After the Snowstorm That Could Destroy New York Drops Less Than a Foot on the City, Weathermen and Politicians Apologize For -- or Defend -- Their Climate Alarmism

You know why they do this, right?

Apart from Global Warming, I mean. Though that's a big part of it.

It also goes to the media's calculated 2005 decision to turn a hurricane for which the local Democratic Mayor and the local Democratic Governor had all responsibility into George W. Bush's Weather Watergate.

Now, of course the media only did that Because Bush. They're not going to apply the same absurd rules to other people.

But other politicians can't be sure. After all, the media is 1 corrupt 2 stupid 3 immature 4 borderline insane; who knows the next time the media will claim All of This Weather Is YOUR FAULT?!

So, now it's accepted that government officials will essentially declare Martial Law on a whim. Martial Law has become mainstreamed, thanks to our viciously incompetent media.

After being a promised a blizzard of historic and catastrophic proportions on Monday, New York City residents woke up today to rather meager snow totals and a lot of questions for their public officials.

...

In the media capital of the world, however, the howls are loud after predictions of [snowfall in NYC specifically of] 30 inches or more fizzled into somewhere closer to five or six. Meteorologists are even apologizing for their somewhat overblown predictions.

The focus, in particular, seems to be about the decision to shut down New York City at 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night. All roads in the region (not just in the city, but in Connecticut and New Jersey, as well) were closed to non-emergency traffic, but Governor Andrew Cuomo also made the unprecedented decision to preemptively shut down the entire NYC subway system. That's never happened in the 100-plus years of the subways due to snow.

Yet, by 11:00 p.m., it was already becoming clear that such a move was likely going to be unnecessary. That confusion quickly turned to outrage after a report by The Brooklyn Paper that the subway was actually still running. In order to keep the power on and the tracks clear, the MTA continued to shuttle empty trains all throughout the system and was planning to all along. It was apparently Cuomo's decision to shut the system to passengers, a move that caught MTA off guard and appeared to be unnecessary.

Naturally, some people are upset about the overreaction. It's one thing to clear the streets of cars, but the subway is the lifeline of the city, particularly for those people who work third-shift jobs or have family and friends in other boroughs. Cries of "nanny state"-ism, political posturing, or just plain cowardice are ringing out today.

These high-handed, alarmist, panicky, lawless actions are being defended on grounds of "safety."

This is not an overblown statement: All forms of fascism and totalitarianism proceed under the guise of securing the public's "safety and security." I don't think you can cite a single time where fascism did not ride upon twin horses named Public Safety and Public Security.

We seem to becoming jaded by frequent assertions of dictatorial power for this claimed emergency or that imagined crisis.

And let us be clear about things: Cuomo did not do this to "protect the public safety." He did this to protect his own political safety.

Let us stop pretending to believe the most ridiculous lies of politicians. Let us start dealing forthrightly with one another.

Cuomo thought he should and could do this to spare him a potential three to five point drop in the polls. We should tell him that covering his soft political ass is not a mighty enough justification to start ordering American Citizens about as if they were conscripts in a third world army.

Meanwhile, weathermen, who are to Science what drummers are to rock bands, shriek a lot about every snowstorm and blizzard because these are the few times each year that women pay them any sort of attention.

Though some are of course still claiming they were So Right to be So Wrong.

However, Uccellini stressed erring on the side of caution and planning for the worst was "the right decision" given the potential for "extraordinary" snow totals.

You know, it probably just sounds like smart-alec sophomorism to claim that weather dweebs overstate the danger of bad weather in order to draw attention to themselves.

It may sound that way, but it's true.

People are strongly motivated, often unconsciously, sometimes quite consciously, by simple personal interest. All persons wish to acquire social capital. All people want to advance up the bricks of the giant social pyramid.

It may sound stupid to accuse professionals of using their credentials to accrue social capital, but it is actually far more stupid than to claim the opposite -- that a "professional," by virtue of his tinpot license, has somehow been elevated above and beyond human behavioral imperatives and can so now be trusted to act entirely without the taint of self interest, much like Angels or God.

All of these people "talk their own book" and only a fool credits them otherwise.

40 Now, I have no experience with Northeastern weathermen. The closest I got was my one vacation to NYC when everyone was apologizing for the 80F "heat wave" they were experiencing. In June.

That said, I do have experience with TX weathermen (and, increasingly, weatherchicks). I have never seen one advocating shutting down a city preemptively. Given the nature of tornadoes, they are usually pretty quick to say "hey, get out of the rain," but that really is just "erring on the side of caution."

So, for the weathermen, I'm prepared to give them a pass.

Not in the south, as far as I can see. Even when the weather is bad they just 'suggest' that you stay off the roads if you can. Even when they evacuate for a hurricane there are still tons of people who stick around.

To be fair, it's pretty hard to dictate anything for tornados, since you never know where they will hit. The weathermen are very forceful about saying 'if you are in such and such area seek shelter NOW' but that's just good sense.

One time, a tornado was passing over the local weather guys neighborhood and he was like 'honey, take the kids and get in the bathroom'. Heh.

96 Stu Saroca (or however you spell his name) was the best weatherman ever. He was absolutely stoned during many of his forecasts and it was obvious. He was great.

I remember the blizzard that hit New England back 1978. Idiots were out driving and got stuck all over the place. Cops spent days rescuing them from their cars.

I'm ok with repealing the driving bans if we make a rule that says if you get stuck driving in a blinding snowstorm you're on your own. Dumb people should be responsible for their own stupidity.

145 "It also goes to the media's calculated 2005 decision to turn a hurricane for which the local Democratic Mayor and the local Democratic Governor had all responsibility into George W. Bush's Weather Watergate."

Bush helped 'em do it. Right down the line.

Bush and his media people had him photographed gazing pensively out the window of Air Force One in flight at the devastation below. Straight out of the Poppy Bush playbook. ("Message: I care.")

The instant I saw that, I facepalmed, and said, to be captioned by the media as Arrogant Distant Out Of Touch Incompetent Leader Afraid To Descend To Ground To Witness Results Of His Abject Failures. Sure enough, precisely what the media did with it.

Then when it became clear that there were a hell of a lot of people left in what remained of New Orleans, and that there was a giant humanitarian relief problem developing, what did Bush then do?

He could have pointed out repeatedly that it was the job of the Mayor and Governor to have gotten those people out in advance, under a longstanding pre-agreed plan between the feds, the state, the parishes, and the city.

Bush might further have put it on the record that the Mayor and Governor had been given entirely adequate advance warning to accomplish their preassigned goals under said plan. And that they had screwed the pooch.

Instead, Bush busied himself with handing a birthday cake to Juan McShitstain on the airport tarmac in front of all of the television cameras. (GREAT optics there. Just awesome.)

And being vocally congratulatory about how well FEMA was handling things, even though FEMA was visibly behind the curve. ("Heckuva job, Brownie.")

153 What has happened in the past few years with local news and weather people is ridiculous. I live in Michigan. You get snowstorms, and you thunderstorms. They're normal.

We get a snowstorm here, and those idiot local stations cancel an hour of afternoon programming to cover it. It's the dumbest thing you ever saw. It reminds me of the SNL sketch where Buckwheat gets killed, and the newspeople are over covering it by repeating the same things, playing the same clip over and over, and trying desperately to think of ways to fill up time. They're stupid, self important people trying to suck everything they can get from a "story".

The schools around here, fortunately, are smarter. They don't close schools hours before the storm hits. If we're already getting pounded at 10 o'clock at night, they might cancel school for the next day. But when a storm is PREDICTED they wait until 4 or 5 in the morning, look at what is actually happening, and make their decision based on the real thing.

The mayor of NYC needs to stop stomping all over people's rights and put his effort into running his city better.

What makes you think if Bush had presented a written plan that had been signed off on by the governor of LA and the mayor of Chocolate City showing that they had full responsibility the msm wouldn't have blamed Bush anyway? It's what they do. They blame Republicans no matter what the facts are.

Obama goes to Texas in the middle of a human disaster that he helped create along the border and refuses to visit the border and the msm yawns.

Blame De Blasio and Cuomo and Christie for the Blizzard Snow Job

As we waited for the storm deemed "historic," the only real history was made when the subway shut down for the first time ever in preparation for snow. The real insult came when it was reported later that the trains were indeed still running, empty, as trains needed to keep moving to clear the tracks. Citibike was shut down. Cars were banned from the roads and anyone who didn't take heed risked being fined.

These are all symptoms of our infantilizing "do something!" culture.

Exactly. The thing to do would be to announce a travel advisory, and urge people to stay home unless absolutely necessary. Explain that the advisory would be upgraded to a ban if conditions warranted, and that people who were traveling would risk being unable to return home for the duration of the ban.

That's not so complicated. It would have kept all but the most stupid and careless people at home.

But threatening people with arrest for leaving their home is effin' bullshit. It's no different than the lockdown after the Boston bombing.

Their models are pretty good up to 96 hours. They predicted that a snow storm would hit the North East and it did. They predicted that snow would be pretty deep in places and it was in Boston. New Yorkers are some of the most provincial people on the planet. If it didn't happen within a few miles of them, they ignore it. Most other people on earth stopped thinking that way once bicycles, trains and telegraphs were invented.

A caveat. Just because weather prediction models are good for 96 hours does not mean that climate prediction models are good at predicting a decade in the future, especially when they are fed historical data and can't predict yesterday's climate.

