he likely thought that just shutting everything down would prevent the Prince of Petulance from vetoing things that everyone would be saying "Huh? Why veto this?" about.
His was a delaying action - delay everything to maintain party unity, to keep splits in the party between legislators and the White House from being so obvious even Politico would notice. Now he can no longer do that and Prince Petulant is throwing about his ideas to the point that the Democrat House leadership is charging in and saying "No."
And now the Keystone XL bill has passed the senate. Now the Prince Petulant can veto. And no a thousand bills with real bipartisan support can go to the veto pen.
Now the fun can come forward, now the intra-party fight that the Democrat leadership has been trying to stave off can be fueled.
And with Chait declaring that he is exhausted by the demands of the hard left, the real internal fight of the Left and the Democrats (whether reported or not) can get on.

You could be right. Leftist dystopias like soylent green or that one Star Trek episode could be said to be more about what should be done to prevent them (population control) than about what it would say about the human condition.
Did anyone ever read a series of books done by.. SM Stirling (I think) that were set in the Terminator universe. The first book was interesting but it quickly got tiresome but one thing I think the author got dead to rights was that some of the human collaborators with Skynet were doing it so that they themselves would be able to enjoy a perfect, untouched planet after all of the other humans were annihilated. Of course, Skynet did not give a shit about the environment, and was just using them up until they stopped being useful when they were eliminated, but it struck a true cord for me about some of the environazi's motivations.
I was also reminded of it when the history channel ran that "Life after People" series, which seemed disturbing, not for it's content, but because it seemed way to positive on the idea.
