4 Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, January 29, 2015. On this day in 2009 Governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich was removed from office following his conviction on several corruption charges, including the alleged solicitation of personal benefit in exchange for an appointment to the United States Senate as a replacement for then U.S. president-elect Barack Obama. He was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison and is still there.

Someone seeking to be confirmed as the nation's chief law enforcement officer says it is OK to break the law. I am flabbergasted. This country is not the same country I was born and grew up in.

Officials sent home 66 Palm Desert High School students Wednesday, telling them to miss up to seven days of classes because they haven't been immunized for measles.

When I first entered school in the early 50s before you could walk in the door and register you had to have a certificate from the county health department or a doctor saying you had been immunized for a host of diseases. We have actually gone backwards in our community health now.

What has changed since the 50s and now? Probably some phony call that this was discrimination and we have a massive influx of legal and illegal migrants from 3rd world shitholes that we no longer process through a facility like Ellis Island.

Democrats also want their children to get a good education, and as a result something new and bipartisan is happening in the world of education policy. There appears to be a great awakening across the ideological spectrum to the fact that primary and secondary education is failing badly and that the entrenched enemies of reform, the teachers' unions, are much too powerful. The unions are a key impediment to much-needed education reforms. Everyone knows it and now more people are willing to say it out loud.

Self correcting problem the way I see it.

And there is no need for the scare quotes around the word 'treated'. Modern sewage treatment discharge water is cleaner than the surface stream the water is being discharged into.

If you want to frighten people, ask about what happens to all the bad stuff that was removed from the raw sewage, where does that bad stuff go?

Answer: The bad stuff is renamed 'sludge' and is trucked out into the country where it is dumped on the ground and relabeled again. 'Fertilizer' they call it.

113 Measles? If your kids have been vaccinated there is nothing to worry about, right? The only people who have to worry are those parents who refuse to have their kids inoculated against common childhood diseases.

Self correcting problem the way I see it.

False. Not everyone who is vaccinated actually develops an immunity. Additionally, there is a non-insignificant portion of the population which can not (medically) receive vaccinations.

They are generally protected through what is known as 'herd immunity.' For measles, 90% of the population needs to be immunized in order for the un-immunized 10% to remain safe. By expanding that number over 10%, we are risking every infant in America (the vaccine can't be delivered until several months after birth) and all those whose genetics prevent them from being treated.

Failure to vaccinate is not localized to the individual.

Your right to free choice ends precisely when it interferes with the natural rights of another. That's why the left can never admit that a fetus is a person - they'd have to admit that depriving a baby of life is not only a natural crime, but is in conflict with all of our founding documents, laws and freedoms. It's the same with vaccines. Your choice to not vaccinate (I use 'your' in a general sense) DOES impact others.

I'd normally make a Salk joke at your expense here, but I seriously can't get my mind around this: We force (in a general sense) all of our children to congregate in one place, five days a week. The state assumes an in loco parentis role and is tasked with the education (and safety) of our kids.

They USED to require that children be vaccinated - so as to protect them from preventable, potentially fatal diseases - but now... eh, not so much.

I understand (disagree vehemently, but understand) that the State doesn't like thinking about having to protect kids from active shooters, but I can not fathom that the same State that mandates/regulates EVERYTHING 'for our own good' is moving away from the safety herd immunity provides.

136 I question the timing. If you have a measles outbreak at school, that generally means you have already been exposed so it's probably already too late to make the unvaccinated kids stay home for seven days.

Of course, out of an abundance of caution, those kids should stay home, in isolation, and not interact with other kids, or other people who might be unsuspecting carriers. So if you haven't vaccinated your kids, you should keep them locked up in a broom closet, for their own protection, and feed them through a slot in the door.

Even more ironic, Vic: it WORKED!

One of the rationales for all of us getting immunized before going to school was, of course, that we'd be protected from communicable diseases. And we wouldn't spread any.

