Our Asshole President Drops His Asshole Proposal to Tax the Education Savings of the Middle Class

It is becoming impossible to avoid the conclusion that Obama has a visceral hatred of America and its middle class which has largely (and positively) shaped its civic culture for 200+ years, but that won't stop the media from ignoring it anyway.

President Barack Obama is abandoning his proposal to eliminate Section 529 -- the popular tax break used by millions of Americans to save for college -- following a big backlash, not only from Republicans and parents, but also from his own Democratic allies.

"Given it has become such a distraction, we’re not going to ask Congress to pass the 529 provision so that they can instead focus on delivering a larger package of education tax relief that has bipartisan support, as well as the president's broader package of tax relief for child care and working families," a White House official said Tuesday.

Actually I think it was a stunt from the start. The point of it is to propose an outright attack on the Middle Class so that our energies are expended defending against that attack and not expended on offense repealing ObamaCare.

We then get a the feeling we've "won one" and have less of an appetite to fight.

In fact we won nothing. This was always a Negotiating Point, proposed only to be bargained away.

It is interesting that Obama can propose such attacks on the middle class and yet the middle class seems cool with it so long as he is ultimately blocked from actually executing the attack. I assume that is because of his Media Flanking Cover -- I'm pretty sure a Republican who proposed aggressively attacking the Middle Class would get pinned on that, even if he later retreated.

According to The New York Times, Obama and his advisers were lobbied directly by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi while she flew with the president on a flight from India to Saudi Arabia. Other Democrats, including House Budget Committee Ranking Member Chris Van Hollen, were also big critics of the proposal.

So: Barack Obama is more left-wing, and more of an anti-Middle-Class class warrior, than the socialist Nancy Pelosi.

I repeat myself. Obama is a lousy negotiator. If that was a negotiating point, it did nothing for him. The GOP didn't beat him on this point, his own party did. The country did. Obama gained nothing on this. In fact, I submit he lost. It is going to be more difficult for the liberals to argue that conservatives are being crazy when they suggest that the government is coming for their retirement accounts. We now know that that is precisely what they would like to do.

Obama is a lousy negotiator. He has never won a negotation.

It will stop being a stunt though. Next Hillary brings it up. Then whoever. The idea's out there now and like all batshit crazy liberal ideas it gains traction.

Let's be real here, industry-by-industry: Higher ed is a financial disaster, but academia supports the left, so the left has to support academia. Public medicine is a financial disaster, but public medicine supports the left, so the left has to support public medicine. Social security and social safety nets are financial disasters, but... are you getting the trend here?

They want your 529s. They want your HSAs. They want your 401ks. And they'll get them. But they know it doesn't happen overnight or on the first try. You say it once, then you say it again a year later, then six months, and by the time it becomes an issue of regular discourse the party is aligned behind it.

Stand by, I promise those of you under 40 will live see more of your private property nationalized. It's the only way these shit programs stay afloat. "Fairness."

33 Remember: what is called the "middle class" is a hallmark of societies that either have thrown off, or are in the process of throwing off, their aristocracy.

Feudalism = Communism = Socialism when it comes to this. The idea is that there should be a ruling class (be it The Gentry, or The Party) and everyone else should be serfs (by whatever term). A middle class which is free to be its own agent is antithetical to that order.

So, if you're a Prog/Commie, you necessarily must hate and want to destroy the middle class.

Until we get rid of the need for college education all together, they are necessary tax relief (no such thing as a "tax subsidy") for middle income families. That some college or other will likely receive the funds (pretty sure in TX you can use them for trade schools), does not change the fact that the *primary* beneficiaries of these plans are families.

Anything that raises taxes on families is bad.

I'd be in favor of getting rid of 529s as well. For a different reason than you though. 529s, along with IRAs, 401Ks, mortgage deduction, child credit, etc is the reason why 47% pay no income tax.

Get rid of all tax deductions and lower the tax rates. That way everyone has skin in the game, and teh govt doesn't force people into making decisions in order to get a tax deduction.

Doesn't even have to be a flat tax. Keep the graduated tax system but lower the rates. 5%, 15%, 25%, 30%, with $0 deductions.

87 Back in the 80s I thought Madonna was edgy. Now after having been bombarded with that kind of crap over 25 years, she seems pretty damned tame.

