About 30% earned under $100,000 a year. There are about 12 million 529 accounts in total, according to the College Savings Plan Network, an industry group, while the average balance in a 529 account is about $21,000--enough to cover almost two years average tuition, room and board--minus aid--at a public four-year university. Ryan Ellis, tax policy director for the conservative think tank Americans for Tax Reform, said the proposal violates an Obama campaign pledge to not raise taxes on middle-income Americans. "This idea that this is an account for the preserve of the Huxtables out there that make $250,000 a year is kind of ridiculous," Mr. Ellis said. Many owners of 529 plans are young parents who take pride in saving money in advance for their children’s college education, he said. "You've made them look like chumps for saving whatever they’ve saved so far."

If they run short of money from traditional sources, they'll look for new revenue wherever they can find it. Where do we go to get that apology from the media?

The poor can get Pell Grants, and need-based scholarships making it easier to afford college. The real rich don't need financial aid (they may still get some from scholarships and such, but they don't strictly *need* it).
But the "Middle Class" generally make too much money for Pell Grants and need-based scholarships, and mom & dad can't directly afford college. Thus 529 plans and student loans.
But this goes beyond that. If you're going to tax money I specifically set aside, what you're tell me is never to set aside money. The Horde is smart enough that our Akbar Meters all bury the needle, but many people will simply see the disincentive to save, and stop saving.
If they're going to go after 529s, what assurance do we have that they *won't* go after IRAs, 401(k)s and such?

The Fed Res Banks interest rates the past few years have created a situation when Inflation is greater than the interest you can gain from saving... thus saving becomes a bad, vice good, thing personally.
This is just the next step in punishing those who would save...

Because my husband was priced straight out of his insurance when they changed my policy at work to be ACA compliant. We don't qualify for health sharing programs, and since he's self employed, his salary fluctuates not to mention that we wouldn't accept subsidies anyway because we refuse to make others pay for our insurance.
I can't wait to see the whooping on our taxes from the penalty. Thanks Obama, Democrats, John Roberts and every simpleton that voted for these cockholsters.

From a quick google, looks like the 529 savings accounts peg back to the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 with it's infamous sunset provisions.
Renewed for another couple years in 2010, if you remember that Republican fold on higher tax rates on the upper tier to get the renewal.
So, if the clock is ticking on another expiration, Obama may be able to play chicken with the GOP to get specific tax increases in exchange for another renewal so the GOP can "save" the act as a whole and govern and infrastructure and so on.

The government can borrow for a while, but eventually they have to get that money from somewhere.
With roughly 100M tax payers, that means to keep up the current level of spending the government is going to have to take $5-10k more PER TAXPAYER per year just to pay for the current spending.
That does not include paying off the Obama-debt, the increased interest on the Obama-debt, or additional hand outs Obama wants to give to his political allies.

You would be taxed on the entire value of the home since you didn't buy it. For example if you buy a house for $65K and sell it for $85K you are taxed on $20K capital gains.

The reason college is so expensive is that the government pays so much of the bill (and then taking the money from the taxpayers of course).
So to correct this mandate that no college can get any financial aide if they charge more then $X a year.
Then make that number go down by a fixed percentage every year until you get to something reasonable.
Some colleges will refuse and have to dip into their endowments, some will go under, but most will find a way.
It would mean fewer student centers, college curling teams, and women's studies programs but oh well...
Oh and also require colleges to report the percentage of their students employed full time per major 5 years out...

According to WSJ, there would be a $500K exemption on inherited homes for a couple and $250K for single tax filers. Which are the same limits today for selling a home and not paying capital gains taxes up to $250K/$500K.

Not when you inherit, when you sell. Right now, when you inherit a home, that home will be deemed to have the fair market value at date of death. Think of that as being the price you paid for the house. When you sell the house, you will pay capital gains (presuming no roll over) on the difference between the step up value and the sale price.
The new proposal is that the capital gains will be based on the difference in your grandparent's purchase price and the sale price. As you can imagine, this is going to be an immense difference. Think of all the people who bought in areas that are now built up. Nana and Grandpa don't have much. But they have that house they bought for $20,000 that's now worth $875,000. So right now, when they pass and you sell for $950,000, you are taxed on the difference from $875,000. The change will be to make it on the $20,000.
Yeah, this change is very very personal for the vast majority of Americans indeed.
Oh hey just realized this is an awesomesauce way to trash the real estate market again. Woot woot.

As I predicted a few weeks ago, Obama's approvals have gone up steadily as the price of gas has gone down.
Gee whiz, Wally, it's almost as though incumbent approvals and pump prices are inversely correlated or sumpin'.
This of course brings up bitter memories of how the Mittbot did not run even one single gas price attack ad in 2012. Despite the fastest rise in history of gas prices during Obama's first term, at a time when people's take-home incomes with which to buy gas were falling: double whammy.

Bullshit. The msm ran a daily bash on Bush with "Grim Milestones" and everything. It wore his support to the bone. More US military died in Afghanistan under Obama than Bush yet hardly anybody knows that. Gas prices were consistently lower under Bush and economy as a whole was much better. So why wasn't Bush the recipient of higher poll numbers?
It is ridiculous to pretend the msm isn't carrying water for Obama and that it isn't having an enormous impact on his public perception. They wouldn't be doing it if it weren't.