244 Back in the 70s in MN we had a 4WD pickup with a plow. I remember driving on empty streets to go out to plow driveways. One reason the streets were empty is everybody understood 1970s rear wheel drive cars sucked in the snow and took it upon themselves to say home until the streets were cleared. What I don't remember is breathless news casts about snowstorms beyond "yeah guys the roads are gonna suck for the next couple days". And never heard of any governmental shutting down of city streets and highways.

250 My favorite Snow Day recollection:

Back In The Day in Philadelphia we had a daily kids show called "Captain Noah" - the weather forecast was given by Barry the Barometer, a talking barometer.

One day all the news channels collectively FREAKED OUT about the impending weather DOOM. Barry calmly informed the kids that there'd be some snow, but not enough to worry about.

Barry the Barometer was right.

Since then I place my weather trust in anthropomorphic meteorological devices.

253 I'd like to be able to put to the test some "Travel Ban" put out by a Mayor or Governor.

I think they have to declare an emergency/martial law to make those commands legal.

And even then there (as for an emergency) is a limit on what they can force anyone to do.

They may be able to close highways by blocking them but I don't think the cops can legally arrest you. (yeah of course they can come up with some infraction)

It's a very gray area that hasn't had too much litigation. Mostly because most executives are smart enough not to make stupid commands of the population.

But then Andrew got elected. He's looking more and more like a thug. And I'm reminded of Tony Soprano whenever I see Christie these days. He's looking crookeder as he gets thinner.

263 In Ohio there are snow emergency levels. Pretty much 1 2 and 3. Now I think at 3 you can actually start getting into trouble for being out on the roads since you're risking your safety and that of anyone that is going to have to go out to save your ass. And 2 might be a case of saying you shouldn't be out on the road for nonessential reasons. I think depending on conditions 6 inches of snowfall is going to be right around a level 1 maybe 2. But those aren't getting called before even a single flake has started to fall.

Posted by: Buzzion at January 27, 2015 05:07 PM (z/Ubi)

264 Exactly. The thing to do would be to announce a travel advisory, and urge people to stay home unless absolutely necessary. Explain that the advisory would be upgraded to a ban if conditions warranted, and that people who were traveling would risk being unable to return home for the duration of the ban.

Back in the 80s, I was "privileged" to be in the Christmas blizzard in Denver. They announced on the radio (& TV & in the newspapers) that anyone who went out in the snow & got their damned car stuck would be ticketed & towed to an impound lot. Don't get stuck? Nobody cares. Plenty of people learned a lesson that year, though I'm sure around 47% of them immediately forgot that lesson.

Well of course. But that has nothing to do with adding 30 inches of snow and high winds. The reason they do the driving and parking bans is because it is next to impossible to clean the streets in a big city with cars and people all over the road. Living in Texas that might now seem like a big deal to you but trust me it is for people who live and work in those cities.

Some of the stuff deBlasio and Cuomo were doing was dumb but thats because they are dumbasses who are more concerned with their image than actually doing anything useful. But I don't have a problem with a driving ban when they are trying to get the streets in usable condition.

Do they close the roads in Oklahoma or other tornado areas after a tornado tears up the road or do people just drive over the shit?

People clear the roads themselves, in order to get to where they need to go...to, you know, check on others or get injured people to hospitals.

Within hours, you hear chainsaws running and see people using their trucks to pull trees off the roads.
There's a reason why so many people have pickups and utility vehicles here.

We blow off most tornados but we had a huge one last year (?) in Vilonia, Mayflower and a few other places (it was on the ground for30sih miles?)- It was a 'high 4' and the first time I've ever seen our local news have a press conference for a tornado rating. There was nothing on the news for a week or two. Tornado's are amazing and furious and scary, all at the same time.

Fascinating stuff to watch if you're a weather geek, but I watched my wife's eyes glaze over in disinterest when I pointed out system 'A' over western PA and system 'B' off the coast. I pointed out to her how the sun was losing intensity and in the higher elevations of the state they were now getting increasing snowfall and system 'B' was moving ashore. All she cared about was how much snow we would get overnight. Told her I had not a clue.

Closing the roads after a tornado is pretty well the opposite of closing the roads *before* a snow storm.

I mean, I shouldn't even have to say that. That may be the most obtuse comparison I've seen on the HQ- and that's saying something.

No one would have complained if they had gotten 30" of snow, and then said, "Yeah... city's closed. Moose outside should have told you."

Nothing about that story makes sense. The avalanche forecast warned of the exact scenario that they skied right in to, and they weren't using any of their safety equipment. Also, from what I understand, that entire section off the parking area was terribly risky, so why put a parking lot there?

And the *decision* to close the roads occurred well before that, yes? Especially the decision to close the subway was made before it was actually necessary (since, as it turned out, it was never necessary).

