69 Just a quick update on my daughter.

If it wasn't for the fact that I saw her go into surgery I would think that she never even had it. Four hours from check in until post op, but they were able to get the tumor out and no issues throughout. Came home the next day once she could start holding food down and been fine since. All she has taken post op is ibuprofen and has has little to no pain. Definitely some swelling but that's about it.

Should have the pathology report on the tumor today or tomorrow but the location, her age and what the tumor looked like after removal has the doctor feeling pretty positive about a benign diagnosis.

Again appreciated all the prayers/thoughts!

I saw the story about a coyote being caught in Manhattan and that reminded me that there was a story a few months (?) ago about a dead baby bear cub being found in Central Park.

I will admit that the idea of bears inhabiting Central Park and then wandering out to the streets of Manhattan makes me happier than it should.

157 I suppose ey'll be able to trace tube drone owenership, but I could be wrong. I know people cannibalize/customize those things, probably not impossible to make one untraceable. Could be nothing, a hobbyist who lost control and had no idea where it landed, or did know and decided discretion was the better part of valor when it came to dealing with the Secret Service. Or it could be a deliberate attempt at a minor offense, paparazzi, prank, dare, that kind of thing. Or it could be very serious, a proof of concept for some future attack. I suppose we'll learn what they want us to know when they want us to know it.

192 That was actually a very, very clever scene and one of the best lines of the show (I don't usually watch as it creeps me out - Mrs. DocJ is all over it, though).

I think the Revelationary Apocalypticism is fun. Absolutely 0 relation to what the Bible actually says, but still fun.

And I'm constantly amazed at how much Crane echoes what political Conservatives have been saying for years. In most cases, anyway.

Koreans make an English language movie from a French comic book.

Really, what could go wrong?

Aside from the parts that totally sucked, there are a few movies out about people trying to fix global warming and instead they plunge the world into a land of ice. Not exactly Fallen Angels, but kinda.

I have seen Snowpiercer and I quite like it but then again it's the kind of thing I like.

There's a plot line so cynical it makes me look like Mary Poppins.

RE: polar bears and OMG LOST WHY DID YOU NOT EAT THE POLAR BEAR OMG YES I AM STILL BITTER SHUT UP.

Ahem.

Well, I think it's hopeful from the predator meet prey standpoint. Also it's a reminder that human beings are not at the top of the food chain, not really.

Thing is I don't know how you can stop it. Unless you totally cover the grounds with nets.

I suppose they could put some transmitter jammers up, but that only works against people who aren't trying to work around the jammers.

200 If terrorists hadn't considered this before, they know it's possible now.

They knew when that dude ditched security and got inside.

It's not a difficult trick. You know where he (supposedly) sleeps. Get a drone with a shaped charge into position and it's Karma from Kabul, baby!

The trick is timing the device to go off. And hoping the physical security won't foul the attempt. And making sure your target is there when the plan needs him to be...

(And I'm pretty sure I'm far from the first to bring this up. Scared yet?)

Now the White House is saying they heard the drone fly in at about 3am and then crashed. They spent several hours looking for it.

So, thing 1, no skyscrapers in DC. Nothing over 130 feet. But, still, they are buildings/

You pose a question about regular Joe - pretty much you have posed something out of the reach of regular Joe. But they make drones you can buy for under a couple thousand that will give you first person video and a range of a couple of kilometers - so you could do it from a building nearby, you probably need LOS from transmitter to the drone.

But you can't really carry much payload. You have to spend a lot more money. Several thousand dollars to get into a payload of a few pounds. And the quad/hex is getting pretty big at this point (say 3 feet across).

Now, if you were dedicated, and had resources, you could probably do a cut rate Raptor but you would get to use it once. So, if Iran wanted to give one to a Jihadi,,,,

But it would have to be a well trained Jihadi, so that takes time and money and then that guy has to be willing to be the dead guy, because it will get tracked to him.

231 HAVANA - The start of talks on repairing 50 years of broken relations appears to have left President Raul Castro's government focused on winning additional concessions without giving in to U.S. demands for greater freedoms, despite the seeming benefits that warmer ties could have for the country's struggling economy.

Following the highest-level open talks in three decades between the two nations, Cuban officials remained firm in rejecting significant reforms pushed by the United States as part of President Barack Obama's surprise move to re-establish ties and rebuild economic relations with the Communist-led country.

"One can't think that in order to improve and normalize relations with the U.S., Cuba has to give up the principles it believes in," Cuba's top diplomat for U.S. affairs, Josefina Vidal, told The Associated Press after the end of the talks. "Changes in Cuba aren't negotiable."

... is it just me, but I would have thought that you get this kind of stuff done BEFORE you make any announcement.

I guess this was to be expected when Administration officials have been talking about an embassy in Tehran. Me sense to me that the Iranians would throw out nearly 4 decades of talk about "The Great Satan" just because America now has a Black President. /snark