The 529 tax break has supposedly resulted in billions of dollars "lost" to the government. Of course, liberals never stop to think that what this break really did is create a very strong incentive for families to save for college that otherwise wouldn't. A lot of these 529s are prepaid tuition plans that guarantee the student full tuition at any state university. That's the biggest reason people buy them - not to save on taxes. The explosion of 529s has followed the explosion of college costs. Younger families have gotten smarter, states and investments firms are marketing these plans, and it's just easier to trick yourself into saving money if you are writing that check every month to the college fund and you know you can't take the money out without a penalty.
I can say for certain that I would not have a dime saved for my kids' college without the 529. I have always sucked at saving money, and have been unemployed fairly often during my kids' lives. I sucked it up and wrote a check for $800 a moth for 5 years for my two kids. The tax break on the 529 really didn't mean that much to me financially, but the tax PENALTY for withdrawing the money sure did!
I honestly don't think the proposal is a direct ideological attack on middle class savers. It is a clear expression of liberal ideology when it comes to tax incentives. They want money to pay for free college, where else better to get it than recovering all that "lost government money" from college savings plans, most of which they think goes to well-off people who don't need it? It beats trying to raise tax rates or kill another program to pay for it.

I was discussing this IRA/401k- Social Security issue with an investment adviser a few weeks ago. He said many in his field think the govt may also force quicker withdrawals periods from those accounts one your reach a certain age. That would force the money into a higher tax bracket so the govt would get a bigger cut without ever formally raising taxes. I think the idea ultimately is to make it so that no one can afford to send their kid to college, and then the State, rather than the individual, decides who goes. Then the State can award college places to loyal members of the Young Pioneers, and the children of the nomenklatura, and keep out the offspring of counter-revolutionary elements.

Medicare paid about $362 billion to care providers in 2014, the health department said in a statement, making it the biggest buyer of health care services in the U.S. Paying separately for each procedure, called “fee-for-service,” has long been viewed as an inefficient driver of U.S. health spending, which at more than 17 percent of gross domestic product is the highest in the world.

Almost every tinpot, leftwing dictator makes damn sure gas is cheap by heavily subsidizing it. It's a proven people pleaser.
I tend to think it can go up and quick as it went down, but if gas stays super cheap, Obama will probably remain popular enough. If gas goes back to averaging around $3 a gallon, Obama will be in the low 40 to high 30s.
Regardless, Obama's policies are not popular despite what the MSM pushes. The Democrats would not have gotten so soundly beaten in 2014 if that was the case.

Fast forward a few years.
The socialist geniuses hadn't bothered to build time of day gating into the grid contribution pricing. And didn't have onsite inspections.
So, sleazy operators were building the cheapest "solar plants" they could with just a few panels, and were running diesel generators on site 24 hours per day to pump power to the grid, arbitraging the considerable delta between the cost of running the diesels (cheap) and the payback from transmitting "solar power" onto the grid (lucrative).

Yeah, that's the problem. "Perfection" in medical care is impossible to define, let alone actually achieve.
Now, the one thing they could do (it would still suck, for reasons I'll get into) would be "diagnosis-based" payment. That is, "We don't care what you *do* for the patient, a broken bone pays X, Renal Cancer pays Y (either lump-sum or per-period)."
Back when I was younger, that made sense to me. Heck, if I didn't know about moral hazard and the Law of Unintended Consequences, it would still make sense to me.
Here are the problems I can come up with (and there are probably more):
1- Doctors will tailor their services to the payment on the diagnosis, not to the specifics of the case.
2- If there are two possible diagnoses, watch them only list the more expensive of the two. For instance, "screening for stomach cancer, symptoms present" will almost certainly pay more than "stomach ulcers." Considering the doctor is going to do many of the same tests in both cases, he's going to bill the screening for stomach cancer.
3- Follow-up appointments will become a thing of the past. You won't be told to "follow up in X days." Instead, you'll be told, "If this doesn't clear up in X days, make a new appointment, and we'll run some more tests." Now that follow-up isn't a follow-up, it's a whole new instance.
Fee for service is the only rational way to pay for anything, including health care. I don't pay less for my burger because the service is bad or it doesn't taste good. I pay the fee, and then resolve never to eat at that restaurant again.

So now hospitals has big incentive to not perform "services" on elderly who might get sick again in a month. And to do less risky surgeries.
Take a hip operation. Older you are, the worse your odds of something bad happening during surgery.
So now the hospital will have a greater incentive to just leave the older person in pain, rather than risk trying to fix them.

Farmers and ranchers have been dealing with this for years, as have business owners. Want to pass your farm that great granddad settled back in 1890? Ha. Inheritance taxes are truly evil.
Farmer Brown has a farm worth today upwards of a $1M, not because he can grow a $1M worth of crops on it, but because in his area, his farm is now encroached on by development and is being valued at it's highest best worth, which is the development price. If he wants to pass it on to his kids, who are farming with him, they will be taxed at the full$1M value. Which is why so many farms are either broken up, because no one can afford the inheritance taxes, or a section is sold off to pay those taxes, which is why you see bizarre little house developments right next to a smaller farmer Brown Jr.
Who now has to deal with the city folk who live next door and bitch about manure smells, cows mooing, tractors and combines running, etc.
Hence, this is why there are organizations that farmers use that buy development rights off the farmer, pay them in cash, and then the farm can never be split. It is also worth much less now, so when it passes to the heirs, the inheritance tax is smaller and hopefully, there is some money set aside from the sale to pay the tax man.
In essence, because we allow government to codify an inheritance tax, we have removed a personal property right, of being able to develop, pass on, etc. a property based on personal preference. We have forced a property owner to make a decision based solely on a financial force.

This is essentially how medicare works now. Patients are segregated by diagnosis. The diagnosis places them in a DRG (diagnosis related group). The hospital is payed a payment based on the DRG. Doesn't matter how few or how many test studies, days of stay, etc hospital gets same dollars. Result is the hospital has to keep the expenditures down on average or they will lose money. In practice, lose on some, make a little on others, hopefully do a little better than break even in the aggregate.

Just had this happen with FIL. Went to ER with severe stomach pain(he has had an aneurysm repaired), and was admitted. Diagnosis inconclusive, either he had a stomach virus or his diverticulitis flaired up. Kept him four days, two days past when he was eating food with no issues, up and dressed and sitting in a chair in room......Which cost Medicare $1500 a day.

It may have changed since I was in Health Insurance, but it used to be that DRGs were only for inpatient care, not for outpatient care.
But DRGs for outpatient care wouldn't be completely insane. The big problem is that they're targeting doctors, as well as hospitals.
Hospitals can make up some money in other areas- mostly people with non-Medicare/Medicaid insurance, and some elective procedures.
Doctors don't have as wide a customer base.

That could have backfired badly. Remember that in order to have them fight bloody battles of attrition, you'd need to *arm* them first. And then you'd need to disarm them before you started liquidating them. That could have caused it's own set of problems.
Besides - the Nazis *knew* that they were going to beat the Soviets anyway. So why did they need extra troops?
The Germans got awfully close to Moscow, which makes for an interesting what if. Taking Moscow might not have ended the war. But apparently the entire Soviet rail net went through the city. Destroying that would have made it very difficult for the Soviets to get supplies moved around the country.

Last night watched the film "Mr. Klein," an excellent French film from the '70s about a non-Jewish Parisian dude who happens to share the same name as a Jewish partisan on the run, and during the Nazi occupation gets caught up in the Nazi deportation of all Jews from Paris, over his futile protestations.
Anyway, the film's set designers, in an attempt to re-create the era, put reproductions of actual Nazi posters on the walls around Paris. One of them made me stop the film, rewind, and inspect it closely.
Illustrated with typical muscular-worker Nazi art style, it said (in French), "Stop Bolshevism! Embrace socialism!" followed by exhortation to join the Nazis.
This confirms what many have pointed out, with an an additional wrinkle:
The Nazis saw themselves as the true socialists, and dismissed Russian-style socialism as "Bolshevism," which according to the Nazis was not the true socialism as practiced by the National Socialists, but instead was some kind of Russian bastardization that was cooked up by Lenin.
Apparently the poster in the film was an actual one from the '40s.
Hard to argue with first-hand contemporaneous evidence.

Actually what I remember were the sweeping cuts to Medicare/Medicaid that were built into Obamacare originally, which were required to have the CBO score it as a net deficit reducer.
Cynics said that those cuts weren't realistic, that hospitals would promptly drop M/M patients if enacted, and that the cuts were merely temporary and cosmetic, the spoonful of sugar to make the Obamacare medicine go down. There was no lock-in of said cuts.
Well, the cynics were right. Again. Obamacare passed, with the sweeping cuts in it, and literally within weeks, Dingy Harry was shoving legislation through the Senate to undo the cuts, and with them, undoing the phantom "deficit savings" from Obamacare.

In fact, after two weeks of massive downpours back in December, the dry pattern has returned, and along with it more predictions that the drought will continue for another year. We really thought that 10" of rain we got was gonna put an end to it -- but not quite yet.
But we still have three more months for a repeat performance. Until then, we'll just enjoy the California sunshine.

I love all that stuff, raw squid, all of it, everything except for sea urchin. Didn't care for that.
The only other thing I've eaten in Asia that I didn't care for was fish belly, which I ate in China. It looked like green liver, and was extremely fishy tasting. I wouldn't drive across town to get either that or sea urchin. Otherwise, it's on.

I've heard it said in the past that most ethnic cuisine is stuff that people started eating because it was the only stuff cheap enough for the poor people to eat. They figured out ways to take the left-over crap that no one in their right mind would eat, and make it edible and tasty so that they could get the stuff down. Then their kids ate it because they liked it and were used to it, and not because it was cheap. And a century later you pay big bucks for it at the local restaurant.

And this is the conundrum. You give the middle class a ton of tax breaks, the middle class ends up not paying taxes. If they don't pay taxes, they don't give a shit if taxes are increased, since they assume it won't affect them.