There is so much daylight between "closing a road *after* a tornado" and "closing a rode before (or even during) a snowstorm" that I'm not sure how you got there, except that you're trying to be obtuse.

The decision should never have been made. The roads in NYC should never have been closed. Certainly the subway should not have been. Trying to liken them in any way to the way in which OK or TX handles tornadoes is... silly.

Second, to have an America that means something, that means what it did most of its history, one ingredient cannot be missing: Americans. Not birth or naturalization documents - mindset.

See much of that mindset any more? Sure, it's abundant in certain regions, and among certain self-selected sub-groups (military, others). But generally? Does it "inform" pop culture, media, education ...... OK I'll stop. Obviously quite the contrary.

Americans - as historically and meaningfully defined - would not put up with much of what we now see, suffer, and decry daily. And it's going to get worse, and there is nothing you can do about it. See elections, mid-term, 2nd greatest blowout in US history, and their likely import. Not much.

400 >>The decision should never have been made. The roads in NYC should never have been closed. Certainly the subway should not have been. Trying to liken them in any way to the way in which OK or TX handles tornadoes is... silly.

Of course they overreacted. Nobody has said they didn't. But putting bans on cars in major northern cities after a storm, which is what I have been talking about, to assist in the clean up is and has been SOP for decades. You can think its silly but until you haven't lived through it I don't think you have a very good perspective of what a mess it is.

Stay aware of the weather. And, yes, that even means at night. If one hears thunder at night during tornado season, turn on the tv and get some weather updates. If you feel your in the path, gather your survival kit together, grab whoever (including pets) you wish to bring, get in your car and travel at right angles to the direction of the approaching storm.

But it does take awareness, and a little bit of weather knowledge.

409 Its right there in the Communist Manifesto that the government control transportation.
Growing up in NYC we NEVER shutdown transit. Ever. It was a matter of pride. You never let mother nature beat you. Now these nouveau fascists are trying to condition us to be helpless and submissive.

Buzzion and MTF, you guys just have to get smarter about how our system of govt. works. When one party has both houses, and other party has the WH, and is pursuing unconstitutional, wildly unpopular and destructive policies, Congress has no options and must just go along.

Any attempt to exercise the primary congressional power of appropriations is now doomed to failure. The executive merely needs to "shut down the government" and the congressional opposition must fold or suffer irreversible political damage. Well - if the president happens to be a failed, unpopular, weak, lame-duck president, and a Democrat. These conditions render him essentially all-powerful.

Back in my day, we had to walk to school, uphill, both ways.

No seriously, I lived in the exurbs north of Phila. from about 1978-1988 as a tween and teen, and remember lots of big snow. We were late for school, a lot, because we had to shovel prodigious quantities of snow (and the school knew it, so started late) since the town would fine you if you didn't have your sidewalk shoveled in 24 hours - and since the snowplow pushed hard, frozen snow boulders into the foot of everyone's driveway. And back in my day, kids were their parents' free labor, not pampered special snowflakes. We shoveled our own drives and walks, then our parents sent us over to all the old people's houses to shovel for them too (and we weren't allowed to accept anymoney from them either).
And just to cap off the "get off my lawn" story, I remember when the northeast WAS actually cold, and you could ice skate on the Delaware Canal from Washington Crossing to points north, if you had a mind to (I never made it farther than New Hope, about 5 miles... yeah, me and Hans Brinker...).These losers kvetching over even 2 feet of snow are a bunch of f*^king pansies. Try the winter of 1981 or thereaboutson for size, pussies.

THAT was the mark of adult versus kid back then....

414 When I lived in Milwaukee they'd put plow blades on garbage trucks and send 'em out when the plow force wasn't big enough.
Posted by: HR, staring sadly at the grass

The new thing this year in Columbus was that the garbage truck drivers were cross-trained to drive the snow plows. So now, when you see them parked at McDonalds, there are two guys in the cab sleeping.

I lived in Cleveland for a while, and if you got up to 15 inches in a night, it would usually take about a day of plowing to get back to normal. Things would be moving the next morning, but a lot of roads would not be plowed yet.
If you had a long driveway, you also usually hired a guy to plow it before sunup, so that you could get your car out of the garage. Out east in the snowbelt, they will get huge amounts of snow some days (30-40 inches). It is sometime awesomfully beautiful.

@414

We got some ridiculous snow and ice in N. Dallas last year, and the whole time, I only saw one guy from the city out. He had a half-assedUTV- sized blade mounted (crooked, no less) on a garbage truck - and he didn't even have it down.

So thankful I picked Grandpa's pick-up mounted snowplow out of all of his boy toys back when I got my pick from the estate.

419 Time to rewrite Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" -

This time the spectral evidence is real, but can only be seen by the witches; and, the witches are real; but this time they are in CHARGE.

For the allegory, the witches are real communists, but that was true in the original, they were just whining then because everybody could see through their illusions.
