I don't believe this. I mean, yes, you can fire fast with a five or ten pound pull on your bow, but not with any accuracy and certainly not with any impact. It's going to just bounce off any degree of armor, even heavy cloth, much less leather or metal.
The little wooden fifty-pound bow I use in my classes regularly bounces off of watermelons. That shooting technique would have merely annoyed a medieval foot-soldier. Posted by: Keith Eppich at January 23, 2015 06:05 PM (V72vb) Posted by: davidt at January 23, 2015 06:05 PM (fBxC6) 67

How fast will an arrow fly @220 lbs of pull?
Not the only variable, so it's hard to say. You also have to know: 1. Arrow weight 2. Draw length 3. IBO bow speed (used as a sort of standardization measure for bow comparison) Rough estimate: 1. 350 grain arrow 2. 30 inches draw length 3. 345 IBO Results in 595 FPS Posted by: bonhomme at January 23, 2015 06:27 PM (jhqr1) 128

@197 ThunderB, here is a video of a Chinese repeating crossbow. Not at all like de Vinci.
http://youtu.be/ZDeAxTxzorE ------------------- Seen them before. It's a neat design. Warhammer's Dark Elves use a design that's similar, with the cartridge box mounted on top of the crossbow. But their design uses the standard trigger instead of the "pump the cartridge" mechanism that the historical bows used. I'm not sure how well the fantasy version would work in real life. The best domestic wood for making bows is Beaudarc, also called Osage Orange. The name Beau D'arc is French for "good for bows." They learned it (the technology, not the French name) from the Indians. A lot of people also simply know it as "Bodock", and was used a lot for fence posts because of it's hardness and rot resistance. A lot of time the green wood would root and sprout, and that's why it's usually found along treelines and fencerows. The wood is a strange yellow color, and will make sparks fly from your chainsaw. Also, watch out for the wicked thorns.

@313 - Pinto a horrible design but based on proven mechanicals. Vega much better design but design shortcuts (hint: you do not use an iron head on an aluminum engine, and then cheap out on the head gasket) and a lot of manufacturing problems.

"Bucket seats are sooo overrated."
-Posted by: bergerbilder at January 23, 2015 08:04 PM (8MjqI) The Scamp had a bench seat. That cost me another fifteen-hundred bucks. I took a hard-left around a traffic-circle in a sleepy little development and slid across that bitch. I wound-up going up on a lawn, (beer may have been involved), and running over a Japanese Maple. This particular Japanese Maple belonged to a Municipal Court Judge. As I stopped the car, my buddies yelled, "Go!, Go!, Go!" There was a dude in the driveway of that house who just happened to be the judge's Son. I stopped because I was concerned about the car and if I ran over someone's tree... ...well. I owed the dude a tree. Turned-out that it was $1,250.00 for a Japanese Maple. ...and his Municipal Court Judge Father wanted me to donate another $250.00 to Our Lady of Something-Or-Other to keep this "Off the Record". Yup. That Scamp had stories to tell. Turns out? ...so do I. Posted by: ColdBeer1 (Slap) (T) at January 23, 2015 08:17 PM (16bOT) 323

Put me in mind of knife making, T.O.Y.S., and atlatls. Knife making requires fire in most cases, not all. If you need to keep your IR signature low, then... T.O.Y.S = Tools Of Your Surroundings: remember Reginald Denny and the LA6. "Atlatl" is one of the dozen or so words in English from the Nahua language. You prolly use one or more of them every single day of your life. A guy in MT has figured out, again, there's more to them than meets the eye. In fact, they prolly were the technology that enabled the extinction of at least two Genera of NoAm megafauna. The Ford Maverick wasn't a bad little car either. It seems to have morphed out of the really weak Mustang they started pushing in the late 70's. I'm glad that Ford revamped the Mustang line. GM thought the aluminum block in the vega was hard enough that it didn't need iron sleeves. except that aluminum actually oxidizes faster than iron. Aluminum oxide makes a great abrasive. The blocks were fine, but a set of rings would only last about 10K.