20 years ago the idea of nationalized health care was an outrageous pipe dream. Now it's all but reality.

What seems unthinkable becomes tolerated and then accepted after continually being bombarded by it. And hence we have the earlier spectacle of a gay lawyer eager to defend the citizenship rights of those who go and join al Qaeda. And we have the seeds planted that hey, nationalizing savings accounts are on the table. Unthinkable today. Twenty years from now...accepted.

Happy, comfortable, achieving, self sufficient, but not super rich? How dare you! This violates everything I believe is possible! Everyone excitedly squeaks "squirrel!" and goes tearing off after it.

Meanwhile, Obama's already existing set of outlandish and colossal federal subsidies to the reliably Democratic educrat class continue, and go unremarked in the confusion.

Since pretty much the majority of student loans have now been federalized, Obama is continuing with his executive-order based giveaway plan regarding those federalized loans.

If these debt-sodden young graduates go to work in "public service", says Obama, and you can expect that will be an expansively defined category, and make modest payments that are limited to only 10% of their take-home pay, then their entire remaining loan balance will be forgiven after ten years.

Obama hasn't talked about the debt and deficit impact of this plan, for obvious reasons, because it's going to be absolutely huge.

Remember: what is called the "middle class" is a hallmark of societies
that either have thrown off, or are in the process of throwing off,
their aristocracy.

Feudalism = Communism = Socialism when it comes to this. The idea
is that there should be a ruling class (be it The Gentry, or The Party)
and everyone else should be serfs (by whatever term). A middle class
which is free to be its own agent is antithetical to that order.

So, if you're a Prog/Commie, you necessarily must hate and want to destroy the middle class.

Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) - TrueCon at January 28, 2015 12:48 PM (M1uf/)"

In re the frequent longbow/crossbow debates in which we frequently indulge. Both England and France were feudal societies but England had a fairly large group of yeomen farmers who owned and farmed their own land. By Feudal standards they were the nearest thing to a middle class since they were neither serfs nor aristocracy. It was the yeomen farmers who practiced with the long bow from childhood and provided a valuable military force to the kings of England. Also, being able to kill a man armored with chain mail from 200 yards away served as a deterrent to the king and the local aristocracy against screwing with them too much.

The French did not have such a yeoman class. The French aristocracy definitely did not want to have such a class. They preferred to hire crossbowmen from Italy rather than allow a large number of their own people to be skilled in the use of arms. They were willing to suffer repeated military defeat at the hands of the British rather than allow that sort of social development.

$50,000 per 0-Care recipient per year is a lot more than $8,000 per person per year for health care.

Plus, the same CBO report says that there will still be @ 20 -30 million uninsured Americans, so it's not like we're spending these astronomical sums of money on 0-Care so that we can have universal coverage. We'll still have tens of millions of uninsured even after 0-Care is fully implemented, and we'll be bankrupting ourselves to pay for the hugely overpriced 0-Care subsidies.

It is beyond idiotic. It is insane.

160 It is interesting that Obama can propose such attacks on the middle class and yet the middle class seems cool with it so long as he is ultimately blocked from actually executing the attack.

People (the LIV's) don't see this as a statement of his intent. He intends to tax everything not nailed down. He desires the confiscation of our savings.

That he was prevented this time doesn't mean he's giving up.

And most people only see that it didn't work today. They don't apply today's lessons regarding his intent and desireto their image of Obama.

172 First off, the left gets a taste of how hard it is to take something back once it's been given - after all, the Section 529 tax treatment is a fairly recent invention.

Secondly, the goal here for the Obama-types is to turn college into a government benefit. They will then be able to decide who gets in, where they go, what programs are offered, who's hired to run them, etc. - well, to an even greater degree than they already do.

The 0.1% will still have options. Everyone else who ever plans to have a kid will obsessively monitor every word he ever utters in public, every word he ever drops into a blog comment (oops), because the Obamacollege admissions process becomes a giant black box run on top of a data mining operation Beria would be proud of.

You can not be talking about the infamous "fiscal cliff" tax bill. Rate increases and deductions eliminations all over that thing.

