Of course this Thrush idiot is, well, a typical media idiot.
But you know what? I much prefer that Walker, or anyone like him, simply never bring themselves or family into a discussion. Especially when (however true, or pertinent) it concerns them being some sort of target or victim. It's a small, quite element of the class that is 90% missing from public figures today. It's opposite - the preening, bizarre, theatrical arrogance and egotism of a ridiculous unfit figure like Obama - is a significant element of "no class". Remember when, back in the first catastrophic, degrading term of the affirmative action intern and his band of D student Beltway mediocrities, it was leaded that death threats against the president were at record highs? First, I never believed it, for a second (the US having become a Third World or old Soviet-style country where official declarations can be almost routinely dismissed). Second,I know that in fact the craziest period of threats against a president in modern times (that is, advertized plus detected threats) was, unsurprisinly, against Dubya. Easy to believe. The hysteria against Bush (whose symptoms are not unknown among so-called "conservatives"), the final and complete transformation of pop culture and all media into dumbed-down, crude propaganda bullhorns, yielding such gems as the high-profile "entertainment" fiction (forget if play or movie) about an assassination of that president. But it would be as unlikely for Bush to have mentioned such a thing, especially in trumpeting his own cause, as it would be for all the non-existent excess heat of "global warming" to be hiding in the deep oceans. Someone here had the perfect joke the other day. Recall how (an amazingly striking example of how infantilized the Dem party and a major part of thecivic culture had become) some idiot Clinton staff people stole the "W" keys off West Wing computers before leaving? The Bush people, so the joke went, should have stolen the "I" keys. That about sums it up. Minor style issue, perhaps. But it would be nice if someone as classy and accomplished as Walker, a throwback to an America of intelligent public service, were to maintain a very high standard on such things. Posted by: rhomboid at January 24, 2015 07:54 PM (afQnV) Um, short story, the land of Yugos and PPY ammo had a unplanned rapid disassembly that involved genocide and ethnic cleansing and NATO bombing. The Croats wound up with their own concession and decided they wanted to make a 9mm instead of using the older Tokarev or Makarov designs. Using an amalgamation of P-38, Baretta and just a touch of design style from the Makarov, they came up with that long barrel design. The second model has a snub barrel and looks like a space gun, and the third is a full departure which I think is the polymer frame HS2000. The PHP started out all machined, and slowly worked to more cast parts and later polymer frames. The PHP uses the locking block of the P-38 but the op-rod and spring recoil of the Baretta, and a take down lever sort of like the Sig, but also looks a lot like the Walther Volkspistole design externally with the two levers (even though the action is completely different) So, it is basically the French Hotchkiss machine-gun or 1888 Commission rifle of pistols, but I am told it does work quite well. Before his demise, Nisman had filed a 280-page complaint charging that Kirchner had issued an "express directive" to shield a group of Iranian suspects in the 1994 bombing.
Nisman contended that the government had agreed to swap grain for oil with Tehran in exchange for withdrawing "red notices" to Interpol seeking the arrests of the former and current Iranian officials accused in the unsolved case. Since 2006, Argentine courts have demanded the extradition of eight Iranians, including former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, former defense minister Ahmad Vahidi and Iran's former cultural attache in Buenos Aires, Mohsen Rabbani, for the bombing.
But in 2013, Kirchner signed a memorandum of understanding with Tehran agreeing to set up a "truth commission" to investigate the bombing and allowing Argentine prosecutors to question the suspects in Iran. Posted by: ThunderB, ShapeShifter at January 24, 2015 08:40 PM (zOTsN) 249

Just pulled my P38 from the safe to try to figure out why it's safety makes you cringe. Most DA auto pistols have no safety like my Ruger P91DC. That blocks the firing pin like the P38 when you decock. The reason I like DA pistols is their inherent safety when carried with a live cartridge in the chamber. The P38 allows for an easy pull on the first round if you use the safety. Not really cringe inducing since it is just an optional way to carry it vs modern DAs Posted by: Redshirt at January 24, 2015 09:11 PM (Ae09I) 279

