It has told the New York Times that it is essentially abandoning its proclaimed goal of removing Assad. For the Saudis and the other Gulf Arabs, this is a nightmare. They're engaged in a titanic regional struggle with Iran. And they are losing - losing Yemen, losing Lebanon, losing Syria, and watching post-U.S.-withdrawal Iraq come under increasing Iranian domination. It ought to be an interesting spring this year. While we're on the topic of health, now there is concern that e-cig users may be vaping formaldehyde if they use high voltage settings on variable voltage batteries.According to their research, the presence of these chemicals was low or undetected under low-voltage (3.3V) conditions. But when cranked up to high-voltage (5.0V), the tested vapor contained a level of formaldehyde-releasing agents much higher than the formaldehyde you'd get from a cigarette; between 5 to 15 times the amount. It basically consisted of saying women should be able to work outside the home or get paid the same as men do for the same job. They weren't pains to be around. These modern women are either soulless or mentally ill or controlled by the Father of Lies or some combination of the three.

He tries to open door while spending on his hind legs but he can't quite manage to twist the knobs. He also figured out if he sits up and begs he'll get fed faster. The older cat who was a stray will beg too but mostly she just looks at me as if to say "You expect me to play games to get my breakfast?"

So is this a good idea? Firm blends an AR-15 and AK-47 to create Mk-47 'Mutant'. A bit pricey at $1500.
I think it's an interesting idea. I think the AR15 is a better platform, but the AK47 has a better round. And it looks a lot like the rifle Packy carries in Cat Shit One. Posted by: Insomniac at January 23, 2015 10:31 PM (mx5oN) 100

Hey horde,
just watched Grand Budapest Hotel, wife had recorded it when we had free HBO. Good flick if you're a movie buff into odd, campy movies. Funny to us but not for everyone. The movie is based on the works of Stefan Zweig. He was an Austrian novelist, playwright, journalist and biographer. At the height of his literary career, in the 1920s and 1930s, he was one of the most popular writers in the world. Posted by: Farmer at January 23, 2015 10:40 PM (o/90i) 125

I don't know about younger women but I think most women appreciate a nice , sincere compliment "You look nice; You've very pretty, etc Unless you're married or dating someone or trying for a laugh with someone you know well it's probably not the best line to say "You've got a great ass" or "I like your breasts." to someone you've just met. ;^) I really don't know that most men would appreciate "You look like your penis could stand up to some heavy usage" from some woman they've just met either but I'm admittedly old fashioned.

