Real Life Climatologist Roy Spencer On 2014 As The Hottest Year Ever: Nope! [CBD]

mountains_snow2000.jpg

The guy has an actual PhD, in a discipline that might have some special insight into climate change. Yes, argument from authority is not popular around here, but in this case he really is a rocket scientist! And he really doesn't like the shabby analysis that passes for climatology nowadays.

Science as a methodology for getting closer to the truth has been all but abandoned. It is now just one more tool to achieve political ends.

This needs to be shouted from the rooftops, plastered across t-shirts, hammered into the skulls of every progressive who proclaims his dedication to rational thought but in reality worships at the altar of Moloch; willing to destroy anything for his own ends.

Oh....and he doesn't like journalists very much (I have a sneaking suspicion that he is a Moron)

Reports that 2014 was the "hottest" year on record feed the insatiable appetite the public has for definitive, alarming headlines. It doesn't matter that even in the thermometer record, 2014 wasn't the warmest within the margin of error. Who wants to bother with "margin of error"? Journalists went into journalism so they wouldn't have to deal with such technical mumbo-jumbo. I said this six weeks ago, as did others, but no one cares unless a mainstream news source stumbles upon it and is objective enough to report it.

This is an interesting, if slightly non-scientific point......

In what universe does a temperature change that is too small for anyone to feel over a 50 year period become globally significant? Where we don't know if the global average temperature is 58 or 59 or 60 deg. F, but we are sure that if it increases by 1 or 2 deg. F, that would be a catastrophe?

He is on quite a roll......

Where our only truly global temperature measurements, the satellites, are ignored because they don't show a record warm year in 2014?

In what universe do the climate models built to guide energy policy are not even adjusted to reflect reality, when they over-forecast past warming by a factor of 2 or 3?

And where people have to lie about severe weather getting worse (it hasn't)? Or where we have totally forgotten that more CO2 is actually good for life on Earth, leading to increased agricultural productivity, and global greening?

Go read it. I can't excerpt it all, but it's short, has some good links, and even has pictures!

It's by Matt Ridley, who calls himself a "lukewarmist". He believes that global warming is real and man-made, but doesn't believe it will be a big problem or require drastic solutions. In return, he's gotten the exact same treatment from the fanatics that the outright skeptics get. Read it.

Not sure what's going on with them editorially.

They ran an extremely long string of "the science is settled" Thermageddon articles.

Then they ran -- if memory serves, a bit over a year ago -- an honestly skeptical extended article in which they said, hey, wait a second, these models are junk, they're not reflecting physical reality, there hasn't been any discernible warming in a decade and a half.

Now it seems they're back to Thermageddon.

Anyway, I used to subscribe to the rag, because US newsmagazines had always been far worse, and I don't like having to wade through sports, entertainment and celebrity fluff to find out what's going on in the larger world.

79 So in addition to the Roy Spencer piece, those who missed it should also read the Holman Jenkins WSJ piece linked in the main page sidebar.

It takes the journalistas to task, especially Seth Borenstein of the AP.

Don't underestimate having a guy like Borenstein, with a repeatedly demonstrated bias towards a particular conclusion, doing "science writing" at AP.

Because as the nation's print newsrooms steadily shrink in headcount, the *last* thing editors want to do is to expensively pay a science writer of their own. They find it far easier to just rip AP copy straight off the wire and run that.

So the role and voice of wire service journalistas like Borenstein is magnified, as is what they have to say, even when it's ridiculous crap.

80 Another real threat is the possibility of another GEOS X-class solar flare hitting Earth like the Carrington Event in 1859. That flare made telegraph machines catch fire. Can you imagine what that would do today? Do you think our society could survive a power outage over an entire hemisphere that could last for months?

Maybe we should prepare for something like that? Maybe try to harden electronics in key places in our infrastructure?

But no, we have to reduce are carbon footprint footprint or we're all gonna diiiieee!

Read Dr. Spencer's "How the Climate System Works (for Dummies)"; same website. In the comments there is a discussion of how atmospheric nitrogen, oxygen, and argon are the heat trappers; and that the GHGs of water vapor and carbon dioxide are the "holes" in the blanket that allow infrared radiation to escape. Oh, and that because of this, there is no way that earth could have planetary "run-away global warming."

Kinda turns the whole GHG religion on its head.

105 They're also falsifying surface temperature data through omission e.g. Canada's federal weather agency has IIRC about 100 Canadian Arctic weather stations with thermometers; NOAA/NASA uses the data from just one[/] of these weather stations (BTW it's almost right on the 60th parallel so it's as far south as you can go and still say you're in the Arctic) and extrapolates all of the Canadian Arctic's temperature from the one site instead of using the real data.

They do something similar with landlocked, mountainous Bolivia (so it's colder and dryer than the South American countries with seashores) where they could use the real data but instead "extrapolate" it from surrounding countries.

And I'm assuming a commenter or more has commented above about how poorly maintained U.S. weather stations are; and how that's not going to be any better in Third World countries.

I suspect that this some variety of Kaffakatrap, though I don't know which.

108 Of course don't believe in AGW. But what probably bothers me most is the "consensus that global warming is a bad thing. Does that mean, therefore, that global cooling is good? We don't need science to answer that question. History has already done an adequate job. And if the earth were cooling, would we try to change that? It would be the height of arrogance to say that we can, just as it is folly to think we could reverse global warming.

131 One major cause of the mistrust in science today is the lack of transparency and accountability - the inability to review and verify scientific claims independently outside of so-called 'peer review'.

Back in late 1980s when I was an RA at the University of Illinois, all of the big federal granting agencies (National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, etc) required that any computer source code created or funded using federal research money must be made available to any US citizen on request. I spent plenty of time at the copy machine killing trees and spinning tapes for these requests. I tracked my time for billing purposes.

Some time after I left (not sure when) the federal research agencies quietly changed the rules. The requirement for public disclosure was dropped. Today AGW the researchers like Michael Mann at Penn State are not releasing their source code or raw data.

Michael Mann and the other AGW proponents are fighting it tooth and nail in the federal court system to hide their raw data from Mark Steyn and Watts Up. What have the AGW researchers to hide, if they are as above-board as they claim to be?

Well, whenever someone does manage to dig under the covers, they regularly find cherry-picking of data, adjustments that always go in one direction, and massive selection bias. It's everywhere in the data.

We need to go back to the old rules from the 1980s: if you get federal money to publish your research, then the raw data and source code must be made public under an Open Source license.

If not, why not?

On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword....wait there's even more Now what if i told you there was a simple Wordpress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That's right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin
