No, when they say 20mm & follow it up with 8 inches of snow, they're talking about 20mm of water falling as 20cm of snow at a 10:1 ratio.

Of course the 10:1 is just a rough estimate, since snow varies from 4:1 to 40:1 depending on temperature & all that.

67 (Today is the 97th anniversary of the death in 1918 of Canadian poet and physician John Alexander McCrae, author of "In Flanders Fields":

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Thanks for the links. I haven't read everything about Pegida because confusing. There's one article in today's FAZ about German sentiment that I mean to get back to. Pretty much half of the homepages is about Pediga, immigration, assimilation.

And since it appears that you read Krautish, you might like this response from a friend of mine. I'd sent him a description of a scary conversation I'd had with a Turkish cab driver in Berlin:

"Tja Michael. Wenn Du Deutscher wärest, würdest Du das hier nicht so schreiben dürfen. Denn wer wie Herr Sarrazin (lies das Buch mal) die Integration der "Friedensreligion" in die Deutsche Gesellschaft bezweifelt ist so was von einem Naaaazi. Da wir dann im Namen der political correctness die sogenannte Nazikeule geschwungen. Gruß"

A fully American ethnic turning around an old racial stereotype of the "mysterious East" and using it to mock the honkys, and doing it for fun. His wife isn't having that, and cockblocks him in front of the customer he's making fun of.

Burton Cummings needed help finding his piano after the intermission, so we knew we were in for a treat.

The NRO seems to have a mandate to tarnish and/or destroy anything related to the Tea Party. Palin, Cruz, Walker, etc. Seems they are attacking those that supported and rode the Tea Party to succeed.

Which is, like Glenn Reynolds said at Instapundit this morning, the Middle Class. The Tea Party represented Middle Class, therefore both the Republicans and Democrats are against it.

Why, Bill? By your own not-even-a-hypothesis, we'll lose a few miles of coastline. Most people can move inland. Not a huge deal.

In return, we get longer growing seasons and generally better weather (the temperature is like a grade- anything below 70 is failing).

And there's no evidence that man a) is contributing significantly or therefore b) could stop it if we wanted.

It's possible for valves to be stuck closed at high pressure. There's got to be an electrically operated valve on the water line right inside the door. Stuck closed by pressure the solenoid can't pull the valve open. If you could listen close, push the lever instead of the click - splash you get click - and maybe a hum or buzz from the solenoid trying, while it's doing that you open a nearby tap, lowering pressure, the solenoid is now strong enough to open the valve.
Quien sabe if that's a replaceable part.
If you've got a regulator on the house water line at the meter and can lower the internal house pressure to where the fridge works and everything else is ok that'd be the cheap fix.

Same thing happens with a magnetic door bolt that won't open if your pulling on the door when you key it.

His main problem is that he likes to spend a lot of money so he is forced to take a lot of parts that he should have avoided to stay out of bankruptcy court. Here lately he has been working mainly for Disney from what I can see. Those, while not all really good, were at least not all stinkers and some like open range were very good.

I read an interview with him where he said the same thing but added that the dialogue made it one of his most comfortable characters to play ever. Interesting considering the dialogue.
I wonder if since Whedon has a gift for realistic if very witty dialogue he just points his characters along simple solutions in their actions. kind of like a reverse Larry McMurtry who used to write characters that had complex actions but no descriptions or dialogue.
Just MHO. I'm not really a writer.

Also, there's nothing wrong with *not* being a Mal Reynolds-like person.

And, given the fact that a fair number of actors who have worked with Whedon are, indeed, Conservative (at least- Conservative from a Hollywood perspective), there's a good chance that all he was saying was, "No, I'm not the kind of guy who would kick someone else into a jet intake."

We are all programed into playing 'roles'... you are different around your Mom, than around the boys.... different around wifey, than at work...

We are pretty much forced into it by the expectations of others, and modern PC society.

The HAPPIEST people I know however, are the ones put most of that programming aside, and their various roles coalesce into a single entity.

Because it takes MUCH less energy to just be yourself.... than to put out the constant energy it takes, to play those roles...

377 My interpretation of Nathan Fillian's comments about *not* being Mal Reynolds was that it pertained more to the vision of Mal that Whedon had, as a really dark, grim, angry, tortured character. Although Fillian conveyed that well, he also brought a lot more lightheartedness and humor to the role perhaps than Whedon had initially envisioned.

The fact that the valve works OK when the water pressure is reduced (via the faucet) suggests that it is perhaps *not* the solenoid valve. After all, it clearly is receiving power, and the coil is not open. There *might* be some crud build-up in the valve that is weakening it's action, or dirty switch contacts that reduce current, but it clearly *does* work.

I would check the water line pressure first, before doing anything else.

461 So instead of being all judgey one should just tolerate mental illness?
And by tolerate, I mean just pretend it's OK instead of actually helping her get some assistance, or depending on the situation, getting yourself out of the situation for self-preservation?
Not healthy for anyone involved.

ABC news

"A Massachusetts woman was arrested during the blinding blizzard that walloped New England after she attacked her neighbor with a snowblower, police said today.

The incident took place as the freezing winds and snow continued to fall at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police were called to a home in Boston's upscale suburb of Arlington to find a 60-year-old woman suffering from lacerations to her foot.

Her alleged attacker, Barbara Davis, 61, was arrested on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, violating a restraining order, and mayhem. Anderson had a long-standing dispute with the victim, who was not seriously injured, police said.

As a follow-up, I don't think it is that no one is talking about it, it is that politicians do not want to make the tough decisions, because the country does not want to make the tough decision. You either cut benefits for the middle class or raise taxes on them. Neither are very popular. So we do nothing.

The first thing they need to go after is the thing that is really bankrupting SS and that is SSDI. Estimates are that 50% of those payouts are either outright fraud or abuse of the system.

payment for "mental health" issues should be halted unless confined to an institution. Payments to non-working yoots should be discontinued outright. That would immediately put SS back in the black.

521 Anyone remember that Bundy case in Nevada - the rancher who the Feds were trying to confiscate his cows b/c they were grazing n BLM land?

Well, one of his kids just got arrested today. He was in court for having an unregistered vehicle on his property (Utah). On his way out of court the police arrested him for interfering with an animal control officer. Then he scuffled with the officer and I think he will probably be charged with resisting. He is out of jail now, but has a court date. So out of date tag on a vehicle and a problem with his dog - hauled to court.

Anyone know if Harry Reid got that NV land for his solar energy SNAFU he had in mind?