-----

No I am talking about the general debate over taxes. The right in general won in that the middle class taxes generally only go in one direction, and that is lower. Sure some taxes get passed under the name of a penalty, and short-term FICA tax cuts go back into effect, but general tax rates for the middle class have only gone in one direction for 20 years.

That doesn't mean the fight will never happen again - just that the left is finding it difficult to raise taxes on the middle class. I mean they could have let the Bush tax rate cuts expire with all taxes being raised. They didn't.

No doubt the middle class has a good case of cognitive dissonace. But what the middle class has not done - is vote for a middle class tax raise. Now you can argue that they have by voting for Obama and the stimulus and Obamacare and to be taxed indirectly through other means - e.g., inflation, etc. There is some truth to it. But my point is this - the middle class is not voluntarily voting to increase the amount of direct taxes they pay. The left has so far lost that battle.

241 172 First off, the left gets a taste of how hard it is to take something back once it's been given - after all, the Section 529 tax treatment is a fairly recent invention.

251 Speaking of Marx -- leftism has just reached The End Times, when now the students at Berkeley are staging a coup in the social science department because they're forced to read Marx -- who is too right-wing for their tastes. I kid you not:

http://www.dailycal.org/2015/01/20/occupy-syllabus/

" Occupy the syllabus

We are calling for an occupation of syllabi in the social sciences and humanities. This call to action was instigated by our experience last semester as students in an upper-division course on classical social theory. Grades were based primarily on multiple-choice quizzes on assigned readings. The course syllabus employed a standardized canon of theory that began with Plato and Aristotle, then jumped to modern philosophers: Hobbes, Locke, Hegel, Marx, Weber and Foucault, all of whom are white men. The syllabus did not include a single woman or person of color.

We have major concerns about social theory courses in which white men are the only authors assigned. These courses pretend that a minuscule fraction of humanity — economically privileged white males from five imperial countries (England, France, Germany, Italy and the United States) — are the only people to produce valid knowledge about the world. This is absurd. The white male syllabus excludes all knowledge produced outside this standardized canon, silencing the perspectives of the other 99 percent of humanity.

The white male canon is not sufficient for theorizing the lives of marginalized people. None of the thinkers we studied in this course had a robust analysis of gender or racial oppression. They did not even engage with the enduring legacies of European colonial expansion, the enslavement of black people and the genocide of indigenous people in the Americas. Mentions of race and gender in the white male canon are at best incomplete and at worst racist and sexist. We were required to read Hegel on the “Oriental realm” and Marx on the “Asiatic mode of production,” but not a single author from Asia. We were required to read Weber on the patriarchy, but not a single feminist author. The standardized canon is obsolete: Any introduction to social theory that aims to be relevant to today’s problems must, at the very least, address gender and racial oppression.

The exclusions on the syllabus were mirrored in the classroom. Although the professor said he wanted to make the theory relevant to present issues, the class was out of touch with the majority of students’ lives. The lectures often incorporated current events, yet none of the examples engaged critically with gender or race. The professor even failed to mention the Ferguson events, even though he lectured about prisons..."

When even Karl Marx is a right-wing white oppressor, we have reach the End Times.

268 That BBC Super Saturn article is a monument to scientific illiteracy.

It states that the rings are in orbit around the system's star, but then refer to the object at the center of the orbit as a planet.

Then it states that gaps exist in the rings, leading to the conclusion that "moons" have formed in orbit around the thing they (correctly) revert to calling a star.

Stars are born from gas clouds. Remnants of the gas cloud form planetary disks. From those disks, planets accrete. Around those planets, from the remnants of the disk, moons may form.

So. What stage of planetary system has been detected, and what items do we seem to see? Star, with disk, with some planet formation in progress.

What we do not detect is a star that is sometimes a planet, nor do we see moons orbiting the star.

This is elementary school stuff.

There was never any chance this was going anywhere... Who  ever came up with this must  believe only upper middle class people benefitted, which just isn't true.

BTW one of the ways less affluent parents are able to afford to send their kids to college is because the 529 plans are not just for parents, grandparents can also contribute... And if you're a lucky kid  instead of just having two people (your parents) you'll have six (your parents and both set of grandparents)  helping you. What could be more American than that?

"Middle Class" is a Marxist term. It's more accurate to describe it as the working/taxpaying/responsible class. The earners that make a living caring for themselves and their loved ones INDEPENDENT of anyone or anything else.

That is the real enemy. Money, wealth and property represent the fruits of your labors and precious limited time on this earth. That's what they want. Once they get it, they own YOU.

As Momma Sefton said, "evil flourishes."

Bull's eye. Do the same thing with health insurance. None from employer; you don't auto insurance from your employer, do you?

No withholding for anything. Write a check.* Enjoy the outrage.

*Everybody. Gross up welfare payments, and then tax them back down to where they are now. Make the bruthas write a check, or count out greenbacks that used to be in their wallets, but now are in the tax collector's hot little hand. Then anyone wanting to raise the tax rate will be lucky if he doesn't get capped.

I'm arguing that there has been no real change from the status quo that has existed for a long time. I argued that he would not pass an order granting amnesty to all illegal immigrants. My understanding is that has not happened. As far as non-enforcement goes, there was pretty much non-enforcement for a long time.

But the Chairman [Congressmen George Miller] has also signalled greater ambitions. At a hearing last month, Mr. Miller put the 401(k) system into play. Under the current system, employers match employee contributions that aren't taxed until redeemed, an indirect subsidy worth some $80 billion today. "We have to start to think about in Congress . . . whether or not we want to continue to invest that $80 billion for a policy that's not generating what we now say it should," Mr. Miller said. "For a taxpayer investment of this size, we must ensure that the structure of 401(k)s adequately protects the nest eggs of participating workers."

346 I really don't think Obama formally "did" anything with respect to Amnesty, which is why there's no real"executive order" that's been issues, basically he just go the guy in charge of DHS to write guidelines about who they will prioritize for deportations.

I'm not excusing it, but he basically made a big speech about what he was already doing anyway.

We'll have to see what happens eventually, but many were saying everyone was going to get formally pardoned and made citizens overnight.

I really think Republicans could make hay with this, but unfortunately too many in charge buy into the "Latinos now decide elections" bullshit meme.

Now, with his "instruction" to DHS not to deport, he has essentially removed that fear. That will change their behavior, and not in a way that is good for American civil society.

No, I think plenty conservatives overstated what Obama was going to do . Being a doomsdayer is never out of fashion on our side of the aisle.

I think Obama no doubt wanted to basically blanket amnesty all of these people but was convinced he couldn't legally do it so they just pretended to do it anyway.

I'm a border hawk across the board, so I'm not trying to minimize the damage, I still think it's the stuff of banana republics to pick and choose what laws to enforce as punishment for not getting the bill you want, but I also think it's reversible overnnight with a new President.

Obama's answer.."because we don't want to appear to be interfering in another country's elections".

Yes, because any high profile leader of a country should stop meeting all the other heads of state or leaders months before their elections....lest they look too much like a leader to their countrymen.

IIRC, a work permit will provide cover for the employer, at least. All the employer has to show is that they made a good-faith effort to determine that the worker is here legally. Since a work permit (by law) shall only be issued to legal aliens, proof of a work permit would be proof of that good-faith effort.

What's really going to suck is when a Republican gets into office. Because that Republican is going to face this choice: continue the not-amnesty-amnesty (and tick off the Republican base to boot) OR revoke every work permit issued between when the SCOAMT issued his not-amnesty-amnesty and Inauguration Day 2017 (or whenever a Republican finally gets elected).

438 " As far as I know, illegal immigrants were living here for years without much fear of deportation"

A little personal insight (from the Mrs. side of the family, which has members here from SoTB legally and er, questionably)...
thru the mid aughts there was a good deal of "fear" - or at least concern - that kept the illegals out of public space. Sure, plenty were still out and about, but just the threat of the INS was enough to send most scattering.
This changed with 42's dialing back - those here began to live quite a bit more "out in the open", but crossing the border was still considered a challenge, and one still did not want to get caught in an overt criminal act - that was a ticket out.
Under O'noway, that all changed. Crossing the border today is a fearless act - except for the occasional drug battles - and one can not just live openly, one can now demand (and receive) the same support structures once reserved for citizens...

It's a different world now.

443 All a Republican President would have to do is use an agency like the IRS to go after businesses that hired illegals. Make something like E-Verify mandatory for all businesses.