I don't remember getting the shots, but vividly recall getting the Salk "sugar cube" polio immunization. It was then in a very early stage, and lots of parents worried that the vaccine itself would give the kiddies polio. The law of averages reassured most parents back in those more innocent days....

My conservatism does not extend to worrying unduly about Freedom From Immunization. If, say, Mark Levin goes full Angry-Kermit-the-Frog about forced inoculation, I will be too busy remembering all the diseases I DIDN'T] get.

155 Small businesses are dying in America.

We're rated 12th now in new startups.

According to Gallup, the United States now ranks 12th in the world in business startup activity. Italy, one of the weaker countries in the Eurozone, has a higher rate of business startups than the US. This isn't a statistical quirk. Entrepreneurship, the special sauce that launches new business, is in steep decline here for the first time ever.

"When small and medium-sized businesses are dying faster than they're being born, so is free enterprise," writes Jim Clifton, Chairman and CEO of Gallup. "And when free enterprise dies, America dies with it."

For six years, the number of small businesses closing has exceeded the number of businesses starting. The number of business deaths exceeded births in 2008 for the first time in US history and has gotten worse in the ensuing years. Since 2010, the rate of small business closures has increased.

America in decline.

Wouldn't surprise me. They do it all the time to Republican candidates. They love to caricature Republican candidates so that people will see them in that light and then they are free to make claims or inferences about them that reinforce the caricature. Huck is profiled as a crazy evangelical scold and they will do anything to reinforce that image.

WaPo took the floor plans of Romney's house in CA and made some silly tool where readers could compare the size of their house to his. Cause he's rich and evil, ya know, unlike Hillary who lives in a tar paper shack.

The msm has become an evil joke.

170 Did anyone read the comments on the story about peak food which Vic linked to? Go over there if you want a dose of UK insanity in the morning. If you don't have the fortitude yet, I'll summarize:

1. Global warming will kill us first.
2. There are too many people, especially in places like India, Pakistan, and China.
3. Births must be limited (in the UK) and cut off anyone from NHS and other socialist services if they have more than two children.

So, yeah, I'm feeling the love and compassion from our international leftist friends.

Along those lines, when the msm gets done sucking Obama's dick over the increase in jobs, they might want to note that it coincided with the ending of increased long term unemployment benefits.

recall getting the Salk "sugar cube" polio immunization. It was then in a
very early stage, and lots of parents worried that the vaccine itself
would give the kiddies polio. The law of averages reassured most parents
back in those more innocent days....

My conservatism does not
extend to worrying unduly about Freedom From Immunization. If, say, Mark
Levin goes full Angry-Kermit-the-Frog about forced inoculation, I will
be too busy remembering all the diseases I DIDN'T] get.

Posted by: MrScribbler at January 29, 2015 07:55 AM (P8YHq)"

The possibility of polio was also a lot less hypothetical. In every social circle there was always at least one person on crutches after having been paralyzed by polio. And that does not count the people in iron lungs.

Mark Levin is just a little too young to remember that.

Posted by: mindful webworker - the pun, boss, the pun! at January 29, 2015 07:47 AM (yCZVl)

Lots of variations on this joke, but here's one:

===================
A rabbi is sitting on an airplane next to a Chinese guy. After they have been flying together in silence for a while, the rabbi leans over and says, "You know, I've never forgiven you Chinese for what you did at Pearl Harbor."

The Chinese guy looks shocked and replies, "What the hell are you talking about?!?!? It was the Japanese the bombed Pearl Harbor, not the Chinese."

The rabbi says, "Japanese, Chinese, what's the difference?"

A little while later, the Chinese man says, "You know, I've never forgiven you Jews for sinking the Titanic." The rabbi looks confused and mad and says, "What are you talking about? The Jews didn't have anything to do with that! An iceberg sank the Titanic!"

The Korean guy replies, "Iceberg, Goldberg, what's the difference?"