Question for the horde: the movie employs the there are 3 kinds of people: sheep/wolf/sheepdog metaphor. The first person I ever knew who used it was Bill Whittle, in a typically brilliant essay he wrote around 2003 or 2004. I came across other writer who used it, but I always thought it originated with Whittle. Does anybody know if it predates Whittle? I was thinking it is extremely cool if Bill Whittle's essay was read and the metaphor was picked up by either Kyle or the screenwriter and put into the book and movie, where Kyle's dad uses it. They are always claiming they have been sexually threatened online. Cements their victim status and gives the moral authority in their world. Now I don't doubt it happens. I'm sure it does and it's disgusting and scary. But then we have these SJW in meat space who put nooses on their own desks, write themselves terrifying notes and threats, claim they were raped falsely to score political points. I remember the female professor who used Uber, claimed she was raped, and when the Uber driver said no way, her excuse was that she was "raising awareness". Oh lord, Ghoulardi...
Gonna violate some HIPAA rules, but what the fcuk... Back in the day, my dad treated Ernie for some throat issues. We (my brothers and I) were big fans of the show and had my dad get the obligatory signed pics from Ernie: "Hey you little finks, cool it with the boom booms Ghoulardi"... Dad had warned Ernie to cool it with the cigars. So we're watching the show on the next Friday night when we notice Erinie's smoking a cigar...again. I yell for my dad to come and see for himself. Dad calls the station and asks to have a message delivered to Ernie - Cool It With The CIGARS. The folks at WJW did as asked and, on air, Ernie reads the note. Slight double take, and the cigar falls out of his mouth and he says "Sorry Doc!" Pretty funny to see and Ernie told my dad he thought it was cool that he would call in to remind him to "cool it". "Perhaps we need a Longbows vs. Crossbows MoMee. Posted by: All Hail Eris" That's exactly how the first argument stared Eris, and it had nothing to do with agincourt, it had to do with my amateur history and personal experience, and the other persons historical expertise and amateur understanding of military experience, I sided with the Longbow, for various reasons, and he did too actually, he just wanted to hear my opinion, and then it moved to other variations of military advancement and practice, on a thread that had nothing to do with weaponry at all, which lead to the very unusually developed legend. As for the second bow, it's a recurve, which is of persian origain, and the Mongols didn't kick mideval armies asses, they kicked constantinian armies asses, and since holy roman armies were either infantry, or horseman so weighted down treating horses as infantry, the light attack skirmisher tacktics won. The midevil armies moved away from cataphract like mounted troups to light armored skirmishers, and the greatest advances that destroyed the nomads was the lance, the stirrup and light leather barding. My dad was invited to a Browns game back in '63, my brothers went with him...I didn't, as I was too young. After the game they were invited to go to the Touchdown Club to meet the players and what not. My dad, who was not at all into sports, was being escorted through the room by a patient/client of his and introducing him to various folks. Somehow the two of them got separated. So on his own, with my brothers in tow, he worked the room. All was well until he went up to one of the players and introduced himself. My brothers knew immediately who it was and tried to save my dad from what was about to transpire. "Hi, I'm so and so, a guest of who de who. Who are you and what do you do? "Well doc, I'm Jim Brown and I play for the Browns..." My brothers were mortified, my dad's host thought it hilarious, and to this day it is a story that get's told when ever we remember the old man. Soo,
Apache vs. Dragon taught me that women just can't drive LOL! Laser guided missiles, stupid grrl! Why would you LEAD w/ that?! Not convinced the fcking bullits wouldn't have done some damage to that aerodynamically implausible CGI creation no matter how "tough" the hide. But, OK lead with the Hellfire Missiles always because...duh HELL fire MISSILES!, I guess... Posted by: Deety at January 24, 2015 05:22 AM (gSkMY) 499
Most promising. With a massive P.R. campaign, youth training groups, proper adjustment of public school curricula, strategic corporate backing, appropriate tax breaks and a 24/7 dedicated cable channel, we should just about be ready to re-fight the Mogul Hordes in, oh, 2 centuries or so.

No Il, it was the old moniker, it was me and Ed Snate, and then others joined in, but me and Ed were the primaries. Both monikers are defunct, and as an aside, or rather in line with the tone of the thread.
How this became an Ohio thread is EXACTLY how that protest against racism thread Ace posted back then became a LongbowVsCrossbow thread. It just happens, and it's what makes this place have the best commenters on the planet. Posted by: Douglas at January 24, 2015 03:48 PM (SfYd6) 501