Exactly right, Jinx. Now there's a good snapshot of the collapse of the UK as a significant countr, and the decline of the US (both material and mental).
The Royal Navy is now reduced to a token force - sharing some problems of the shambolic Russian Navy of post-Soviet times, without a budget to pull away from the dock. Believe the RN is having personnel problems as well. The US? Well we all know that story. Have no idea how the Argies' military capability stands today. Apart from the air force, they were far from formidable back in '82, and hard to believe they've upgraded much since then. The willingness of Argentina's permanent "friends" Chile and Brazil to do something to help contain any Argentine shenanigans (i.e. stab them in the back)would actually be more important the US or UK. Amazing. Posted by: rhomboid at January 24, 2015 09:15 PM (afQnV) 281

276, Jinx - The Queen Elizabeth carrier doesn't come on line until what - 2018-2020, something like that? So aside from what they have on the islands (Eurofighters, I think) there is nothing. Though the Argies are in no great shape themselves, given that their ex-British Type 42 destroyers tend to sink at their docks due to lack of maintenance, but still - not good.

If AOSHQ had been around in April 1982, surely one hilarious post would have been about the Canadian moonbat family that had relocated to the Falklands to escape the near-certain global nukyler war that the reckless dunce Ronnie Rayguns was pushing us towards. They thought they had found the remotest refuge from the horrors that NBC News (well, I guess CBC, same difference) and the NYT were flogging as the US (shudder!) took on the russkis.
It was a very funny story. They emerged unscathed, I believe, but the schadenfreude was meter-busting. And just one of the interesting bizarre side stories in a war featuring the sinking of the WWII USS Brooklyn (General Belgrano) with a reconditioned WWII torpedo - by a nuclear sub and the disabling of a submarine by man-portable anti-tank missiles (the Santa Fe, by Royal Marines, in the harbor at Grytvikken, South Georgia Is.). Ridiculous, really. But the sort of ridiculous I like. Picked one up with a bobbed hammer and some handling marks for $650 (mispriced local consignment sale at my indoor range). With a new hammer and a Colt refinish and mechanical tune-up, I'm into it $1,100. Of course all this is completely academic, as I have no intention of selling it (just took it to the range for the first time yesterday). Redshirt, I wasn't clear.
The P-38 drops the hammer when you engage the safety lever. The lever also blocks the firing pin so there is no problem with a accidental discharge when you do that. The PHP does not drop the hammer when you engage the safety lever, it keeps the hammer still cocked but it blocks the firing pin, as far as I can tell. It also has the option of allowing you to drop the hammer by pulling the trigger at this point, which I find disconcerting since you can pull the trigger and the gun only goes click. It is unusual, and unusual can mean popping one in the dirt when you don't expect it. Posted by: Kindltot at January 24, 2015 09:28 PM (t//F+) 294

Holy crap, I'm listening to Walker's speech at the Iowas Summit. He said somebody threatened to gut his wife like a deer; another letter stated that if she didn't stop him from running, he would be the first governor of Wisconsin assassinated; his children were stalked and threatened at the grocery store by protesters; and he received a letter noting where his wife worked, where his kids went to school, and where his father in law lived.
I'm guessing many of these threats were made by Occupy people, but some of them were probably *teachers*. Posted by: All Hail Eris at January 24, 2015 09:52 PM (KH1sk) 320

P-38 is a great pistol. Used up to the 80's by the Bundeswehr, and each one built like a Mercedes. Wolf makes a spring replacement set for them too, I am told it tunes them right up.
Now, I have a deep abiding love for Spanish pistols, but I think it is because many of them have to be taken apart like those Japanese puzzle boxes. Posted by: Kindltot at January 24, 2015 09:56 PM (t//F+) 324
KT, yes, right about O'Higgins. Tough there were a bunch of English and Irish guys running around, especially in the Navy. I think Cochrane's boys were such. Also Guillermo Brown's in Argentina.

I think Chile pushed it a little far when they made the TV series O'Magnum PI, though.

For those who get antenna channel Retro TV, they're running an old sci fi movie "The Beginning of the End". Giant mutant grasshoppers invade Chicago. Why watch it? Because according to the preview they consider dropping a nuclear bomb on Chicago. I feel ambivalent about this. On the one hand, radioactive damage to Lake Michigan. On the other hand, destroy the democratic party machine in Chi town. Gotta say, I'm leaning toward "Screw Lake Michigan", get rid of all those Mayor Daly wannabe's.

