32 It's O/T
But I drug/dragged it from the tail end of the last thread for Carol.
...................
Carol,

If you're here, last night you were asking about towels and radiators.

Radiators work best when the natural rising convection currents of warm air are allowed to develop.
This is one reason why most radiators are shaped the way they are, with large surface areas, and a fairly good vertical rise.
By placing a towel over the top of the radiator, you interrupt the rising air currents, reducing the effectiveness of the radiator in transferring heat from the surface of the radiator to the room air, as well as the development of the rising currents of air.

You would be amazed at the reduction in efficiency caused by the dust that tends to develop at the bottom rear of many radiators over time.

In the old days, one could hold a burning cigarette over a clean, unobstructed radiator, and watch the effect of the rising column of warm air. And then go to a radiator where the air currents are blocked, and see the dramatic reduction in currents and heat flow.

I guess one could do the same with an incense stick if one wished.

There has been a revolution in privacy-destroying technology n the past 25 years. The very nature of government makes it inevitable that this technology will be used to create the kind of police state the the East German Stasi could only have dreamed about. A new kind of tyranny is coming, a bit at a time. But it will come.

85 Obama The Sentimentalist

Jonah's piece is short and to the point.

The WSJ is running a piece this morning that coincides, but with a different twist.

President Costanza's Jobs Boom

A new study shows that Mr. Obama needs a 'Seinfeld' epiphany.

In a 1994 "Seinfeld" episode, George realizes that "every decision that I have ever made in my entire life has been wrong. My life is the complete opposite of everything I want it to be." Jerry replies: "If every instinct you have is wrong, then the opposite would have to be right."

So Costanza approaches a gorgeous woman in the coffee shop and announces, "My name is George. I'm unemployed and I live with my parents." To his surprise, she's interested. He lands a job with the Yankees after insulting George Steinbrenner.

Maybe President Obama ought to take Jerry's advice too. That's our reading of a striking new economic study that examines Congress's decision to zero out extra unemployment benefits last year.

The authors find that this abrupt policy shift created some 1.8 million jobs, or slightly more than three of five net positions filled in 2014. The cuts also pulled a million workers who dropped out of the labor force back into the workplace. This reality happens to be the opposite of what Mr. Obama and other liberal sachems predicted.

then the article gets to the meat of the matter

Good news, every Juan!:

Republican leaders look for escape plan on immigration. And a familiar endgame in which Boehner is forced to move legislation through the House with broad Democratic support could be inevitable.

Allowing Obamas executive actions to stand and adding components of immigration reform favored by Republicans might persuade a group of centrist Democrats to join with the majority of the Senate GOP conference to pass an alternative.

Senate Republicans could try to sweeten the deal by adding other elements of immigration reform favored by Democrats to the Homeland Security funding bill. That might build a bipartisan majority in both chambers but would likely prompt a harsh reaction from the GOP base.

131 Ahhh I am glad to see that those who I knew would be on the side of hey once you are in public you have no expectation of privacy are ignoring the fundamental question of burden shifting.

Yes. It is axiomatic that once I set foot outside my house, my expectation of privacy drops to nearly nothing. I will happily grant that proposition.

What I will not grant, what should not be granted and what the supporters of such programs refuse to address is that I do not eliminate the presumption that I am innocent the second that I leave my house.

The reason the panopticon state is so dangerous is that it is premised on the notion that all must be watched and all data must be kept because all are suspects. Oh we need a database of all because some will be doing wrong and we need to be able to find them. Hey, you're not doing anything wrong so why do you care?

I care because there is nothing criminal in my leaving the house. There is nothing criminal in my getting into my car. There is nothing criminal in my driving to and fro about this country.

Tracking me presumes that I must be or that I might be doing something criminal. What is the theoretical justification for the presumption that those in public are to be presumed guilty and watched as such? Honestly, I would like to know.

It also presumes that those watching are not doing something criminal themselves. Come on, man, everyone knows that those with access to this information are using it to track current and former love interests. Of course they are. Yes, I doubt the inherent integrity and goodness of those in law enforcement. Those people are humans and thus have the same set of characteristics of those they are watching. Some percentage of those with access will use it wrongly. But, hey, pointing that out makes me all anarchist cop hater. These are my whatever hands in response to that.

I cannot wait to hear the justifications for the police use of the heat sensors where the cops can stand outside a house and use it to tell where people are inside the house. Yes, that's a real thing that is really being used.

Remember, when the UK camera surveillance system was set up they had to hire the people to operate the system, and the civil service position pays poorly, so they got who showed up: I have no idea if the rumor that these operators tend to focus on figuring out where the pretty girls hang out, and who goes to the bank when, and selling paparazzi images to the papers illegally.
Makes me rethink the whole justified panopticon state, really.

As free market conservatives, we wouldn't ban vans.

However, we would be willing to accept a bi-partisan compromise for a surtax on vans to pay for a van monitoring company run by my son --- err, I mean, a private sector initiative -- with a series of government grants, loans and credits to offset the surtax cost for lower income voters.

To be effective, there should be no statute of limitations so that government drones know that even if it takes another 20 years before there is another Republican government, they will eventually be prosecuted. Also provide for the forfeiture of government retirement if convicted. That is the one threat that government workers really fear. Also add a provision that even if government workers are ordered to target citizens for political reasons, they are still in violation and can have their pensions removed decades in the future.

With regard to recording the movements of everybody on the road:

The federal government has no business to watch anyone without probable cause and a warrant. Besides this, there is nothing in any of our founding documents to suggest that they have the right to do so. Just because they have found a way to take 40 odd percent of our income and thus have a large budget, there is no valid reason for them to spend it on technology to watch the population that pays their salary. Additionally, as any economist or analyst can tell you, the concept of prior restraint is not only hugely inefficient, it is outrageously expensive. If we have laws that describe the punishment for breaking a law, that should be sufficient for 90% of the population to avoid breaking that law. The other 10% of the population needs to be caught, prosecuted, and punished, instead of finding new and obscenely expensive ways to watch/limit the total population in order to try and prevent the 10% from breaking the law.

CBC Chair Threatens Racism Smear Against Fellow Dems in Seniority Fight

During jury instructions that I attended several years ago, the judge went to great lengths to inform us potential jurors that a person was presumed innocent until proven guilty. Now if I drive through a border area deemed high crime (and I do every day) the perception by the govt is that I'm a criminal worthy of their attention. The DEA has stripped the judge of his instructions. It's making my blood boil as I write this. Now couple this with IRS political retribution cases and NSA data gathering, a criminal case can be manufactured against an exceedingly large percentage of the populace, at the whim of a prosecutor or political party. Three felonies a day.

The dispute behind the hey if you are doing nothing wrong why do you care and MILITARIZED THUGS COPS is actually one about burden shifting.

Do the cops have the burden of proving guilt or do the citizens have the burden of proving innocence? Which assumption should be used when analyzing the propriety, note I did not say legality, of a law enforcement program?

That is what is truly at stake and that is why people on both sides get so worked up and that is not what is being addressed, at least not directly, in these arguments.
