5 Good Morning Morons. Today is Tuesday, January 27, 2015. On this day in 1880 Thomas Edison received the patent on the incandescent lamp, the first light bulb. We began getting rid of them in 2014 in one of the most stupid moves ever.

76 Okay. Bitch session. Sorry Horde. Feel free to scroll past this.

So. One of my jobs is keeping track of and reserving the law enforcement vehicles for our gun carriers. Policy dictates (and I know this because I fucking wrote the policy) that I have 24 hours to respond to a request. (Or eight business hours.)

Thursday, at 7pm (I'd already gone home for the day), a request came in. Friday (my day off) at about 4pm, I answered the request and made the reservation.

Yesterday, I received an email asking why it took me more than 24 hours to respond to the request. I forwarded the original request as well as my reply and noted the times.

I received an additional response: "I understood it was technically less than 24 hours, but you were not timely. Please set up a meeting with me when I get in on Tuesday (Monday is her day off) to discuss your failure to respond in a timely fashion to requests."

Then this happened:

When we last saw our douchetrepid boss, she was yelling at me for not hitting a metric that I very clearly hit (and on my day off, no less). This morning, there was a follow-up conversation wherein I re-established the fact that I hit her previously-agreed-upon metrics:

Boss: Nearsider, I'm just not happy with how long it took you to respond to XXXXs request.

Me: I understand. I know XXXX's (our Presidential Merit Fellow) always been given special treatment in an off-the-record kind of way. If you'd like to re-visit our established time-frames, I'd be happy to go over that with you so that we don't run into this in the future.

Boss: Well, no. You didn't hit the metrics as it is. Just make sure you're answering people on time from now on.

Me: Boss, you first said that I only had 24 hours to respond. I pointed out that I hit that metric. Then you told me I also only had 8 business hours, whichever is less. I pointed out that I hit that metric as well, even though I was on leave. The request came in at 7pm and I had addressed it by around 3pm the following day. That's well within the established limits.

Boss: Agree to disagree.

Me: No, Boss. Not 'agree to disagree.' This isn't opinion. It's empirical. These numbers aren't open to interpretation. It's not opinion. It's math. It's like the full moon or the changing of the tides, it just IS. I hit your metrics. You're still unhappy about how long it took, and that's okay. I understand, and I'm happy to re-write the limits to account for this incident. What I'm not willing to do is let my performance evaluation be negatively impacted because one special snowflake called you at home, at 10pm, because no one had answered his three-hour-old request yet.

Boss: We'll discuss this later.

I'm in so much trouble.

Subways are running but limited/weekend service. And I'm sure the elevated lines are probably not running, but who knows? The amount of snow is not so much that the lines cannot be cleared.

I had. All I see is "suspended." Hell, no complaints over a snow day I guess--but this really wasn't that bad. I'd figure there'd at least be an update on when everything will be up and running again.

was chewed out by her side of the operation for having the orders to give....

(why are you wasting limited office space keeping copies?)

was then told by the E-7 generating the drama...no no policy I just thought it'd be a good idea never mind....

and came home ready to crap out her liver from rage that no phase of the operations at this base follows ANY flowchart or chain of command....

retirement is looking REAL good.

Not quite a foot of snow here but some awesome drifts of about 5 - 6 feet.

Around 40 mph winds, and steady. For about 10 hours now.

I've been shoveling about a foot high of snow along the dog path every hour because Corgis are low riders. Also so I can open the door.

The real snow accumulation is just getting started here. And the wind should be picking up a bit. Supposed to have this shit for the rest of today.

They stick out. No dice. Then I mentioned that we round our financial statements to the nearest million dollars. Still no dice. Mr. executive CFO got his "exact estimate."

It will, in the near or the long term. My full-time job has pretty much become 'find something else.' I'm looking in and out of the government, in and out of the DC Metro region. I've applied for jobs in Nebraska and Alaska (well within my skill-set). Over the past 18 months, I've had two interviews. It's tough.

But.

I can pay my mortgage, my wife and newborn son are healthy and fed, my dog loves me and I've got you fuckers.

162 I got into an argument with some people who love science sexually. I groused that so far the weather forecasting this winter has sucked eggs and opened school districts in my area to a lot of (imo unwarranted) criticism.

So I said that if weather forecasters are making decisions upon which other people rely, they should be held financially liable if those predictions don't pan out. I got attacked by people saying that it's an inexact science, that it's SCIENCE after all and forces we don't fully understand can impact predictions, that scientists do the best they can but are often wrong and we don't want to punish failure, etc etc.

I made two points. First that if we had negative consequences for crappy forecasts then we wouldn't have crappy forecasts (and particularly we wouldn't get a buttload of hype over storms as we're seeing these days). Second is that if the scientists are often wrong and this is an inexact science, why the hell are we listening to them vis a vis global warming...?

They called me an asshole. I guess I won.

