Claim: Disney Eyeing Guardian of the Galaxy's Chris Pratt for Indiana Jones in New Raiders Reboot

I like him, but as Indy...?

As Indy, my once and maybe future all-time favorite Action Hero...?

Eh, Indy's smart. Not a genius, but up there. I know Chris Pratt has mostly played dumb-guy roles, and I shouldn't typecast him, but... Okay I'll say, I don't think he can come across as smart enough to play Indy.

Meanwhile, they're casting him opposite Denzel Washington in a... Magnificent Seven remake. I assume Denzel will play the Yul Brenner role, because bald.

Meanwhile x2, yeah, they're serious about doing the all-girl Ghostbusters remake. Here's your cast:

Okay, Kristin Wiig, fine, I like her (though most don't).

Melissa McCarthy? Are we all still pretending we find her schtick as refreshing and wild as we pretended to find it in 2009? Are we not yet tired of her?

The other two are two lame cast members from the very awful current season of Saturday Night Live. I don't know their names. I just know I see clips of them sometimes.

These clips are so funny that I, get this, forget to laugh.

Eh.

Well, Hollywood exists to teach us one lesson:

Life is horrible and the human imagination is worse.

Oh: Good Men Did Nothing, so they went ahead and did a new Fantastic Four reboot.

I'm willing to at least let Pratt have a fair hearing.

That said- *WHY* reboot Raiders? Why not write a new Indiana Jones story? They're pulp fiction (in the original sense). They're penny dreadfuls. None of them have to link to any others, except for the occasional line like
"What is that?"
"The Ark of the Covenant."
"Are you sure?"
"Pretty sure."

Just assert "Indiana Jones and the [noun] of [adjective]" and be done with it.

63 Indiana Jones should have been played by Tom Selleck, who was unable to do it because of his Magnum, PI contract.

Watch Raiders with that in mind and you'll realize that Harrison Ford is just too dour and joyless for the part.

So, Chris Pratt would actually have been better...if Raiders weren't such a classic and we had a time machine.

Why would you remake movies like Raiders or Ghostbusters that, while being fairly big budget, managed to resonate with people far more than anyone expected?

What makes a good idea a great movie are accidents that happened. Some good editing, great takes, ad libbing, lucky casting, zeitgeist of the culture, etc.

The characters from the first one were coherent; ne'er-do-well university deadwood suddenly thrown out into the 'real' world.

Female versions don't really make much sense as photo-negatiaves of the original ones.

Melissa McCarthy isn't really that funny or interesting, and casting her i presume as Peter Venkman will not work at all.

1) Release a big budget movie with name brand recognition, it doesn't have to end up being good
2) If it doesn't end up good, reboot it and draw the fans back to the theater by promising it will be good this time

They don't have to make good movies anymore! They can make a steaming pile of crap, cash in on it, then cash in on it again by rebooting it because it was bad!

113 Meanwhile, they're casting him opposite Denzel Washington in a... Magnificent Seven remake. I assume Denzel will play the Yul Brenner role, because bald.

You can't remake the Magnificent Seven because that's a remake of Seven Samurai. No. 2 Son and I tried to watch Magnificent Seven as a compare and contrast exercise because we're film geeks and we couldn't get 15 minutes into Mag Sev.

There is a really interesting conversation to be had around "A Fistful of Dollars" being a shot by shot remake of of "Yojimbo", but there's nothing interesting to say about "Magnificent Seven".

119 The Spider Man reboots and now the Fantastic Four reboot has made me think that Hollywood has a formula:
1) Release a big budget movie with name brand recognition, it doesn't have to end up being good
2) If it doesn't end up good, reboot it and draw the fans back to the theater by promising it will be good this time
They
don't have to make good movies anymore! They can make a steaming pile
of crap, cash in on it, then cash in on it again by rebooting it because
it was bad!
I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

124 The Indiana Jones movies are event stories, not character stories. The story is always about what Indiana Jones does, but never who he is. Jones has many problems and adventures, but at the end of the movie his role in society is exactly what it was before - part-time archaeology professor and full-time knight errant.

135 I enjoyed the Star Trek "reboot" (esp the first one). The original series, while beloved, really kind of blew chunks of cheese. Modern cinematography/CGI actually makes a BFD with a Sci-Fi product. And I thought they did a nice job harkening back to the original series and characters while telling a new story.