It may not have been politically smart to say out loud, but just making an environment of self-deporation would be far better than any sort of bureaucratic agency attempting to "round them up".

Also, the Obama Administration has supposedly 2 million or something deportations that it brags about. Obviously these are heavily massaged, but a Republican President could just point to those numbers and keep deporting.

Sorry didn't realize I had to do a ton of research to voice an opinion on this blog. I said that I do not think Obama has the cojones to pass an executive order on amnesty. Unless you can point me to the order, so far that statement has not been proven accurate.

I said I am unaware of the fact that all these working visas are being issued. Instead of providing evidence that they are (other than a hot air article that is quoting another article) you have failed to show that such visas are being issued.

But just to provide you with some reserach, please see this blaze article from a week ago that indicates that the administration has done nothing of substance so far. They are sill in the planning phase.

I never said Obama would do nothing on immigration. I fully expected him to use his executive discretion on enforcement. Other than announcing that he was going to use it, I'm not sure there is much difference between him and other presidents.

I suggest it is your research that is incorrect. You hear something so surmise it must be true.

I'll await for my apology, but I'm sure it will not be forthcoming.

Unless you can point me to the order, so far that statement has not been proven inaccurate.

The disease mixing and direct injection into elementary schools is just a nice bonus feature.

455 The free community college was a phony proposal to begin with. It was meant to boost Obama's abyssmal polling numbers for the new Congressional year. He is now polling at 50 percent favorable, which is bolstered by the 18-30 year olds who previously abandoned the stuttering chump. It'll go backdown to 38 percent in a month.

456 You sort of get the feeling that this 529 proposal was a negotiating point to be excised at the proper moment.

457 "So: Barack Obama is more left-wing, and more of an anti-Middle-Class class warrior, than the socialist Nancy Pelosi."

That's because he's also a racist.

I will apologize, but first youmust blow me.

462 It was a head fake all the way. The 529 thing was the distraction to hide something else.

What's he really after?

Posted by: Meremortal at January 28, 2015 03:28 PM (1Y+hH)

463 @462 Meremortal

"What's he really after?"

A guess would be private IRAs and 401k plans. Hitlery was bantering about that back in 2008, but that dropped off the wire. What remains of the solvent state public pension plans will probably be devoured as well.

Barky drops proposals like I drop a deuce - every day.

The difference is that I clean up after myself, while Ol' Barkster does not.

465 I don't see this as some sort of "clever move." This guy is going to try to get away with everything he can, and doesn't give a crap about anybody else, including any potential Dem successor.

It's more like a chimp throwing poo at a wall. If it sticks, fine. I got more poo to throw, anyway. If it doesn't stick, no biggie. I got more poo to throw, anyway. All that's important is that I have poo, and get to throw it.

466 the communists HATE the middle class. the middle class is the bourgeoisie. the bourgeoisie must be destroyed, and alinsky talks about this a lot. of course obambi hate the middle class. he believes all of this leftist drivel that he has been spoon fed his whole life.

Posted by: Mistress Overdone at January 28, 2015 06:52 PM (2/oBD)

467 Dammit Ace, of *course* Obama hates the middle-class, the entire left hates the middle-class because Marx says they (the bourgeoisie) are bad.

Obama's mentor preached against the evil of pursing 'middle-classness' saying it was a creation of whites to oppress and co-opt Blacks because the Black Liberation Theology of his church is just thinly veiled Marxism with "Black Africans in diaspora" taking the place of the proletariat, and a veneer of "Christianity" added to make it attractive to Black-Americans...

And now, the GOPe is on board with the Left's war on the middle-class.

468 Uh, I see that in 467, I inadvertently plagiarized a bit of Mistress Overdone's 466 comment. ... Yes, I missed the comment *directly* above my own made the same point as me. I blame Bush.

469 RE: Heh

You just figured this out?

When did you graduate CGSC? Did you forget EVERYTHING you learned about Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield (IPB)?

Shheeeesh!

I graduated it in '86. And I've used IPB for all kinds of thinks in all kinds of venues. It's VERY useful.

You collect the 'dots'. You connect the 'dots'. And then you can see the Big Picture.

You did not plagiarize at all. Like me, you were simply stating what the marxists and alinsky said about the "middle class." No worries!