196 WN, sorry to hear about your workplace troubles....

It sucks, but if the cards are dealt as you say they are, it may be wiser to just say "Yeah, OK I'll respond faster." Career bureaucrats (and I speak as a former member of that tribe) have a very particular flow chart when it comes to thinking. You were right, no question, but your boss was in a different part of the flow chart and expected a different answer. I'm preaching to the choir but boss management is an unfortunately required skill in the bureaucracy.

It sucks...but we're here for you when you need to vent. Keep trying to placate your boss while you look elsewhere. If your bosses really want you gone, they'll give you good references...that's how the bureaucracy works too...

So in the morning when the forecasters said the snow would be in full swing, the schools didn't close and the roads didn't get aggressively treated. But the forecasters were off in their timing and snow a couple of hours later and everything went FUBAR. The schools got a lot of heat for not closing...but they relied on a CYA forecast from some doofus "scientist" who wasn't criticized much if at all.

228 I've got lots of stories about working in the Patent and Trademark Office.

One quarter of all federal firings are in an agency with about ~ 6,500 examiners out of 10,000 total.

Every hour you are there counts against you on a production pipeline. You have to clear enough countable results per time spent on the job to be successful. Every two weeks your work production is looked at by management.

Management is also examined for how well their workers do.

One boss, a widowed parent, worked up to he collapsed at his desk. He was taken in a gurney to his deathbed.

It's the only place I'd ever seen where you take personal leave and go to work, to boost your production numbers.

232 The LIVs only accept news from objective sources like CNN and NBC and ABC, CBS, etc.

Not even then. ABC or CBS (what difference does it make?) had an anchor ask if Obama was still operating in reality after the SOTU.

Zero impact.

PTO's been in the news a lot lately. Dozens of examiners were literally doing nothing and billing 80 hours per pay period. Management was pencil whipping reports et al.

Very bad juju.

235 "The weather people around here have started using multiple models "

"modeling" = cheaper than observation.

*dons boring history cap* - by the 90s, real time standardized data from Russia/former USSR states began to dry up, and the US (various agencies) decided that the "science was settled", ergo - don't replace existing weather stations and satellite data sources.
It's amazing, really - how much "weather" info across much of North America is "guesswork" today...

But hey, code = SCIENCE!!!!11!!!!!

It's the Obama management. Or because it's actually in the Constitution and gives property rights to inventors and corporations. Can't have that.

239 So the whole state of NY shuts down for what was supposed to be a severe but not really that unusual snow storm? LOL!

I imagine de Blasio and the local media will be congratulating their cowering-in-place today with some self-congratulatory BS like #NYStrong

244 I am in Staten Island and we got about 5-6" a little hard to measure because it is blowing around. My puppy loves it though. My employer announced they were going to be closed today and the schools are closed so the elder Penfold spawn can shovel a bit of snow and the younger spawnette can tease him while he does it to ensure maximum rage from Mrs. Penfold.

Given that it took me two hours to get home last night with almost no snow on the ground, and 90% of the drivers in NYC with no driving skills in poor weather conditions (4 years of Wisconsin driving in a front wheel drive car is an excellent teacher), it is safer to be at home because the dumb ass in the Escalade has no concept of things like inertia, mass and velocity and earnestly believes her/his Escalade is now the sportscar.

245 Update on prayer request for best friend Mike. Stroke was on left side of brain in the carotid artery. The blockage resulted in hemmoraging as well. His entire right side is affected. Brain loss according to neurologist is "significant". He is blind in his right eye as well and still suffering from blurred vision in his left eye. All of the result of mistreated atrial fibrillation by the VA. He did recognize us and squeezed hand when prompted. A long, long rehab will be required and outcome is totally unknown. Thanks again for the prayers. Back to lurk mode know.

246 We all watch this crap with our hands tied behind our backs?

President Obama's 2012 campaign field director has been selected to be a part of a "five-man Obama team" that will run a campaign against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

As Caroline Glick--Israeli journalist and Shillman Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center--notes, the far-left Israeli news outlet "for whatever reason... chose not to translate this article in its English edition." Fortunately, Independent Media Review and Analysis did:

Foreign Funding Bankrolls Anti-Netanyahu Campaign -- Flies in 5-Man Obama Team
Dr. Aaron Lerner Date: 26 January 2015

Haaretz reporter Roi Arad revealed in an article in the Hebrew edition today that the foreign funded organization, "One Voice", is bankrolling the V-2015 campaign to defeat Binyamin Netanyahu's national camp in the March 2015 Knesset Elections.

One indication of the generous financing is that it has now flown in a team of five American campaign experts (including Jeremy Bird, the Obama campaign's national field director) who will run the campaign out of offices taking up the ground floor of a Tel Aviv office building.

V-2015 is careful not to support a specific party - rather "just not Bibi". As such, the foreign funds pouring into the campaign are not subject to Israel's campaign finance laws.

Would someone care to explain to me how a punk band of outspoken skinheads has somehow become respectable enough to be considered mainstream?

I'd prefer that our politicians not be associated with Dropkick Murphy. The various Leftists will happily sacrifice their fellow-travelers in the band to smear our candidates as racist.