The reason my P38 is special is that it internally is a Mercedes but external finish is crude. Machining marks etc. A history of the German desperation at the end of the way in metal. Posted by: Redshirt at January 24, 2015 10:02 PM (Ae09I) 330

All that and more. People cannot fathom how ugly it got here in Wisconsin during the recall. Yet I never once heard Walker let it get to him. He just did his job. Unintimidated, which just happens to be the name of his autobiography. Posted by: grammie winger, watching the fig tree at January 24, 2015 10:03 PM (dFi94) 332
Caesar, I think the serious cretinization of "elite" national security institutions really took off in the Clinton years. Very unqualified Dem Hill staffers poured into senior positions - because after V'Nam and then 12 years of GOP presidents, the Dems had no "bench" to speak of.
And it showed. Now? Speechless at the ridiculous people - people who'd be maxxing out their capabilities as very junior horse-holders to mediocre mid-level officials - who now populate the highest ranks, like Rhodes. My "favorite" juxtaposition? Successor to Paul Wolfowitz (ignoring one interim) as DepSecDef in the Bambi Admin., Bill Lynn, nice guy, fun to drink with, very lightweight Kennedy hack who seriously didn't understand how ridiculous their "no new full deck carriers" nonsense was in the late 80s. A serious defense intellectual to a nobody Hill staffer hack turned lobbyist. But look who they are advising. Obama. Biden. Kerry. Clinton. Hagel. Take all the principals and all their staff, and a serious personwouldn't talk to any of them, much less hire them. But a serious country, esp. in hitherto serious institutions and lines of work, it is no longer .... Posted by: rhomboid at January 24, 2015 10:04 PM (afQnV) 333
Skook, from what I recall, the Chilean navy models itself very consciously on the Royal Navy (not a bad model, obviously), down to the rum ration and even officers using English with each other (?). Anyway, seem to recall that.

This is actually nothing new outside of Wisconsin. I talked with the wife of a guy who stood as a GOP candidate in a heavily Democratic district in Commiefornia. He had effectively no chance of winning, was running on principle, just for the sake of losing like a classic outnumbered hero, so you would figure he would be ignored. No. They got the full measure of untraceable 3AM phone calls saying their names and nothing more, detailed descriptions by mail of their extended family's addresses, and receiving brown paper packages full of road flares with an alarm clock wired up to the flares. The Chilean Navy is 27 people so it's possible.

rhomboid, true. In the Clinton years there were leftists who knew something about defense and were dangerous because of it (Les Aspin, Tony Lake). Now it's mostly kids who are ignorant and didn't want anything to do with defense or security policy because it would somehow have tainted their nonprofit/NGO credentials. Sad.
In a somewhat related note, Vince Foster has popped up as a sock here. While Bernie Nussbaum went through his files and gave the Whitewater stuff to Hillary's chief of staff, who gave them to Hillary's personal attorney, Sylvia Matthews Burwell, the new Secretary of HHS, went through his trash. Long shadows. Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at January 24, 2015 10:10 PM (5f5bM) 337

"I think the serious cretinization of 'elite' national security
institutions really took off in the Clinton years. Very unqualified Dem Hill staffers poured into senior positions" Indeed. However, reflect upon the New Frontier years, where the senior ranks of the Ivy League schools were depleted by the hiring of ostensibly superbly qualified individuals, the "best and the brightest", which was just as extensive a disaster. Astras are golden, and most of the others are ok.
Spain had an odd armaments industry, where the big players in the export market focused on sub-contracting out various parts like slides and springs to jobbing shops, and then individually fitting them together. Spain had a lively export market during both world wars, both France and England bought substitute pistols from the Spanish during WWI - Belgium was occupied and they couldn't get arms from there. During WWII the Germans bought the Astra A-600 in 9mm as a substitute pistol. During and after the Spanish civil war there was an embargo on Spanish pistols in the US and there was a lot of talk about how bad the Spanish pistols were, and to be honest, all the industries had been bombed out, shot up, or seized by the Nationalists, so it is probable that the fitting and heat treating may have suffered. The pistols I would be worried about would be the Spanish copies of the Mauser in .32, but even there the main issue I have heard of are poorly tempered springs. What makes Glenn Thrush an even funnier name is that the scientific name for thrush (the bird) - which is also the classical Latin name for thrush - is turdus. The stem is turd- and the ending is -us, and the plural is turdi. (It is declined like alumnus/alumni, radius/radii, cactus/cacti, and fungus/fungi.