NCJ..... that's a nice looking rig, and the mag is interesting. Heavy curve to take in the large taper of the AK round, but a straight section to fit the AR lower.
How's the function on that? Does that straight section sometimes mis-feed rounds, or ? Looks like it'd save tons of cash over a dedicated AR/AK hybrid lower. Oh, and does the bolt hold-open work on that setup? I know that it's inop on the hybrid rigs, as AK mags have no cutout in the mag body, nor "step" on the follower to press up on the bolt hold-open toggle. RE: The Enterprise
1) Neo BSG had a better idea with the CnC located deep inside the ship. 2) The best designed Federation ship was the Defiant. Fast, maneuverable, and packing a hell of a punch. 3) Why are starships always designed with the crew standing perpendicular to the direction of motion (like they were standing on a sea-going ship)? It would make far more sense to design a starship, especially a warship, like a skyscraper, where your engines are at the "bottom" of the ship and you travel "upwards" That way your acceleration would provide artificial gravity. Much more energy efficient. 4) For that matter, the most efficient design for a starship would be either a sphere or a cylinder. The disk shape isn't bad, since it allows people a since of size so that they don't feel like being shoved in a sardine can. But it still is the wrong orientation (see #3). Won't hurt to have a few cans of AK food on hand, and I far prefer the AR platform. There's really just nothing in the AK's (lack of) ergonomics, that melds with my build, stance or style. Yeah, I can shoot it well enough, but I don't like shooting it all that much. And if I do get that built, I'll also get the CZ boltie in that chambering. I'm finding that it's really good to have a bolt-gun as an alternate platform to every black-rifle in the safe. And in some chamberings, it's the semi-auto that's the backup to the bolt. Yeah, pantyhose are a b. I'm tall and that usually means that either the crouch ends up at mid thigh (Leggs pantyhose was always like that) or, if the top of the pantyhose fit well, they're baggy at the ankles. The best fitting pairs I ever found were the cheap, supermarket brand pantyhose at Giant Supermarkets in the DC area. They lasted longer than the expensive department store brands too, which were usually too sheer and got runners 5 minutes after you first put them on. But I don't live there any more so I can't buy them. In the '80's I was big on wearing long skirts with boots which at least hid the runs in the hose. Posted by: Donna &&&&&& V. Posted by: cthulhu at January 24, 2015 12:15 AM (T1005) I have thought about this long and hard and I honestly think the best support for those of us overly blessed would be a simple sling type, circular shaped thing that went up around the neck. Like a halter top but nothing around the back. But that'd be impossible to wear under anything. Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at January 24, 2015 12:22 AM (Pauop) It is a finite engineering problem, and -- thus -- susceptible to an engineered solution.....but we're not talking rigid metallic assemblies with fixed locations and dimensions. Furthermore, each "installation" would be unique [particularly in ways guys don't normally think about -- e.g. "what is the height of the underboob in relation to the shoulder blade....when reaching overhead, at rest, or reclining?]. Further, when designing the resultant support device, there are a wide variety of materials available that have their own strengths, stretchinesses, and limitations. The Yemen debacle, along with everything else King Fecal Touch has turned to shit, leads me to wonder......
It will be quite interesting to see if the USA may still have the capability to ramp-up to wartime production of ships, armor, aircraft and related material, in a timely enough manner to make a difference. We're surely going to need it. Sadly, the really big steel forges were sold to Japan in the late '70s, early '80s. I'm talking about the ones that made the sixteen-inch barrels for the Iowa Class battleships. And I don't think their equal now exists here, at all. Not that we'd be making new battleships, or the barrels for 'em. But, it's the idea of having that capability. I know we've sold off far, far too much of it. How much we have left to work with, is the question. Tangentially.... I'd love to begin to source public school textbooks from the 50's, 60's and very early '70s, from before the progressives goose-stepped through the institutions. I wonder if any quantities of those still exist. Moreover, I'd like to see the best of those books to be re-edited (by us Morons!) to be current, but still in keeping with those values and emphasis on straight-up learning KNOWLEDGE, and not social-engineering. I think the free market, (home schooling, private schools), would buy every copy printed, and the demand would be for more. And if enough Morons get onto local, County or State school boards, well, they can get bought at that level, too. So, yes. My sincere prayers for our troops in Yemen, and those who will have to clean up 0zero's messes. But, I just got into that "wondering" mode, and so, here it is. Vendette, they're an interesting operation. Beefmaster cattle raised on grass, but they finish them by adding grain to the fields before slaughter. They never leave the ranch until it's time to process them.
I'm curious how that's going to taste. I like grassfed beef better than most commercial grainfed, but there's no denying that really top quality grain finished beef does have a certain quality that pure grass doesn't quite match. Should be interesting. I'm excited to try it. Posted by: Lauren at January 24, 2015 01:03 AM (MYCIw) 628

Just watched a strange old film called "Things to Come." It was conceived, written and partly directly by H.G. Wells himself, in 1936. In it, he predicts the next 100 years of history.
Basically, the film is divided into thirds. The first third was amazing in that it correctly predicted an astounding number of things: Not just the outbreak of WWII, but almost the exact moment of the outbreak of WWII -- he was only a few months off (happened in 1940 in the film). He predicted The Blitz (aerial bombardment of London) and the populace hiding out in the Underground Stations. He predicted blitzkrieg warfare with tanks. He even got the battle of Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain (aerial dogfight with invading fighter planes over southern England) exactly right, in the right order, right at the beginning of WWII. And so much more. But then the film goes downhill at a dizzying pace. The second third of the film takes place in 1970, which is shown as being like the Middle Ages: After WWII has gone on continuously from 1940 to 1970, Europe has been completely ravaged, civilization has fallen apart, and people revert to a pre-industrial lifestyle. Obviously Wells got that about as wrong as he could. But it is the last third which goes completely off the rails. Set in 2036, it shows the future as Wells hoped it would become. Unfortunately, at this stage of his life, Wells was a socialist, and basically in favor of totalitarianism. So the future shows a sort of communist/fascist "utopia" of underground cities and self-appointed technocrats who make the "best" decisions for the people. Democracy is a thing of the past. Everyone is equal, except for the technocrats, needless to say. Anyway, the point to all this: quite near the end of the film, a new character is introduced: The daughter of the Chief technocrat. (She is going to be launched toward the moon by a giant space gun.) As soon as she appeared on the screen, it was like, "Day-umm, who is that actress?" The quality of the film stock wasn't that good back then, and the film has almost no close-ups, but from her brief seconds on screen she seemed like the most gorgeous creature ever. Well, we waited for the credits and it turned out to be someone named "Pearl Argyle," a very minor actress who only ever made a couple of films in the '30s and the retired from acting. But thanks to the Internet, we now have Pearl Argyle Compliance Pics, to show why, in the words of some film producer back then, she was once dubbed "The most beautiful woman of her generation," which is saying something, considering the competition. Not many pictures of her exist, but she certainly is in the running: http://www.listal.com/viewimage/5376144 http://tinyurl.com/pa5numj http://tinyurl.com/mffnsbk http://tinyurl.com/qjfs8oe http://www.625.org.uk/ttc/images/s0881.jpg (Those last two are from "Things to Come.") The Yemen debacle, along with everything else King Fecal Touch has turned to shit, leads me to wonder...... Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at January 24, 2015 12:57 AM (RzZOc) I don't think those times will come again. Laying a big asset down on top of a problem is risky, 'cause someone with the right little asset might ruin your day. Expensive tanks and professional crews can be spiked by the right weapon in the right hands. Instead, I'd expect to see swarms of smaller, lighter, cheaper assets. One could create a matter/anti-matter warp drive simply by putting a single picture of Lena Dunham and single picture of Pearl Argyle together in a vacuum-sealed box, and connecting electrodes to the outside. The perfectly balanced ugliness and beauty would mutually annihilate each other, tearing holes in time and space.

What is vastly different from the days gone by is ammunition expenditure. Small arms ammo we will be fine on. There are several companies that can make military grade small arms ammo.
Tank ammo, artillery ammo, missiles , bombs, guidance systems? No way on Gods Good Green Earth that those that produce them will be to keep up with expenditure. Posted by: GMB - Tyrant 2nd Class at January 24, 2015 01:27 AM (91eZY) 694

SMFH. I'm sorry for you, ma'am. I won't type of my USAF experiences here, other than to say that even during the Carter years, that I realized that the USMC was the last bastion of Martial Sprit in the Armed Services.
That's not to disparage the fine personnel in the other services who still serve and fight with fervor. But it is to disparage the O-6+ brass, who've long forgotten the troops they lead, unless it's to assign them to paint the rocks along the parade ground, so it looks spiffy for the O-9's visit from H.Q. I served under only one General Officer, who wanted the base's cops to be effective, bust the bad guys and clean out the riff raff. All the others didn't want that to happen, 'cause the "stats" called their "leadership" into question, as in being called a high-crime base, etc. Careerists and rank-climbers eat the soul out of any branch of the military. Combine those with progressive social engineering, and the cancer runs deep, and grows quickly. Aggressive soldiers aren't a peacetime bases' finest citizens. Aggressive Generals aren't a politician's pet puppets. Short of a coup, we've got to figure out some solutions, eh? /Canadian. What is so fucking disappointing and sad is that once upon a time, General Odierno was our CG in Tikrit in 2003, and he actually did give a shit about us. "Anyway he told a story how some SEALS showed up in his hide and were
just banging away at insurgents, then he figured out they were shooting .300WinMags compared to his .308" ******************** Back in the mid-80's we proved that the .300 Win Mag was a far superior round out to 1000 yards, and commercially available. It was not in the Army inventory, however, so to buy a different caliber would require going through several YEARS of ammo proof of concept, testing, etc. So we recommended procurement of what became the M24 Sniper Weapon System in 7.62 NATO using National Match, which was acceptable out to 600 yards, with the intention to do a product improvement later to retrofit it with .300 Win Mag. Of course, Special Ops had no such restrictions and could go ahead and procure the .300 Win Mags from MacMillan. Posted by: Joni E at January 24, 2015 01:49 AM (5f5bM) 733

heheh Posted by: SMFH at it all at January 24, 2015 03:17 AM (OsWis) It's a bad idea to encourage me when I get rolling on Gilbert and Sullivan operettas..... http://tinyurl.com/pckv77x There lived a King, as I've been told, In the wonder-working days of old, When hearts were twice as good as gold, And twenty times as mellow. Good-temper triumphed in his face, And in his heart he found a place For all the erring human race And every wretched fellow. When he had Rhenish wine to drink It made him, very sad to think That some, at junket or at jink, Must be content with toddy. He wished all men as rich as he (And he was rich as rich could be), So to the top of every tree Promoted everybody. Lord Chancellors were cheap as sprats, And Bishops in their shovel hats Were plentiful as tabby cats -- In point of fact, too many. Ambassadors cropped up like hay, Prime Ministers and such as they Grew like asparagus in May, And Dukes were three a penny. On every side Field-Marshals gleamed, Small beer were Lords-Lieutenant deemed, With Admirals the ocean teemed All round his wide dominions. And Party Leaders you might meet In twos and threes in every street Maintaining, with no little heat, Their various opinions. That King, although no one denies His heart was of abnormal size, Yet he'd have acted otherwise If he had been acuter. The end is easily foretold, When every blessed thing you hold Is made of silver, or of gold, You long for simple pewter. When you have nothing else to wear But cloth of gold and satins rare, For cloth of gold you cease to care -- Up goes the price of shoddy. In short, whoever you may be, To this conclusion you'll agree, When every one is somebodee, Then no one's anybody! Posted by: cthulhu at January 24, 2015 03:46 AM (T1005) 775

