Second,I know that in fact the craziest period of threats against a president in modern times (that is, advertized plus detected threats) was, unsurprisinly, against Dubya.
Easy to believe. The hysteria against Bush (whose symptoms are not unknown among so-called "conservatives"), the final and complete transformation of pop culture and all media into dumbed-down, crude propaganda bullhorns,yielding such gems as the high-profile "entertainment" fiction (forget if play or movie) about an assassination of that president.
But it would be as unlikely for Bush to have mentioned such a thing, especially in trumpeting his own cause, as it would be for all the non-existent excess heat of "global warming" to be hiding in the deep oceans.
Someone here had the perfect joke the other day. Recall how (an amazingly striking example of how infantilized the Dem party and a major part of thecivic culture had become) some idiot Clinton staff people stole the "W" keys off West Wing computers before leaving? The Bush people, so the joke went, should have stolen the "I" keys. That about sums it up.
Minor style issue, perhaps. But it would be nice if someone as classy and accomplished as Walker, a throwback to an America of intelligent public service, were to maintain a very high standard on such things.

She seems very sweet. Awhile ago she made a small video that showed her coming to work with no make up and in gym clothes. She explained that her father had left her mother when she was a little girl and it devastated her mother. Apparently Julie was getting a lot of fan letters and she felt it was important to show that when she was not at work she was ordinary looking and it took a team to get her " show ready". It took me a long time, but Twitchy helps a lot. Also, following a few really good people -- who are either witty or very expert in particular things -- helps.
I don't use any of the fancy apps. It's not on my phone b/c I don't want the time-sink. But even just using the browser I'm able to get something out of it.
I'm basically down to HQ and Twitter now. And I check Jawa Report, Twitchy, and Legal Insurrection daily... as well as other sites based on links I see on twitter.
I don't understand the folks who spend all their time trying to gain followers. That seems silly.

Um, short story, the land of Yugos and PPY ammo had a unplanned rapid disassembly that involved genocide and ethnic cleansing and NATO bombing.
The Croats wound up with their own concession and decided they wanted to make a 9mm instead of using the older Tokarev or Makarov designs.
Using an amalgamation of P-38, Baretta and just a touch of design style from the Makarov, they came up with that long barrel design. The second model has a snub barrel and looks like a space gun, and the third is a full departure which I think is the polymer frame HS2000.
The PHP started out all machined, and slowly worked to more cast parts and later polymer frames. The PHP uses the locking block of the P-38 but the op-rod and spring recoil of the Baretta, and a take down lever sort of like the Sig, but also looks a lot like the Walther Volkspistole design externally with the two levers (even though the action is completely different)
So, it is basically the French Hotchkiss machine-gun or 1888 Commission rifle of pistols, but I am told it does work quite well.

I know the feeling. We flew on 9/11. Then went to London, landed a few hours before the bombings. There was a 3rd one, but I don't recall that.

Just pulled my P38 from the safe to try to figure out why it's safety makes you cringe. Most DA auto pistols have no safety like my Ruger P91DC. That blocks the firing pin like the P38 when you decock. The reason I like DA pistols is their inherent safety when carried with a live cartridge in the chamber. The P38 allows for an easy pull on the first round if you use the safety. Not really cringe inducing since it is just an optional way to carry it vs modern DAs

Ridiculous, really. But the sort of ridiculous I like. Picked one up with a bobbed hammer and some handling marks for $650 (mispriced local consignment sale at my indoor range). With a new hammer and a Colt refinish and mechanical tune-up, I'm into it $1,100.
Of course all this is completely academic, as I have no intention of selling it (just took it to the range for the first time yesterday). Still, nice, compared to my stock portfolio performance of late.

The P-38 drops the hammer when you engage the safety lever. The lever also blocks the firing pin so there is no problem with a accidental discharge when you do that.
The PHP does not drop the hammer when you engage the safety lever, it keeps the hammer still cocked but it blocks the firing pin, as far as I can tell. It also has the option of allowing you to drop the hammer by pulling the trigger at this point, which I find disconcerting since you can pull the trigger and the gun only goes click.
It is unusual, and unusual can mean popping one in the dirt when you don't expect it.

I get what you are saying sort of in as much as I don't like to decock my P91 with a live round in the chamber. Since when the hammer falls it feels wrong that no boom comes. My P38 does not act like you describe but is a late WWII production so others may be different.

The reason my P38 is special is that it internally is a Mercedes but external finish is crude. Machining marks etc. A history of the German desperation at the end of the way in metal.

My "favorite" juxtaposition? Successor to Paul Wolfowitz (ignoring one interim) as DepSecDef in the Bambi Admin., Bill Lynn, nice guy, fun to drink with, very lightweight Kennedy hack who seriously didn't understand how ridiculous their "no new full deck carriers" nonsense was in the late 80s. A serious defense intellectual to a nobody Hill staffer hack turned lobbyist.
But look who they are advising. Obama. Biden. Kerry. Clinton. Hagel. Take all the principals and all their staff, and a serious personwouldn't talk to any of them, much less hire them. But a serious country, esp. in hitherto serious institutions and lines of work, it is no longer ....

This is actually nothing new outside of Wisconsin.
I talked with the wife of a guy who stood as a GOP candidate in a heavily Democratic district in Commiefornia. He had effectively no chance of winning, was running on principle, just for the sake of losing like a classic outnumbered hero, so you would figure he would be ignored.
No.
They got the full measure of untraceable 3AM phone calls saying their names and nothing more, detailed descriptions by mail of their extended family's addresses, and receiving brown paper packages full of road flares with an alarm clock wired up to the flares.

Spain had an odd armaments industry, where the big players in the export market focused on sub-contracting out various parts like slides and springs to jobbing shops, and then individually fitting them together. Spain had a lively export market during both world wars, both France and England bought substitute pistols from the Spanish during WWI - Belgium was occupied and they couldn't get arms from there. During WWII the Germans bought the Astra A-600 in 9mm as a substitute pistol.
During and after the Spanish civil war there was an embargo on Spanish pistols in the US and there was a lot of talk about how bad the Spanish pistols were, and to be honest, all the industries had been bombed out, shot up, or seized by the Nationalists, so it is probable that the fitting and heat treating may have suffered.
The pistols I would be worried about would be the Spanish copies of the Mauser in .32, but even there the main issue I have heard of are poorly tempered springs.