I can't think of a lot of other re-boots or re-makes that have interested me the way Star Trek one did.

Not really. The reason you'll see FF and Spider-Man and X-Men rebooted periodically is because the properties are leased. And back then (when the leases were written) Marvel wasn't looking to get into movie making.

So when they wrote the leases, they based them on how long from the previous movie it had been before the lease lapsed. So, to keep the leases, the studios have to make new movies using those properties every so often. If they don't, then they have to give them back to Marvel.

I'll point out that the first Spider-Man movie, and the 2nd (with Doc Oc) were very successful and very well liked. The third one wasn't as good, but that was because they tried to force too many story-lines into the movie.

Yet Spider-Man has already been rebooted. Because Sony doesn't want to give it back to Marvel.

The unit had been involved in a massacre of a native village (Higgens was sick or something, so not there) and the British army swept everything under the rug.

I don't think you can ever make a good Fantastic Four movie. I *do* think you could make a good FF TV series.

The FF plots were usually too long and intricate to make into movies. There's too much setup to do a movie. OTOH, a TV series could take a fair amount of time setting things up if it needed to.

358 135 I enjoyed the Star Trek "reboot" (esp the first one).

Posted by: Y-not at January 27, 2015 05:47 PM (9BRsg)

I liked the Trek reboots too (though I could have done without the now cliche Evil Admiral false flag deal from Into Darkness; at best, that could have been fleshed out more; at worst, just drop it and give us an actual credible non-Federation villain).

Some Trek fans just love to hate the new films.....but then again, some Trek fans are liberal SJW scum that can't watch a flick without some hamhanded Progressive narrative plastered all throughout.

Gene Roddenberry Trek is Season 1 of TNG: all the characters are perfect humans in the socialist utopia. Which, it turns out, doesn't make for good stories.

Some Trek fans see anything other than that as some "betrayal" of Roddenberry's "vision." *jackoff motion*

The more I've learned about who I am and how I feel about the world, the more I'm finding fellow fans of my beloved childhood TV franchise intolerable.

Judge Anderson was cool and Ma-Ma was proof that a woman can, in fact, be whatever she wants, including a sociopathic gang leader who bit a guy's junk off.

420 I still think the best "re-imagining" of Star Trek was JM Straczynski's.

He was going to take Star Trek as real, gut level - not some fantasy utopia, but a real functioning universe. Just take the original characters and start their 5 year mission. Emphasizing the unknown, the large blank spots in knowledge, and being out of contact with "home". It was intended to have a central mystery to slowly solve, some recurring themes, but the main one being - these guys are all out there, in the dark, alone.

Instead we got "Enterprise - Acres and Acres of Vats".

481 420 I still think the best "re-imagining" of Star Trek was JM Straczynski's.

551 The reason to see the Star Trek reboot is Karl Urban. He's got the younger McCoy down pat. Droll but not going all ridiculous Southern affectation which McCoy became susceptible to in his TOS dotage.

552 John Adams was pretty good. Paul Giamatti does a great job as said character.

The guy who plays Moriarty from the BBC Sherlock is also in it as his son in law.

553 Okay, how about the guy who played the cave man in the Pauly Shore movie. He can play Indy, & he'll be chased around by a dead Egyptian, kinda like Bubba Ho-Tep.

Brilliant!

558 What is sad, is that you could do a really good mini-series on the American revolution, or certain parts of it, or all of it. It would be awesome - if historically accurate. Sadly, we will never see that.

I started watching last night about 20 minutes in. One of the first lines was "We're going to need more guns." (or something like that). If only people could understand the meaning of that line in context with the 2nd A and a government that wants to limit guns.

Needless to say it went down hill from there.

Did she figure it out or did she allege Saffron had Companion training? She just says she must have had the training because she almost seduced Inara.

571 Kind of off-topic...

Why doesn't the GOP Congress limit the copyright term to 35 years from the death of the author? There's a serious constitutional argument that the Congress must set "limits" to the duration of a copyright. So it's the right thing to do, only, it would cripple many many many corporations.

But I see a benefit, in that it would cripple many many many corporations. Such as Disney. And their subsidiary, ABC.

And it would spare our grandchildren endless remakes of Ewok movies.

572 An all-female Ghostbusters reminds me of that famous all-midget Western, "The Terror of Tiny Town." Though it probably won't be as funny.