774, I actually like that...go figure. Posted by: SMFH at it all at January 24, 2015 03:51 AM (OsWis) If I didn't think it was enjoyable, I wouldn't go around inflicting it on people I generally like. Gilbert + Sullivan operas -- produced 1871-1896. Sullivan, who also composed "Onward Christian Soldiers", always thought of the operatic collaborations as "slumming it". Gilbert did all the words, set the stage, and moved everyone around.....and was a freakin' nut. Even today, they are funny, timely, and relevant. Hell, they're better than 99 and 44/100 of television. But they're fading from consciousness, buried under dreck. Been busy, Cooth. Actually had an idea for a blog post, took notes and everything, but don't have any time.
SoC has mastered the army crawl at this point. Just needs to figure out how to get his legs under him and it'll be off to the races. On a more serious note, one of our Great Dane mixes showed some aggression towards my nephew--no injuries, but bared teeth at him through the patio door for knocking on the glass, and it was no fluke, did it 2 or 3 times. Monday, he's gone, going to the dog trainer who loves him and does not have any children. He was a rehome from a rescue that didn't really work with him, unlike his litter mate who we have had since 5 weeks and worked from the beginning. 778, I remember that now! I love that part in the movie. Posted by: SMFH at it all at January 24, 2015 04:22 AM (OsWis) The joke in the original opera is that British tars were little better than slaves at the time -- captains could (and did) exercise brutal and sadistic "discipline" at their whim, and there was essentially no legal recourse (think "Mutiny on the Bounty"). But in the opera, the captains ran around saying, "....if you please...." with every request; and the sailors sang songs about freedom. Posted by: cthulhu at January 24, 2015 04:33 AM (T1005) 789

I love dogs to pieces and I'm personally prepared to deal with all sorts of situations.....but I'd rather see one put down before I'd allow things to go crossways with a child. A dog trainer that knows him already is about as good a solution as you can hope for. On the SoC side.......time to run around like an idiot and child-proof the plugs and move all the cleaners out from under the sinks -- not that you can make everything perfect. He's about to gain an order of magnitude in how far he can go in a blink. Posted by: cthulhu at January 24, 2015 04:43 AM (T1005) 790

Posted by: cthulhu at January 24, 2015 04:33 AM (T1005)" You might want to read "The Wooden World" by N.A.M.Rogers who did a remarkably detailed book about the British navy in the 1750s. Here's a link to the Amazon page. http://tinyurl.com/lrfsb8o He goes into some detail about discipline in the navy, comparing it to the rest of British society at that time. Records show that about 80% of the floggings were done to 20% of the sailors. Also if the crew felt that punishment was excessive they had some recourse. They could formally complain to the higher ups in the navy. They could desert. They could mutiny. The author cites a number of trials where mutiny was found to be justified because the officers were incompetent and the mutineers were freed without punishment. Ambitious officers could take crew with them when they were promoted and that could make a difference in how well a ship performed if there were already a core of men who were used to working together. If an officer could not persuade anyone to follow him to his next assignment, that was considered a liability. Posted by: Obnoxious A-Hole at January 24, 2015 05:23 AM (KDbAT) 810
BTW, cthulhu
The grey one was #1. He chewed the tail off, the the legs, then the ears. I think in that order. Then he chewed the head open- just enough to eat the brains out. I sewed it back up, but within a couple days, it was officially dead. The "special" one was the littl brown one in the ziplock bag. Posted by: shredded chi at January 24, 2015 05:30 AM (OmdjQ) 811

It is a gas tube AR type action that shoots 7.62X39 ammunition and uses AK magazines. In theory it should allow you to realize the accuracy potential of the cartridge. Personally, I would have to have a lot more money and have already bought a lot of other more interesting guns before something like that would hold much interest.