Posted by: Trimegistus at January 27, 2015 07:57 PM (/eOcU)

573 I like how the Ghostbusters reboot oh so bravely replaced the men with women but they weren't quite brave enough to replace the token black character with an asian or hispanic or *gasp* another whitey.

Posted by: booger at January 27, 2015 08:13 PM (tzcDX)

574 Late to the party, but for anyone still reading - for the Buckaroo Banzai re-launch mentioned above, you've got to go with someone that has that tall, angular, weirdness combined with an otherworldly charisma that Peter Weller had in the original. Jonny Lee Miller would actually fit the part quite well, as would Ioan Gryffud, and, if you could talk him into dying his hair, Simon Baker might be able to swing it. It's sad to say it, but for someone with the right "American" look, you've got to go to the U.K. or the Commonwealth countries. Come to think of it, that guy playing the title character in "Gallavant" would work as well.

575 I like Harrison Ford as much as anybody, but the whole "OMG! NOBODY else can play Indy!" thing is utter B.S.

Forty years and we've only got 4 movies because we waited for the return of "the only Indy."

We should've been cranking those things out like James Bond movies: get a new Indy every few years and keep it going - AND KEEP IT IN THE 1940s, damn it! (I want to see him fight "the Japs!")

Posted by: RKae at January 27, 2015 08:33 PM (St5v2)

576 It's really a sad comment that we don't have any A-listers that could do a credible Buckaroo. I mean, who do you go with..... Johnny Depp? Paul Rudd? Ryan Reynolds? Mark Wahlberg? Tom Cruise? Alton Brown?

Posted by: A. Pendragon at January 27, 2015 08:39 PM (wJliR)

577 So what's the deal with the black Johnny Storm? I mean, we know the real reasons, but what's the rationale? Are the step siblings or something?

Couldn't they have just made them BOTH black, or would that have defeated the purpose, i.e. talking down to confused and annoyed comic book fans?

I'm torn between the thought that diversity-baiting and publicity whoring are bad things, and the thought that anything which degrades the rancid, fetid, stinking, ancient canon of Marvel/DC comic books in general, and over-revered crap like THE FANTASTIC FOUR! in particular, is a good thing.

A remake that hasn't sucked? That's a pretty short list indeed. None these guys can hold McQueen's jock strap.
Posted by: Ricardo Kill at January 27, 2015 05:38 PM (LA7Cm)

The remake of The Thomas Crown Affair with the less dynamic Brosnan is actually more compelling than the original, ironically with McQueen.
It's more interesting reviewing movie stills of the original capturing the style of its two leads than rewatching as a film.
Nevertheless, the remake itself was almost twenty years ago. At least barren Hollywood's current spent-hacks know better than fucking around with Bullitt.

584 I'm so sick of super hero movies that have light beams shooting up into the sky.

Posted by: jellytoast at January 28, 2015 06:58 AM (km1CN)

585 I always thought they should reboot the Fantastic Four as the four "elements" -- you know, earth, air, fire and water.

Thing is earthen, obviously, and Storm is fire. Then they could make the "Invisible Girl" power more like an air-transformation ability -- she sort of disappears in a pffft of vapor.

And make the stretchy boring dude more like he's made of flowing water, rather than just Rubber Man. Which is yawns-ville.

It'd be cooler than, well, the Fantastic Four.

Which is not cool.

Posted by: Phinn at January 28, 2015 12:38 PM (DLUnW)

586 So the intended target audience for a Ghostbuster movies is white males from about 13-45. Thus, Hollywood chooses 3 unattractive woman and one mildly attractive woman for a the reboot. Morons.

If you wanted a successful Ghostbusters remake, cast Kate Upton, Brooklyn Decker, Megan Fox and (younger attractive black actress- I'm drawing a blank).

Posted by: Matt in Tampa at January 28, 2015 04:09 PM (vDEpI)

587 I am getting tired of all these remakes inserting the token black actor into every movie. There is no way I would pay to see either of these movies .I think the majority of the country is the same way . Hollywood tries to feed us this PC Bull Excrement and wonders why no one wants to pay to see it .

Posted by: CT Resident at January 28, 2015 11:07 PM (EdH9U)

588 Harrison Ford is the only possible Indiana Jones. And dear God I don't want to see what the hell that they're going to do to Ghostbusters. Replace Bill Murray? Are they insane. I'm a female and I suspect that this is going to stink like a 2 month old dead hobo.
